Nervous about adopting a dog

So my husband and I put in an application on an almost 4 year old dog. We visited him and he’s the sweetest. Very loving and affectionate and lower energy. He just needs to go to a home where someone’s always around. My husband works nights so it works out since someone is always home. I’ve wanted a dog for years but never committed as I have 3 cats that I adore and worry about them hating me for bringing home a dog. I always assumed we would need to get a puppy but I just can’t do a puppy. That’s too much time and work to train and everything. I figured getting an older dog that’s already housebroken and chill would be the way to go.

Now I’m so worried that we shouldn’t get this dog if we are picked. What if my cats don’t adjust and I won’t be able to hold them or snuggle them anymore? I’ve never had issues when adopting cats as the oldest always loved when I brought home a new kitten.

The dog doesn’t have any issues with cats and the shelter will bring him to my home to have a meet up. I know one of them will immediately hide under the bed cause he’s not into strangers and I’m unsure about the other two. One will definitely meet the dog and it could go either way with the third cat. Should I just not get a dog? I have very affectionate cats that I’d like to keep that way. But I also don’t want to be held hostage and never be able to get at least one dog in my life. I’m not sure what to do. Maybe I’m overthinking it.

I'm seeing some really upsetting things on TikTok.

Okay, so I enjoy TikTok. I scroll through vids on my for you page.

Several times, videos of animals in very very bad situations have come up. I block the accounts they come from. But the images and situations I've seen have really really upset me and they were things I very much did not want to see in my entire life.

I really cannot bare to see content like this. Most of TikTok is fun but once on a while something like this comes up and I really need it to stop.

Are there any rules about content involving cruelty to animals? A filter? I haven't found any means of reporting this shit.

I didn't know where else to post. Also wondering if anyone else has this issue with TikTok.

Should I keep my roommates cat that she is rehoming even though it doesn't like my kitten?

TDLR at bottom

My roommate is moving and rehoming her cats. One of them already has a home picked out, so that leaves just one of hers as an option to keep, and it happens to be my favorite one who I would love to keep. I have one kitten myself, which I initially planned on being my only pet. However, where I am moving allows two animals though and my kitten loves other cat attention. Hes bonded very much with the cat of hers I can't keep, he loves to play with animals in general, including dogs too. I dont see him doing well as a solo pet. So I would like to have another cat in addition to mine for the sake of my kitten, seeing as I work extremely long shifts an I dont want him to be too lonely. I think it'll be good for him to have a playmate. I would LOVE to keep the one thats still an option, he is wonderful, hes laying next to me as I type. BUT, he hates my kitten. He randomly goes and antagonizes him. He doesn't really like her other cat either. He is at BEST indifferent to other cats but at worst, bossy and antagonisitc. My new place I am moving is much smaller than this one, so they wouldn't have too much space to themselves if they kept bickering.

So my question is...

Should I keep her cat, or let her find him a home with no other cats where he can be stress free? He came from a place that had no other cats and he was alone with his retired owner all day long until she died, so I think he is used to being the star of the show, and doesn't like to share attention. I love him so much but Im worried the two will never get along and it'll just stress them both out. My kitten is always happy and playful, unless this other cat is around. And I want the kitten thats already mine to be able to have a companion on par with the cat thats already got a home picked out, so if that means adopting another kitten around his age and friendlier, thats what I would do.

I have never had multiple cats before this, so I dont know how common it is for them to "learn to get along". Do you think they could ever be friends...?? Or would it be too stressful to try and force it on them in my new tiny place.

TDLR: I have the option of adopting a new kitten to be my kittens playmate or keeping the cat my roommate thats moving away is rehoming. I like her cat a lot but it doesn't like my kitten, and im worried they will fight a lot. My kitten likes to play with animals and needs a companion.

My cat's claw (shell?) fell out! Has anyone with an active cat experienced this?

A few days ago, my Cat #1 came from a vet with an E-collar. This shocked my hyperactive Cat #2 who panicked and ran, then I discovered this on the floor moments later.

https://preview.redd.it/929hfoebgrq71.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67b029a7cae9435f34fbd5eee7777531cf4e300f

This looks like an empty claw shell. So I checked out my Cat #2's paw, and his left back paw looked like below (please ignore my bandaged hand). So I put a disinfective wound flush I bought from my vet store on the paw and rinsed it with warm water.

https://preview.redd.it/04jvbpebgrq71.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=360eeb6e4b7d110625747320f37c6381b724ab97

But today, I can't even see the red blob I saw earlier, it just disappeared. Has anyone with an active cat experienced this? An entire cat claw shell falling out? Any stories would be appreciated. Thank you!

From best friends to worst enemies.

Me and my wife had one cat. We’ve had her for the longest time and decided to get her a friend while we’re both away at work. So, we decided to adopt a baby kitten. They grew up together and got along just fine. They always played with each other and would love each other’s company. After about two years of living together they got in a big fight all of a sudden like street cats would. The older cat became very territorial and would always hiss and growl at her and made sure the younger cat is always in the kitchen. The older cat can’t stand having her around anymore! I don’t understand, they would always get into small fight with each other, which the younger cat would always start and they would be just fine. Now all of a sudden after just one fight they can’t be near each other anymore. They used to be so close and best friends for the longest time. It’s frustrating to see them like this. Any suggestions how to fix this behavior between them ? ( both the younger and older cat are females)

Five month old kitten starts panting soon after playing. Should I be worried?

About three weeks ago we adopted a 5 month old short haired orange tabby. We just took his cone off after being neutered two or so weeks ago. I noticed when playing with him he’ll start panting after just a few laps around the couch. If I throw one of his toys down the hall, it only takes two or three up and backs before he starts panting. I haven’t noticed any other instances outside of playing where he starts panting. Is this something I should be worried about? I’ve just been chalking it up as he’s out of shape from being a lot less playful when he had his cone on.

How often do you bathe your cat?

Figured I'd do a poll so it would be easier for everyone.

I have a 6 year old female cat and in the 3 years that I've had her I've bathed her once (flea bath when I first found her outside) my boyfriend mentioned to me that I never give her a bath but I thought it wasn't necessary unless dirty from outside or fleas? She's always been an indoor cat since I got her and I keep up on flea meds cos she hates baths so much. Is this acceptable or am I a bad cat mom?

Cats all of a sudden attacking.

I have 5 cats, three were rescued and from the same litter when the were kittens a year ago, two female and one male. The other two are older and female. All five cats have gotten along extremely well for the past year.

All of a sudden a few days ago, the male cat started attacking his litter-mate. Two of the other cats also try to attack the same cat, the other litter-mate, and one of the older cats.

They have been best friends prior to this, and it seems all of a sudden three of them are teaming up trying to kill one of the other cats.

Any help to try to resolve this will be greatly appreciated.

HELP don’t know if our dogs ate rat poison or the mice did

We had two rat poison blocks in my room and I’m always in my room and our three dogs never come in there, I also shut the door everytime I leave the room. About a week or two we checked them and the blocks were still there, now they are completely gone. We even put the blocks in good places. Can mice even eat the whole block that quickly? That is just my main question because we dont know if the mice ate it or the dogs somehow did.

Not sure why my allergies are acting up?

So, I have year-round allergies and it gets worse during the spring season. I live in a state with terrible pollen levels, which doesn’t help. Anyway, I’m mildly allergic to cats, but I’ve lived with a cat before and my allergy symptoms for the cat basically went away. So I got a kitten 8 months ago and at the time he was 2 months old. I had a runny nose for a few days, but cleared up after and didn’t have any allergy symptoms until my allergies started acting up again 3 months ago. I brush my cat often, vacuum, have an air filter on 24/7, and take Zyrtec daily but I still get a runny nose from time to time. I’m not sure if it’s from the cat, but I don’t know why I would experience allergy symptoms again. Could it be because he’s almost an adult cat and sheds more? I’m just having a hard time trying to decide if it’s the pollen outside or my cat affecting my allergies.

Some help with a kitten

Note: vets aren't available in my area as of the moment since there's a storm so taking it to a vet isn't an option for now unfortunately.

A stray kitten that decided to live in our house recently stopped eaten/drinking and is consistently meowing non stop. This has been going on for two days now and I'm losing sleep because of both concern and the annoying meowing. I already had it dewormed and I don't think it's a worm issue since the last time it defecated the feces was solid and no worms/eggs were present. It's also kind of aggressive now to the point where it has its claws out when it's on my shoulders. It used to be very docile and would purr alot when it was on my shoulder or on top of me. Now it just sits there quietly for a few minutes then goes full on berserk meowing. I've tried softly touching it all over to see if it reacts negatively but so far no issues. It's current behaviour is that it will wander around the house meowing annoyingly loud, sometimes meow at a wall, walk around in circles and meow. Any sort of advice from people with similar experiences with cats is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Am I a bad owner for doing this?

My dog has terminal cancer and she will be put down in a few weeks. I’ve known for a few months so I’ve had time to get used to the idea that she’s going to be gone.

In the meantime, she’s on medication that heightens her hunger and thirst (as well as her energy, she’s gone from normal to insanely hyper).

This means that no matter how many times I’m bringing her out everyday, she’s pooing and peeing in the house at least 4-5 times a day. I can’t lie, it’s getting a bit gross at this point.

She sleeps downstairs because she would keep me awake when she slept in my bedroom. So now, when I go downstairs, she knows I’m awake because she can hear me.

But instead of going to see her, and cleaning up her messes straight away in the morning, I make coffee and go back to bed for thirty or more minutes to prepare myself.

Am I an awful owner for doing this? I just can’t handle cleaning straight away when I get up. I feel like I’m awful because she can hear that I’m awake. The room is big enough though, it’s not like she’s forced to stand in her own mess. She sleeps on the other side of the room from where she does her business.

The shelter gave me a male cat, and spayed him? Should I do anything?

I adopted a small kitten from the shelter about two weeks ago. It was supposed to be to just a standard orange female kitten, 8 weeks old. I did a meet and greet at the shelter and once I said I wanted the cat they said they have to get it spayed first and I'll pick her up a few days later. A few days later, I picked her up from the hospital with a clear spay scar and took her home, nothing crazy.. Today, I went to the vet, at another place to get her vaccines and do a check-up for the first time. When I got there, the vet took a look at my cat for a bit and saw the scar on her stomach, and asked if it was for a hernia or something. I was like no, the shelter gave her to a hospital to spay her before I picked her up. She was extremely confused and double-checked and said look your cat definitely has testicles. it's a boy. I was so confused, this whole time I thought it was a girl, all my paperwork, everything said it was female. She said before she continues with the check-up I should check in with the shelter and hospital and ask. My cat's testicles are still intact. I wanted to post this and ask has anything like this happened to anyone before, should I do anything about this? What did the hospital do to my cat? They cut them open and didn't see a uterus, or previous spay scar, and didn't bother to say anything? The shelter is the official city animal shelter so it wasn't from a shady place or anything. I plan on keeping my cat either way just to be clear. Also, my friends have asked how did I not notice their genitalia, and all I can say to that is, being so young, you can't see their penis really, and the testicles are like the size of two rice krispies, all behind their hair which is kinda long as well. thanks.

Overfeeding a cat?

The food I give my cat says he should have 1/3-2/3 cup per day based on his weight. However if I give him less than 3/4 cup he whines and cries constantly. He is completely satisfied with 3/4 cup and doesn’t have any complaints then. Does anyone else over feed like this and is it ok?

My cat hates her kittens all of the sudden.

Hello, my problem is my cat hates and hisses her kittens all of the sudden. She have 4 kittens and we gave the 1 kitten to our grandmother. My grandmother returned the kitten because her dogs are too aggresive towards it. She's too afraid because of what might happen to the kitten. When I brought it home, my cat (the mother) did some sniffing to the kitten, and she hisses and hates her kittens all of the sudden. She used to be sweet to her kittens, she's nursing them properly. She might even scratch them when they're too near to her. Is there any explanation to this? Thanks a lot.

I have been insanely cleaning all day. I cant get ride of the flies...ive tried fly paper..I cant spray bug spray around the piggies. We got new kitten (3 months old) about 3 weeks ago. I'm a bit worried his fighting with my 7 years old cat might be too much? Or is it playing?

Hey guys, I've had this 7 years old cat since he was a baby and recently my girlfriend wanted to have her own kitten so we adopted one 3 weeks ago. They seem to get along not too bad (old cat was a bit anxious at first), and they often sleep on the same couch, etc.

However, whenever they start ''playing'' or ''play fighting'' I always feel like it turns a bit too intense? Some hissing comes out of my old cat sometimes and they seem to be biting each other pretty hard...

Video : https://streamable.com/o0wzqi

My old cat has always had a habit of biting me and my girlfriend pretty hard too, did he teach that to the kitten somehow and thats how they play? Are these fights too much?

Thanks for your help.

Can I let my cats be around 'toxic' plants if they won't chew them?

I'm moving my two 8 year old cats into my apartment with my partner. We have lots of house plants, and it seems like every single one of them appear on the 'toxic for cats' lists. I know my cats won't chew them they never seem to chew things besides food. They've been around lilies, brushed against them, before we knew how bad they could be.

Is it safe to move my cats in? Or should I put the 'toxic' plants in another room and make sure to keep an eye on the cats? Or should I convince (haha good luck) my partner to give up the plants?

Dental for an old cat - checklist to ask vets

HI All,

I've compiled a list of things I want to ask my vet regarding my cats (13.5years) dental treatment for gingivitis. Just wanted to see if it sounds okay and if I have missed anything off?

(After a bad event few months ago, I am super cautious now and want to understand everything fully. My cat eats fine and is generally healthy, hence I have been in 2 minds about getting this treatment done)

Things to ask vet:
Full blood panel vs routine pre-anesthetic panel (on day of surgery)
Do they use IV catheter and give IV fluids during anaesthesia? Can we request it?
What type of anaesthesia are they using? Sevoflurane ? What about sedatives?
Will she be intubated?
Will Xrays be done? What about potential extractions?
What sort of monitoring? BP? Heart Rate? SpO2?
Eye lube / Eye protection to prevent debris from mouth getting in?
How is she monitored whilst coming out of anaesthesia?
How long will she be with the vets?
Ask them to walk us through entire procedure

Many thanks

- worried cat owner

Is it wrong of me to prefer to give a cat away to a person I barely know rather than to a shelter?

I have to give my cat away because no one in my family cares about him or does things for him or spends time with him and I'm moving out soon and I can't bring him.

When I told my parents I really think we need to give him away (as much as it breaks my heart, which, believe me, it really does), they suggested bringing him to a shelter. I've heard horror stories about shelters and it just really freaks me out. I would prefer to give him directly to someone, and none of my family or friends are looking for a pet.

I put up a flyer in a reputable business where family friends work. I'm pretty confident everyone who go there are nice, normal people. I put a description of my cat and some pictures of him and my phone number. Someone actually called me yesterday. It sounded like a teen girl, and she was translating my answers to her mom in the background. She sounded perfectly nice and excited and they're coming to see the cat today.

Now I'm getting scared because my parents are saying what if they just want the cat to make him fight other animals, what if they abuse him, etc. because I'm offering the cat for free. I really want the best life for him. My gut is telling me the girl who called me and her family are good people, and I will confirm/reject that today when they come. Can I trust my gut instinct? Would it really be better to give him to a shelter rather than a stranger (even if I'm going to meet them)? Are people who abuse pets much more common than I think? Am I naive?

I'm so frustrated and stressed because I've always had to take care of my cat and no one has cared about him, and they haven't helped me at all with this process of giving him away which has been so scary and sad for me, and now they're making me paranoid.

Breaking point with my Ragdoll cat

I got a Ragdoll when she was literally 4 weeks old. She used to be extremely sweet and loving. Now she is awful.

No one can enter my living room without her growling and hissing, even though they are no where near her. And She bullies my other cat who is a shy rescue.

She bites and scratches everyone. It’s ridiculous. Our groomer even refused to see her again because she is so vicious.

I’ve tried everything, those calm things you plug in the wall. Giving her space, last thing I want to try to the vet for medication. Vet said it was an option. Before I do this, is there anything else I could try? I would love to rehome her because she bullies my other cat, she is beautiful but no one would want her because of her attitude.

Terminal Cancer

We just found out, like this morning, that my 4 year old lab has hemangiosarcoma with roughly 3 months to live.

I am looking for advice on how to make his QOL as comfortable as possible. Of course all the loves and cuddles, but are there any holistic approaches, or anything anyone has experienced can help keep him relatively comfortable?

Any and all words of advice for this situation are welcome! This is the first pet I have ever lost, and he's my baby.

How do I set boundaries with a cat that isn't mine?

My neighbors kitten keeps trying to get into my apartment and can get somewhat aggressive with me when I take him outside. How do I get him to stop this behavior? I have two cats of my own (who the kitten is friends with, which is I'm sure at least part of the reason why he wants in in the first place) so I can't use any kind of repellants.

So my cat is afraid of something that we have and we don't know what it is. My cat is so scared to the point of pissing and shiting upstairs on the carpet. We don't know how to fix this behavior so we just put a door in front of the staircase. But now my cat is begging to be let upstairs. Can someone please tell me how to fix this behavior?

Advice on what to do with stray cat I’ve been feeding

About 4 months ago a cat started showing up to my doorstep. I began feeding once in a while. And slowly I fed it more often. I now feed it twice a day.

It’s gotten super friendly with me, it enjoys pets, it comes into my enclosed porch as long as the door is open it loves treats.

What can I do for him? I’ve been thinking about keeping him but I’m not sure if have the time to train a stray cat how to be a house cat. But I also feel so bad for him knowing he’s sleeping under cars. Sometime I’ll wake up in the morning for work and he rushes out from under my car at 7am to my steps.

I know there the catch and release program for spaying and neutering but besides that what can I do? Winter is right around the corner and my heart literally cries every time I think about that cat in the cold

Took cat to vet for first time, felt horrible

So my cat's eyes have been watering in the evening/night and it's gotten to the point where the area in the corner of his eyes by his nose has become red and irritated, almost a little bloody. He is a little over a year old and I have had him and his brother since about 3 and a half months after they were born, and they have never been out of the house.

I put him in the pet carrier and put him in the car and the whole drive to the vet I have never heard him meow so loud, it sounded like he had no idea what was going on and was crying for help. Might also have been being away from his brother.

But still I felt really bad, and even when we got to the vet he kept crying for awhile until he finally scooted all the way to the back of the pet carrier and kinda just laid down and was quiet. but then the vet had to take a rectal temp and the cryign started again.

Thankfully he calmed down a little bit after we got back home, but anyone else feel bad when they have to go to the vet?

Cat with both male and female parts?!

I am trapping a couple strays and noticed one I feed daily has both parts… but she had a litter of kittens recently. Is it possible for them to have male and female genitalia or am I crazy? It’s a colony I am working on fixing so there is a lot of inbreeding… if that could cause this I’m not sure.

My cat doesnt wanna stop playing

Hi

I am new to having a cat we adopted him 4 months ago and everything seemed to be fine at first, he was very cuddly and loving but now he doesn't wanna stop playing and I'm desperate for him to stop. I cant sleep at night and have developed insomnia. I try changing his routine feeding him before bed playing with him for more then 3h every single day and he just doesn't stop . I cannot ignore his pleads because he keeps scratching everything and biting cables, running around bumping into objects. I'm at the breaking point of giving him away cause I don't know what more I can do.

He is a male Bombay Bay cat 2 years old.

Please I am desperate to find a solution, cause its making my mental health worse then it was.

thank you for all solutions

Adult male cat (not fixed) Not hissing or growling, seems to be trilling at female kitten.

So as the title suggests I adopted a kitten, and my room mate has a very docile adult male cat. He’s 12 years old, not neutered. The kitten is female, less than a year, (not fixed yet, I literally just got it, as it was living in a pile of garbage near my house)The adult makes chirping sounds and then smells the kitten, but then he seems like he’s going for it’s neck or something, and the kitten wants nothing to do with him. Is he just trying to…like parent it? Or is malicious?

Edit: he’s an indoor cat.

Left my dog without her safe space

My dog is 2 years old, and she's always enjoyed being under the bed. Recently (this past week) we had to get rid of the bed that she's used to laying under. And now she doesn't want to eat, doesn't play much and overall seems down. I already called the carpenter to see if he can modify another one of our beds so that she can lay under it but I'm worried that it's not going to be the same for her.

Has anybody had experience with getting rid of your pets safe space?

New cat anxiety

Hello, cat people of Reddit.

My girlfriend brought home a cat recently, she's about 1 year old. She's very chill and hides in every dark place she can find.

She was a stray cat, hasn't been washed yet, and her vet visit isn't until tomorrow.

For that reason, I've gotten quite anxious about the hygiene of this whole thing. I feel like even touching the same place she has will infect me with parasites ,or something.

I know I'm overreacting a bit, but I can't help being anxious about it.

Any advice, or words to ease my axniety would be more than welcome.

Roommate YELLING at dogs till 12 pm for being perverts, refuses to get them fixed.

Hi yall, I live with my roommate and his four dashunds, (Three boys, one girl). And the two boy dogs (The other one is the girl dog's son) are CONSTANTLY fighting over her. To the point where they have to stay in their cages constantly. I get pissy with pets sometimes, I get it, but he -literally- screams at the top of his lungs at them until 12 pm whenever they growl or something. It's making him miserable, it's making me miserable, and it's making the dogs miserable. I know this sounds more like a people issue, but is there something I can do about it? I don't have a door so I hear him screaming from when I wake up til I go to bed. Help?

Looking for recommendations for things to buy for a first time cat owner!

Hey everyone,

I've always wanted a pet, but have been scared of the responsibility because I wasn't financially ready, until now.

I'm looking to find a cat, but I'm not sure what all I should buy before I adopt. I also am not aware of what brands of anything are to be trusted or not, such as foods.

I can easily Google but I'd rather have real people tell me their experiences, good and bad.

Kitten Losing Bottom Canines

Hey,

My 4-month-old kitten bit my dog

I’m extremely worried because I know cat bites can be super infectious for humans. The wound is very shallow and not dripping blood. It broke through the skin, but it’s very much just a surface wound. Should I take my dog to the vet immediately? Or can I wait it out until tomorrow morning?

My cat meows CONSTANTLY when my partner is away and gets aggressive, but wants nothing to do with him when he's home. Now my partner thinks I'm losing it.

The cat is almost 6 months old and we adopted him when he was about 2 months old. He's neutered. No kids and no other pets.

I work from home and my partner works two days a week away from home. From the second, and I literally mean the second, my partner leaves until the time he gets back, the cat spends every waking moment meowing. No exaggeration. Literally THOUSANDS of times per day.

Because I work from home, this has caused a huge issue with me. Not only is it affecting my work, but it's driving me absolutely mad. But when my partner is home, the cat is not only quiet as can be, but also shows zero interest in our company. It's like he is content being in the same room as us but never wants any physical affection.

Even worse is that I literally can't be alone in the same room as this cat because he constantly lunges at my faces and head and tries to bite me. Again, I've tried every discipline measure I can find online and nothing breaks this behavior. He also doesn't do this shit when my partner is home.

After months of dealing with this and trying literally every solution I've found online, and having it only get worse and worse, I'm about ready to rehome this cat. But my partner, because he doesn't deal with this, isn't ready. He thinks the cat is an angel. He thinks I'm losing it (which, to be fair, I am...but not for the reasons he thinks). I'm losing my sanity over this cat.

And, yeah, for a bit I did think I was somehow the issue. But then I remembered that I've had 13 cats in my life, most of which I raised from kittens, and NONE of them behaved like this. None of them were this aggressive, this vocal, or this insane. So, no, I don't think it's me. It's this demonic cat.

I'm losing it here. I have never in my four decades of living experienced anything like this, and it's becoming a daily struggle. Nothing I've done works. I've never disliked a cat more than this one and I don't know what else to do.

Feeling bad for my dog

So my parents split up about two years ago now, father going to an apartment & mother and sister a house. The family dog, who’s 11 years old now, stayed with mom so he’d have more room.

Here’s the thing: my dog does not like my mother nearly as much as he does my dad. My dad was the dog’s “person,” and now they’re separated. On top of that, my mom doesn’t take good care of him- rarely taking him on walks or to see other dogs or family members or to ride in the car; his quality of life has declined so much over these past 2 years and I feel so so so bad for him. His activity level is close to none and he definitely misses my dad. He is super happy when he gets to see him, and my dad misses him too.

I truly think he has dog depression and don’t know what to do. I guess there’s nothing I can do, I’m mostly just looking for some sympathy or comfort tbh.

My cat, Loki is sick

Hello! My name is Stefan and I need your help.

My pet, Loki is almost back to normal.

2 weeks ago he had an accident, left tighbone almost ripped in half and I had to get him surgery I didn't have money but I managed to raise money from my friends and familly. First operation was succesful where they implanted a small plaque, price was 350$ US Now, after 10 days, he needs another surgery so they remove the plaque.

I'm a student, I don't have that money. I don't live in America, I'm from Europe, Romania. I tried starting a fundraising on most of the sites available, I didn't managed to do it.

I don't know what to do, any advice?

I’m at my breaking point with my cat.

I have no idea what to do. I’ve had him for about 5 years. Adopted him at 8 months old, along with another (slightly older) cat.

He’s a menace. He won’t stop bullying the other cat. He chases her around but didn’t know when to stop playing. She’ll hiss and run away and hide, but that won’t stop him. It’s obvious she does not want to “play”, and it seems like he’s hunting her sometimes.

He chews on plastic bags, even when I do my absolute best to keep them away from him. I try not to keep them in the house, and the bags I do keep, I try to keep far out of his reach or hidden. He finds them anyway. He then throws up the plastic that he’s eaten.

He wakes me and my husband up every single night. No matter what I do, he finds a way. I shut the door, he claws at it all night. He’ll yell all night. I open the door, he claws at the mattress and knocks absolutely everything off the counters and dressers. He has scratching pads (both horizontal and vertical) all over the house to use, but he still claws at the bed to wake us up. I haven’t had a full night of sleep in months.

We can’t open any windows in the house because he’ll climb up the screens and damage them. I’ve seen him nearly fall out the window.

I’ve tried everything. I took him to the vet about the pica and they couldn’t find anything wrong. I play with him often to try to tire him out. He’s free-feed so hunger isn’t the problem. I’ve tried pheromone spray. I can’t handle him anymore and I don’t know what to do. It’s at the point where it’s giving me panic attacks.

Please, any advice you all have would be appreciated. I love this cat to pieces but I’m at my wit’s end.

Can my cat and dog become friends?

My cat(F) is 10 months old and my dog (labrador- M) is almost 5 years old. They just tolerate each other and usually ignore each others presence. They don’t mind being in the same room but never interact. On the other hand my cat plays a lot with my smaller dog. He’s a 1 year old maletese(M).

I realise him being the same size as her makes her more comfortable with him but I would also eventually want my labra and her to become friends. I’ve tried introducing them to each slowly and getting them to play together but nothing worked.

Will they ever get along? Does anyone has suggestions how? Any advice would be appreciated

Scared for introducing dog to possible kitten

My family and I have applied to adopt this kitten from a rescue, he’s four months old. We are going to meet him on Sunday at the adoption event to see if he’s a good fit or not, or if we connect well. The rescue said the little dude is great with both cats and dogs. We have a two year old German Shepherd, which is why I’m a bit nervous. Because of size and how she’d react. I’ve been reading on proper ways to slowly introduce a kitten or cat to your dog to prepare myself, but I still can’t help but be scared lol.

She has been around cats before, but not many. The first time she was around a cat was when we were on vacation a few months ago (followed safety guidelines) and our dogsitter had a foster kitten. She had no aggressive intent towards the cat, she was just extremely curious. She got a little too close for the kitty’s comfort though and the cat wacked her with its paw and she was cautious and hesitant around the kitten the rest of the time lol.

The second time was just while we were on a walk and some person was out front in their backyard with their cat and we were just walking by. But I don’t know, I feel like it’s a vastly different situation to introduce a cat to a dog at home. I imagine that it would be very stressful so I’m a bit stressed about introduction...

If anyone has any advice, I’d love to hear some :) and also, how long did it take for you to introduce them & how long did it take for them to get used to one another?

edit: I also want to add a reason I’m a bit anxious about this is because of how it’s suggested that their first face-to-face should be separate, such as being able to see each other between a gate or screen door. Luna (our GSD) met part of our family’s new puppy last weekend for the first time while they were both in crates. Family wasn’t ready for them to meet outside of the crates yet though, so our father offered to bring Luna outside so the puppy could roam for a bit. Luna didn’t like that he was inside while she had to be outside where she could see him. Not aggressive barks, but she has a very loud bark. She wanted to meet the dog which is why she was barking, but because she was outside she was not happy since the puppy wasn’t with her. Or, at least, that’s what I’m assuming. But I know it wasn’t an aggressive bark regardless. But because of the barking, I’m worried she’d bark at the kitten if she was separated like that? Does anyone have similar experience with this and what you did to make the introduction process easier?

Advice needed on spaying

Hello, please don’t tear me apart as I know the normal decision is to spay your dog.

I have a 4yo female German shepherd who is never by herself.

Just some food for thought on the breeding topic as we are definitely not looking to breed her. she’s never left outside alone or in contact with other dogs unsupervised and when she is the other dog is fixed we only have a few dog friends she plays with, if some rando dog somehow got in our back yard it’s not like we wouldn’t know and resolve the situation as again she’s never left unsupervised also we have double layered fences so the event even occurring is highly unlikely.

It was never the plan not to spay her until right around 6 months (when you would start to think about it) her mother was spayed and died at 2yo due to complications during the procedure.

I am petrified to make a decision that could lead to that though am also petrified for her to end up getting pyometra. When I research both issues all I am reading is yeah both things can happen. People full of regret for bringing their dogs to get altered then receiving a phone call with bad news and people who didn’t alter wishing they had.

Obviously by the lack of alone time my dog has she’s my and my families world.

How to make such a decision? Does anyone have experiences they can share?

Pregnant and starting to hate my cat

When I got my kitten I was told he was about 3 months old, I later found out he was actually barely a month. The first day he came home with me he immediately started exploring, he was such a nice cute kitty but as he started growing he became a completely different cat, he started bitting me and it was not playful kind of biting. Whenever he got the zoomies he would stare at me with his dilated pupils, ears pinned back, heavy breathing and I would usually see him getting prepared to bite me so I would try to distract him. I’ve tried Everything to get him to stop, whenever he was being nice i would give him treats, I yell NO and clap when he bites me, I’ll put him away for about 10 - 15 minutes and when I get him he is chill for a while then goes back to the same thing. I was told neutering would change his behavior, and it kind of did because he doesn’t run around as much but now his biting habit is even worse. ( he is now about 8 months old) He will be playing then come bite my arm of leg and run away, he will completely attach himself to me so it’s hard to get him to stop, then I’ll put him away from me and he will come back to bite even stronger (it’s not just me he is the same way towards my husband) he has plenty of toys, a big cat tower, scratching posts, etc. He loves playing in his litter box and lately he has been sleeping a lot, he likes to get inside his crate/cage which I leave open, but Everytime he is not sleeping he’s biting. He knows it’s wrong to do it because he runs away when he does it, just like when he does other stuff he’s not supposed to and I tell him no he will meow back at me then run away. Before getting neutered he used to cuddle with me and sleep next to me, now he does neither of those, the only time he lets me pet him is when he wakes up he follows me to the bathroom purring, he also cries in the morning for me to wake up. Another problem is that whenever my niece (1 yr old) comes over he will also claw and attack her, he hides then bites her, runs away then comes back to bite her. I think that he will probably bite or attack my baby when she is born. I don’t wanna give him up for adoption because I’m scared of him going to a bad family. I also don’t know if he has gotten more aggressive because of the neutering, the pregnancy, his age, or he’s just a mean cat that will never change. I’ve had plenty of cats when I was younger and have never had this type of problem with them, they would play bite but that’s about it, as soon as they were told No or moved away they would stop.

Glaze dissolved off of “pet safe” bowl

I bought these cute ceramic pet bowls off of Amazon they said they were lead free, cadmium free, microwave safe, and pet safe for food and water. My cat hasn’t been feeling well and today I went to wash his bowls and noticed the bowl that had water in it was no longer smooth on the inside and it seemed all of the glaze had dissolved! Cat is stressed constantly and I don’t know what else to do

  • clean litter every day
  • access to cat fountain & fresh water
  • play with teaser 1x per day for about 30 mins
  • catnip 1x per day
  • treats 1x per day
  • plenty of hiding spaces
  • regular vet check ups
  • put on cat TV for him occasionally (birds)
  • windows for him to look out of
  • affectionate attention
  • CBD oil 2x daily in food
  • exclusive wet diet with occasional cooked whole meat mixed in

I’m at my wits end. We adopted this cat a few months ago and while he seems sociable, he does not like affection at all. He will jump out of our arms, avoid being close to our hands & faces, bite & rough play a lot, obsessively groom himself, and seems to not want anything to do with us. I got this cat for my PTSD diagnosis and I need something affectionate as I can’t be cuddly with people. I feel like an asshole for wanting to take him back but I’m honestly bending over backwards to make this cat love me back but he won’t. I grew up owning cats and all of them loved being held, cuddled, purred, and follow me around. Idk if he was abused by his previous owners as we got him as an adult with no history on him. I’m looking for some advice, I really appreciate it

Do you let your dog/pet lick your face?

I was talking to my neighbors the other day and they seemed to think their dog licking even their arm or hand is a bit disgusting... Meanwhile I get face kisses by my dog all the time! She's young (1 year old) so maybe that's why she doesn't smell but I can't imagine refusing her kisses, since she doesn't really like to be petted or cuddled otherwise.

Can you leave young cats in a pen in your house overnight

I'm fostering and some nights I want to sleep over my girlfriends house so our relationship isn't ruined over cats. I have a big dog pen that's secured on top, food and water, litter, and bedding inside. During the day we play and I give them meds. I don't work so I get them all day. Is it ok to leave them in the pen? Like they can't get out and if they did I wouldn't even hear it if I was sleeping at home since the kitchen is downstairs and I sleep upstairs.

Maltese please help

Maltese is slight overweight, around 5years of age. Suddenly frothing at the nose and tongue turned purple. It happened once before and we brought him to a vet. And the vet said there was water in the lungs, and gave him a jab and that’s it.

But now He’s frothing again and tongues purple but the jab the vet just gave him only worked for awhile. And now they kept saying they wanna do more tests, X-rays and shit. And the costs are skyrocketing, yet they still say that there’s NOTHING WRONG with the dogs health. If there’s nothing wrong why would the dog just froth like that??? Does anyone know what’s happening?

What to do with this lost cat?..

I found a cat in my apartment staircase, it can't get out through the entrance so it could be that the owner of this cat lives in my building unless it sneaked itself in when someone was leaving the building.

It's almost night time and i don't want to knock on everybody's door... also i assume the owner would have noticed unless he didn't come back home yet.

It's not wearing a collar and it could have been in the staircase all day, should i let it in my apartment? I've been also thinking about letting it out through the front door but i feel there is a higher chance that the cat left someone's apartment rather then the cat sneaked itself in while someone was leaving the bloc so i don't want to do that yet.

Any ideas what i could do?

Should we get a dog?

Hi! I am new around here, so forgive me if my question sounds clumsy. To provide some context for it: I live in a big house with my mom, my dad, my twin siblings, a cat named Tigresa, and a collie named Winkie. Recently, Winkie had breast cancer.

Luckily for her, it wasn't as serious as it could have been, and the vet removed it successfully. She is in great shape now but is still struggling. She had been suffering from the effects of cancer for a while before we noticed something was wrong.

My dad thought it was her leg, so we stopped taking her on walks, and, after the surgery, we didn't give her baths for a while either. She had reacted badly to the products the pet shops were using before, and we didn't feel like we would be able to wash her at home without damaging the wound.

After her recovery, we bathed her, then traveled for two days after a while, and she ate just dog food during this time. When we came back, her fur looked stunning! This whole process has been a big wake-up call for us, and we resolved to be better owners to Winkie. She still has a long way to go, though.

And thus, this brings us to the subject of this post: my mom and my dad think it would be a good idea to get another Collie. They believe that if we get a puppy that looks like Winkie, we could trigger her maternal instincts so she would heal better and faster. I am not sure this is a good idea, so I wanted to see if you guys could give me feedback on that.

THANKS!

I really need to know I’m not the only person who has gone through this

This is sad but my cat died today..or yesterday I’m not sure when. The morning I went to knot fest (Saturday) he threw up a couple times and did not seem well at all, but I knew he wasn’t feeling well haven taken him to the vet a couple times and it’s never been anything serious so I thought I could wait till the next day to get him checked out again. I got back from knot fest and noticed his food that I poured at 5am yesterday hadn’t been touched at all. I thought my dads roommate let him outside and he got lost or picked up. The guy said he never let him out and hadn’t seen him. The worst part about the whole thing is I didn’t look around for him enough. I guess the last thing on my mind was that he could be dying and I feel so shitty. I was back for a whole two days and had no idea he was either dead or dying downstairs in my basement. I could have saved him if I looked around more and paid attention. I feel that if I know other people have been through something like this I would feel better. I also needed to vent.

Cat leading me into the bathrooms

I recently moved into an old craftsman home with 2 cats and a dog. Recently one of my cats keeps staying around me and meowing and any time I get up he leads me to the bathroom and jumps on the counter. If the upstairs bathroom is closed he will run all the way down the stairs and lead me to that bathroom

At first I thought he wanted me to run the tap so he could play with/drink the water but he didn’t really care about it. I thought he wanted attention so I would pet him and stay with him awhile and still he would just walk around the counter.

His food and water are full and cat box is clean so I don’t understand why he keeps leading me into the bathrooms. Anyone have an idea of why this may be happening?

Cat Developing Behavior Problems from New Dog

My girlfriend has a flame point siamese named Felix who's about two years old. He's an exclusively indoor cat who's always been an incredibly friendly goofball who's a little too smart and curious for his own good. He's always been fine with being picked up, held, light roughhousing, etc. The only "behavior issues" he's ever had are being incredibly vocal for extended periods of time, getting himself into precarious positions due to the aforementioned curiosity, and he's also started to attempt to open doors in an effort to get outside.

Now that my girlfriend has bought a new house and has much more room, she and I are planning on getting a dog, and this weekend we had a trial home visit with one before we're able to formally adopt her next week. She's a medium/small Aussie mix, incredibly well behaved, not at all hyperactive, and very well socialized. When she and Felix first met she was very good about not attempting to chase or otherwise harass him. There was a little bit of hissing if she got too close, but overall he seemed more curious about her, and would often forgo high positions on tables or counters to follow her around and watch her. They weren't snuggling on the couch by the end or anything, but we never had to pry them apart or deal with any aggression from Felix.

The dog returned to her training program on Sunday leaving my girlfriend and Felix back at home today while she works. She texted me this morning to tell me that Felix hissed at her today (literally the first time this has ever happened), and that when trying to get him down from a high shelf he's not allowed to be on he attempted to lunge for her face. This has us both fairly concerned. We want to head off any potential behavioral problems before they result in someone potentially getting hurt, and Felix becoming an angry, aggressive, generally unhappy cat. We've been doing some searching around and seen recommendations for Feliway diffusers. We're also going to start making more of a point to have dedicated interaction time with him, getting new feeder toys we'll rotate to help keep him stimulated, and also finally get him a cat tree (she never had room in her old apartment for one). Are we overreacting? Not doing enough? Need to do something different?

help. cat spraying and yowling

Let’s call my cat Winnie. She is about two years old and I believe she is a Russian white.

I found her at my parent’s house about 4 months ago. Winnie is very friendly with humans, but it was obviously that she was very malnourished. She was very very skinny so I took her back to my apartment (about 20 minutes away). I took her to the vet to get tested/checked for any illnesses. They said she was all clear. I also got her vaccines up to date.

Fast forward to present day. She has put on some weight and has an appointment to get spayed on October 8th. She still seems to be in good health…besides one thing.

She sprays and yowls constantly. During the day, during the night, if I’m with her, and when I leave. She seems so stressed and I don’t know what to do. I play with her constantly, she always has a filled water bowl, and eats regularly scheduled meals. I empty her litter box twice a day. I am gone for approximately 30 hours a week (mainly for college) but besides that I am in my room with her.

I have tried Feliway spray and Thunder Wunders calming chews, but they have only helped a little.

My roommates have two other cats. The one, Benny (2 year old male) she can’t stand. The other, Chili (1 year old male) she used to not like but now they seem neutral with each other. I always keep Benny and Winnie separate, but sometimes I bring Chili and Winnie together.

About once a day, I’ll put Benny in my room and let Winnie roam the kitchen/living room for about half an hour. Chili and Winnie will interact occasionally.

I don’t know if it’s foo crowded for her and she wants more space. My current apartment is about medium sized and five people live here. The only other pets are Benny and Chili.

I will be moving back to my parent’s next week. The house is way bigger and my room will be triple the size. There will be four people total living there and a very chill dog who will be kept on a separate floor from Winnie.

I’m scared she will still spray and yowl even after we move to a bigger space and after she gets spayed.

Any tips on how to help Winnie, and what may be the cause of her stress?

tl;dr My cat is spraying and yowling constantly without an obvious cause. It probably isn’t a medical issue either. How do I help her?

Pet Odor Control for Dog

I have a 3 year old sharpei/pit mix. I bathe him once a month at home with hemp odor eliminating shampoo and he also gets groomed every now and then. It never fails that after 2-3 days he smells SO bad again. I’m looking for a vitamin or something to add to his daily diet that can help control this. I use quick wipes and spray occasionally but I know over doing it can make it worse. It’s gotten really bad that we are officially a smelly dog household. Any help would be appreciated.

Tips for an anxious indoor cat when I’m driving

Hi all! I was wondering if you have any tips for an anxious cat when driving. My cat will continuously cry, pee and poo in his carrier if I take him anywhere in the car. It doesn’t matter how long or short the journey is. The problem is really bad because he will start biting himself and when I open the carrier his fur comes off in clumps which is absolutely heartbreaking. It is not my driving, I actually slow down when I have him in the car. He just hates the movements in general. He put us both in danger once when he managed to get out of the carrier and jump on my lap whilst I was driving. He tried to jump out the window. It gives me anxiety when I have to take him anywhere and means I only do if absolutely necessary.

Urgent kitten situation: advice needed

I'm super sorry if this isn't the right sub, I'm just kind of desperate on what to do in this situation ^^:

My friend J messaged me asking for advice, but I'm not super sure on what to do in this situation so I'm looking for some advice on hereJ's mom got a kitten, who J has been calling Rudy. (J lives with their grandparents.) However J's mom couldn't keep Rudy, and dropped him off at J's grandparents house, asking them to cat-sit til she got back from somewhere. Turns out J's mom wasn't actually planning on coming back, and just wanted to leave the kitten there so she didn't have to take care of him. J called her asking what to do with the kitten, and J's mom replied saying to just "put him out".

The kitten is way to young to just be left out on the streets like that. He's a male, J estimated around a month or two old maybe(?), but it's hard to tell. Not visibly malnourished or sick. He refuses to eat anything but wet cat food, which J has been feeding him, along with water to drink. He's been staying in their room, but their grandparents aren't keen on keeping him, so they need to get rid of him soon.

J has access to general cat food and necessities because they already have two cats (who get along with Rudy decently.) My family can't take Rudy in, due to the fact we already have an extremely territorial cat aswell as three small dogs. My dad is going to ask if any of his co-workers can take the cat in, but we aren't sure of what's going to happen.

Any advice possible, about taking care of the kitten, getting the kitten a home, etc is greatly appreciated!! I'll link a picture of the cat here

Really want to adopt a stray cat but need some advice (long, sorry)

Hi everyone,

There’s an adorable cat living in a courtyard near my apartment complex. She comes by in the early evening every night and stays around for several hours. Some people have started feeding her, but there’s been talk in the building of someone adopting her (we live in New York City and colder nights are already here). I’m sad at the prospect of taking her away from the outdoors that she seems to like, but she also seems to be 5-6 months old and thus probably doesn’t have any experience living outside in the winter and would likely be happier inside in the cold. Since it seems like a given that she will be adopted by somebody, I would love to take her in. I’d plan on trying to walk her on a leash and harness in a nearby park on a daily or every-other-day basis if she likes it, so that she has a balance of indoors and outdoors.

She’s really pretty friendly and will run up to me, roll over and nudge her head against me, let me pet her for a few seconds, then run off a few feet and come right back to repeat the routine. She’s a little skittish around humans but clearly not scared of them and seems to enjoy getting pets. When she sees dogs, she arches her back but doesn’t hiss or move away: she holds her ground and stares at them. She’s such a brave, fierce, playful little cat!!

Since I first saw her, I was planning on watching her and seeing if she could fend for herself before bringing her in, but after a conversation with other people in my building today, it seems like several people want to adopt her imminently and that timeline seems to be moving up. Since it seems like she will be adopted by someone in my building, I’d rather be the one to do it since I’ll be taking her outside on walks.

I have two main concerns: 1. How do I get her safely/ happily up to my 10th floor apartment? All the websites I’ve seen on how to invite a stray cat into your home suggest leaving food outside your door and letting them in when they meow. Obviously, that’s not possible with an apartment. 2. I know that if you get scratched/ bitten by a stray cat, you need to go to a doctor and there’s a chance that the cat is killed for a brain biopsy. Obviously I would do anything to avoid that, and I would worry that by bringing her into my apartment (especially during the transition period when she’s pretty likely to scratch or bite a bit as she gets acclimated and we get to know each other), I inadvertently put her in danger. How much would I have to worry if she scratches or bites me?

I’d love any guidance on these questions or any general advice.

She doesn’t have a collar and of course I would take her to the vet as soon as I could get an appointment and check her for a chip. She definitely seems to have fleas too.
