my cat seems to have recurring UTIs. while i know this needs to be addressed (it already has been brought up but my vet insists that she’s fine), i just want to give her some relief so she can make it through the night until i can get to the vet tomorrow. we have an emergency vet in town but they charge an enormous amount of money and have never really done much for her. there is no blood in her urine, but she’s walking around the apartment yowling and peeing very small amounts :( i just want to help her feel better. i already have her morphine that was given to me by the emergency vet (i saved it just in case). is there anything i can give her that would be similar to AZO - to help with the urgency and need to urinate?
Apparently when we let him on to our porch on Sunday morning, there was a subtle crack in the door leading to the outside. He has been missing without a trace. Behind my house are some woods for about 50 yds and a railroad track after that. After the railroad tracks it is just dense woods for over a mile. There are houses on either side of ours the entire length of the street (several miles) and on the opposite side as well. We have put up flyers around a 0.5 mile radius extending from our home. We have searched the woods we could access, calling his name and shaking cat treats both day and late evening. We left the door to the porch open in case he comes back unexpectedly. And today we put out cat litter and blankets he’s slept on in our yard. Neighbors have called and said they’ve seen a cat, but it hasn’t been ours. Though there’s no evidence for it, I think he maybe dead. With the weather warming, the snakes are coming out in the woods, and I’m sure coyotes and other birds of prey live in there as well. Any words of wisdom or encouragement would be greatly appreciated.
Hello,
So last night me and my girlfriends dog, a 5 year old terrier, was acting very strange and shy. Throughout the night she started crying and whimpering and then couldn’t move her back legs and was dragging them around. We immediately took her to the vet and they diagnosed her with a ruptured disc in her back after xrays and a CT scan. They performed the surgery a few hours after and now she’s recovering at the vet hospital for the next couple days. I have a couple questions, they said it’s about 85-90ish percent chances she’ll walk and be okay again. But will she ever be able to run and jump around again and be almost 100%? She loves playing fetch and hiking, and swimming obviously she won’t be the same but will she be even close to the same again? Should we complete eliminate her from jumping up onto the bed and off for the rest of her life or just for the first couple months? If anyone has experience with this please let me know! I just want so bad for her to be able to run around and play again
For as long as I can remember I always wanted a cat so I had no problem when our family friends moved in with us with their two cats. I’ve hung out at their place when we lived separate and had no issues with their cats, the female was very shy but playful, it was a honor if she let you pet her. The male is a laidback old fart that lives like a house decoration, he finds a spot and sleeps there for hours until he decides it’s time to groom himself. It’s been about 7 months since we all started living together and the female cat has started creeping me out to the point I don’t ever think I’ll own a cat now. She’ll randomly hid in the upper kitchen cabinets and jump scare me, she claws at walls every now and again but usually at night, when you get up in the middle of the night sometimes she’ll be sitting at the end of the hallway with her squinty displeased look and just stare. I think the worst though is when I can hear her on the baby monitor at night. Again clawing at the walls or putting her claws in the play foam floor mat at 2am if I forget to close that door. She didn’t alway creep me out, the feelings started shortly after our roommates told us to no longer let her on the table. it just almost feels like she senses the anxiety and enjoys causing it. Anyone else have something similar? It’s just the female cat I have no issues with the male he doesn’t give me the heebie-jeebies at all but my heart jumps out of my chest every single time she’s in the cabinet.
My dog (16 years old, Jack Russell x Fox Terrier) was lying on her cushion and suddenly jumped up, but it looked like she couldn't move. She was in a squatting position and when she moved from her cushion she was staggering around and squatted again. Turns out she peed both times. Since then she's been needing to go down to the garden a lot and has been busy for an extended period of time. She's never shown this sort of incontinence before.
She's now struggling to climb stairs and is still staggering around and seems very disoriented. She also just stands there as though her back legs have seized up. She's also shivering. She struggled to bend her head down to eat and we had to lift the bowl to her mouth and she then ate without a problem.
It should be noted that she has a tumour in her bladder and her kidneys are failing (she was too old to operate on when she was diagnosed).
Anyone who has extensive kitten experience, one of our two new additions is very timid and shy. Extremely scared of your hand being reached out toward him to offer a sniff or pet. If you catch him from behind and he doesn't see the hand he is more accepting of it, and seems to arch his back a little with your scratching movement "the cat butt wrench" type of thing and appears it feels good. But he is not nearly as sociable or outgoing as the other. He would not come out for at least fifteen minutes when we got home. He is just over a week younger than the other. They seem to get along great. He is eating and drinking just fine. He seems maybe a tad underdeveloped for his age but maybe not. He is 9 weeks and the other is 10 weeks. His meow is very sheep sounding and has like a throaty ehh ehh ehh noise to it almost as if he is straining or it is hard for him to push it out. It is weak and skippy sounding. I finally got him to purr earlier when he was half asleep and allowed me to stroke him several times and gently caress under the chin. This was the first I heard a purr. It was so quiet it was almost inaudible. It also had that strange sheep skipping straining sound to it but is VERY quiet. He is definitely the MUCH more fearful of the two. The other is very lovey and seemingly well socialized. The other thing is, we were told he was born out of a litter of five or so and was the only one surviving, and that the Mother might be older with some type of issues due to climbing up on retiring age, and maybe have had previous birthing issues and will be her last litter. Wondering is this is some PTSD or improper socialization or even medical condition, maybe was not nourished well enough before weaning, not sure. If this is purely behavioral I will be so thankful. They did just come off a four hour plus flight to get here. Came from a breeder. This is very young to be showing such fearfulness it seems.. I am so hoping it is not some hereditary issue that is passed on from genes and a condition waiting to happen.. :( Any help is much appreciated, thanks!
My Maine Coon passed away about twoish months ago extremely unexpectedly. It has been incredibly hard on me, we were really close, really best friends. He followed me everywhere obsessively and I even have a video of me crying and him running over and wiping my tears with his paw. It was a very special bond. I miss him immensely. My boyfriend just told me he’s getting me a Ragdoll kitten for my birthday. He’s a gorgeous kitten and I know I’ll love him, but I keep crying over my cat who passed. I’m worried about feeling like I’m replacing him or having high expectations for the personality of the new kitten. But I don’t want the kitten to feel any of my anxiety because I’ve read Ragdolls are very emotionally intelligent. Does anyone have any advice for moving forward with a new kitten after losing such a special bond and friend? Sorry for any rambling.
Hi all have you tried the Nina Ottosson Challenges with your Furiend??
I just did with my doggo and while she was frustrated she seemed to enjoy it a lot! haha
Check it out!!
If you have the puzzle time your pet and post on here!!
I am sewing a cat nip toy for my cat. Are there any tricks I could use to have her help me choose the fabric?
Before I get into it, I want to give two caveats.
My city is in shut down and google suggests that even emergency vets might not be open. My brother in law is a vet so if this a vet thing, he is pretty easily available by phone. I am happy to lean into that.
My dog is allergic/intolerant to SO MANY things. I had her more than 8 months before she grew fur because even fancy limited ingredient food made her have diarrhea and lose fur and more. I have a lot of experience with her eating something that creates these symptoms and am following the guidelines the vet gave me I am just anxious because they are completely closed and I cannot even call for advice.
*
Around 24hours ago my dog (7-8, Lhasa Apso mix, arthritis and multiple allergies/intolerances) started having a mix of diarrhea and vomiting. I gave her a not-bully stick on Sunday and attributed it to that, as ingredients aren’t labeled and I am dumb.
This continued through the night, with her waking me at 2:30 and 5:30 for another round. We had our morning walk and she is alert, happy, and playful, but still has diarrhea.
Around 11 am with no repeats, my roommate agreed to watch her while I took a nap. I woke around 2:30pm and made a grocery run (we have designated me as fetcher of food during the pandemic). During this time my pup coughed up phlegm but this is normal given time or year and seasonal allergies.
Took her on her normal evening walk and all was good, even with soft (not liquid) poo. Upon returning home she spent a good deal of time trying to get food and treats and I had to take away her bone. (Vet advice is to give plenty of water and no food when these happen. Tomorrow I can start with rice and pumpkin. If tolerated a half portion of food Thursday and full Friday. This has always worked.)
About two hour after her evening walk she started whimpering so I brought her to the bath. (I have always lived in apartments and rarely on the first floor. I trained her young that when she has these incidences she can go in the shower. I can clean and sanitize it and keep tools on hand. Even with effort, a diarrhea day is typical every two to three months. Vet knows.) She had diarrhea again.
She hasn’t vomited since last night but the diarrhea worries me. Normally it stops by the next afternoon.
She is quieter than usually but still eager to see people, whined when I wouldn’t let her play with other dogs on her walk, and is performing for treats as well as being highly affectionate with me and my roommates. She is also drinking plenty of water and I discovered where she hid some treats. Her belly is normal and not tender and she is still jumping around and super eager for walks.
I have PTSD which makes me hyperviligant and anxious especially around death/losing her. My logic side says if she is still happy and alert and hungry, the signs the vet told me to watch, this is just another of the same issue she has had since she was a puppy and I’m an idiot for giving her an unlabeled treat. My emotional side, already on alert from the pandemic, says this is a complete crisis and I need to cross state lines to find a vet.
Please give your opinion to a panicked dog dad in a shut down city.
I am trying to adopt a rabbit from a shelter near by. I was sent an application which I expected, however the questions on it are highly specific and I’m just worried about saying something that would be considered a red flag.
I work full time and am living at home with my parents & am 24 years old (f). I am concerned that alone will be an issue since I don’t technically own a home or technically have a landlord.
Can anyone share some advice with me on what notable red flags would be on an application like this?
So, I'm a student who lives with my family in a pretty big city, and our apartment is pretty small. We already have a dog, but I've thought about getting a pet of my own. Our house is kinda crowded, and our dog isn't used to other animals, so getting a cat or another dog would be impossible. What pets should I consider adopting? I can't have a bird, and I've thought about a type of fish or a reptile. Please give me suggestions!
Please let me know if there’s a better sub to ask this in!
We rescued two boy kittens today (owner needed to give them up ASAP). They were born on 1/28 so they’re exactly 9 weeks old. We are first time cat owners. They’re very playful and fun! I have a few questions...
1) The vets near me are only open for emergency visits. I know kittens are supposed to get shots at 8 and 12 weeks... they currently have never been to a vet before and they’ll likely be over 12 weeks by the time our vet reopens. Is this bad? Are there any things I should be looking out for? 2) Their nails hurt. What age do they usually learn to retract their claws? 3) We’ve had them for about six hours and they haven’t ate or drank anything. I know they’re supposed to eat 3/4 times a day so is this normal? They seem well adjusted and have been jumping/playing within 10 min of bringing them home. 4) is it better to let them roam during the night or keep them together in a small room for their first few nights? I’m fine with them roaming but I don’t want it to be overwhelming for them.
Thank you!! I’d also appreciate any general kitty advice if you have any :) stay safe!
Ok so my bird started to having a seizure and i am not sure what to do do i let it die peacefully or what??
👋 Hi. This is my first time posting on Reddit. I need some advice but to be honest this is probably just a lost cause and I'm just gunna end up venting. Please, no judgement or insults. I'm asking for help.
My boyfriend and I have been together for about a year. He got his dog (as a puppy) a couple months before we started dating. The dog is a viszla/boxer mix. So he's a pretty big dog. Now, when we first started dating the dog was BAD. Like really bad. Was it typical puppy behavior? I don't really know. I've had dogs my whole life but not puppies. And all the dogs I've shared a household with were really good, well mannered dogs. My mom is great with animals and always put a lot of time and effort in to training them. Anyway, in the beginning BF's dog would be put in the other room with the door shut when we would have sex, because the dog would try to jump up on the bed, or lick our feet. He didn't like that, so he would shit or piss in the other room, knowing that he's only supposed to do that outside. (I knew that he knew cuz when BF would go out there the dog would put his head down in shame) That was the first thing that threw me off about this dog, other than the dog jumping all over my car when I'd pull up, thankfully I drove an '07 at the time so it wasn't a big deal. He also was doing this thing where he'd jump up and steal food off of counters, tables and dig through the trash and make a huge mess. That doesn't happen anymore, thankfully, but We couldn't even go to the store for 5 mins without the dog fucking up the house. The dog has serious codependency issues. If we order food, and my BF goes outside for two seconds to get the food the dog starts yipping and howling like someone's beating him. And I'm not exaggerating. It literally sounds like someone's beating him. The first time I heard it I ran downstairs cuz I didn't know wtf was going on I thought he was hurt. When he's in the car with us and BF goes in the store he's incessantly whining. I've tried to coddle him tell him "it's ok" Give him a treat, pet him, but I gave up on that cuz I started feeling like I was enabling him. The dog always shoves other dogs out of the way when someone's petting the other dog. When I go to visit my mom I can't even say hi to her German shepherd without the dog running over and butting his way in, my moms GSD even gets fed up with his shit. The dog is not fixed. Yet. I told BF a few months back that I don't want him on the bed anymore. 1, because I've had to wipe shit off of his ass numerous times. 2, because he dragged this disgusting green smegma across my back seat when I took him out with me to run errands one day and I had to hang up the phone with my dad, get out of my car and puke and then wipe it off his penis and my backseat. (He never licks his genitals when it actually counts -_-) And 3, because the bed is too small and if we sleep with him in the bed I wake up sweating and wedged against the wall. The smegma thing also happened numerous times but the time in my car was the final straw. There was so much of it. It was disgusting. And BF thinks I'm an evil witch for this. The dog follows him all around the house. Whines when BF even gets in the shower. Dog harasses people for food. Although he knows not to do that with me anymore, because I'm the only one who's consistent with discipline. But BF let's the dog sit by his hip while everyone's at the table eating and stare at them. Not ok. With all that other annoying shit aside, my biggest concern is the jumping. Also the codependency but we'll get to that in a second. He jumps on people all the time. BF let's him do it while he's playing with him and he shoves the dog down and the dog keeps going because BF let's him think that's how you play. I'm 8 months pregnant. The dog tries to jump on me all the time when I get to the house. I always shove him down and hold him down on the floor and tell him NO. BF tells him no too but what does it mean to the dog when that's how BF plays with him? The dog knocked over someone's baby shortly after we started dating but like I said the dog was a total nightmare in the beginning. I don't know if the dog knows better now. I know my baby's safe in my belly but what about when she's here? What if hes being rambunctious (he has too much energy and no one tells him to cut the shit when he's acting like that indoors) and he jumps up and lands on my baby and breaks one of her ribs or scratches her eye? Or knocks over her bassinet? I've been telling BF for a long time to get the dog neutered because my mom told me he'll start to calm down but BF just didn't give a shit and now with this COVID19 shit going on I don't even know if we can find a vet to do it now. As far as I know only emergency vets are open and they don't neuter, I called and asked. I feel like my dad is the only person whose been taking my concerns seriously. Dad told me he had to give away his dog Zeke shortly after I was born (german shepherd/chow/pitbull mix) because he turned wicked aggressive all of a sudden and started doing shit like growling at me and my mom. My dad loved that dog to pieces but knew what had to be done. Also, Zeke wasn't fixed- I found out recently that the beagle who bit a piece out of my lip when I was 11 years old wasn't fixed either. Is it true that male dogs who don't get neutered are more prone to be aggressive later on? And this is where the codependency ties in- I'm really worried the dog might become jealous of the baby and intentionally hurt her. I don't know what to do, besides not leave the baby around the dog unsupervised but I don't think I can trust BF or his mom to do the same cuz like I said my dad is the only person who is taking my concerns seriously. And yes, the dog is walked 2-3 times a day and BF spends a lot of time outside with him playing fetch and he gets to visit his Rottweiler cousin and my mom's German Shepherd and play with them regularly. Sorry for the long rant I just don't know what to do
Apparently while I was at work my SO let the dogs out in our fenced in yard as usual and the little one got out through an undiscovered hole in the fence. I immediately rushed home and as I entered the neighborhood saw an older woman following my dog in a kind of protective stance- like she was trying to keep her from running into the street. I pulled over and almost started crying I was so grateful to her. She said she’s a dog owner too and thought my girl looked too well taken of to be a stray. I know she’s retired and lives around the corner from me. I want to get her a thank you gift and/or maybe even a gift card but not sure how much is appropriate. I want to be mindful of possible dietary restrictions.
The cats name is winter, I think she's about 5ish(?) Very pretty cat, but apparently was a feral cat my mom sorta just baited into the house and domesticated several years ago. I knew immediately she wasn't the calmest cat in the world since she hides from strangers, like to claw at clothed furniture, growls when she hears someone but can't physically see them and other traits like that, but for the most part she's really warmed up to me to the point it hurts.
She's now attention CRAZY, she follows me around the house everywhere, waits outside my door, constantly brushing up against me while I walk, jumps onto any counters or tables near me and meows show tunes whenever she sees me, which is fine and dandy, I love that about her.
What I DON'T love is how every time I try to pet, touch or hold her she freaks the f*** out. Most cats I've met will just lay there and get petted, but not winter, she throws her ENTIRE BODY into you when you pet here. It's seriously a mini workout trying to support her and pet her, which is again fine and manageable, up until she randomly latches onto your arm like a vice grip from hell and bites down on any part of you she can get to with the bite force of an American saltwater crocodile. Seriously, my left hand looks like I was developing a secret handshake with freddy f***ing Kruger.
Of course, this started happening right when I formed a bond with the thing, so now I'm too invested and in love with the demon spawn to just pawn her off back to my mom, but I also really don't want to constantly look like I just got done playing patty cake with Edward scissor hands. I also don't want to just not pay any attention to her because she gets sad and at that point she might as well go back to my mom.
Anyways, sorry for the long post, other 'strange' things she does is whenever she attacks and you try to pull away she'll try to claw into your arm and drag you back to her, she also does this whenever you pet her and stop before she attacks so I think it's her way of saying 'hey, peasant boy, I'm not done with you yet, get back here'. Except, she's you know, mauling you literally right before that.
And she's also occasionally obsessed with climbing on shoulders like some hell cat parrot which is honestly her best mood because then she can't bite you, but you do have to deal with her claws gouging into your shoulder until she decides she wants down, which spoiler alert, hurts and another spoiler alert, she never wants down. Thanks for any help you guys can give!!
okay so basically, there was a complicated situation where someone gave me 4 hampsters (he had 15) and he gave the wheel to someone else and didnt give me any feed. Im in Israel, and the lockdown doesnt allow me to get them their required feed as the store is most likely closed, and i wanted to know what i should do to keep them healthy. right now i just give them leftover fruits and veggies but theyre constantly trying to escape and are very hyper, what can i practically do? i cant buy a wheel or the proper food so im in a bit of a pickle. Theyre obviously extremely distressed (also one of them bit me for the first time, usually theyre extremely friendly)
if anyones got any ideas or somethin please let know. i wanna help these little guys out
Hi, does anyone have recommendations of cat repellent? A liquid or granules? I'm trying to keep my cat away from a certain area of the garden that could be dangerous for him.
I see a few on Amazon but not sure I trust their reviews.
Thank you
He’s not dead. I just watched the little prince again and the whole thing with the fox made me realize how much I love my cat and then I started sobbing because I’ll never be able to tell him how much I love him and I looked up if it’s normal to cry over pets but it just showed “is it normal to cry over pets dying” and I realized that my cats gonna die soon probably because he’s 7 years old or I’m gonna move away for collage and have to leave him home and then he’ll die and I won’t be able to be there for him so I’m sitting here staring at him and sobbing because he’s such a good cat he’s here for me while I’m crying and I love him so much.
So about 2 or 3 weeks ago, my boyfriend's mom came home late one night with her ex's dog. We have no idea what happened there but she just kept saying 'he was in horrible care and I couldn't leave him there'. Which okay, I get, saving an animal. But I wish we got a heads up. So since then my dog, who is 2, and our other dog that's also his mom's, who is 4, haven't been able to play with each other much because the new dog always growls and barks at my dog for playing. This new dog is much older than our dogs as well, by the way. Don't know how old though. And he has problems. But when we try to separate them for my dog and her other dog can play, the other dog gets sad he's in the room and doesn't play. But when we take him out, he goes after my dog. It's driving me crazy. Well I've been teaching my dog to leave him alone (him and the other dog sometimes would try to get the new dog to play with them but he wasn't having it), and just to not be around him if not necessary. There was an incident Saturday where the new dog bit me on my hand when I was trying to move him and my dog out from under a small fold up table because it was about to fall over. The new dog snapped at my hand, I stood straight up and he kept growling and barking (now at me, my boyfriend and our dog), so I did yell at him and tried to make him go in my boyfriend's mom's room. She was not home so I shut him in there. I have been noticing that he's been more angry and whatnot up to Saturday. But since then my dog has been by my side, which is very unlike him as he likes to run around and do dog stuff. Even when we took him to the dog park Saturday evening, he came to me more often than other times we've taken him. Also, right now as I type this, my dog is sleeping on my feet on our bed. Now it may seem normal but we have a twin size bed and yes I curl up to make room for him because I love him up here with us but tonight he has barely left our bed. He has also been with me more so now (well since December because I was bed ridden from September to December because of a torn meniscus and then muscle atrophy) because of quarantine, so when I do work I take him with me to where my computer is and he stays with me all day then our room, our porch or living room after me and my boyfriend get off work. Tonight is also the night I noticed a weird thing on his paw on one of his pads. Which I asked my knowledgeable friend about and she said it looked like a scab and to clean it off and disinfect it if there is broken skin. Which I did since there was a little broken skin. So he also has a sock around his paw, which he is very good about (I'm so lucky! Lol) But I don't know what to do really. My boyfriend's mom won't do anything she's supposed to do with the new dog it seems like and my dog has been changing a lot because of it. Is this normal for dogs to change suddenly? I'm not sure what to do. I'm worried for my dog since I can't play with him hardly and he can't play with our other dog because of the new one. His mom is basically acting like 'oh well he'll just have to get over it'. Am I overreacting?
I adopted a 4 year old cat 2 weeks ago and she’s adjusting very slowly but surely. The biggest thing bothering me though is that she is not eating. She nibbled a tiny bit the first few days and I was worried she wasn’t eating enough so I started feeding her treats...and now she won’t eat anything unless I feed her treats. I think I may have messed up her eating habits with the treats but I’ve barely seen her eat for 2 WEEKS...she drinks a lot of water and pees but is very rarely eating and pooping. I can’t take her to the vet because of the quarantine but I need some advice to get her to eat (I tried wet food she only licks the juice).
My 10 year old male dog, who is neutered, is randomly getting horny for the last past week. We have this 5 year old dog who is also a male who started first and now they constantly are humping things, how do I stop this behavior and why is this happening?!
What is the one thing someone told you that helped while grieving the loss of a pet?
Hi there!
I’m moving to Florida from Kentucky (about 800 miles) by car and I have betta fish I will be bringing with me.
Has anyone had to move a fish by car? How did you do it? I would be so incredibly grateful for any recommendations or suggestions.
Thanks!
We had been the owners of this cat for 12 years and loved him. He had a very distinctive body in that he was sort of lanky and thin, almost like a cheetah. His markings were also distinctive in that he had a "tuxedo" color scheme, but with a bit of white on his upper lip and paws. He even had a neat little trick where he would stand on his hind legs when you went to pet him. One day he got out and we didn't see him again for 2 and a half years.
A few days ago, I was going for a walk and happened to glance in the yard of one of my neighbors and to my complete and utter surprise, there he was looking at me from the porch of this house! I've always had good facial recognition, being able to recognize people that were in my elementary school class even after decades have passed, and this seems to translate to animal faces too. It was and is definitely him.
I eventually introduced myself to the neighbor, we made friends and she was very friendly and was in equal awe of the circumstance. She told me that our cat had been in and out of her yard for the last year, and that she would feed him every single morning. I thanked her for taking care of him and eventually got him and brought him home.
This woman posted about the whole thing on Facebook, and one of her neighbors sent her a message saying that she had "given away his cat". Apparently her neighbor had also been taking care of him for years, having even made a little house for him. This man called me and my family and has been threatening to call the police. The man is sort of a brute, with phrases like "I'm getting my cat" repeated over and over again, even when we've tried to reason with him about veterinary records and the burden of proof. ---Important to note here--- I never trespassed on his yard. Our cat was in a different yard, one that we were invited on.
All the while, this is happening in New Jersey, which is one of the states hit hardest by Covid-19, and dealing with veterinarians and police is just such a shit show at this current time.
Can anyone offer some insight into who has legal ownership?
I'm just getting a dog and I'm happy it's a husky and a another dog breed 😁❤️❤️❤️
I noticed small grain like particles on my bed when my cat got up (ew), which totally freaked me out. I looked it up and they are apparently proglottids (?) which are segments that break off of tapeworms.
Can someone please explain this to me and tell me what I can do to get rid of this problem?!
Hi, I was looking at some kittens over Craigslist and wanted to hear your thoughts on how I should proceed in rehoming one. There was one household who were giving out Maine coons (less than a month old) for free and as I asked them about their vet records/history along with why they’re giving them out for free, I’m still waiting for a response. Shouldn’t most kittens stay with their mothers for at least a month to ensure proper and healthy behavior? What other red flags should I be aware of?
I live in an apartment and there is a family of atleast 10 cats in the house beside the apartment, they don't havee a home and i want them to don't fear humans so they can live happy in a home (i can't because i already have 2 dogs and a cat) i already try to get close or make them come closer but they just run, is there a way besides feeding them? (sorry for bad english is not my main language)
We just adopted a 5 month old puppy. We're looking into pet insurance but were wondering if it's even worth it. Help!?
My 6, turning 7 childhood cat is in the vets right now, they found a mass in her stomach and they think it is cancer. We cant afford treatments such as radiotherapy and my mum says she doesn't want her to suffer, is it cruel to try and keep her alive? I really don't want her to die and if she does have stomach cancer, is there any other cheaper treatments, or does it just prolong the pain. I don't know, this feels terrible, especially when she is my fist cat.
My boyfriend's temporarily living with me until he finds a new place. He lived with a roommate and I think they abused her. My boyfriend works 12+ hours some days so he isn't able to give her much attention. All I know is that they promised him they'd take care of her and feed her when he comes home late. I have a cat and he's a sweetheart who loves to cuddle, so I don't know if her reactions are normal. You call her, and walk towards her to pet her at any given moment, and she gets frightened, almost twitching, and meows as if she was scared. I was trying to give her a snack earlier, I let her smell it, I called her multiple times, but instead she's running away from me and hiding in corners of the room. We also try to pet her and cuddle her and she barely accepts pets, forget about hugging or snuggling. It's kind of sad to see her like that because I met her when she was a baby (just weeks old) and she was a very active kitty who loved playing and cuddling. Now, at one year old, she's the opposite. She hides in the room from us and when she relaxes, it's almost as if we bother or frighten her when we approach her. She's only been in my house for a week, but she seems to have gotten comfortable in my room because she loves walking around and exploring the room, when were not "watching" her.. is this behavior normal? Is she like this because she's new at my apartment or because she's been abused?
We have her and 3 other cats. The other cats are very playful and even though they’re all indoor cats they roam freely around the house. She isn’t playful at all though. Whenever they get even close to her, she hisses, runs off (they obviously chase her), and hides somewhere super confined so they can’t get in. She recently stopped using the litter boxes (bc usually they follow her) and now she just pees and poops under the sink in the kitchen because she feels more protected there. She sleeps with me in my room every night but during the day she’s very stressed out. She’s really sweet to us though. I would never want to get rid of her. Could I just bring a new littler box and keep her in my room? I’m home most of the time since I’m a freelance artist.
My cat is driving me crazy. He is always running around going under bed to bed & scratching the sides of furniture. He has woke me up very early everyday this week because he even runs on top of me & scratches me! Even when I close the door from my room he managed to scratch off some of the carpet from outside the door. What should I do ??? Is it possible he is wild like this because he doesn’t have his rabies shot ?? I want to know how to control him. My other cat does not do this !!
On Friday I adopted a 7 month old cat from her foster home. I have her in the bedroom for now and as expected, she’s been hiding under the bed since then.
She has been eating, drinking, and using the litter box (although she’s been flinging a LOT out of the clean box). She’s spayed. She comes out and explores the room when I’m not in there, and at night while I’m sleeping.
The big problem has been that she yowls and cries, loudly, continuously, at night. The first night she would calm temporarily when I soothed her with words. The second night, she was at the window and door howling extremely loudly, but it lasted about an hour and a half and she stopped. Last night it went on for hours. I tried closing the blinds, laying on the floor (she would go back under the bed when I was there and was mostly quiet), etc. She quieted down around 3:30-4:00.
My boyfriend and I are not sleeping. I’m worried that my upstairs neighbor is being woken up by her too. I understand that the crying is almost certainly because she’s confused and scared and I feel horribly for her.
Any suggestions of how to help her be calm at night? I read about feliway diffusers and will try getting that today, but I understand that takes time.
to preface this im 15. so about 2-3 days ago i got a kitten, now i absolutely love him he is adorable and i knew that owning a pet needs me to be very responsible about feeding him and stuff but now that i have him i now realise its a lot more than i originally thought, im managing well but along with everything going on in the world right now its all gettting to me, is this just like nerves of just getting him or somthing?
We have a girl that’s almost 5. My mom got us a new puppy. Everything was fine but then The puppy wondered over to the older dog while she was eating and she bit the puppy in the head and we had to put it down.
My mom said we need to get rid of our big dog. But I read about food ageession with dogs and other dogs and food. So I want to know if my mom is right and we should get rid of it or if I’m right and we can keep it.
Our dog has never bit a human.
Hi all! My first time here. I have a beautiful cat named Salem and she will be 2 in May. I got her from my local Humane Society when she was just 3 months. I was told that she was found on the street prior to being brought into the Humane Society.
As I got to know her, she was distrustful of my husband & I, which at first I thought was normal but then I began to think that she was abused before we got her. For example, if we would even walk past her bowl as she was eating out of it she would run away & hide immediately. She dislikes fast movements especially if it's going towards her. It wasn't until we had her for 1 year that she let us carry her and put her down next to us so she could get pet.
Fast forward to now: she's better but she remains afraid. We have made some huge positive steps but if I even approach her while I'm fully standing and she is laying on the floor then she will run & hide. Loud/sudden sounds scare her. She is still very vigilant of us while eating but she doesn't run away which is good. She does let herself be vulnerable when we pet her. She loves cuddles and getting pet...but only for a little while. She loves watching TV and hearing the sounds that come out of it. She loves playing with the tiny noisy balls and laser toy. We've even heard her meow a few times now (she's not very vocal).
So my question is, how can I help her overcome whatever trauma she endured as a kitten? What tips/techniques should I try? My husband has 2 boy cats (who Salem loves to death) so she has learned so much from them, but as her hoomans we want to do more.
TL;DR: I have a cat who I believe was abused before I got her from the Humane Society. What can I do to help her feel more comfortable in her home?
P.S. We live in an apartment and they are only inside cats. Salem HATES the outside.
So I'm just a bit worried, my 5 year old female cat Chloe threw up about 5 times after eating a couple treats a few hours ago. She ate her dinner like normal beforehand. The first time it was all food, and the following times were just bile. They happened in quick succession. Once she was done (and it was clear when she was) I opened up a new can of food and she ate it up. She played when I brought out the laser pointer and now she's relaxing by my feet (alert, not lethargic).
I should mention this isn't unsual for her- she's long haired (maine coon mix) and has been especially fluffy lately, I do my best to brush her but she's really sensitive along her back so I'm usually not able to brush her as much as I'd like. She's definitely thrown up like this in the past, and it usually ends with her doing it again some point in the night resulting in a large hairball.
The reason I'm worried is because she's had some health issues recently. She had a Pyometra surgery at the end of December and had a UTI (likely due to left over bacteria from the Pyometra) about a month later. She had follow up appointments and was cleared, her blood work last done around the middle of February looked good. I've witnessed her urinating recently, so I'm not worried about UTI. I think it's just a hairball, but I'm so on edge because of her past medical issues and with COVID-19 going on, I'm so worried about any of my cats getting sick and being unable to receive treatment.
So just to sum up, she vomited multiple times but is now eating, drinking, playing and relaxing as normal since 30 minutes or so after it happened. She has a history of vomiting like this due to being a long haired cat/ hairballs. Should I be okay to wait this out?
TLDR; I'm paranoid as fuck.
I'm having a problem with my kitten and I have no idea what to do. She's been keeping me up at night by pawing at my tv, whether it's on or off. She will not stop. I have no idea why she does it. I put tin foil on my dresser to try and prevent her from jumping up there and shes literally just prancing over it like it's nothing. I've even tried to distract her with toys and treats, and I stopped giving her attention when she does it but nothing is working. I've never had a cat do this before. I dont know how to get her to stop. Does anyone have any advice?
My cat is my best friend and I love her so much. Her room is my room, I got her at three months and she’s slept with me almost every night. She’s such a great cat, she never wakes me up and cuddles me when I wake up every morning. However, lately I think a mother mouse got into my house and had babies. My cat has been bringing the babies in my room/bed and letting them free to chase them around. Im so scared she’s gonna drop one on my face when I’m sleeping that I’ve been locking her out of my room. It breaks my heart so much because whenever I open the door she’s sleeping outside and meows at me and a cute little voice. I feel like a terrible cat owner and like I’m making her really sad. She’s free to come in during the day, but I just cannot sleep soundly at night with the fear of her dropping a mouse on my face or bed.
I heard that you are still troubled by bathing your pet?
Bathing dogs is actually very easy, you can easily grasp with one hand.
She has been on this farm for 8 years. We just moved in the beginning of sept, she was pregnant when we moved in but we have NO idea what happened to her litter. Welp shes pregnant again, and she is VERY pregnant! She is partially blind and very timid. But my husband was able to get her into our heated garage and we set up a nice comfortable area for her! Fuzzy blankets, litter box, fresh water, food everything!!!! Is this wrong? Are we doing the wrong thing? She is a smaller cat but her belly is HUGE! I just want her to be able to give birth in a nice warm space and have all of her essentials. We are not bothering her, the whole space is her own. We live in Iowa and the weather is super cold and windy, we have 5 barns and a large chicken coop (she usually sleeps in) but it wasnt as warm as our garage. What do we do?!
Im a super germaphobe and our puppy is getting her stitches removed tomorrow at our local animal hospital, and i just want to know if theres any quick remedy to cleaning her once i get her back. We meet in the parking lot so theres no closeness at all, and they wear masks and gloves but my OCD coupled with the germaphobia(actually one in the same) makes this really difficult and i cant NOT take her. I live with my folks and they are older so i prefer to sanitize the dog if i could somehow without hoing TOO overboard about it. Not that i don't trust my vet but if you have OCD or severe anxiety you will get what im saying.
Thank you
My partner and I live in an apartment with one cat (6 yr neutered male), and we got a second baby (8.5 yr spayed female) about five days ago. She's been doing well, and the only struggle is that while I've seen her use the litter box, she's also peeing in the bedroom (so far just one spot that I know of). We have two litter boxes that we sift every other day (though it seems they both prefer to use just one of the litter boxes).
- She currently has a UTI, which is at least partly the reason she's peeing outside of the litter box. We're about halfway through her antibiotics, so I'm not sure when I should start seeing an improvement by now or if it just needs more time / another round of antibiotics to fix the accidents. Either way, I definitely want to prevent her from peeing in the bedroom out of habit even after we've successfully treated her UTI, but I'd rather not keep a litter box in our bedroom for the rest of our lives if possible lol
- This has been quite a change for her, coming to a new place with new owners in addition to getting used to being around another cat. I'm expecting there to be some bumps along the road, but I'm not sure if this is caused by stress that will resolve itself with time or if I need to go ahead and take steps to make sure she stops peeing in the bedroom
I guess the main issue is that I'm not sure if I just need to give the antibiotics more time to work, or if this is a transitional stressful time and she'll start peeing in the litter box more consistently after she acclimates along with treating the UTI, or if I need to actively work to get her peeing in the litter boxes and nowhere else.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hello fellow redditors,
My wife and I adopted an 15 year old basset hound about a year ago. A little background about him and his behaviors:
When I'm alone with him. I can pet him however I like (top of the head, scratch his chin, etc.) and he would be ok with it about 90-95% of the time. However, when he is around my wife, if I try to pet him, especially if I tried to scratch his chin, he would growl and bark at me... On the other hand, she can do whatever she wants with him and he would never bark at her.
We're pretty lost on what to do. We have tried to train him by slowly putting my hand underneath his chin, and if he didn't growl, I would give him some treats. Still didn't work that well. I wonder if he just becomes jealous/protective when my wife is around him and he doesn't want anybody else touching him. I'm looking to see If anyone have any thoughts on this or advice on things I could try. Thanks in advance!
She barks howls and whines when ever I leave my apartment. I've moved to a new one and if I get noise complaints I'm gonna be evicted. I have a bark collar but I'd rather not use it. She's border collie Pomeranian cross. I need help and I just don't know what to do.
I am asking because three of my kitten's health have became critical while I was sick with COVID-19. I know I am bugging but I am unsure if there is a correlation between pets and the COVID-19. I know the CDC does refute this observation, but I was wondering if anyone had similar experience? I feel that not so much is known about this virus. Thank you kindly!
Hi all,
So my husband and I just got a puppy! Neither of us have ever owned a dog before and have little idea about what we're doing. Unfortunately, we disagree about discipline. I've done a lot of googling and research and most of it says not to use aggressive methods, but my husband is of the opinion of treating our pup with a pack animal-like mentality. I know in the past that smacking a dog on its nose with a newspaper used to be an acceptable form of discipline and a friend of mine who owns two dogs suggested spanking for things like pottying inside. As far as I've seen however, stuff like this has fallen out of popular usage as positive reinforcement has taken place.
I just wanted to get other people's opinion so let me know how you've trained your dogs out of unwanted behavior and what methods you find are the most rewarding for both the dog and yourselves. Thanks!
**BTW he's a really good pup. We're having the most trouble with biting (he's teething and redirecting doesn't always work).
Just thought I'd post this to help out any Canadian pet parents. I have two strictly indoor cats. Over a year ago I bought two Tractive pet trackers and have been super happy with them. Gives me piece of mind that if my cats ever got out, we'd have a better chance to find them. Battery lasts about 3 days and comes with a charger. The cats dont mind the device on their collars (they're pretty easy going cats though). It's pricey but imo worth it for our little furry family members.
If you have any questions I'm happy to help- I've been super happy with the product.
Hey fellow pet enthusiasts and redditers. My girlfriend is doing a research project on the differences between the environment of pet stores and animal shelters. She planned to go to some places around us and interview workers, but they are now closed in our state due to Covid-19. She created an online survey and could really use some responses:

Starting this morning, my dog has been shaking his head and ears A LOT. He's also been itching his ears with his paws. I'm worried he may have an ear infection or allergies. I want to take him to the vet but with this pandemic, I'm scared to go into public places since I'm 24 weeks pregnant. I was thinking of calling my vet and asking for an ear wash and cream that I could just come pick up real quick? Do they need to examine his ears to know the exact sort of wash or cream he needs, or is it just a run of the mill wash and cream they give for all ear irritations?
I could get my husband to take him to the vet and then come home and shower and wash his clothes, but he still risks bringing this back home to me if he contracts it in public. That is if my vet will even see us, I don't know what their new rules and safety measures are, they aren't open until tomorrow when I can call.
I dont want my little guy to be in any discomfort, I also don't want to catch this virus. What do you think I should do?
Hello! I'm the owner of a 5 years dog, it's mixed and medium size, I usually take her out two times a day, in the afternoon i just take her out to the park like 15 minutes then in the night I take her out to play in the park, approximately one hour everyday, I've been doing this since she was a puppy and it had always worked for her, but because of the quarantine I'm not able no take her out more than 20 minutes and I can't go far my house, so in other words I haven't been able to take my dog out and waste her energy it's been two weeks since this and she is getting really stress, she's showing changes in her behavior in a bad way because of this, I've try to play with her in the house but it's not as effective, so I wanted to know if anyone could please give me an advice in this situation on how or what kind of game I could play with my dog while we're still in quarantine, thank you so much.
So my roommate has an old medium pitbull mix we love to bits. I’ve known her as long as my best friend, she’s 11 now. However since I’ve moved in with her I’ve noticed she HAS to sleep in either of our beds, fine it’s cute. BUT, this f*cking dog takes up the whole bottom part of the bed; right in front of my feet or sleeps on it.
Look, I get it’s cute, but when you have back problems and sleep in fetal position, not it’s not. I finally snapped and lightly yelled at her. I feel bad now, but I can’t put up with it, my back is killing me. Not sure if this makes me a piece of sh*t or not, but it worked. (Side note, I would never hurt her or any animal). Anyone deal with this? What’s the best thing to do to break this habit or handle this?
i’m not sure because idk if it’s the same as peppermint and i can’t find anything online, also can’t go to the vet or ask because they’re closed for quarantine
My mom and I live in a one bedroom condo and decided to adopt a kitten from the shelter a little over six months ago. Our cat’s name is Mama, and if I had to guess, I’d say she’s almost nine months old now.
I have no idea about her background or how she was “brought up”, all we know is that she was brought in by a Good Samaritan when she was a kitten. Stray, maybe?
Anyways, she is clingy as hell. All she does is wreck things by scratching and tearing. You can’t even have private time in your room because she’ll literally tear the carpet out from under the door and cry until you let her in. She always needs company or else she’ll go crazy. What’s most annoying is that she’ll sleep with one of us, get up at early hours and cry and scratch the bed/play with stuff on our dressers until we pay attention to her.
She has plenty of toys and I try to make time to entertain her, but my mom and I are fairly busy with work and school and our personal lives. Sometimes we’d like to just shut the door and have quiet time without the cat, but with her, it’s not possible. We’ve had multiple cats before and they have never acted in this way, they’ve always been fairly independent.
My mom thought about declawing her to prevent her from ruining our stuff, but that’s a route I’d rather avoid. I’ve also brought up getting her a buddy, but my mom says it would be too much work to maintain the litter box. We have to clean it so often as it is. The thing is, I’m seen people have a cat in small places like this and they don’t seem to have this problem?
We love her very much and would rather not give her away, so is there any advice we should take?
So, I will supply pictures if asked, but we recently decided it was time for my huge fluffy Maine coone named Shredder to get a hair cut. We used to do this all the time in the spring to make him more comfortable in the heat and make him more hygienic (we shave off any matted fur on his belly and cut around his butt so he doesn't get poop stuck in his fur. This time around though, we cannot seem to get his fur an even length. We decided its whatever, but now he looks really silly and I honestly love it. What's the funniest way you've ever groomed your pet?
We are under 3 weeks lockdown. My fish food pellets is low. Can last for week. There is no shop open, online services are closed. What can I feed him?
My cat was acting weird yesterday, when I tried to pick him up he was obviously in pain, and then I found out there was something wrong with his belly. Took him to vets and they said he has a 4cm deep cut on his belly, they needed to do an operation and open him up to see if his organs are ok. Luckily they are but now he needs antibiotics and to stay in for 2 weeks while his stitches heal.
He was fine the night before and the morning so obviously he must have cut himself at some point during the day. I have searched high and low for what may have caused it but I struggle to find it. It's a nice neighborhood, no troublemakers or animal abusers as far as I'm aware. He is an antisocial cat so he doesn't go near people and you couldn't catch him even if you tried.
I came to ask if its common and what may have caused it? Its really freaked me out and I don't want it to happen again :(
What do you think should and could be done on a governmental regulatory level to minimize the amount of abandoned pets, especially dogs and cats, thus minimizing the quantity of unhappy animals in shelters?I think it should be forbidden to sell puppies if you are not a professional breeder (only giving away). However I also think more animals should be sterilized, to minimize the amount of unwanted kittens/puppies, but I don't know yet how to better regulate it.
What would be your suggestions on this matter? (I am not a politician, but this problem disturbs me a lot)
Today my cat got into a fight with another cat after my little cousin accidently let him go outside and escape the house and he was a mess when he came back, he was bleeding in a few spots including the lip and face and had blood on its claws as well I’m guessing from the other cat, usually id take him to the vet straight away however in my country they’re all closed down due to corona virus and everything is in lockdown, idk what to do, any tips ?
Now, I know that taking a pet is a matter of circumstances. In my case, I'm an analyst dev, so I'll have the opportunity to do home working regularly even after the pandemy.
I am supposed to move house (from my parent to an appartment) soon-ish. That said, I know that being alone isn't going to be the best for me. I also got (potentially) an access to a garden. It's not fenced, so whatever little critter I put there will be able to leave. Lots of nature around, so I'm not expecting him to be ran over, although we've seen foxes in the backyard.
I've never been a fan of cages, and I don't want to take a pet that's going to be lonely when I'm not here (I'm trying to solve my loneliness, not give it to someone else.
Any idea of a pet that could work? I'm kinda afraid of taking a cat with foxes outside.
I have a 12yo boy and he’s never been very obedient (he begs, he’s lazy, he doesn’t listen very often) but it used to be manageable and endearing but ever since our older dog died last July, his behavior has gotten out of hand. Our older boy was as good and loyal and one gets and he knew all the rules, and if the younger didn’t listen, he’d be “scolded” (barked at, snapped at). With his older brother gone, and now getting old himself, he just doesn’t seem to give a damn about listening to anyone; he barks at every dog we see on a walk, he hates going outside even just to use the bathroom, he constantly chases the cats (cats that he has lived with his whole life but always ignored until now). He’s a little mushy puggle-mutt so I’m not worried about him being dangerous or aggressive, but it’s getting tiring having to constantly be apologizing to people when we’re on a walk because he won’t leave their dogs alone (even if the other dogs are uninterested) and letting him out to use the bathroom but still finding a mess in the house because when he’s let out he just stands by the door and barks to be let back in. He has no sense of shame or remorse so yelling at him/withholding things is just a fun game to him and he’s just excited to get attention. We’ve been extra attentive of him since his big brother died, and we know he has to grieve too, but he also just can’t be an hedonistic asshole and get what he wants all the time.
TLDR; Our older dog (16yo) passed away last summer, and our younger (12yo) dog has become horribly behaved in his absence. Is there anything I can do??
It's really annoy8ng her. I'm curious about it. The dog doesn't follow her every time, but the cat does, and he follows her right into the bathroom.

A dog (with a collar, no tags) randomly showed up on my friends porch and stayed for a week. My friend couldn't take him in because of his landlord; I volunteered to take him in.
I am extremely empathetic and impulsive to a fault. I work in social work and my instinct is to act immediately to help. I've fostered a dog once in the past but I haven't actually owned or trained a dog myself. Also, I'm a full time college student with two jobs and I live alone.
I immediately drove to my friends house, picked the dog up and took him to the vet to see if he was microchipped. He was not.
I've had him for three days now and he is a handful. I was incredibly naive going into this. I have zero experience training a dog and I feel like I'm awful at it. He isn't house trained, he jumps on people, and has a biting problem. I'm aware that dogs need discipline and I'm trying to be stern but it's not very effective. When i try to discipline him he starts licking me and tries to cuddle which is a clear sign that he is not intimidated by me. I've posted all over the lost/found pet pages in my city and no luck so far with an owner. Initially, I thought that I could foster him until he found a good home. However, he isn't neutered and I'm not sure if he has any vaccines.
I've considered adopting but it's not really an option. I cannot afford his vet bills--I've been laid off from one of my two jobs due to the pandemic. Also, once the quarantine ends I will no longer be able to adequately take care of him considering my normal work/school schedule. Additionally, I'm graduating college soon and am looking to move abroad for an extended period of time so I cannot adopt long-term even if I had enough resources to do so.
I haven't had any luck finding his owners. I'm in way over my head here. What is the best ethical thing to do here?
TL:DR took in a stray with the intent of fostering, not sure where to go from here
Our dog needs to be sedated at this point just to have her nails trimmed. Due to the quarantine and my mother passing, I've missed too much work to take her to the vet (which I'm not sure is open anyway). Her nails are so long that she's hurting us without meaning it. I need a safe, non-traumatizing way to do this myself. She used to let me, it's just get anxiety has gotten worse the older she's gotten. She's about 50lbs. Even the anxiety meds they gave us years ago for another issue did nothing. I need to do this so she doesn't get her nails caught on something and hurt herself, which she's done before.
While I currently don't live on my own, when I graduate college I plan on moving out, and one of the first things I want to do is get a dog, particularly a small one to start out with since I'll probably live in an apartment, but it Isn't exactly simple since I'm looking for the personality type that my family's current dog has (he is a neutered 2-year-old labrador-pitbull mix). I'm specifically looking for an emotionally needy dog that constantly wants to play and get attention (which I'm more than happy with and keeps me active), and the problem is, he is the only dog I've ever met with this personality type. Every other dog I've met has been more reserved, lazy, stubborn with training, or very particular about when they want attention, which Isn't the type of animal I would like to live with (which is why I don't like cats). So, whether I'm getting a puppy or adult dog, are there any behavior indicators I should look out for when meeting them to find the type of dog I'm looking for?
