What are some behaviors to look out for the type of dog I want?

While I currently don't live on my own, when I graduate college I plan on moving out, and one of the first things I want to do is get a dog, particularly a small one to start out with since I'll probably live in an apartment, but it Isn't exactly simple since I'm looking for the personality type that my family's current dog has (he is a neutered 2-year-old labrador-pitbull mix). I'm specifically looking for an emotionally needy dog that constantly wants to play and get attention (which I'm more than happy with and keeps me active), and the problem is, he is the only dog I've ever met with this personality type. Every other dog I've met has been more reserved, lazy, stubborn with training, or very particular about when they want attention, which Isn't the type of animal I would like to live with (which is why I don't like cats). So, whether I'm getting a puppy or adult dog, are there any behavior indicators I should look out for when meeting them to find the type of dog I'm looking for?
