Newly adopted cat crying all night - help!

On Friday I adopted a 7 month old cat from her foster home. I have her in the bedroom for now and as expected, she’s been hiding under the bed since then.

She has been eating, drinking, and using the litter box (although she’s been flinging a LOT out of the clean box). She’s spayed. She comes out and explores the room when I’m not in there, and at night while I’m sleeping.

The big problem has been that she yowls and cries, loudly, continuously, at night. The first night she would calm temporarily when I soothed her with words. The second night, she was at the window and door howling extremely loudly, but it lasted about an hour and a half and she stopped. Last night it went on for hours. I tried closing the blinds, laying on the floor (she would go back under the bed when I was there and was mostly quiet), etc. She quieted down around 3:30-4:00.

My boyfriend and I are not sleeping. I’m worried that my upstairs neighbor is being woken up by her too. I understand that the crying is almost certainly because she’s confused and scared and I feel horribly for her.

Any suggestions of how to help her be calm at night? I read about feliway diffusers and will try getting that today, but I understand that takes time.
