cat has peed on my bed 3 days in a row now and its starting to get ridiculous

She is about 6 years old, a petite cat and normally she doesn't misbehave but lately she's been peeing outside the litter box; my bed. my bed isn't really normally that dirty but today what got me here asking for advice and voicing my concern was when she was on my desk, getting attention from me and i gave her a treat, but right after she started peeing on my blankets, just staring at me. I have the door wide open so normally i would think she would go to the litter box? the litter box is pretty clean and easy to maintain as she is my only cat. Is it like a scent thing that needs to get covered so she'll stop peeing on my bed?

Kitten driving me crazy

I got a kitten a couple weeks ago and I'm not sure if I made the right decision. I have another cat and at first was keeping the kitten in my bedroom untill I felt comfortable leaving the kitten and cat alone in the same room. However, I'm not sure if I'm allergic to the kitten or coincidentally developed some kind of sinus infection the day after I brought the kitten home, but I've been feeling under the weather health-wise ever since.

My kitten is also way more more energetic than my other cat was as a kitten (and another cat I had as a child). It's difficult relaxing or sleeping in my bedroom because he's bouncing around or tries to sit on my laptop while I'm using it.

I don't really know what to do because I don't want to confine the kitten to one room, alone, at night for hours while I try and sleep. During the day it's also becoming a bit stressful keeping both cats separated. I feel bad to keep my cat in one room while I let the kitten roam around the apartment and vice versa.

So long story short, my allergies/sinus problems, keeping the kitten mostly in my bedroom when he's so energetic and also keeping the cats separated indefinitely is stressing me out, especially because I don't know what exactly is causing my sinus issues and how long it will take until I can leave my cat and kitten alone together.

Advice?

Cat sick for a month

Our cat got the common flu after a long battle with urinary tract, it lasted 1 month until he got healed. Aafterwhich, another 26 days having the common flu. He does not eat nor drink. We have been taking him to the vet every 4 days. three days to take antibiotics then 1 day later he goes back to not eating then we take him again. We have been at it for the past month. The vet is saying his antibodies aren't fighting. I'm not sure not sure what to do. Did you guys face similar cases?

Cat just Shit Next to Me on Couch

Title says it, I just got home and me and my orange tabby are chilling on the couch. He walks away to use his litter box. When he comes back, he jumps up next to me and literally shits a tiny bit and, I got very angry and cleaned the stain.

I just moved with him and he went from being an indoor/outdoor cat to being an Indoor cat in a basement apartment. I’m so proud of how far he has come. He used to scratch my door all night and now he is all calm and loving his area.

Why would he do this? Could he be sick 🥺

dry cracked paws, any new ideas?

So I have a rescue black lab puppy. she will be a year in feb, when we got her she had really callus paws which I got rid of with using a human foot grater/file to finally get rid of them. Yes she has gone to the vets EVERYTHING I've done has been talked to by a vet but can't get a head of this. We got rid of the calluses but the cracks are still there. I have done allll sorts of paw lotions/treatments/palms, I have used coconut oil, olive oil. She wears booties when I apply stuff so she gets the most out of the treatment. I was just wondering if there was any weird things that has worked for anyone that you didn't really think would? im out of ideas and willing to hear anyone's ideas. Thank you 😀

I Hate The Cat Adoption Process

I’ve been trying for awhile to adopt a cat, the first one, I’ll call D was a very sweet boy who was being housed by the pet store I work at, I had my eyes on him since he was brought there and I absolutely fell in love with him. I’d see him every shift and I became really attached, so I contacted the shelter he was associated with after I spoke to my managers about my intent to adopt and never heard anything back for a few days. I called the shelter to ask some health/diet questions about him and asked if I could set up an appointment to formally meet that cat. I was redirected to email another person and when I did, I didn’t receive a response. Then D’s profile was taken down off the shelter website and his sheet said that he’d been adopted. I only got a response two days later that he had been adopted and I was frustrated that after all the work I put in over the course of two weeks led to nothing. After D, I found another cat from the same shelter I’ll call B, B was special so I knew people were going to want him, I put in my adoption application the same day his profile was posted and didn’t receive a response, I talked to the shelter volunteers at my work about my interest in adopting him and I emailed again to ask more questions about B. Then it happened again and B’s profile was removed from the shelter website, the shelter still hasn’t gotten back to me about him and I’m at a loss. I tried to take my time and be patient with the shelter with D and lost out because I was too slow but I thought I did everything right to get B and losing out on him hurt just as hard. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’ve already got a space set up for the cat, I’ve talked to the volunteers, called the shelter, sent my applications, emailed them, but I still lost out on both of them and I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong and it’s beyond frustrating.

Dog has one scab on his neck - should I worry ?

Hi friends ! I Was recently having a cuddle and pets session with my dog and noticed that right where his neck meets his torso there was one spot where there was a black ...thing ?? Idk. His fur is so thick its hard to make out - but I am assuming it is an old scab ? He only has the one and everywhere else on his body his coat + Skin are healthy. I wiped at it with a wet tissue multiple times but nothing came out, only a yellowish tinge hence i believe it might be an old injury. When i touched it he was in NO pain he was just annoyed i wasnt petting him lol. He also recently went to the doctor (2-3 weeks ago) and had a full checkup and nothing of concern was brought up. I dont want to rack up a $300 vet bill again so I wanted to ask here first if this sounds super normal and could just be an injury that healed ? He wears collars but they are not of any discomfort (he has never shown signs of distress) and he has a healthy, happy, eight year old doggo otherwise. TIA !!!!

Is my cat trying to frick me???

So I have a 9 month old male cat he’s been kneading on anything plush and fluffy. Unfortunately that means my giant stuffed bear for Valentine’s Day. It’s in my bed in the space I don’t use my cat will knead with all 4 legs but recently he’s been biting my sleeve while he does it all my friends say he’s trying to hump the bear but what gets me the most is how he will not break eye contact with me while he goes at it. I’m confused snd concerned. (He’s getting his balls cut off tomorrow ) he also gets kinda aggressive if I move my arm or try to pet him during this time. He’s the first cat I’ve had and have had him since he was born. Any advice ?

What should I name my dog?

I'm getting a puppy (or two) soon. They aren't ready to leave mom yet so I have a little time. But I am trying to think of names. I want something comical or punny. For example, Bark Ruffalo, Bilbo Waggins, Hairy Pawter, Sherlock Bones, etc. I'm not set on any particular theme or anything. The puppies are lab mixes. Shoot me your ideas.

Surgery pros and cons

I can’t afford my dogs surgery to fix his broken leg. They put him in a splint after running tests which already cost me $1000.

They said without the surgery, his leg may never heal properly. They didn’t explain what that meant. I can’t afford the surgery. My only other option besides not getting the surgery is to surrender him to someone else that can afford it. He’s my family though and I can’t imagine doing that.

Anyone have any advice? I don’t want to give him up, but I want him to have the best quality life. Is it selfish to not give him to someone who can afford the surgery?

Dog Toy Cleaning

I cleaned my dogs toys by following the recommended cleaning process: soak in 1part vinegar 2 parts hot water for 15 minutes, rinse well, scrub with dish soap, rinse well, dry. I did this process with all of her toys (about 30). Now she doesn’t want to use her toys cause they smell different. She’ll pick them up then drop them and start licking her lips. How can I fix this? Is there a way to make them taste better to her without making them smelly again?

TL;DR: Dog won’t use clean toys cause they smell different, how can I fix this?

Bonding two boy rabbits - need advice!

We have one neutered rabbit named Chase who stays in our main room in our flat, free roam with a large cage for night time. We recently took home an un-neutered boy Dexter, who we put in a separate cage in the main room when we first took him home. We let them out at separate times and they would occasionally groom each other under close supervision and also sit near each other and sniff each other through their cages. There was an incident where Dexter nipped Chase during a little scuffle so we thought we’d try separating them in different rooms and wait until Dexter is neutered before we put them in the same room. Dexter seems more relaxed in the separate room, but has always been quite uninterested in being petted. He did binky and lie down in both rooms, and is maybe a bit more friendly and chilled in the new room. We just worry that Dexter is lonely as he isn’t very interested in humans and he’s the only rabbit in that room. Chase is very friendly and well bonded with myself and my partner. We are not sure whether to try and put Chase and Dexter back together in one big cage (with a separation). Or keep them separated for a few more months until Dexter has been neutered as well. Would really appreciate any advice or opinions here, thank you!

Getting my cats used to their new bedroom - help please!

I’m due to give birth next month and the baby will be sleeping in a bedside crib, so we want the cats well away from the room.

The problem is the layout of my house is pretty crappy where everything is open plan, and the only room with a door that isn’t the bedroom or bathroom is the kitchen/diner. I don’t feel crazy about them being on top of the counters during the night etc but just accepted the kitchen will need a clean down each day.

The problem is we’ve done a few nights dry runs and my little cat non stop yowls, and the big cat pounds the double doors to the point where you can hear it from one floor up. It shows up on our other sons monitor in his room and I’ve not slept well since. If we don’t lock them in that room (with food, water and litter in their usual spots), they essentially stake out our room all night til one of us needs the bathroom and then they’re impossible to remove.

I just want to get them more comfortable to the situation as I am all out of options. I was thinking about a cat tree with hammocks, if comfort is the issue. Did anyone have to cordon off the house like this before and did something in particular work for you? I need my last dregs of sleep before I have a newborn!

[Help!] Need advice on what to do with pets in (amicable) separation

Hi, I'm going through an amicable divorce and need advice on what to do with our pets. Family are not very helpful so turning to you guys!

I'm 37 and my wife is 32, we will be living in different countries in a few months. Separation is amicable. We have been together 11 years (so no animals were pre-existing).

We have 4 pets:

Cat Anne, 10 F Cat Barry, 5 M Cat Carl, 3 M Dog Xena, 9 F

I have normally been the one to take care of most of the pet stuff, including walking the dog.

Cat dynamics:

Cat Anne is a loner, but she's my loner. She would be very unhappy without me.

Cat Barry is a manly cat, asserts his dominance over Anne. Have had him since he was 5 months, he is super attached to me and has urinary problems when I go away.

Cat Carl was found in a drainpipe when he was 6 weeks. We took him in with the expectation of giving him away but Wife couldn't give him up and he became very attached to Barry. Barry was essentially a mother to Carl. Carl is quite nervous by nature, but not shy, very playful.

So now Carl is very bonded to Barry, sleeps on him, grooms him etc. Barry tolerates this happily, but is not very demonstrative back, though I do occasionally see him grooming Carl.

Obviously cats and people have priorities too: Carl is essentially Wife's cat and Anne and Barry are mine.

Dog Xena gets in well with Anne, doesn't give two poops about the other two. Barry loves Xena, even if it is u requited.

Wife understands that there may be separation difficulty, especially between Barry and Carl. Obviously she very much wants to take Carl, but she does understand that this may not be possible.

On the other hand, I would find it difficult to move on with my life alone with 1 dog and 3 cats. It has been ok with 2 of us, but it's a lot of pets for one person.

So that's the situation. What are your thoughts reddit?

My mum wants to keep my future dog outside.

I think my mum has a bad opinion on dogs because she never trained our late dog. He was really jumpy because of that but he wasn't agresive, never barked ect.

She's afraid that my dog will bark at my birds (she even came up with the idea of giving them away which is messed up imo. She knows I love them to pieces), attack our cat, pee all over the place ect.

I have the permition to get a dog but I don't want to keep her outside, especially not during winter. How do I convince her that with training she's going to be a sweetheart?

Also, is keeping her outside while I'm in school a good idea? I don't want her to pee all over the place and be bored when we have a huge backyard where she could play and meet other people (especially students of the special school nearby, they love petting my cat and I'm sure she'd get a lot of pets too).

Looking for a cat scratching post for 2 large boisterous cats? (UK)

I have 2 cats who 5 years old and are both around 6kg. They're very energetic and playful. At the moment we live in a house with a lot of relatively empty built in cabinets which they enjoy climbing/playing on/sleeping. We are due to move house, and we will no longer have this. Our new house has french doors in the living room, and I thought some kind of cat tree might be nice. We've been through about 4 or 5 cat trees in the past that have been destroyed, either due to them being quite heavy cats/from them playing.

I was just looking for one that we might be able to not bin after a couple of months? They have a couple of the Extra Tall Scratching posts from Argos at the minute which seem to last, and I only have to replace every year or 2. One cat really likes this as he is actually able to stretch and it still be long enough for him, and he also likes the scratching boards. The other one just likes to sleep quite high up.

A dog killed my cat

I guess I’m not asking for advice, just kind of grieving?? Idk why I’m writing this. Anyway, I had a cat that I ABSOLUTELY adored. My coworker asked me to dogsit his husky for the weekend and I kept her separated from my cats because they’re pretty small. I moved the litter box and I think my cat was stressed out and I woke up to a bed full of cat piss and shit and I was SO angry. I didn’t hurt her or anything, but I was just so upset with her and while I was getting stuff to clean my bed, I didn’t completely close the door I guess. The dog came in and grabbed my cat like a chew toy and broke her legs and it took me SO long to separate them and I thought she was definitely injured but was also just stunned. And then she started twitching and I immediately took her to my car to get her to a vet and she died in my car. Someone came and took the dog but I just am so angry at myself for being mad at her earlier. I’m so heartbroken. I’m in the military and I called some people and they came and helped me and just sat with me and stuff, but my leadership said they feel more bad for the kid that owns the dog and that I shouldn’t ask him to pay for her cremation. I’m not mad at him, nobody intended for this to happen. I’m not mad at the dog either, I’m just upset about the situation. And they called me and instead of saying like “do you need anything” they said “you shouldn’t take this to legal and don’t forget that he’s upset too so you should apologize and acknowledge that it’s not his fault” and I KNOW it’s not his fault, I just wouldn’t answer his calls because I just wasn’t really in the mood to hear from anyone. I told him I needed time and that I am not upset with him. Why are they making this my fault?? I don’t understand. Sorry for the rant. I’m just so fucking sad and idk what to do I guess

Injured Leg

Hello

So I left my dog home while I went out with my family. It was for about 3-4 hours. I have cameras in my house and was able to watch my dog the whole time. I noticed for a while that he was staying in the same position for a while but we all thought he was okay. After a few hours we arrived home and saw that he somehow twisted a cloth tightly around his leg (I honestly don’t know how that even happened). His blood circulation was blocked and his leg is now dark and he’s been limping for a while. He’s all sad and tired now. There’s not many vets around my area and it was late at night, so we couldn’t take him anywhere. We tried icing his leg and heating it but he’s still in pain. I’m scared that he might have to amputate his leg or something. Ik this may not be the best place to ask but there’s really no where else for me at the moment. Do you think he’ll be okay and what should I do?

Can dogs sense when you don't "like them"

Hi all!

First and foremost, I have to start off with saying I absolutely love animals, all animals. It played a huge part on why I decided to go vegan. I'm definitely more of a cat person than a dog person, but I like dogs.

My boyfriend and I have been getting very serious. He has 2 dogs, one 6m female (S) and one 6yr old male(B). For some reason, B and I just dont mesh. It absolutely breaks my heart because of course B is obviously favored by my boyfriend between the two of them. They've been through trauma together, so I try and be very sensitive to their feelings.

My boyfriend is moving in soon and B has been acting out a lot more than usual. For example, getting into trash, food, and even squeezing his way in between us any chance he gets. Its very irritating and the more it happens, the more I build up these resentful feelings. I feel so stupid typing this but the way he looks at me, feels hateful. It sucks.

My question is, can a relationship between a dog and a person be "off" due to jealousy? Can a dog tell when you're not the biggest fan of them? Can this be fixed or will B and I never click the way Im hoping for?

Side note - I'm Bs step mom. My boyfriend and his girlfriend of 4 years broke up a little over a year ago. I'm assuming this plays a role?

Thanks in advance!!

Should I get a second kitten?

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/739540717302579252/803761299548930058/20210126_155841.jpg

I got him from the adoption shelter recently. I work from home so I have all day every day to play with him. Problem is I want my cat to be as healthy and well-trained as possible so he can be a champion. So far I've been able to do just that. He's on a raw diet, knows several commands, is taking well to outside leash training, and I give him an hour of exercise each day. Thing is I don't want him to grow up to be an anti-social asshole when it comes to other cats so I'm concerned whether he should have a companion around his age in the house. Thing is as a typical grown man, I feel that one pet is truly enough. The thought of having to deal with a second cat, even if it doesn't do anything, sounds dreadful but I know cats are social animals and like companionship.

What I want to know is: is another cat necessary for his happiness and growth?

Non-Recognition Aggression Cat Help

My poor baby boy kitten (Kitten 1) needed emergency surgery this week. He has been bonded with my other kitten (Kitten 2) since birth. Upon coming home from the vet yesterday, Kitten 2 didn't seem to recognize Kitten 1 and has been hissing whenever she gets close. We've separated them (Kitten 1 is in a large crate in a different room while he recovers), but sometimes Kitten 2 will even hiss behind the closed door. I have NEVER seen Kitten 2 get aggressive before--she is as sweet as anything and will let anyone hold her, and has never given me a hard time with baths or administering medicine. Has anyone else experienced this, and what did you do to resolve it?

I know Kitten 1 probably still smells like the vet (he even smells funky to me but we cannot bathe him yet), and I've tried rubbing them both with the same towel to get Kitten 2 familiarized with the smell. I live in an apartment and am worried about reintroducing them or if they'll ever go back to being BFFs.

Raising a dog (~17 lbs) In a Studio Apartment...Am I insane?

Hey there,

I've arrived at a point in my life where I finally feel comfortable enough financially and with my career (thanks to WFH) to adopt a dog. I may be getting one as soon as Monday/Tuesday depending on if the in-person visit goes well.

And I'm kind of freaking out.

I've been around dogs my entire life. My parents have raised 4 large-breed dogs and everyone in my family has at least some kind of dog.

I have a studio apartment. I don't have a back yard or porch or anything like that, but my apartment does have a nice dog relief area, and there's a pretty huge park across the street from me.

But am I crazy for doing this? The dog I'm looking at it is about 4 years old, a terrier mix. I want to give this dog everything (it's had a bit of a chaotic life). But I'm starting to doubt myself as to whether or not I can handle raising a pet. What does a dog do all day when you're not giving it all of your attention? I've always taken care of dogs from time to time and of course enjoyed playing with them, but I've never lived with one before and I'm honestly a bit terrified of screwing it up somehow.

How do you handle restlessness? House training? Biting/destructive habits? I know, I know, there's probably a million resources out there on these things but I'm just hoping to hear from someone else who is raising a dog in an apartment and find out what kinds of things I should worry about, and what kinds things I should look out for.

I also would love to know what resources you guys prefer on things for crate training.

Basically, I guess I'm just looking for some encouragement here that what I'm doing is absolutely possible and will result in a good life for my dog.

Good alternatives to nerf darts for cats?

My boyfriend brought his nerf gun back from work today and i threw a bullet around on a whim. I discovered that my cat Jet really likes this, he ran like lightning for it, i took it away quickly and we played like that for a while. Jet ran a lot and pawed at it but didn't bite it much. He tried like twice but i get it away from him almost as soon as he reaches it.

I love how much fun he had but I'm sure it would be bad for him if he bites it too much and accidentally eats a peice, not to mention of somehow one is lying around and he finds and eats the whole thing. So i would love to know if anyone knows of a sturdier alternative; something small but not small enough to choke on, lightweight but that can withstand a little chewing. It would be awesome if we could play chase like that, i think we both are more invested going after the darts ❤

how can i get my cat to eat

so my cat moved into my apartment today from my parent's house, and he’s been hiding under my bed all day, which doesn’t super surprise me. but he hasn’t really been eating or drinking much, and i'm pretty sure he hasn't used his cat box. i realize he's stressed and i'm not expecting him to acclimate any time soon. is there any way i can get him more open to eating or using the cat box, or is this just a waiting game?

What are everyone’s thoughts on talking to your pet through a camera while not home?

I have a cat and a Google home that I can talk to my cat through while I’m not home. But I’m hesitant to do it because I feel bad that he might Think I’m home and not understand why I’m not showing myself. I was talking to him earlier and hearing him meow but I can’t tell if they’re meows of being upset or enjoying hearing my voice

Advice needed for new 3 month old kitty

Hi everyone! I just adopted a 3 month old kitty. She’s very young and I understand this has been a stressful situation for her- being taken to a new place separated from her mom and litter.

I put her in my room to get her used to the apartment and my smell. She’s eaten and used her litter box but rarely drinks water. She hides in the deepest corners of my room and constantly and seems to be extremely scared. Every time I enter the room or she catches me looking at her, she runs away.

Does anyone have any tips to getting her to come around? I know she’ll be shy and scared for a while but I’m worried about her not getting enough water.

Old Dog learning new... phobias?

Hi all, I'm looking for some help from other magnificent pet owners. My hound has picked up a new fear that has never been present before, but I wanted to see if anyone had experience with this sort of thing before or had some good ideas for calming her through the new fear.

She's about 9-10 and I've had her since she was about a year and a half. She's always been a bit shy and lethargic inside, as most hounds are, and a nut while outside. She is hilariously stubborn and we love her for it. We've been trying to get her comfortable with hardwood floors her entire life, but even with regular grooming her digging claws and I guess her past has made it difficult, so we rock rugs and runners everywhere for her.

The new issue is coach whistles. We know she's afraid of the fire alarm, so we figured it could be something like that, but she isn't always afraid of coach whistles... she is only afraid when Alex Horne blows his whistle during Taskmaster....

We can watch full soccer games and other sports without a care in the world, but for some reason, every time Alex Horne blows his whistle she begins shivering and hides behind one of us.

I've never had a coaches whistle before, so maybe it's just a new sound, or maybe it's too similar to the fire alarm?

Has anyone run into a similar issue with their pet, and how did you help them get over or around the new anxiety?

Trimming a cats claws, or leaving them be with occasional trims?

The MiL has a cat which we have significant difficulty trimming her claws. Namely, the cat HATES being handled unless it's on her terms. The MiL lives alone with the cat, so the cat is also only occasionally meeting us.

Now, the wife read something that suggested that, as long as the cat has one or more decent scratching posts and you monitor the claws to make sure they're not curling around into the pads, that you don't really need to trim their claws. The cat does have a nice cat tower with scratching posts, we also just bought one of those carboard scratchers as well (which the MiL said the cat was going to town on the day we brought it in)

So, is this correct, can we reduce the number of times we try to trim the claws? I'm also suspecting the suggestion from some here would be to either "purrito" the cat or scruff the cat to trim the claws. Well, to purrito the cat, you need to be able to grab the cat, and to scruff it you have to be able to grab it. Now, my other thought was, and we've not really looked into this, are there cat treats out there that will "calm" a cat? Such as the claims made by CBD infused treats?

The one thing we've noticed is, on the occasions the wife has gone to trim the claws, and the cat has been napping on the bed, getting the cat while she's still waking up works, she's FAR calmer at that time. The problem is, the MiL is almost a 45 minute drive from our place, so getting there while the cat is napping is, difficult...

My cat is trying to kill herself because of our new kitten

We got a kitten about 6 months ago and our 2nd old cat was never find of him as he chases her away from food and attacks her, we took her to the vet as she was developing a dry skin down her back and he was saying that she was cutting herself there with her tongue due to stress levels, he prescribed some antibiotics to stop it for a while but said that if we had changed something we should fix it and said that the new cat is probably the problem and suggested we try and get rid of him or to find ways to relieve her stress, do any of you guys have any idea of other solutions. I checked a few of the ones available in my country, and a quick google search later I found this list that included: Wellness Core, Hills, Royal Canin, Orijen, Purina Proplan, Chicopee and Friskies.

A trial week before I before I permanently bring my cat to a new apartment.

So i’m bringing my cat to my student apartment for a week to see if he can adjust from living at my moms house. My apartment allows pets but obviously has a pet deposit and pet rent, but I don’t want to drop $400 on him just to find out he is miserable here.

Is this really a risk worth taking? My apartment is far away from the management building and maintenance drives by a few times a week. The problem is my cat loves hanging by the window. Will it be to obvious that there’s a cat in the window?

I need some help

Earlier this morning I was eating some chocolate coins that my grandmother had gotten me as a gift. I had accidentally dropped one and I haven’t been able to find it since, I’m worried about my dogs finding and eating it. It doesn’t seem like enough to kill a dog, maybe at least some stomach issues and maybe a little vomit at most. But I’m more worried about the metal covering the chocolate coin was wrapped in, my dogs have incredibly sensitive stomachs and I worry it may cause severe damage if they ingest it. I’m looking everywhere for the coin and no luck. So if my dogs get a hold of the coin before I do, and they end up investing both the chocolate and the metal, what should I do? I’m planning on keeping them away from where I dropped the coin for the time being. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Should I take her with me?

Hey guys, so I’d like a bit of help with making this decision and would appreciate any help at all. So I’ll be relocating soon. Right now I’m at work all day and have chosen to leave the puppy with her siblings during the day time as I don’t want her developing any behavioural issues from staying home all day but soon I’ll be relocating and will be home almost all of the day for the next few months. I was wondering if I should just leave this puppy with its family on the streets or if I should take it with me. Life on the streets for dogs around here isn’t horrible. I’d love to walk the dog everyday once I move so that’s not an issue, however I don’t know what situation I’ll be in in a year from now and whether I’ll have to leave her home alone all day IN A YEAR FROM NOW, or be forced to leave her with my parents. So I guess my question is whether I should relocate with her or leave her to be? I really want to have the company as I’ll be living alone next year, but don’t want to bite more than I can chew. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Also please do ask if any further info is required.

Tldr: Stray puppy, should I relocate with or leave her here? Will be free to take care of it for the next year and would love the company but may be too busy in a year from now and have to leave her alone at home all day.

What are the risks of taking in a stray cat?

Long-time (and current) dog owner here. Never owned a cat. Have no experience taking care of one. Last fall I noticed there were some stray kittens in my alley (I live in an urban area). Now that it's winter, I've noticed at least one of them hugging up against the basement windows of mine and my neighbors houses, presumably to get warm. My two dogs normally bark at other animals from the window, yet are nice to them when they are up-close and can smell them (admittedly they've never been that close to a cat).

At least once this cat has seemed to want to approach me when I am entering my house, and I have been tempted to let it in. Since it is an alley-cat, I know that it's feral, and has likely been surviving on mice and garbage. Is it worth the risk of taking it in? What ARE the risks? Even if my dogs accepted it, what beyond that?

I feel sorry for the poor thing, but I also don't want to invite problems into my life that I can't afford (vet bills) or properly take care of (unknowns, since I am inexperienced with cats). Is it better that I just leave the poor thing on the streets?

Help - I have a devil cat

If someone can help, I would be very thankful. We have a 9 month old male cat. He was always more wild and playful than any other cat I've had but I assumed it is because he didn't have contact with his mother from when he was about a month or a month and a half old (we didn't separate him, we just found him that small under a car). The thing is, recently he started acting out. We tought him not to attack legs, which he stopped for a few months but now he's back at it. We are just walking and he jumps at the back of our knee (which hurts very much if your leg isn't covered with clothes). He was also peeing on plastic bags from time to time and we learned to put them away, but recently he peed on a paper bag in a closet and a few days ago on a bed in which we sleep. I cleaned the bed and I already caught him a few more times preparing for doing it again. Also, he starts running and making noise as soon as we go to bed, then he falls asleep about one hour later and wakes us up again at about 4 AM, at which point we have to put him in another room where he gets bored and falls asleep again. If anyone can help, please do, I'm going nuts. We tried putting several litter boxes in the apartment, we tried negative reinforcement as well as positive - nothing seems to work. We plan on castrating him because he get unbearable when he is in heat (very loud meowing at around midnight, crying to let him out, urinating even more around the apartment, not eating, etc.), but I hope there is another way of calming him down.

Help! I adopted a dog with fleas today.

I went and rescued a puppy from San Antonio, today. He was there for about 5 days, and is pretty healthy. About 4 months. Inspected, neutered, chipped, but still came with fleas. I know that I should go and get a flea collar of course, but I can’t wash him because he just got fixed! I’m nervous that the fleas will disperse throughout the home even with a collar, especially since I can’t bathe him.

What should I do about the home. He’s been here for one night. Tomorrow will be his first full day in the house, but I want to ensure I’m taking the proper precautions! Is there a way I can clean him without scrubbing him?

If I were to have an exterminator come out tomorrow, would it take care of things? I’m seeing this is like a 3 month process, which gives me a total panic attack as I’m not the ~calm~ type. Help me, haha I’m stressing out and want the best for my home, and pets.

Should your child dig the grave?

SO me and my fiance are arguing about a pet burial. I'm saying that if our future child has a pet and they were to pass that we should be responsible for digging the grave then hold a funeral for the pet altogether. He is saying that they are responsible for the pet so they should dig the grave and bury it then we hold the funeral. But I think that it is totally going to fuck up the kid. I mean if they want to help dig the grave then yes because then they are possibly a bit more prepared for it mentally. If they aren't in high school or older, they shouldn't do it.

What do you guys think?

Moral Delema - “Stealing a cat”

So last night I found a young cat while I was out walking my two other cats (not on a leash, they just need supervised outdoor time because one gets in fights with other cats and the other is a young female waiting for spaying appointment). I put my cats up and went back out to get this cat. She came to me easily and seemed hungry. I brought her inside and fed her and posted on Facebook about a found cat. A few hours later her owners were found. I got proof that it’s their cat but When they came to pick her up I asked what her name was and she’s said she didn’t have a name and they just called her kitty. They also said that she wanders a lot but never this far. It bothered me a bit but I let it go. I did warn them that there is at least one intact male in the area and they kind of shrugged it off. She’s a barn cat but it seems there son is at least somewhat attached and she is very friendly.

Tonight when I was out with the cats and she came running up to me again. It was almost dark so I brought her in. Right now my plan is to let her go in the morning and she can make her way home but I’m really considering just keeping her and getting her fixed myself. But I don’t want to steal a loved cat... anyone have any opinions?

I need help with my cat and my new puppy

I need help with my orange tabby cat and my new puppy

I recently got a new pet, a brown puppy, i dont know wich breed or type, i tried to make my cat meet the new pet since i want them to coexist without trying to fight or something and since the puppy is just a few months old and my cat is 3 years old that would end up badly

The first time i tried to make them meet each other the cat screamed and tried to attack him, i was able to restrain him but i ended up with some scratches and a bite, something unusual from my cat since he usually just sleeps on my bed or on me

Now im forced to keep the cat out most of the day since the little guy likes to go around or stay in very vulnerable places, i fear that this will make me distance from my cat and that he will search for another palce to live since he spends the day either outside or in my bed

I dont want my cat to go away or something like that because i love him and he has become a part of the family, also i dont want my new puppy to get hurt or badly injured because my cat doesnt like him, i dont want to take him away because of my cat neither

So i need help on how do i make them know each other and not try to fight between themselves, how do i make them coexist safely also i would appreciate any advice that could be useful

older cat pinning kitten down & biting neck?

we’ve had our older female cat for almost a year, so she’s had the whole house to herself for that long. we brought home a new a new male kitten (8 weeks) roughly a month ago. we introduced them slowly as she was not happy with him at all. we went through about a week of hissing & growling but she learned that he wasn’t leaving & now they are fine together. they sleep together, eat together, & play. she likes to groom him & he meows when he can’t find her & she comes running to find him. i’ve noticed that when they play, she sometimes gets too rough. she’ll pin him down & bite his neck & face & he cries but she doesn’t stop. i have to clap my hands for them to stop. after i separate them, he runs back at her to play again & then instantly starts crying because she pins him down. she has caused 2 ulcers in his eye from scratching him & im not sure what else to do. i don’t think she understands how big she is compared to him. any advice?

Need some advice and I guess reassurance

My cat has hyperthyroidism (was notified by vet this morning) and is now doing the topical medicine in his ear. We have to wear gloves and wash our hands after as we aren’t allowed to touch the stuff apparently since it’s absorbed through skin. When we first got the diagnosis, we were told we could do pills which would also be twice a day. There is also apparently food that could help instead of medicine or there is even the injection that is supposedly a permanent solution and is $1,500.

After doing the inner ear topical medicine once in his ear, I’m already feeling like I should have chosen the pill for him. He’s never taken pills before so my vet thought that since he free feeds, he might not take it, but just now thinking, I know he would eat it immediately as if it were a treat. We’ll probably do the 60 days of topical and then try the pills as long as the doctor approves of that.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this with a cat around 13 years old (or even younger or older if you have a story to tell). I’m just so afraid for my baby. He has a heart murmur that may be associated with the hyperthyroidism. I’m just afraid I’m not making the right choices for him. He already has a bacterial infection in his ear that he has ear drops for for the next two weeks that I didn’t think about when choosing the topical solution in his ear. The vet says it’s fine to use together, but Morty HATES things going in his ear. He will be all twitchy for hours after his ears get even slightly wet. Does anyone have advice on dealing with hyperthyroidism in cats?

Spay gone tragically wrong

About 5 months ago, I rescued a tiny kitten shivering under a bush after a flash flood. We brought it home, fed it, gave it love, named her Maya, and did everything we could to make her feel like part of the family. She took to it with wild abandon and she wound her way into our hearts. Our other cats loved and accepted her as well. She was perfect, healthy, a sheer joy to have around.

Today I took her to the vet for what I thought was a routine spay. Of course we were worried. There's always worry with these types of procedures, when a family member needs any kind of surgery. I took her in at 7:30 in the morning and 3 hours later, the vet called to say her heart stopped suddenly and despite all efforts, they couldn't revive her.

I don't know what to do or how to feel. She was our baby, our little miracle, and now she's gone. We're reeling and completely gutted. How does this happen? Why? I know there was a risk, but I thought we were doing the right thing, for the good of her health and well being. I thought we were being responsible and now, she's gone.

The vet sent her to lab for necropsy and she''s being cremated. We'll get her remains back in the next week. None of this makes sense though and I'm beating myself up thinking that I should've waited or had tests done, something, anything ...

I've heard of this kind of thing happening to others, but I never thought it would happen to us.

Cat food bowls

So basically I know cats have a complex system of digestion and having a bowl flat on the floor can cause them to be sick more often (from experience and my cats vet) so it's recommended the bowl be higher up.

My pet was put to sleep yesterday, how do I cope?

, it was very sudden and even now I can’t process the fact his not here anymore. He was playful and acting just the day before with no signs anything was wrong with him.

The next day he was aware but he didn’t want to move or eat.

I still remember him still wagging his tail as he greeted me but still not getting up from the floor. He didn’t look in any pain when my Mum had to pick him up to take him to the car only this curious and confused look on his face like oh, where are we going now?

That was the last time I saw him aware of his surroundings though. The vet told us that he had internal bleeding and they had found a large mass and he was going downhill more rapidly. He was too old to survive an operation with a heart condition as well.

So we had no choice but to put him down. We were able to say goodbye to him but he didn’t seem to be aware of his surroundings or us though he didn’t seem to be in any pain just panting heavily.

Due to covid only two of us were aloud to be there when he was put to sleep. My sister and my mum were with him for his last moments, he died in my sisters arms. I only can hope that he could smell us and he knew that we with him and that he knew my mum and my sister were with him until the end.

It’s so hard to process that’s his gone, to think that he was perfectly fine the day before that.

It does give me some comfort to know that he liked the vets, he used to hate it when he was a little puppy but grew to love it when he got older and he loved saying hello to the receptionist.

My parents at the time didn’t realise how sick he truly was so they wouldn’t have been that stressed handing him over to the vets so that gives me some comfort to know he wouldn’t have felt their stress when he was aware of his surroundings. They even told me that he wagged his tail when he saw the vets, like how he greets us.

Yet I can’t stop myself from thinking if we had found the mass earlier could he have been saved or was there truly no signs? He did feel nauseous now and again but that was it.

How do you cope with a pets death especially if they were fine the day before and you didn’t see it coming?

Dog/Cat Wars...I need peace from piss

I rescued a kitten 2 years ago. She was extremely small, her mom stopped feeding her, and because she was so puny I think my dog didn’t mind her. They were always playing and cuddling, sharing plates of food, and just being genuinely adorable. Now that she is older, the dog is a jealous freak and won’t let her get anywhere near me. In fact she cautiously approaches me when he’s asleep next to me and she doesn’t see him on the bed (he blends in) and as soon as she detects him or he detects her, it’s over. She is desperate for affection and attention from me and the second he is away from me, she will run right up and take her chance. Anyway, they’re both fairly well behaved and house broken, but my dog has taken over my bed and won’t let her up on it, so now she’s resorted to hopping up and PISSING on the end of my bed while staring right at me. I even swat at her and yell for her to stop and she doesn’t even care. She’s like “bitch you’re taking this.” I know damn well that she is vengefully doing this, and also territorially as a way to claim her space on the bed. I try to get her to come up and lay with us but she’s no dummy and I’m not really sure how to handle it when my dog growls or lunges at her. He’d never bite her or attack but he like bonks her away. I don’t want to scold him for doing something that’s instinctive to him, but I’ve gotta curb this behavior and be able to give my cat some attention. I’d love some advice or experiences from others who have gone through something similar and how you fixed it, but any and all advice is appreciated.

Adopting in lockdown

I've been really desperate to get a dog for such a long time. Recently I've been approved by and adoption service after a couple of interviews. The dog will be rehomed from Romania to the UK.
I am sure that I would be a great owner and because of lockdown I have at least 6 months and probably longer to commit to training and getting the dog used to my home and me. I am just nervous about what happens if I eventually go back to work full time (usually 8-5/6). I'm a single guy and my family live in another city although I have plenty of friends nearby.

I know it's not fair to leave a dog on it's own all day so I would be looking to get doggy day care or some local friends to help out during the day. I'm quite a social person who travels a lot and goes out at weekends and likes to go for 2 week breaks. Financially I'm ok but I have a house which is obviously a big commitment too.

I guess I'm just looking for some advice from people over whether or not this is too big a commitment to make in lockdown just in case things go back to how they were and I struggle to adjust? Advice very welcome!

Parakeet, need help

We’ve had a parakeet for 9 years, and he’s been on his own, but 2 months ago we received a bird from a friend of ours. Now they have an egg and ever since they got the egg i havent cleaned their cage because im scared the female will be uninterested in the egg if my scent reaches it. The nest which the egg is in, is on one of the sides. My parakeet hasnt been very talkative and he always a little sort of moody when his cage hasnt been cleaned. Can i still clean the cage if the egg isnt in the cage itself?

Durable pin brush for cat?

My cat enjoys her pin brush so much that she "love bites" the plastic tips off. Any recommendations for a pin brush with durable tips?

She is a medium hair and doesn't enjoy slicker brushes (I can get in a few strokes, but not the full grooming she needs) so I think another pin brush will be our best bet. I'm going to try cleaning off the dog's comb and seeing whether that works for her, but I suspect the tines may bother her too.

Would I Be A Horrible Monster For Bringing My Kitty Back To The Humane Society?

I went to the shelter a few weeks ago looking for a cat. I drove the 2 hours for one of the adult cats, only to find out that he had been adopted. There was a little 4 month old kitten that had his little paw stuck out of the cage reaching out to me. I felt so bad, I asked if I could hold him and I fell in love. The appointments were 30 minute allotments, and they were watching me and asking questions the whole time (emergency contact, free clinic visit, etc) I felt so rushed and decided to bite the bullet. So I brought the baby home and he is literally the most well behaved cat i have ever seen. I expected to do a lot of training because he’s a kitten but he doesn’t scratch my furniture, he doesn’t bite my hands, he’s so friendly and cuddly. I got him checked out by the vet and he had a horrible ear infection- 3 different bacteria and one type of yeast ): He hates the ear drops and whines, but never bites/scratches. He’s also a derp and loves to sleep on his back. I love him so much.

BUT, here’s the issue: I play with him 2-3 hours a day (like hard cardio running around my apartment with a teaser toy) but he’s NEVER tired! I underestimated the energy of a kitten. He hates the few times I’ve taken him on a walk and refuses to move. Now it’s raining for the next week so I may try again after. He just seems bored and unhappy. Even while playing with him I try to keep the teaser moving but he’ll lose interest. I think he’d be so much happier with a kitten friend. He came from a house with 5 siblings and he was so entertained when I introduced him to my sister in laws cat. They played the whole time, chasing each other and play fighting. This is causing me so much anxiety as I feel he’d be a million times happier in a 2-cat home. I wish I could get a 2nd cat but it’s against my apartment policy. When I mention this to my partner, friends, family they basically berate me and tell me I made a commitment and I’m being selfish. However, I’ve been checking the website of the place where I adopted him and all the kittens get adopted within days. He’s 5 months old now and so cute, I have no doubt in my mind he’d be adopted. I called them and told them about how I felt and the lady said in the most judgmental tone ever “so you want to give him back because he plays too much”. NO that’s not it, I’m happy to play with him for hours because I play music and it’s basically my exercise for the day. But I don’t think I can replace an actual kitten to play with. I don’t know, I feel like I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I can’t take care of my birds anymore

I have had two budgies for about a year now and they’ve caused me more and more stress everyday however i didn’t want to bring this up with my parents as they’d blame it on something else , it’s gotten to the point where i can’t deal with the constant shouting from the birds so i suggested we move the birds to a different room my mother completely disregarded the fact of my mental state from this and only saw this as me being lazy .If i even tried to explain what feel like to them they’d laugh and tell me to stop imagining, it’s happened before. However if i cannot move the room they are in i believe that they could be better in a different home , with someone who can take care for them . The problem is i don’t know how to bring this up with my parents and for them to agree , i know they’ll get mad at me and only think i’m lazy and that my mind is perfectly fine . Please someone help. before i do something stupid .

Animal Abuse Should Be Taken More Serious

I have two dogs and can't stand the idea of someone abusing them or treating them poorly. Many animals literally spend their whole lives just trying to love their owners and don't harm anybody. I would even argue that my dogs are more human than certain people. Obviously not in physical stature, but rather in the way they convey an emotion or have advanced thought. It's because of this that I find people who abuse animals absolutely disgusting. I've had to yell at a friend of mine for abusing his animals, and I think it should be than a misdemeanor in the eyes of the law. Animals can't speak up and defend themselves making the act of abusing them even more messed up. So please even if it's not seen as a problem in the eyes of the law, call out people who abuse animals because they are the real animals

My puppy gave me a scare

My puppy (8 weeks) was in her cage when she started barking and made these hiccup/gaging noises. She also seemed to have a bloated stomach. I was really worried and I started searching up what it could be then she made the hiccup/gaging noises again and she seemed to return to normal and the bloating went away. Anyone know what this was?

Losing a Dog-Waves of Grief

In a few days, it will have been 6 months since I’d unexpectedly had to say goodbye to my dog and my entire world. Some days are better than others, and it’s not that would ever want to not think about my best friend, but these waves of grief hit hard. It’s always random... then BAM. My thoughts are flooded with memories and my heart physically aches. I want to be happy and have so much gratitude for our time spent together, but I just HURT. I feel his presence. All of the time. Sometimes I can’t help but sob. Sometimes I sit in silence, numb to everything. After his passing, I slept on his dog bed for weeks. I wished it all was a bad dream. And I felt guilty for feeling this way. I feel guilty still. I just want to hear from others, how do you stay connected to your deceased dog and keep those memories alive without feeling such heartache? I have yet to scatter his ashes or have any sort of memorial, and I feel like I’ve trapped him somehow. Can this be? What am I doing/not doing to bring on these sudden spurts of despair? I just feel empty and incomplete. Mostly guilty for feeling these ways. I have so much to be grateful for, and I remind myself of this daily. But these waves of grief make me feel as though I’ve been punched in the gut, or like my heart is being twisted around like a rag, or like suddenly my source of oxygen has been cut off. What I really want to know is, how can I cope? Is there anything that will help me feel closer to my angel pup in these times? I miss him so much...

Getting a pet with potential allergies?

I've had fluctuating allergies to pets throughout the years. Was around lots of cats and dogs when I was younger, no problems. Once my family cat passed away, I seemed to gradually develop an allergy to both cats and dogs. Would get sneezy and stuffed up whenever I went to my grandparents houses, who had cats and/or dogs. For the past few years, I have been around little to no pets. Only cats I've been around have been at a friends house, and I have no issues with them the couple of hours I'm there for at a time.

Currently I live alone in a condo, allowed cats but not dogs. I would love to get a pet. I went and got allergy tested (pin prick). Had no allergy to dogs, and a +1 allergy to cats. The doctor explained that this is just a snapshot in time, and that allergies fluctuate over time, which could explain why its changed for me over the years.

So I guess my question is, how do I deal with this? Are there any particular cats that tend to be "low allergy"? Is it common to just slowly overcome a pet allergy if exposed to the animal for long enough? If I were to get one from my local humane society, is it possible to return an adoption if you just can't handle it (absolutely last option, would hurt a ton to have to do this).

Bad conditions for a worthy life for my dog

Hello, I've been feeling very down as of late due to seeing the conditions in which my dog lives, so I'm going to elaborate on me and my dog's story.

I'm a young adult from Norway, on my way to start at Uni autumn later this year. When I was about eleven years old my parents got us a dog; a lovely black and white mixed flatcoated retriever and border collie. Everyone loved him, played with him, went on walks with him. We already had a cat, with whom my dog became great friends. We lived a little on the outskirts - far away from the closest villages - so we could take him unleashed with us into the forest; he could run and play tug-of-war with bushes to his heart's content. We also lived close to a little beach, which meant we could take him with us so he could swim there during the warm summer months.

Speed forwards a couple of years: videregående skole - the Norwegian equivalent of high school / upper secondary - has started. I'm still living with my parents in my home municipality. Well, parent - to be more exact; my parents had recently gotten a divorce, meaning my father moved out of the house. This is the start of the worsening of my dog's living conditions. For, while we were four people in the household, only I and my father had the ability to walk and play with our dog on a regular basis; my mother suffers from ME, and my sister is both a lot younger and weaker than me and she hangs with friends spread across our very large municipality, so she's away from home at sleepovers very often. So my mother often has days where she can barely get out of bed, and my dog is so strong that he could easily pull my sister into the ground he has different plans than her. In other words: I'm the only one who's consistantly able to walk and play with our dog.

Second year of videregående - our municipality only offers the first of three years, so I must find some other place to continue studying. After moving away I was only able to go home the occasional "long weekend" or break. My mother and sister still lived in the aforementioned house on the outskirts of civilisation. My mother made a great effort to walk my dog as often as she was able to, and my sister - when she had friends over - went on walks with my dog together. It was sad coming home seeing my dog just laying in a sofa or a chair most of the day when he wasn't outside just sitting there staring at the road passing our house. Later on our cat - by now a lazy old "gjellamons" - was found in our garage wheezing and clawing with his final breaths. He was euthanised and died the moment after the syringe was injected; he had presumably poisoned himself with antifreeze.

Third year of videregående - my final year before going to uni. My mother and father finally got our house sold; it was way to large and expensive to be justifiable for my mother and sister to live in by themselves. My mother and sister went on to move into a medium-sized flat in the municipal centre. I was still living away, and with this being the final year I have even less time than before for going home. Even though I've not been able to come hom very much, it warms my heart to see how happy he gets when he sees me walking off the bus with my suitcase in hand. But the next moment it breaks my heart seeing the conditions in which he lives: the flat is not particularily big, the outdoors area for my dog is very limited, and being unleashed outside is a foregone part of my dog's life. Walks and playing are short and far between, and my dog mostly spends his days the exact same way: sleeping on the sofa, sleeping under the table by the sofa, eating, and going outside for a little while walking back and forth. The only quality-of-life improvement my dog has gotten since moving to the flat, has been my sister getting a kitten, with whom my dog has become good friends - just like with our previous cat (<3). This kitten is very playful and active, so he and my dog run around in the flat chasing eachother.

My dog's always had very strong separation anxiety, but when we lived at our old home, he got used to us leaving and mostly scheduled times. Now that my father's gone from his life, I've moved away, and he lives in a new flat, my mother can't go anywhere as he will drool all over the flat and cry. We can't have anyone watching him, as he gets even more anxious at unfamiliar places. He's only been at one place throughout his life where he's been happy away from us - some dog farm in the neighbouring municipality. Not to be confused with this other dog farm in another neighbouring municipality he went to ONCE because he basically came home after his stay there depressed and half-dead looking, which probably made his separation anxiety even worse. At the good dog farm he was taken care of by a lovely family who took care of people's dogs when they wanted to go on vacation. There he got to socialise with many other dogs, they went on frequent walks in packs, and the kids of the family played with the dogs.

Right now I'm lying in bed, next to my dog, trying not to cry thinking about how boring and mundane my dog's life's become the last two-to-three years. I just want my dog to have a good and worthy life. It also makes me sad knowing how much my father loved - and still loves - my dog, probably never being able to see him again. I feel a need to vent and share, so I made this throwaway because I'm paranoid of my family finding this post, even though I know that no one of them uses reddit.
