Cat spayed without surgery

  • Cat
  • Sex: M
  • Age: Approx 6 months
  • Breed: DSH

Hi, Yesterday we had an appointment to neuter my cat about 9 AM, We went there and we did the operations and came home and the cat was confused and scared and etc.. which i searched online and found out it was ok, I don't know how the male neutrition is done but they cut a line on his genitals and did something, later they told us we don't put in stitches for cats and they were open, we were told for four days we have to insert 0.5CC Betadine (Povidone-iodine) into each of his genitals twice a day, is this a normal way to neuter cats? Won't he have problems in the future? also for his pain we got pills by a vet.

Please help: cat lost in apartment walls

We have recently been moving out of our 2nd floor (only two floors) apartment and in order to keep our pets safe in doors, we kept them in the bathroom so they couldn’t escape. One was still in there but the other is missing. I looked under the sink and he had prayed away the wall into the plumbing behind the tub. I can see down and there is a crawl space about 3 ft down. I am worried sick. He is always so quiet when he is scared. We tried tempting him with his favorite food. Calling him. Nothing. It’s been about 7 hours now since we notice he was gone. We checked with maintenance and they said this happens a few times a year and to just wait. Any advice is welcome. We plan to be at the apartment all day working so I’m hoping he will come out when it seems normal. I can’t stop crying though. I am worried he will never find his way back out or if he jumped down, won’t be able to get back up through the narrow passage way.

Unexplained Sneezing

Hello People of Reddit,

I have no explanation (in fact I am asking you) as to WHY my pets are sneezing. My dog and two cats have been sneezing the last four days while we have no idea why. We have a 1.5 year old son who laughs, so he helps us notice when our cats/dog sneeze.

Any thoughts or explanations why ALL of our pets are sneezing? The family has been mildly sick, but I didn’t think it would transfer to them. I am glad to answer questions. Thanks.

Bird advice

So nearly 5 months ago my budgie died and I've starting thinking about getting another bird. I've had several budgies now and absolutely love them but I've been thinking about trying a larger bird. That said, I was wondering if anyone knows what would be a 'safe' step up? I don't want anything truly large, so no macaws or the like. Just something that maybe lives a little longer or is less prone to becoming sick?

Thinking about making the first step and taking my cat out for a walk in one of those "capsule" like backpacks

So I've been thinking about taking my cat out to the park in a leash but I first want to take her out in one of those "capsule" backpacks where they can see everything and you can take them even to pet friendly places. My cat is a rescue from approximately 1 year old. When she first got into my house, she liked to jumped the fence and walk in a vacant lot that is next to me. Right now she gets scared if we open the front gate and runs into the house.... so that's why I am thinking about the backpacks walks first... advice please 🙏

Does anyone have pets that don’t care about them?

I’ve had cats most of my life and for the most part they’ve been great. But my current one is really stand-offish and it bums me out a little. I’ve had her for a little over two years now and as much as I play with and spend time with her I get the feeling she could take or leave me. She won’t even let me pick her up. It just makes me miss my old ones even more. Feels like I’m raising a teenager.

should i get a frog?

I'm thinking about getting a White's Tree Frog, ive read that they are great for first time amphibian owners, and generally deal quite well with handling in comparison to other amphibians. I work at a pet store and we kave reptile and amphibian supplies there as well as feeder insects so, aside from the habitat which i will have to get elsewhere because we don't stock tall terrariums, i should have easy access to any supplies needed.

I've always loved frogs and I'd love to have one of my own but im not sure its the best idea for the frog. in my house their are currently 2 dogs and 2 cats, and i am concerned about the frog's well-being, obviously i would have it on a sturdy table where it isn't at risk of being knocked over, and i intend to make sure my door is closed when I'm not there so i dont have to worry about unsupervised pets trying to jump up and see it.

any hot takes? let me know if you have any good resources on caring for a White's Tree Frog and if you think its a good idea for me to get given my circumstances.

Has FancyFeast changed the amount of food per can?

A. It seems like less food in each can recently, although the labeled can weight has not changed

B. I have heard from Truck drivers that the net weight has went down when weighing. And, since can volume & shape seems to have not changed, they must ship same amount of cans.

So either there is less food in each can and they are lying on the can, they are making the can out of lighter materials, or I am wrong.

I'm wondering if others also feel that it is less food per can?

Did I let my cat out of safe room too soon? Need help pls.

I recently moved homes with my cat [1 year and 3 mo, neutered male, indoors only] (into my student house from my parent's house) and within the first 10 min of being there he was already exploring my entire room, which surprised me as he can be quite shy.

He wasn't too enthusiastic about my housemates dropping in to say hi, watching them warily from under my desk. I set him up in my room as I did when I first got him with all his favourite toys, blankets that smell like him, his scratch posts, his litterbox, his food etc. We've been sticking to our normal routine back home.

Last night after we finished our pre-bedtime routine, he sprinted out of my room upstairs, saw my housemates, froze and ran back to my room. He did this twice. Today, he kept waiting by my door and meowing to be let out. I left the door open and let him explore at his own pace, supervising him the whole time. It all went fine until he went to the top floor (room is in the basement) and he peed in the bathtub.

Prior to this he had used his litterbox a couple times. He's never had a litterbox issue before. I cleaned it up with enzymatic cleaner and ushered him back to my room with a toy. I have been keeping him there all afternoon (he's just been sleeping). What should my next steps be? Should I let him explore again, or keep him in this room for a while longer?

Moving into new place with my cat (advice please)

I am a 21 year old guy and have started the process of moving out of my parents house (YAY!). I have found a place that I am going to go an rent with 2 of my best friends, who constantly come over to my place.

Now where my concern comes into is my cat. I found this cat on the side of the highway and raised him since he was 4 weeks old. He is an indoor cat and while he is a little asshole, he is my little guy and follows me everywhere.

My friends both like my cat well enough, and my cat definitely likes one of them and comes over to be petted by him every once and a while, while they are here.

My only concerns are making sure that they keep my cat an indoor cat while we live together and don’t let him out. They both had more outdoor cats and haven’t really understood the indoor cat thing, but personally the new place is by a busy road, and I have seen a few neighbors cats get hit by cars or attacked by animals so I have always kept my cars as indoor cats.

I am fairly sure a conversation might work but I was wondering if there was anything else I should do?

Please help

Severe bladder stones-advice greatly appreciated

Hi all! I have a 9 year old schnauzer yorkie mix who I adopted when she was around 6 months old due to her original owners not having time for her and keeping her crated fir 20ish hours a day! This caused her to hold her bladder for far too long, and coupled with genetic predisposition due to her breed (and after finding and connecting with two owners who the same kind of dog from the same breeder most likely), we have all three been dealing with the most severe/worst bladder stones any of our vets have ever seen.

About three years ago. 8 noticed Ng dig feeling unwell abs imnediatejy took her to an er vet. She was miserable- shaking in pain, couldn’t urinate, etc. after some X-rays abs ultrasounds they discovered her urethra was completely blocked from bladder stones, causing severe infection, distended abdomen, recurring/constant bladder infections, and blocked urine. She was immediately placed on an IV to treat the infection that had almost become septic abs to manage pain, and a catheter was tried to be placed, but she was too inflamed fir it to successfully be done. She was held at the er to stabilize for two. Nifty as and went into emergency surgery once her vitals were at a healthy level. Over 100 stones were removed!!!! From a 16 pound dog. She was placed on a strict rx diet only, but unfortunately, she’s once again in the ER stabilizing, awaiting emergency surgery tomorrow morning.

She’s my child. I’m totally heartbroken. I wish I could take her pain away, but unfortunately, the vet said that even with rx inky dust, some dogs are just genetically predisposed to this abs there is no cure.

Anyone whse experience AJ string similar and have any advice/alternative treatment suggestions?

Thank you.

Durable hand puppets for wrestling with a cat?

So I've got a kitten nearing a year old and he is a sweet little guy named Matcha. I had another cat before that was a big-boned stray who liked to wrestle. With some practice my hands were only moderately mangled. So either because of my history, or because my cats a psycho, he loves to jump into walls and wrestle more than anything. The best solution I've found, besides gloves, are plush animal puppets that cover to about my wrist. When he was a baby it was the best, but now he's growing to about 11 pounds and the first puppets falling apart. He is good about not biting skin or bare hands after practice. This is why a puppet or plush works best as a distinct target. The more it covers too would help

So, any good, durable recommendations for hand puppets or an equivalent?

And I'm gonna wrestle with him either way. I raise rowdy boys.

Sometimes my cat will approach me for pets and then bite me

So, sometimes my cat will want pets from me to which I obviously ablige.

What's confusing though is after a couple seconds sometimes she'll do this meow/slight growl thing and bite me. Sometimes after this she wants me to continue to pet her but I surprsingly don't really want to.

Any reason to this? She's not a young cat either at 10 years old.

my bird died suddenly.

so pretty much it was an average Monday morning. i got up and woke up my cockatiel but i had noticed he was very quiet. i didn’t really think any thing of it and got on my computer to do work and then i noticed he was very limp. i figured he was tired and continued working when i noticed that he couldn’t fly, then i became worried. i was concerned but i didn’t think it was serious so, again, i kept working. then i saw him flopping over then getting back up. i got up from my desk and looked at him. i tried to get him to perch on my finger, but he couldn’t grip my finger. i then thought that he might died but at the same time i thought there was no way he could die, as he was healthy and young. he then couldn’t stand at all, then he started to move a bit more so i layed him down and then he opened up his wings looked around and died. i was very upset by this but also confused. as i said, he was healthy and young. does anyone know why he died?

I bought a kitten that was taken from his mum too young

Hi everyone, I just bought a kitten after months of trying to adopt a cat to no avail. Here in the UK it is very rare to find an indoor rescue cat (I don't have a garden but a catio) so after many rejections I finally caved abd bought one.

The breeder swears he is 8 weeks old and completely weaned, but the veterinarian I took him too said he's at the most 6 weeks and quite skinny for his age. He is litter trained and goes in the litter everytime, although you can tell sometimes he's a bit confused and you need to guide him to the tray.

He's currently on deworming medication and since I took him home he vomited a few times, I guess because of stress or because his body isn't so used to wet food yet. I am giving him the same food the breeder said he was having before.

During the day he doesn't seem interested in food, he'll sleep for around 2/3 hours then have half hour play time, running around and exploring the new place. Then back to sleep. He drinks water fine and wees fine, he had bad diarreah but I can see he's getting better.

During the night it's a different story. He'll wake me at around 3am crying for food. He'll eat two bites of his wet food then climb in my bed and start sniffing and kneading my head, looking for somewhere to nurse from. I have to put him back down in front of his plate of food, he'll have two bites of that then rinse and repeat a few times until he goes back to sleep.

It breaks me heart because you can tell he was taken from his mum too soon, probably even before I took him, but I have no intention of giving him back as he was not being looked after properly. As soon as I got him I had to take him to an emergency vet appointment. He couldn't poop because he had a ball of dried feces and hair stuck to his bum and it was extremely painful when he was straining to go.

I asked the vet if I should be bottle feeding him and she said there should be no need, but his nighttime behaviour makes me think maybe it would be best? I just want him to grow stronger and gain weight steadily.

Looking for the right pet

Since lockdown started I've been pretty lonely and have been thinking about getting a pet for some time, I am an university student who spends most of his time home, even past lockdown. Right now I live alone but might be getting roommates back sometime, so I'm looking mostly for a good pet to have in an apartment that isn't very high maintenance or loud. That considered I would also like to go on walks with my pet at least once a week or so. I've been thinking about either a cat or a cockatiel, but I'm open to suggestions, either way I intend to train it as to be a good companion and be comfortable with a harness.

My dog has been acting weird tonight and yesterday (read the description please)

I live in an apartment and he usually goes for a walk 2 or 3 times a day, no problem. The last 2 months I moved to a country house for the summer, its a house with a big garden. Everything was perfect because he actually got more space to play and run. But today and yesterday, at night and everyone getting to bed (he got a small bed and sleeps inside the house but the rest of the day he can go outside anytime he wants) I found him on my kitchen near the Door and first I thought that he maybe wants food, water or poop but he rejected the water and food so I open the Door so he can poop or maybe run a little bit on the garden but instead he runs straiht to the main door (that leads to the streets) and I follow him and he Just looks at the door and then to me like telling me to open the door but theres no way Im doing it so I carry him back to the house and he Just dont go to his bed, he Just sits In the corner and being kinda statict, after some minutes he goes back to his bed and sleeps. During the day he is totally normal, playing and running so I thought that it was a thing of Just one night but today happened the exact same thing.

Any thoughts? Do you guys think hes trying to escape or maybe just explore outside. He did have a lot of garden a space to play and is treated really good. There are other dogs in the house but their relationships are non existing they dont play together but they dont fight either. Ive been in this summer house for almost 2 months and hes acting like that since yesterday but only at nights.

Inappropriate cat urination for years - we have tried everything and there seems to be no hope left any more that things will get better. We are ill with stress, guilt and worry. Our home is misery for us and the cats.

(Note: Sorry in advance for the length of this. Thank you for reading).

Hi all.

Like many others here, I'm writing out of sheer desperation having reached a point where there just don't seem to be any solutions left any more. I don't even know what I want/expect anybody to be able to say to help us really, I think perhaps I just need to get this out.

In short, one of our two cats has a chronic inappropriate urination problem, and we're now at a stage after several years of trying to solve the issue, where everybody involved is extremely unhappy and unwell as a result.

We've had both cats since kittens from the same home, and (other than the normal chasing/play fighting) they've always got along well. They willingly sleep in the same bed together, so the issue isn't because of tension between the two.

Both cats are now 10 and a half years old and both Cat 1 (the urinating cat, male) and Cat 2 (female) are desexed since a young age.

Cat 1 first weed inappropriately when he was around 4 years old, when we had house guests over to stay for a couple of weeks. This seemed to be an isolated incident at the time.

We moved to a new home when the cats were around 6 years old, and the problem has continually escalated as time has gone on since then.

Over the years, the following areas/items have been targeted, and whenever we clean and/or block access to a 'chosen' area, a new one gets chosen:

  • Hardwood trapdoor in hall (now covered with mat and scratching post)
  • Random spots on floor/carpet in every room
  • Walls in most corners
  • Bath
  • Kitchen counter
  • The bin
  • Hair extensions
  • Laundry
  • Shoes
  • Shopping bags
  • Books/ DVDs
  • Our bed
  • Cat bed

There will definitely be more to the list but in general, the message is that nowhere is safe from pee.

We have tried everything we can think of both medically and environmentally to resolve the problem, and nothing has worked.

Medical:

  • Diagnosis of urine crystals a few years ago - this was treated with Cystaid and we have continued this ever since (on the advice of the vet) to prevent any recurrence.
  • Multiple subsequent urinalysis all clear.
  • Diagnosis of early kidney issues - extremely well managed with successful ongoing specialist renal diet (regular bloodwork confirms this).
  • Overgrooming - First treated as possible skin irritation by a specialist (just in case). The medication didn't resolve the issue so the specialist was confident that the issue is anxiety/behavioural.
  • Anxiety - Diagnosed as above. Over the years we have tried (again on the Vet's advice) Zylkene, Clomicalm, Prozac and I think one other medicine that I can't now recall. The vet has advised that there are no other medicines they can prescribe for us to try.

Environment:

We have tried all of the following:

  • Multiple beds (they still choose to sleep in the same one)
  • Multiple litter trays on different levels
  • Different types of litter
  • Different types of tray
  • Feliway (Two different types)
  • Separating the cats (makes Cat 1's anxiety worse)
  • Giving them freedom to roam the house (urine everywhere)
  • Restricting them to a small room upstairs to reduce anxiety/reduce chance of seeing a neighbourhood cat through the windows
  • Cleaning every urine-affected area multiple times with vinegar, citrus, bicarbonate of soda and enzymatic cleaners

Again, over the years we've probably tried many more things but this gives the general gist of how much we've been desperately trying help our cat get better.

In general, he is a very loving and very very sweet cat - with extreme separation anxiety as well as anxiety in general.

We are now in a situation where we've had to restrict the cats to the one room in an effort to minimise Cat 1's anxiety, as well as the urination. Unfortunately this makes him extremely unhappy too - although he seems to overgroom less in this room, his separation anxiety increases. He will howl and scratch at the door while we sleep until his paws are literally bleeding. It's absolutely heart breaking.

We can only now spend time with him in the other areas of the house if one of us is able to keep a literally constant eye on him. If we turn our backs for even 5 minutes, he will spray (the urination is marking behaviour, not elimination of a full bladder).

It's also not fair on Cat 2 at all - she is much more active and likes to roam, but Cat 1's anxiety without her around is too extreme. 2 days ago, we got them a new bed to sleep in as Cat 1 had weed on it.. and the next morning, the new bed was also wet with wee.

The situation is making us absolutely miserable, our house is unhygenic and we feel like prisoners, as well as feeling constantly guilty for restricting the cats to a small room.

The situation is even more complicated due to Cat 1's medication and special diet. Of course, Cat 2 can't have this, so we have to feed them both separately. Cat 1 doesn't like the taste of the medicine so will nurse his food for hours. We like to try and have as much time with him as possible when we can supervise his marking behaviours, to make up for having to be shut away in the room the rest of the time, however the moment we bring him into the front room with us, he will howl to go back up for his food. So we take him back up, give him some time to eat, and he will start howling to be let out. And the pattern repeats for the whole evening, every single day.

We just don't know what to do any more. Both us and the cats are miserable. We've tried every behavioural suggestion, every diet, supplement and medication the vets can offer. They have categorically told us there is nothing else they can try.

The only options we haven't tried that we can think of now are:

  1. Outdoor enclosure - This is a very anxious indoor cat and we live in the north of England which is very cold outdoors most of the year. We both believe this would be terrifying and abusive to the poor cat.

  2. Nappies - This is something I'd be willing to try but my other half believes that he will either just pull these off, or be miserable with stress from trying to get them off all day every day. If we are being honest with ourselves, we're not sure if this would give Cat 1 an acceptable quality of life due to how much stress we expect it would cause him.

  3. Experimental medicine - From my research, I know vets in other countries will try other medicines that the vets here aren't willing to prescribe. So it raises the question of whether we could find a way to import medicines and try treating Cat 1 ourselves behind the advice of the vet. This is possibly quite dangerous and could end up doing more harm than good.

  4. Rehoming - The thought is devastating, even more so because we can't see that anybody would be willing to take Cat 1 on, with the knowledge of all his medical and behavioural problems.

So we are left in a situation of perpetual guilt where we feel that due to the profound problems that Cat 1 has, the cats no longer have a suitable quality of life, meanwhile we are also constantly stressed to the point of absolute misery. I don't know how any of us can possibly manage perhaps another 10 years of this.

Please no cruel comments, we are genuine people who love our pets and are at complete breaking point on how we can continue living like this, with seemingly no acceptable solution in existence. I'm not sure anybody can help us at this point, but thank you for reading anyway if you got this far.

Introducing my cat to my roommates new puppy

Hi all, Some background- I have a cat who is 10 years old. My family adopted her when she was a kitten, but she has always been “my” cat. She is very shy and timid around people outside my family. However, my family dows have a bichon frise since before we adopted her and they have always gotten along. When I lived on my own when I was in college she came with me and adapted well because it was just the two of us. I have recently graduated college so I moved back home with the cat (she also adapted just fine being home again). I recently got a job and am planning on moving out and into an apartment with one of my good friends in the next few months. My friend has just gotten a shitzu (less than 1 yr old). I know my cat will eventually adapt to my new roommate after a while, I’m just nervous about the dog. The dog is the same size as the dog we have at home, so I’m hoping she won’t be scared. Also, she tries to play with our dog now but she is old and won’t reciprocate. Maybe she will enjoy playing around with the puppy? Any tips on how to introduce the two when we do move in together?

How do you make it easier for an animal when you have to leave them?

I'm in the middle of a messy divorce and had to take a place that doesn't allow animals, so our cat is staying behind with my ex in the house. I know he won't understand why I never came home. We bottle raised him, and though he prefers my ex, he still loves on me and waits for me when I'm not home. It's breaking my heart I can't bring him with me. Is there any way I can make it easier on him?

Perfect dog breed for me.

I have a Tibetan Spaniel, but I’m due to move out in a few years, so the precious family dog will no longer be seen. This same dog is 5, so she is nearing middle age, and she isn’t gonna be around forever.

I’m looking for an energetic, intelligent dog, something that will quickly catch onto tricks and training, and something that can keep up with my need to exercise and get out of the house.

Any recommendations?

Cat scared of one specific person.

So, my boyfriend and I got a got a few months ago. She is a sweet, playful one year old and a great cat all around. We also live with my boyfriends dad and she was fine around him and would go in his room but still preferred us as she was with us more. But, suddenly a couple months ago she’s scared of him and hisses at him sometimes and she doesn’t do that to anyone else. She will not enter his room and seems scared of it. But, whenever he has food she’ll crawl on his lap. Why is this? And is there anything we can do to help her not be scared of him. And I know we wouldn’t have hurt her or anything at least not on purpose. He loves her and spoils her but she’s afraid of him. Any thoughts?

Feeling really guilty about picking kitten out if bedroom at night

**locking

A week ago I adopted a kitten, ten weeks old. He's lovely and we've been getting along well but the nights are awful. He sleeps a lot throughout the day and gets really sleepy at around ten pm. At midnight/1am I play with him to tire him out for bedtime but all it does is give him zoomies. He's been going absolutely crazy and attacking my tapestry and any visible cables in my bedroom with a stoic single mindedness whenever I try to go to bed. So yesterday I decided to lock him out of my bedroom at night to finally get some sleep. He didn't protest, didn't mew (he usually does a lot, he's a Siam), didn't scratch. I only heard him when he demanded food in the morning.

Still I'm feeling very guilty. For now it's just the two of us living here and I'm scared of giving him anxiety or some sort of trauma. He's usually very attached to me.

a bald spot has suddenly appeared on my cats neck and looks like it was manually shaven

i noticed a small bald spot on my cats neck a few days ago but didn’t think much of it until my mum pointed it out to me today, and i realised it has gotten larger. it’s on his neck a little far off his ear and had fresh dried blood in the middle so i’m assuming there’s a cut. it looks like someone has pulled a chunk of his hair out since it’s to the skin.

he’s an outdoor cat (bengal) but hasn’t been going out so much these past few days. for most of it he’s been in my room sleeping on my bed which doesn’t happen too often. he’s not a clingy cat. i’ve seen 2 small chunks of hair on my blanket and he keeps on flicking his right ear which is the one above his bald spot. he’s also seems a little shook and out of it but it could be me overanalysing since i’m worried.

we’re going to take him to the vet on monday since it’s closed tomorrow and have decided not to let me outside tomorrow which i don’t think will be a big problem since when he goes out he comes back in pretty quick.

he also hasn’t been eating the meat from his cat food and only licking the sauce for the past, 2+ weeks?? he’s had a bit of boiled chicken and fish though, don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

Difficult relative and troubled multiple-pet household situation

Would love an opinion on a difficult relative and troubled, multiple-pet household situation. A relative of mine has a cat who I really love. A few years ago she added a dog to the house, who is very rambunctious and not trained. While they get along sometimes, the dog is always fighting with and intimidating the cat out of any joy (scaring him off every time he tries to play, stealing the two toys he owns, barking at him for sitting on the couch, etc). The relative just laughs it off and clearly favors the dog. She has no desire to train it to not harass the cat. It’s been really upsetting to watch the cat’s happiness and confidence drop, and his weight skyrocket over the years. He rarely gets play time (myself and other family members play with him when we visit) and he’s clearly obese, but again the owner laughs it all off. She swears he is not fat or unhappy, and refuses to start feeding him healthy food despite multiple people trying to change her mind. Well, this week she randomly bought a new kitten without even telling her husband. She didn’t do any proper or slow introductions between animals, of course. The dog seems fine but the cat is clearly upset, so much so that he’s vomiting. She’s once again swearing that it will be fine, saying the cat just needs to get used to the kitten. She won’t listen to anyone including her own husband telling her this is a terrible idea. It seems like there is just absolutely no getting through to her and that she has no ability to see each animal’s point of view or feelings. She is so dismissive of any concerns raised, genuinely thinks this is all fine, and that everyone else doesn’t know what they’re talking about. I know it could be worse like none of the pets are being starved or physically abused or anything thank god, but it still breaks my heart for the sad old cat. What would you do here? I’m torn between minding my business since I know fighting with her is pointless, and kidnapping the cat so it can start a new life lol (kidding but ugh 😞)

Getting very worried about my cat

8 year old very playful tabby had “rodent ulcers” starting back in November. A steroid helped get rid of them pretty quickly. Flash forward to December and they came back. No behavioral changes but more steroids knocked them out. To get to more of a root cause rather than try and have him on steroids too long, we decided for the vet to run some tests and try some other methods for permanent resolution. His kidney tests came back a little troubled but nothing too extreme according to the vet. He also started Atopica and a hypoallergenic food in mid January to see if those would help. His health has pretty severely declined since then. First he became very needy, like constantly on my lap every time I sat down. Then his appetite just completely dwindled. He hardly eats, even when I try and give him his old food. He’s lost about 2 lbs in the last month. He’s become weak, frail, and lethargic. He’s also been shedding more than usual. He has a vet appointment tomorrow but I’m really anxious for bad news. This guy has been the only one I’ve had at times. He had never had even a minor health complication his entire life up until November. Can anyone reassure me this is just a side effect of Atopica or something?

Mud Scorpion Turtle

I just got a mud scorpion turtle over 2 weeks ago and the tank is already really dirty. Rocks became dark green. I feed my turtle 4 turtle ball shaped pellets. The last turtle I had was a red ear slider turtle and she was about 6 inches. I fed her more turtle pellets than I do with this one but the tank became dirty less quickly (I sold her because she was big for my tank). With my last turtle the rock wasn’t coated in green stuff, now it is. Why and how is my mud scorpion turtle soiling the tank so fast?

I'm forced to get rid of my cat, what do I do?

We've had our cat 8 years and it's gotten to the point where we're now forced to get rid of it.

I live at home with my parent's and there is nothing else I can do to try to keep the cat. It has to go, very soon.

We got the cat when he was around 2 years old, and he was absolutely perfect for 5+ years.

Randomly one day he stopped using hit cat box. Peeing on the couch, our clothes, the closet, on people, on guests, on everything.

He began excessively scratching furniture and pooping in every spot in the house.

We brought him to the vet as soon as we noticed this trend begin, nothing wrong with him, we're told he's very healthy and to try other solutions.

We've tried - Changing Cat liters (Dozens of times)

Changing food (Dozens of times)

Added extra litter boxes around the house

Moved his litter boxes to new locations

Moved his food in new places

Stopping letting him go outside

Tried letting him go outside more

Re-training him to use the litter box, by giving him an entire room in our house.

We've tried different cleaning supplies

We've tried putting fabric in his litter boxes

We tried medicine a very prescribed

He doesn't have fleas and we use vet recommended flea medicine

Dozens of different recommended products among many other things

During this time, we have not been mean or harmful to him in anyway

He's had times where it seems like he might've stopped for a week or so, and we make sure to keep track of what foods/litter/etc we're using. But then he starts doing it again.

Recently he's started doing it constantly, and hasn't even used his litter box a single time in days.

My family has been cat and pet owners for 40+ years and our animals live long happy healthy lives, this has never happened before.

We're thousands and thousands of dollars into solutions and we can't afford it, we've had to throw out dozens and dozens of items that we can't get the cat pee smell out of.

We can't have guests over, our furniture is ruined and we don't know what else to do.

During this time, our cat is not one bit mean or aggressive, and still extremely friendly, he doesn't show any signs of pain, meowing, discomfort and the places he chooses to pee/poop aren't secluded to one area, he will go anything and everywhere.

What can be done in this case scenario?

We have a male kitten named Scooby (neutered male) and he happens to be 9 months old now. We have a big house and he is free to rome around everywhere in the house never restricted him. But since yesterday he has been climbing the boundary walls of the house and trying to escape into someone elses house. Today he was nowhere to be found in our house and after searching a lot we found him sitting in the some neighbours kitchen garden. If he continues like this we will loose him for good. I am not sure what is happening to my old cat

I have two cats, one I got 2 years ago (m), and a new (m) cat which we got a few weeks ago. They seem to get along. My old cat keeps licking my new cat, and he lets him. Then they fight a little after the groom which I think had to do with too much groom so the new cat got annoyed.

There is something he does which I think is odd, so when I had to chase my new cat to give him medicine - my new cat came from a hoarding situation and he hates being held- my old cat ran too but he hits my new cat, and the new cat lowers down his head. I thought they were getting along because my new cat will sometimes stand up against my old cat and fight back.

I am thinking there is a bullying situation, but I saw my new cat that he can stand up against him, it happens when I had to chase my new cat.

Sorry, if I made no sense, I wrote too fast.

About cat food. How long will 1kg of cat food last?

Hello! I have a kitten name, Mollie. A friend of mine said she's about 3-4 months old and I'm thinking of buying her cat food, for the first time. It's gonna be a month since she was given to us, but I haven't feed her proper foods yet. I'm not a bad owner, however, I'm just a student that doesn't have enough money to buy cat food! But I now have enough money to buy her dry food, and if I have enough money in the future, I'll probably also buy her wet food! :D

How do I help my cats get along?

I saved two cats from the pound this past week and I've never introduced two cats before, so I'm taking the advice of Jackson Galaxy and trying to do it gradually. They're both males, recently nuetered and likely young adults. The staff said they had met in holding and were fine back then, but here at home they are far from friends and I'm worrying sick about having to keep them cooped up.

We're keeping them in separate rooms right now and alternating who gets to be out with full roam of the house. We've got a Feliway, window perches, treats, toys etc but it still means that one cat is having to just be put away for 4-6 hours at a time. Their rooms have a litter box, toys, cat trees, chairs, blankets the works but they still meow pitifully when we leave. I can't be two places at once, I just also feel terrible for their possible boredom. Is there anything else I can do? I love them both dearly already and just want them to not fight. We've gotten to the eating on opposite sides of a baby gate without issue stage but once the food is gone, the hissing starts. We've only had one cat fight, caused by a sneaky infiltrator kitty but no one was hurt and we broke it up quickly.

Tips for dealing with a torn ACL?

The vet suspects my dog has torn his ACL, and is having a hard time getting an x-ray from him as he won't hold still and I'm not allowed in to help calm him down. She would like to get an x-ray soon, when he's under getting a very chipped tooth pulled, but the next available appointment for teeth stuff is mid April. I emailed asking her if there are any other ways we could calm him down enough for an x-ray and am also on a cancel list (if someone else cancels we get their spot), however I obviously do not enjoy seeing my sweet baby boy in pain and am wondering if anyone can recommend any good leg braces, tips, anything like that?

Currently he is taking supplements the vet suggested (cosequin and high omega fish oil) as well as an anti-inflammatory they have prescribed, we have also cut walking time down considerably (2+ miles a day to maybe 1/2 mile, maybe a longer walk once a week no more than a mile). He'll be six in June and he is a pit/husky mix, so holding still is difficult but we are trying to keep him calm and laying down as much as possible.

Intact Male Cat Driving Me Crazy

So, during the recent storms a couple weeks ago, I took in a stray male I had been feeding.

He is a sweet cat with humans for the most part (see below), and seems to want to befriend my two (fixed) female cats, but he also randomly attacks them. He is probably around 11 months and much bigger than them, even though they are 2-3 years old.

I have been keeping them separated because I will be eventually sending him on a trial basis to live with my friend, who has the space and time for him. For now, I live far from her and am waiting until about two weeks after he gets neutered to make the transition.

My vet has been backed up and can't take him gor neutering until the 3rd.

Everyday it seems like his behavior gets worse. He excessively howls all day, but specifically around 3a-6a (peak play time?). He has scratched up my carpet to the room he is in pretty badly at the doorframe. I have softcaps on him, but he keeps getting 1-2 off at a time and immediately resumes scratching. He has begun to have random fits of aggression towards me with biting, though he is generally affectionate and kind. Last night, he even started spraying. I feel like I'm going crazy trying to take care of him, my two other cats, and my other job and life responsibilities. It doesn't help I haven't had a full night's sleep in over a week.

What I have tried/am currently using:

  • Wearing him out with play. Only delays the behavior from 3-5a to 5a-7a

-Feliway spray for about a week now. I'm not sure if it is working.

-I put my two girls away and let him roam the home with me for a good chunk of the day. Has made no difference.

-Melatonin treats. Helps a little, but again only delays the behavior.

-Soothing, petting him and leaving after he is calm. Inconsistent results.

-Rotating toys available. Food and water available. No help.

It's 5 more days, but I am going a little crazy here waiting and don't know what to do to allow myself and him a peaceful night. Any advice would be nice.

My cat and I are moving in with my boyfriend, his roommate, and his dog. Any tips?

Adopted my cat almost a year ago, she’s the type where she is ok with her own space and she’ll let you know when she’s wanting to be pet or any company. Their dog is a very sweet girl, we joke about how she was raised by a cat because she doesn’t act like a normal dog, and since she’s been around cats before I’m not too worried about her, it’s my cat I’m worried about. I would feel so bad if my cat clawed or hissed at her. Any ideas on how I can get my cat and their dog to meet each other (before moving in) in a safe way? My idea was maybe keep the dog in her kennel and let my cat sniff her in a comfortable setting?

My cat's... weird in the mornings

I don't know why, but almost exclusively in the mornings, before and at dawn for some reason, she will follow me around, constantly purring and regularly licking things. Is this normal? Is there an explanation for what she's doing? BTW, she's I think around five years old, I'm not sure, it's my parents' cat.

Cat won't leave under bed after move?

This is my second move with my cat. I moved in with my boyfriend this week and I expected a transition period. The last move it took my cat kyle about 4 days to really start coming out. I'm coming up on day 4.

We have a bed where the underneath has enough clearance for my cat to walk around or sit up. Every time I go to check on him, he hasn't eaten or drank. I put his bowls underneath the bed for a bit because I was concerned. Ive since moved it just out of reach of the bed so he can explore.

What I'm most concerned about is he keeps having accidents underneath the bed. I have a litter box in the room a few feet from the bed, and even took a bit of litter into my fingers and put up to his nose so he can smell it. He's peed twice underneath there, once on a backpack and once on my t-shirt I put there so he could smell something familiar.

Every time he pokes his head from the bed, he's afraid of the new surroundings and runs back underneath. Which I get. There's a dog in the house, but he is non-reactive luckily. They haven't met yet, because Kyle is definitely scared of the dog. But they both know the other exists

I'm just afraid he's getting kinda used to living underneath there? Every time I pet him, he purrs. He's even gotten kinda playful. He's stressed, he will make a sad cry meow from time to time. He paces around down there, like a lion in a cage. His fur feels fine, but his nose is dry. He's usually a demanding eater, but he's too afraid to eat.

I know it takes time for cats to adjust to a move. He's just under 3 years old and I've had him since he was a kitten. I just don't know when I should start getting concerned.

Any advice would really help right now.

Rehoming my Father-in-law's dog

My partner and I are buying a home, which means we can finally get a dog. We were going to adopt a rescue, but we've been dogsitting my Father in law's 5 year old Cocker Spaniel here and there for the last couple of months, so my partner asked if we could just have his dog, since he's previously made comments about how difficult it is to take care of him in his older age. He's agreed, and it looks like we're going to be taking the pup in September. The dog has known my partner since he was a tiny puppy, and me since he was about 1 or so, so he's very comfortable and familiar with us already. But I know moving him from one home to the next is very different to just dogsitting him for a few days: so how do we make this transition easy and stress-free for him? He's pretty clingy and we don't want him to get upset when he realises he's not going back to his old home. We've already discussed having him stay with us temporarily a few times before the move to get used to the environment, and making sure my partner's family come visit him often. Is there anything else we can do to make sure he's happy and doesn't feel abandoned?
tl;dr: we're rehoming my father in law's dog and want to make sure he's comfortable and not anxious being in a new situation

New cat likes other family members more than me

Hi everyone! I recently adopted a 3 month old kitten for our home. For context, I'm living at home with my parents along with my sister. I was the one who really searched for the cat, and brought him home last Saturday, set up all his stuff, and since then I've been the one solely filling his food/water bowls, cleaning his litter box, cutting his nails, and putting him to sleep at night (he mainly stays in my room since it's the biggest). For the first day and a half he expectedly was very timid and reluctant to be around any of us, but eventually he started coming around and is comfortable with everyone. However, I've noticed that for some reason he's still not as comfortable with me as he is around everyone else, espicially my sister. For instance whenever my room door is open he bolts to hers and loves to sit on her bed. Meanwhile if I put him on mine he'll shortly get off. If he's in the living room and I come near him to show some love, he'll dodge it and hide under the couch. In general it just seems like he doesn't like me or is afraid of me. I understand that it's barely been a week and they take time to adjust, but it's just frustrating and honestly heartbreaking to see him showing more love to everyone else as opposed to me, espicially since I'm the one who is literally doing all the work for him. Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated :)

Tl;dr: new kitten likes other family members more than me, even though he stays in my room and I take care of all his needs (food, water, litter box, etc.)

Edit: I probably should add that I'm a first time pet owner outside of a couple fish

My dog swallowed a sock, is it a vet emergency?

I’d say he’s a medium sized dog, maybe 45lbs pit mix if that helps. He swallowed a thin ankle sock, could he be big enough for it to pass? Should we wait and see if he throws it up/poops it out for a day or two, if he’s fine otherwise, or should we go straight to the vet in the morning?

Anyone with experience in a similar situation?

Question about a kitten that can be aggressive

In august 2020 we got a kitten, adopted from a place where it was kept in the basement and apparently didn’t hang out with the other kittens, was “impossible to catch.” She was the smallest.

We already had a cat, 3-4 years old we adopted in April 2020. She is a great respectable cat, was clearly trained well and isn’t rough at all to people. We got her because we had mice that eventually went away with her help. She’s very nice and chill but not the friendliest cat and I think hasn’t lived with other cats.

At first they didn’t get along but with time it’s gotten better, sometimes they even get quite close and groom each other. However, what I’m worried about is the kitten sometimes can be overly rough with the bigger cat, she goes for her throat and latches on hard and things will often get out of hand. I’m wondering if this is just typical kitten behaviors or something we should be dealing with before it gets worse? She’s also getting spayed March 1st. Any help or resources are greatly appreciated :)

My cat was diagnosed with cancer today.

My cat was diagnosed with large cell gastrointestinal lymphoma today.

I got him and his brother 10 years ago. They were abandoned in a cardboard box with the rest of their siblings. My friend found them, and offered us to take one home. My mom picked them because they were the only two white ones in a litter of brown tabbies. They both stole my heart.

The vet said at most he has one month left. I feel so broken.

Desperately need an advice. Multiple cats eventually were put in one room after damaging furniture (parents house)

Hear me out please, we have a lot of cats and after a while my mother got frustrated with all the damage they cause in the house so she decided to built them a room upstairs. They get the essentials like food, water and litter changed daily but there’s not a lot of human contact anymore as most of my family members are irresponsible and don’t wanna bother spending time inside that cat room. I had this discussion with my mom many times and she refuses to have them roam in the house again, and they all wouldn’t agree to have them rehomed even though they’re practically ignoring their existence at this point. I don’t have the power alone to be making decisions and Its not my house either! I’m willing to spend a lot of money to catify the room but I can see them always trying to get out and hang out around me because they hate being trapped and they all grew up around us as well. I’m feeling hopeless I think about this everyday and I only want the best for them..

Please help with any advice you have I’m lost!

My kitten inhaled litter dust

Hi all,

Looking for some advice and hopefully peace of mind!

My kitten (4 months) accidentally inhaled some litter dust (catsan non clumping mineral litter) while i was changing out the tray and i'm slightly worried because she coughed a bit after. I put her in another room but my partner unkowingly opened the door. Before i knew it she was right beside the tray in a flash, and although the litter says there is very little dust, there was a considerable ammount generated while i was pouring the litter in and she inhaled a little from the air. I might be over reacting if so i apologise but I adore her and hate to think it may have damaged her little respiratory system. She seems fine now (playing, eating etc) but i cant stop worrying. The litter is supposedley made from all natural materials according to the specifications but is that enough for it to just filter out of her with no problems?

If anyone has any advice I would so appreciate it!

Having trouble with my brycelet

Hey reddit. Recently I adopted a brycelet from a rescue shelter. They had found it abandoned on the side of the road and understandably it was scared out of its mind. Sadly, it continues to be very skittish and apprehensive toward me. How can I gain its trust and begin training it? Does anyone have experience with bryces? Thanks.

Older cat terrified of young cat in heat.

Luna is 4 and is spayed, nyx has just turned 1 and hasn't been spayed yet. Both female cats incase I got spayed and neutered mixed up. Nyx has just started gurgling and yowling and presenting her little butt to my fiance, so we're assuming she's in heat now. Never heard her making noise like this before. Luna and Nyx have little playfights often and Luna has always been a bit wary of her since we vrought her home, but since Nyx has started making these noisez Luna has become really aggressive and frightened. We're going to book Nyx in to be spayed but what can we do until then? Is this normal behaviour? I just want to comfort both cats and I can't even have them in the same room currently.

Not sure about what to feed my kitten

Hey, so next week I'm going to adopt the sweetest Tuxedo kitten, she is 4 weeks old.

Her current foster carer fed her Friskies Surfin Turfin etc, and she said she liked it.

I've searched the internet and noticed people say it's a pretty bad quality.

I'm a bit confused - what's considered good quality food in terms of ingredients? What's the recommended percentage of protein in the food(30-40%?)

Also, I've noticed people saying wet food might be better than dry, but I'm not sure I can afford it exclusively.

Any help will be appreciated :)

4 weeks after PU surgery in cat, any advice for a worried owner?

To start this off, yes I already called the vet and am waiting for a call back, but I feel like I am constantly whiplashing between being ok and going insane thinking something is wrong with him, and this has been a constant feeling since he got his surgery. Mostly what I want from this thread is just some discussion, especially from those who have had this surgery done to their cats before and can offer any advice or comfort from the owners perspective. Any input is appreciated, though I won't be doing anything suggested here unless ok'd by the vet.

So my boy's been doing ok since his surgery, he's been peeing but its between a rare good stream and a constant flow of drips, and a lot of litter box visits. The vet said that this would prevent him from blocking again, which his original blockage was an emergency situation (hence the surgery) but due to grit and not crystals, but he going from peeing ok one day to dripping the next and then fine again and I can't figure out if its due to the medication dosage or if its something to be concerned about.

Earlier this week he had a good constant drip of urine, even making good sized puddles of pee, and yesterday and today he's just been sort of....dripping, not a lot at once, and a lot of litterbox visits. He DID just go down to one dose of prazosin TODAY (rather than the two doses) so I don't necessarily think its due to meds, but if you have similar experiences with this, any input is appreciated. He's been on two doses of gabapentin a day now for about a week, (rather than the original 3 times a day he was prescribed) and he actually had to go this recent weekend without it due to a prescription fill delay (though was on it again on monday).

I had called the vet tonight but they haven't gotten back to me yet and I feel like I am overcalling them, though I just don't have any experience with a pet going through such a major and like....emergency type surgery before.

Anyway, to those of you who have dealt with this, either recently or not, please share your experiences, especially if they sound similar to this. Thanks in advanced, and to anyone who finds this due to trying to ease your own worry, I hope you find what you're looking for here <3
