How to keep a cat from getting up the bed and waking his owner up??

Hey guys, this question isn't about my cat, but rather about a friend's. For context, she lives in an apartment with one room and has a 3mo cat named Olly.

To be direct, she is currently struggling with keeping Olly as he's a very active and clingy cat. The issue at hand is, during the night, Olly wakes up frequently, mainly to go to the toilet, and sometimes, climbs on her bed and lays on her, often after going to the toilet, thus waking her up. Because of this she hasn't been able to sleep properly since she got him and has been under a lot of stress, because of this, she is considering giving him up.

Although she is considering that, we two and her bf are trying to find ways of solving this without resorting to giving Olly up. She also can't use a cage due to spatial reasons and because she doesn't want to lock him. Do you guys have any idea on how to solve this?

My relationship with my cats has changed since having a baby, and I need some encouragement.

So, I have two cats. One of them, Brother, is and has always been a handful. I love him and his sister, Toots, soooo much and have never ever done anything but adore them. Brother has a problem with marking in the house (he is neutered), and we can't have anything like clothes, rugs, etc. touch the ground because he pees all over them. Everywhere we've lived he has peed and we have always dealt with it. Even if there's nothing on the floor he still pees. We've had them for over ten years after finding them wandering the street alone at night as tiny kittens.

Fast forward to May of this year when I had my son. Now, I know it's common for women to feel different about their pets when they become mothers--some evolutionary thing, I guess. I just felt like I had much less time to love on the cats and give them all the attention they've always been given. Up until then, they were my babies. But I also started to feel like I don't want my son to grow up in a house that has cat pee. The last straw came when Brother started peeing in my son's room. I cannot let this happen. So, we have decided to make our indoor cats outdoor cats.

We started with a cat door leading to an enclosure my husband built outside for them, complete with high tunnels, heated cubbies, a bench, perches, etc. They gradually spent more and more time in there, and less time inside. They still come inside but are confined, when they do, to one room in the house. Once we get their outdoor vaccinations (on Monday), we're going to open their enclosure so they can leave it to explore the outdoors. Then, they'll be outdoor all the time and not come inside anymore.

Another consideration in this decision is that my husband is allergic to them and has suffered with that for over ten years because we love them so much. But now we've made this decision and are sticking to it. My heart hurts though. I hold back tears some days because I don't want them to think they are unloved or thought of a nuisances, or that we don't like them anymore. I know they enjoy it outside, which helps me to not feel so bad. I guess I'm just realizing that we'll never nap together on the couch, like we used to. And they'll never be cozied up near a roaring fire, or hang out with me in the kitchen while I cook, or run around while we listen to music--or a hundred other things. And now when I see sweet cat posts on reddit I feel this deep sadness. I feel like I failed them. But like I said, I know they like it out there. It's been raining and windy lately though, and what if they're afraid? Especially at night, I worry about them being outside.

I guess I'm just hoping to hear from others who either understand or can show me some understanding and support. Thank you for reading this.

How do you keep a kitten from going upstairs?

I have a 4 foot tall fence which I thought would be somewhat difficult for a kitten to climb up so she doesn't go upstairs where I have my Shetland Sheepdog, but she can just walk up it like a little monkey. I was thinking if I put something that's about a foot tall zip tied to the top of the fence at a 90 degree angle where half of it is hanging over each side of the fence then she wouldn't be able to climb the horizontal surface. But I'm having trouble finding something about this width- is this a good idea or do you have a better idea? Thanks.

Moving to a new environment with cats

Hello! I have 3 cats who are used to going outdoors whenever they please, but my family is moving to a new house with a pond in the back yard with no fence… very scary! My dog will have to go on a leash outside now but I have no idea what I should do about my cats. I would like to keep them inside but I know that’s the last thing they’d want, any advice? Thanks

Best muzzle to keep American Eskimo dog from eating toxic stuff?

Before you say “why don’t you just pay attention to your dog” etc, I’m recovering from a severe injury, live alone, and can’t walk for another three months.

I live in a gated area but I can’t control where my dogs go or get to them fast enough when they do get something in their mouth. I can walk in small increments on crutches but that’s it. I wake up really early and am up hours before my neighbors and my pups would have an accident by the time someone came to walk them.

So I need a muzzle. I tried a fabric one but I’d used it before the surgery and he could get it off easily. I’m thinking a hard muzzle, but reading reviews on Amazon make them all seem like crap.

Kitten will only use litterbox when confined to bedroom(2 cat household)

We have a 3 year old fixed male. In September we brought home a 15wk old kitten (male also fixed). We did a slow intro and they got along fairly quickly. Little to no litter problems from the kitten. Then 3 weeks ago the kitten underwent surgery for a spontaneous intussusception (intestinal problem). They had to be split up again for 2 weeks while he healed. During this time the kitten stayed in our bedroom and uses the litterbox with 0 issues.

2 days ago we let the kitten out again and he has pooped outside or near the downstairs litterbox 4 times. We put him back in the bedroom today (solo) and he pooped right in the box. We don't have a huge house just a regular townhouse.

We have 1 regular box and 1 litter robot upstairs and 1 regular box downstairs.

The 3yo also stopped letting the kitten play with him like before the surgery. But he does not attack the kitten but hisses more.

The 3yo is not guarding the downstairs box.

Anything we can do?? It really upsets our 3yo to not be in our bedroom too because that's his main "spot".

The cats do not avoid eachother, they will sit together with us on the couch, the kitten wants to play again with the older cat but we can see the older cat is gradually warming up to it again but not the way they were before.

Dos the smell of cats scare mice away?

I live in a lowdown, old, and dirty apartment building which is frequently visited by mice. I really don't like the little f*ckers and so I set out various fatal traps when they invade our little room.

Back a few years ago we lived in another nasty little building with mice, and I was bitching about it to a neighbor and he half joking asked me if I wanted to borrow his cat for the weekend. I gratefully declined the offer (because his cat, Saffron, was the second-dumbest housecat I ever met, and I was unwilling to be responsible for him lest he walk out the window or something). So I never found out if it was true that the mere whiff of cat aroma scares away rodents.

Returning to now, we got mice. We also got three pet birds, so having our own cat is out of the question. But I've started to wonder: would a cat visiting our apartment for a day or three lay down a scent that would linger to unnerve and frighten any more mice from trying to move in on me for a while, without making the room reek of litterbox?

Like I said up there in the last paragraph, we have pet birds so no way are we getting a kitty kat for keeps, but if having a nice friendly polite cat visit us for two or three days (and maybe catch a few mice for his troubles) makes the place too scary smelling for mice, we might make arrangements.

Should we reconsider pet ownership completely?

Hi everyone,

Would love to get your feedback on this petition. I know it's pretty extreme, but should we be more concerned about the future of pet ownership, especially in relation to animal welfare and climate change?

Just as it appears that animal rights are more respected than ever - that fewer animals are subject to the whims, appetites and bloody amusement of humans - pet ownership is undergoing exponential growth.

With a scaling market for animal ownership in the home, what questions should we be asking of this burgeoning industry? What is its effect on the climate? What is its impact on the lives of animals who, behind front doors, live under the thumb of human masters.

Would love feedback on this petition, focusing on increasing the debate around pets: their impact on the climate and our impact on pets' own welfare: https://change.org/pets-and-climate-change

Thanks!

Advice for what to do with my noisy dog in a new apartment?

First off, I want to say the backstory for this is a little heavy. If you aren’t in a position to read something like that then please look elsewhere, take care of yourself before you take care of someone online 💙

We got our dog seven(ish) years ago when he was a couple months old and he’s lived with me and my parents his entire life. My mom would work, I went to school, and my dad worked on-and-off from home, so he was always at the house. My dog has rarely ever been in a situation where he was home alone.

But, in September of this year my dad passed away after losing his battle with cancer. It was an incredibly hard time in both me and my moms lives, and we wanted to put a lot of it behind us by moving out of our house and into an apartment for just over a year, with hopes to move back into a house afterward.

My mom and I are both marvel nerds so we went to see the new Spider-Man movie as soon as we could, which was an 11:40 pm showing. When we return home we find that someone has taped a letter to our door saying that our dog constantly barks whines and howls while we are away, and they threatened to take it up with the main office if it continues.

We knew our dog was dramatic and would bark at someone if they knocked on our door at our house, or he’d whine at us if he saw us leaving, or he’d make a whole lot of noise if we were coming home after being gone a while (he’s very excitable). But we had no idea he was as bad as the author of the letter said he was, and now we don’t know what to do. My mom still works and I’m going to be seeking employment very soon, which means we can’t be home with him all the time. He’d always had someone home when my dad was alive but unfortunately that isn’t the case anymore.

The author of the letter did offer the ideas of either daycare or a sitter, but neither of those things would work if we wanted to go and do something at night or on special occasions. And we don’t really have anyone that would be able to take him, either temporarily or during the time we are in our apartment.

Neither me or my mom want to get rid of our dog, we love him very very very much and it would kill us if we had to get rid of him because he cries when he misses us. I guess I’m just asking for advice or suggestions on what to do?

What weird things are your pets afraid of?

My puppy, he’s about 10 months and I recently discovered he is absolutely terrified of glasses. It’s doesn’t matter what kind. If he sees a pair of glasses in my hand he will literally run outside and will not come back in until he thinks they’re gone even if I call him or try to bribe him with his favorite treat.

is it okay to sometimes leave my kitten alone in a room for 3-6 hours

i go out at night roughly 2-3 times a week, and dont come back until very late. throughout the day my kitten just roams around the house and plays etc but when im not home i have to leave him in my room because everyone else in the house is too busy to keep an eye on him, plus hes my kitten so hes my responsibility. is it okay to leave him alone for this long or will that disturb him psychologically?

i can hear him meowing as i leave :( and when i come back hes sitting by the door and just sprints out because hes so glad to be free again. i play with him everyday and only keep him in my room when im going out but i feel so bad abt it. obviously i leave food and water and some toys for him but he loves being around ppl and im worried that being left alone like this might make him depressed or something. sorry if this is a dumb question

Should I move my cat from my parents rural house to my city apartment?

Hi! Hope someone can give me some pointers on how to make this decision.

A few years back, when I was still living with my parents, I got a kitten. She's always been very 'wild', loves the outside, hunts, climbs the highest roofs, etc. But at also loves to cuddle and sleeps as close to you as possible in bed all night.

Over a year ago she became very scared and distant. it's like something traumatic happened to her. We got a new puppy. But it didn't start immediately when the pup got there. She doesn't want to come inside anymore. She will stand in front of the window miaowing. (for food or attention). There's a pretty big and comfortable separate room attached to the house she can enter at all times, where we don't come very often. It's the only place she goes, apart from a tiny guesthouse in the yard. So at least she still has comfortable inside & outside living. Not too bad.

But when I was housesitting, I stayed in that separate room, which is basically her house, and noticed she was áll over me all the time. Just like before. She was so happy and cuddly, started playing around me like she used to do, get zoomies, she left me mice again. Purring uncontrollably. All the things she stopped doing.

She also started coming inside the house again, but only to run up to my bedroom, to sleep together. You do have to guide her because she won't make the trip by herself. Every sound and movement in the house startles her. If you pick her up inside the house and move her around she'll literally scream. She has to be in control of where she goes. Only reason she follows is because she trusts that I will open and shut the bedroom door for her and it will be just us.

We thought she would come around & just had to get used to the new dog but we're not sure if that's it. She doesn't run from him, she's even starting to join our night walks, like she did with our old dog. But it's obvious she finds him way too energetic, so she likes to keep her distance.

Now, I thought about taking her with me. I have my own place with a yard. It would be just the two of us, like she enjoyed so much. There would be nothing to scare her and she can get the affection she clearly misses a lot. She wouldn't have to be so stressed all the time. Seriously, she has crazy eyes.

The thing is that she's used to rural living, big yard and house, trees and grasslands. I do have my own ground level apartment with a yard, but it is in a (small) city. There's lots of other houses and gardens around us, and also many other cats. (she's used to other cats, but not this many in a small area). My place is way smaller. Now this isn't so bad in the winter and fall when she's inside most of the time, but other times of the year she's used to an amazing yard with all these spots and sheds and possibilities to go in and out as she pleases.

Should I wait longer for her to maybe get comfortable again, or should I try my place? I don't want to stress her out even more.

My family keep beating our dog

Hello. We have a female Yorkshire in our family (me, my father and my brother). She was born 6 months ago. My father and my brother often hit her to discipline her. I talked with them multiple times that this is not the correct way to discipline a pet but the thing is we are not even at home to discipline her nicely and correctly and she gets mad when she is alone in the darkness for hours so she starts destroying wallpapers or toilet papers and peeing where she should not pee. Before we get a pet, I used to tell them that this family is not a appropriate place for pets (also because they hate animals and enjoy watching them die like sadists) but they insist buying one to “complete the family”. Long story short, they beat her since she was 1 month old till now, which is pissing me off, I often wake up because of her screams. My family think super old and beating is the only thing they can think of. I’m not sure what to do, give my dog to someone I know without telling my family. Give her to those animal support area things. When I’m hearing her scream, I want to throw her out of the window to insta kill her to stop her daily suffering. I’m really confused right now please suggest me alternative ideas.

The thing wont' stop meowing and I'm not even giving him any attention. Wakes me up or just generally disruptive.

2 kittens, 3 litterboxes

Adopted 2 kittens from a shelter a few weeks ago. Black is older, like 6 months, Orange is the little one, about 3 months. Kept them in separate rooms at first, introduced them slowly, near food, the whole shebang. The younger, Orange leapt at friendship at the first opportunity. Black, was a little timid at first but got over it easily and they spend all day wrestling and playing now. Black is like 2 lbs bigger but Orange always starts the wrestling matches, despite no chance of winning them.

I observed their interactions carefully for any signs they were fighting, not playing. They're fine, they take turns chasing, etc. But chasing and wrestling is ALL they do. They don't ever cuddle or groom each other, it's just pounce and play. I was a little concerned about it but they started sitting near each other chill so I guess it's ok.

But here's the issue. Black has a strong prey drive. He will leap at any sound or moving thing. Sometimes Orange is that moving thing. Which works out when they both want to play, but when Lil Orange has to use the litter box, the scratching sound inevitably brings Black running and he pounces him. Poor baby can't poop in peace. I have 3 litter boxes, 2 downstairs, 1 upstairs, but they both tend to use the one in the room where I am. Lil Orange is now taking to pooping in corners because of how often he's been jumped while using the box. I did not buy 3 litter boxes for them to poop on the floors. I've intercepted Black a couple of times and shooed him away so Orange can poop in peace, but Orange is so jumpy at the box, he'll often run out of it anyway. I wanted to know if anyone has advice on either keeping Black from interfering in Orange's poop time or getting Orange to use one of the other boxes so he can go in peace.

I have to deal with being a shit person on top of losing my pet

Using a throw out because I am horrible:

About 2 weeks ago coincidentially my 2 closest friends pets (a cat and a dog) and my own (parrot) got sick at the same time. And I mean life threatening, ER-vet and clinic stay kinda sick. For all of our pets it didn't look well, they all had a pretty bad prognosis. We comforted each other best we could but we all feared the worst.

My bird did not make it and I had to bury him a week ago. My friends cat survived her operation against all odds and my other friends dog made a miracle recovery. Both can go home this week.

I know both animals for years and am really glad they did not die. I really like them even if that will sound not very convincing regarding my next sentence: when my friends are euphoric about their pets recovery I can't help feeling envious as I never did before in my life and I can't stand their joy. I struggle with the fact that I had to bury my beloved pet and they got so lucky. It feels so unfair to me and I really hate being alone with my sadness in the face of their relieve.

This is so ugly I feel even worse than I already do about my pets death. Just wanted to confess these horrible thoughts I have and vent a little.

Wallflower cat

I have a 10 year old cat who is maybe just introverted but I'm a little concerned about her. She's the oldest of the house and was our only pet until we got our 8 year old dog, then our 4 year old dog, and then our 3 year old cat. Everyone always hangs out together except my 10 yo cat. They sleep together, eat together, play together but she stays out of it. She loves cuddling with her people and occasionally plays with our other cat but other than that she's super antisocial. Is she okay?

Child hates their new kitten

Recently my mother got my cousin (9F) a new kitten. My cousin has been asking for a kitten for years and has even helped take care of my dad's 9 year old cat when she visits. Prior to getting her a kitten my mom came to me to for advice on how to proceed. We made sure her parent was okay with it, went over all the responsibilities and helped pick out the sweetest little guy. Well cousin called me today (3 days of having him) to say she doesn't want him anymore. Apparently he follows her around too often (this is the main complaint, the kitten is a bit clingy) she doesn't like getting up early (before school) to feed him, clean his litter box etc., she knew of all these responsibilities before hand. I gave her a week to think it over, and if she doesn't want him I'll take him of course which makes me a cat mom of 3 (slowly turning into a true cat lady lol). I'd love to have him here but I wanted to know if there is anything I can do or explain to her that would help in this situation. What do you guys think?

Should I Get Two Cats Now Or Wait?

So, I (19) am rehoming a cat this evening. His (still debating name's) owners are moving somewhere they can't keep pets.

After living in my own for two years (left home young) I have my own flat, a secure tenancy, and enough money to take care of a pet properly as well as myself.

He's 6 months old, however, and I'm on a part-time college course which means I'm out for long stretches at least twice a week. I was planning on getting another cat so he can have company, however there aren't any others in his current home.

Should I look for another young cat later or ASAP? I'm not sure if them both being in a new environment with me at the same time will be more stressful for them, as no one will be comfortable if that makes sense?

Cat goes outside of litter box sometimes :( Any advice is appreciated!

Hey all! I'm gonna try to provide the full timeline with as many details as possible.

My girlfriend has had her cat since she was a kitten (now ~6 years old). She moved across the country with her cat one year ago (we moved in together). Everything was fine for the first month or so, then she started peeing in a corner of one of the rooms downstairs on the carpet. The problem persisted almost daily for a week, so she gets taken to the vet for all the routine blood work and tests. Everything comes back normal and she's a healthy kitty. At this point we assumed it was stress from such a big move. Following the advice of what we read online, we purchased those plugin cat pheromone diffuses and put them around the house (still use them to this day) and moved her food bowl to the offending corner. We got her a new cat tree as well so she can have a new place to call her own.

After moving her food to the original corner, she then chose a new corner upstairs to begin peeing in. During this time it seemed she was mostly spraying and not unloading her bladder. We continue to thoroughly clean the area using the recommended (Nature's Miracle Urine Destroyer) and eventually the problem stops for about 6 or 7 months. All was good.

A couple months ago she began peeing in the upstairs corner again. My girlfriend caught her about to do it one day and yelled at her. It appears she got the point that she wasn't allowed to go in that corner, so she chose yet another new corner upstairs. The problem persists intermittently for a couple of months.

Continuing to follow advice online, she got a new litter box just last week and it was placed in the new corner. She began using it immediately without any issues.

This morning we woke up to hearing scratches on the carpet upstairs. I go up and find that she is now pooping on the carpet right outside of the bathroom that her original litter box is in.

Throughout the entire ordeal, she continued to use her litter box and now uses both the new and the old box to go number 1 and 2 on a daily basis. This is brand new behavior and she has never pooped outside the box. Prior to moving across the country she never went pee outside of her box. She is still playful and cuddly.

Now we are at our wits end. What are the next steps we can take?

Should I take my cat to my parents house when I leave for a week?

My cat, kiki, is quite the old lady hitting around 14 years old (she was a stray so we aren’t sure). Before I moved out she lived with me and my parents. However, since she moved with me she’s had a few health issues and now requires soft food and medicine twice a day. I’m going out of town for a week and then staying with my parents. My mom offered to keep kiki with her and feed her and give her meds. My only issue is that kiki doesn’t like cars and takes a minute to warm up to new places. But this is the house she spent majority of her life and I’m not sure if she will remember. My fear is she wouldn’t get fed or given her medicine twice a day if she stayed here. Is it safe to take her to my parents aka her old home? Any advice is much appreciated!

BUDGIE JUST ATE FEMALE BUDGIE

I came from work to check today and i just see the male budgie eating the female... her guts & intestines are out and he's just eating the guts and meat with blood all over his beak..and licking all the blood from the floor of the cage.. I moved him but he flies back to the body and keeps eating and licking up all the blood. WHAT THE FUXK? Is he a cannibal? I've never seen something like this. They're the closest bonded budgies I've seen.

Taking a cat to the vet with no proof of medical history. What to do?

Hi, I’m new to this sub. Hope this is the right place to post.

I recently took in a cat from a friend of a friend. The person I got her from didn’t have any of the paperwork from when she adopted the cat because the shelter never gave it to her. I asked her about it and she’s trying to get it from them again. They were unresponsive when she first adopted the cat so she eventually gave up but is still trying for me which I appreciate.

My dilemma is I want to take her to a vet and get paperwork in my name/her an annual checkup appointment so I can make sure she’s up to date with everything and healthy. I was told she had all her shots when I got her and I believe that. However, I don’t have any proof. I’m concerned without it a vet would want to redo certain shots and it’d be unnecessary and more expensive.

Is there anything I can do regarding a vet appointment and not having that paperwork? Do I either just have to wait and hope we get a copy of the paperwork or accept I might need to redo shots she’s had but doesn’t need? Are those my only options or is there anything else I can do? How would a vet normally handle a cat with no proof of medical history? Could they maybe try to obtain it on my behalf?

Thanks and any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated

Trying to find an indoor cat to adopt but no luck

I’ve been looking for cat to adopt but it would have to be indoors since I live in a flat, I keep getting rejected and being told that a garden is needed. My family wants to adopt from a shelter rather than a private seller. I know that places will only allow indoor cats if they are FIV positive or old, but I’ve seen FIV cats being listed in requiring outside access in a secure garden. My neighbours who live below me have a cat that never goes outside, just sits by the window.

Heart murmur in 2 y/o male cat

Hello,

I am on adoption trial for a cat, he’s a wonderful tabby approximately 2 y/o. The ACC where I adopted him has in-house doctors, but are limited in their resources. They detected a heart murmur on their initial checkup upon taking him in, but don’t have any further info (I need to go to a “real” vet for further clarification). They said it could just be because he was stressed out during the doctor checkup (understandable). He is also a 6/9 on the BCS scale.

Is there anything I should specifically ask at the vet? Do lots of cats have heart murmurs that are benign? I just don’t want to adopt a cat that might have a serious underlying condition that I am not fully equipped to take care of. Thanks!

Pet hair as yarn?

Hi! So I remember reading about this a few months ago, but I can't find it anywhere now. It was like a business where you could send your pet's hair and they would make something out of it. Like a little miniature of your pet made out of its own fur! It seemed really interesting because both my dog and my cat have long hair and shed A LOT. So it would be nice to do something with it. Does anyone know a service like this or something similar? Thank you.

Stop talking like you are the only one who has done the right research!!

I made a simular post about this. About closed minded people. But I wanna make this more a vent.

So this about ferrets (I came on here because I think a lot of people should read it, and not only the ferret community)

So I have a ferret. Only one. With basic research ferrets are described as solitair animals. Now if you have done better research you learn that ferrets are indeed solitair animals but have been breeded into being social. So you can officially describe them as social animals.

So I have my ferret is 2 years old now. We are having a great time together. But he rather sleeps than play with me. Now I know ferret need 14-18 hours of sleep a day. But he barely plays. It isn’t like he plays at all but he plays very little.

So I follow this youtuber who recomends having 2 ferrets. And that this (the thing I just described) is a sign of depression.

So I decided to get a second ferret. So I contact this person because she wants to sell her ferret. Adopt not shop. She want the best for her ferrets so she was asking me questions and I was asking her questions of course. But then I told her I would put her ferret with my ferret. And asked her if her ferret is used to that.

And immidiatly she gets in defend mode. Like no she cannot handle that, and she talks about the life trauma her ferret has been going through. Okay fine then I look for another ferret ya know. But this girl really was out here convincing me that I shouldn’t get a second ferret. Because he is too old to ever socialize. Ferrets can get the age of 10.

But like I’m planning on doing it slowly. First getting to know eachothers sent, then getting to know eachother with a fence inbetween them. and after a week put them together. And if they fight I will either send the ferret back. Or have to sell her myself.

And I told this to her. But she is blaming it on that my ferret is probably sick. Like hello, don’t randomly accuse me of being a bad ferret taker. And not that my ferret being sick makes me a bad ferret taker. But I would know if he was sick. I check on him like everyday (healthwise) He eats normally, his poops are normal. His weight is normal, The only thing that is wrong is that he is bored. So I wanna get him a friend.

Like why would you ever accuse someone of that, just because they have different info than u do.

Like she is an actual good ferret caretaker, I could tell. But she was so closed minded. Like the way she takes care of animals is the only good way. Nooo there are ton of different ways, all to be respected.

And she said it in such a sweet way that I know she was really trying to convince me. Like saying her ferrets act on it and all. And that is the way how it works in her house hold. Without actually attacking me (except the illness part). But everytime I told my point of vieuw. It was immidiatly wrong in her eyes.

And I could also tell that she has trust issues. But that isn’t an excuse

Cat is peeing and pooping on bed

We just got a new kitten. She’s about 14 weeks. She’s still very scared of us and hides under the bed. She’s super sweet. I think she is very stressed though. Recently, she started to come out a bit and get close to us despite shaking. I noticed that she hadn’t used her litter box yet. We assumed she was trained. Anyways; I left the room for a bit and caught her on the bed. I went to check and saw that she pooped and peed all over it. I heard this is a sign of stress or maybe she just couldn’t find the litter box? I mean it was right there. Perhaps she wasn’t actually trained. She keeps doing it and thinks that’s her bathroom.

Anyways, I don’t really know what to do. What is the best way to train her? We are thinking of moving her from the bedroom to a downstairs bathroom because it’s tiled and not carpet but there aren’t that many places to hide for her. Should we just leave her in the room and give her time? Is the litter box the issue? My parents are very frustrated and I’m scared they’ll take her back. Plz help.

My 4 year old cat attacks my new cat after almost 4 weeks of having her

Hi there Reddit, so I’ve been having this issue recently with my cat Zoey. My boyfriend and I have a new kitten named Azula, of about 3 months that’s been here for almost 4 weeks and after a few days of being introduced to Zoey she liked to try and square up to her but arching her back and going in circles and when Zoey would lift a paw and she would run and hide, but immediately come out and square up to her and it would be a cycle, after a couple of weeks she grew up a little more and got a little stronger. Now she full on comes up to Zoey gets closer while circling her and arching her back and messes with her tail. Also when Zoey is trying to sleep she likes to have zoomies and mess with her and jump on her and Zoey will just slap her away. Just this past week Zoey has been fully jumping on top of her and biting her really hard on the neck and Azula is really quiet , those will be the only times she will squeal and stay completely still cuz Zoey is super huge. More info: They have eaten together and played together a little bit before as well and have slept next to each other when Azula is calm. Solutions or answers?

Can parrots screech stress my other pets out?

Just out of curiosity, and I couldn't find much related topics online. I have two green cheek conures that have the brain piercing screech every morning and night, or when a flock of lorikeets fly past my house. I personally have learnt to live with it, sort of, they're quiet most of the day anyways. But lately I've been concerned for my dog, who stays home with the two noise machines everyday, and probably has to endure it when no one's home to stop those two from screeching. Even though none of my other pets (a dog, a cat and rats) seems to be bothered but I can't ask them to know for sure. Does birds, especially parrots screeching have an effect on dogs and cats? Does anyone have similar experience?

Suggestions to get a car with URI to eat? I have literally tried everything

*should say cat

It’s been 3 days and the only thing he has drank is water and won’t eat, his antibiotics have kicked in and he can smell. He was give liquid protein at the vet the other day, is taking an appetite stimulant, probiotics for tummy.

I’ve tried - dry food - treat - regular wet food of all varieties - warming up food - using smelliest foods possible - canned chicken, tuna, salmon - cooked egg - cheese - cooked pork - rice - putting food on nose - putting a bit in mouth - milk

Does anyone have any other suggestions or things that worked for them?

Need Advice, End of Life Decision

My dog is 13 will be 14 next year and he has signs of dementia. In our last visit the nurse mentioned the “end of life” topic as I had mentioned some concerns I had. I decided not to go forward with it and tried some food they recommended. It’s been about 2 months and he’s not getting better. He paces for hours at night, has difficulty getting up or moving around at times, forgets he has eaten and has more accidents in the house. I made the call this morning to schedule the appointment and I feel super guilty. Any other people here deal with dementia and their furry friends having to go through it? He doesn’t seem to be enjoying himself anymore and doesn’t like being around us as much, he likes to be on his own so I know it’s time but it’s my first time going through this :(

Cat refuses to eat pill (Prozac). How can I get him to eat it?

My grumpy and anxious cat was just prescribed Prozac which I think will do wonders for his mood. However I cannot get him to eat the pill without spitting it out. Ive tried: - Putting directly in his favorite wet food (he eats without hesitation usually) - Wrapping in deli meat Putting inside a treat - crushing in wet food - Holding him firmly and putting in mouth (he projectile spit it out)

He is currently locked in the bathroom with the wet food and crushed pill, crying and pawing at the door.

Any advice is welcome, please.

Worried for my cat when we move into a new apartment.

I recently started a new job in a new city which I’ll be moving to in a couple weeks. I’m planning to bring my cat, but I’m concerned if she’ll be okay by herself in the apartment while I’m in the office for most of the day. My boyfriend will be moving in as well but not for a couple of weeks, but when he does he’ll be working from home most of the time. I’m just worried about how it’ll be until then.

For context, she’s a 3yo black cat that I adopted from a shelter at 6wks old a few weeks after my mom adopted hers. Initially they were very close but now my cat spends 99% of her time in my room sleeping on my bed and doesn’t really interact with the other pets or people. Of course I really want to bring her, I love her and can’t imagine being without her but I’m concerned she’ll be lonely in the apartment when at our family home there’s always at least one presence somewhere in the house.

She can also be quite shy and jumpy, so I’m wondering if it’s best to bring her after I’m mostly moved in so she’s not terrified by my friends helping me move.

Anxiety over new kitten

I have been dealing with anxiety issues in my life for the past several years, and what I thought would be an exciting new chapter in my life by adopting a foster kitten a few days ago has instead turned into a massive source of stress for me.

I got everything I needed for her, she’s playful and healthy and extremely cute but… I just can’t get rid of this feeling that something isn’t right. It’s like I can’t help but over fixate on anything she’s doing to a detrimental degree.

I feel like I’m having second thoughts and that she deserves to have better owners than me, maybe a family or something like that. But then the thought of having to contact her fosters to tell them that the adoption isn’t working out is equally stressful for me.

I’m not sure what to do. Does anybody have any advice or experiences with this? How much time should I give it to see if there’s some improvement on my end?

The saddest thing is that there’s nothing wrong with her, she’s wonderful… I’m just don’t think I’m in the right headspace for this.

How can I keep my cat away from my food?

Our kitten (4 months old) has been food aggressive ((?) don’t know if that’s the right word) since we rescued him at 5 weeks old. Once he was big enough to jump he started jumping while we prep his food and tried eating it while prepping. Not long after he started trying to snatch our food off of our plates. My husband and I don’t know what to do because he’s influencing our older cat now too (8 months old) and we just put them in our office while we prep their food or eat ourselves. How can we train him to be patient and obedient while we eat our food too? Please no judgement, this is our first time rescuing

My old dog is having issues with her bathroom routine at night. Suggestions?

My dog is turning 11 in March, so she’s getting up there. Tonight she asked to go to the bathroom 3x, which she never does after 9pm. Each time I let her out she just stands in the yard, staring at me. I’d watch her for 15 minutes trying to encourage her to go and she wouldn’t. She’d sniff then stare, then think I was playing, then stare. I’d walk her around the yard, nothing. I’d invite her inside and she wouldn’t move. it’s concerning behavior from her, as she’s never like this (especially when it’s cold, she just does her business as fast as possible to get inside where it’s warm).

Anyways I got here inside and tried to go to sleep, just to get woken up by more barking to go outside. This happened 3x from 10:00 - 12:30. She never used the bathroom, just acted strangely. Well I just got up to go to the bathroom since I’m still awake (now 1:00am) and I stepped in a puddle of urine. Obviously I’m sleep deprived and I understand that she’s an old dog, but this is very irritating. Does anybody have any ideas what caused this tonight? Any solutions?

Any GPS trackers on the market that don't have real-time tracking?

I have a few cats coming around to eat and hang out. It'd be interesting to see where those cats go because sometimes I don't see them for days and then they just appear all of a sudden. This is purely out of curiosity so I don't need to track their position real-time, I'd be satisfied with being able to remove the tracker once the cat returns and then export the data.

Are there any systems like that? I suppose this would be somewhat similar to tracker chips on birds, wouldn't it?

4 year old dog starting to go under bed

I have a 4 year old lab who has always slept on my bed with a blanket and a pillow. She hasn't gone under my bed since she was less than 6 months ago. But the past 2 days she has started to go under my bed. We'll go to bed. I'll tuck her in like I normally do, and then about 5 minutes later she will jump off the bed and go under it.

She seems happy and healthy, tail is always wagging. So I don't think it is a health issue and nothing at my house has changed so I don't think it is nerves.

Dr. Elsey’s Clean Protein Made My Cat Sick

Has anybody else had a really negative experience with Dr.Elsey’s clean protein dry food chicken recipe? I made the transition for my cat into this food because I read only amazing things about this food but it made my cat so sick. He wasn’t pooping normally and was vomiting sometimes 3 times a day - usually bile. It was very concerning but he didn’t appear “sick” or lethargic so I switched his dry food back to open farm to see if that’s what was making him sick and low and behold he is back to perfect health. His vomiting has completely stopped and his poops have returned to normal.

Just want to know if my experience is isolated or if other cats have gotten sick from this food.

Can’t get dog to eat or drink

Last weekend we noticed our dog had a lot less energy and his belly was hard. We took him to the vet and they said he had bladder crystals. Recommended this Urinary SO dry food and antibiotics. He absolutely hated the dry food, so we switched to a wet food equivalent, and he would down the stuff greedily. Throughout the week he’d be up and down, usually worse in the evening, but fine in the morning. He pees normally (no blood), and at least was eating fine (although we drinking water less and less). Thursday night we were scared because he was shaking, not moving, and his belly was rock hard. It also almost felt like there was an organ that was bulging by his tummy. We had a vet make a night visit and all she could do was give us some pain meds. I stayed home to monitor him Friday and he seemed to be doing much better. His belly was soft, his energy was back, and he ate his food. But Saturday he started his usual signs of hard belly and low energy. He would still go on a walk, but moved at a snail’s pace. It has now been 24 hrs and he won’t eat even his wet food or drink. I’ve given him pain meds in case he’s not eating because he’s in so much pain, but I don’t know what else to do. He doesn’t even seem to sleep, he just lays down. We’re taking him to the vet, but we just don’t have much money until this coming paycheck. Is there something simple I can do to get him to eat or drink until at least tomorrow morning?

My dog has been humping my cat!

So I just moved into a new apartment and my cat(male) and dog(female) have always gotten along- i tend to joke and say that they bicker like siblings- but recently, ever since the move, my dog has been humping my cat when she plays with him. she will literally climb on top of him or tackle him so she can begin the humping. I just want to know if this is normal. he is in no way in distress when this is happening, for the most part it just seems as though they are playing. Also they are both spayed and neutered. kitten sneezing

i adopted 2 kittens from the shelter about a week ago. i took them both to the vet for a checkup but mostly because my black cat had discharge in his eyes and was sneezing(ive posted in this reddit before if u remember me!). my gray cat was sneezing as well but it didnt seem to be of much concern as it was only like 3 times a day. i did tell the vet about both of them sneezing. he ended up giving me amoxicillin(7 days) and eye cream(7 days) only for my black cat and said my gray one was healthy. he did say that if my gray one ends up getting sick to just give him the rest of my black cats meds. its been about 4 days since i took them to the vet and my black cat is perfectly fine but now my gray one is constantly sneezing. the issue is that the amoxicillin looks like it only has just about enough to finish my black cats dosage. my question is, is it safe to stop giving my black cat his meds and start giving it to my gray one? should i split the medication and give it to both until its gone? should i finish his prescription and just go to the vet again to get more for my other kitten? my black kittens sickness was a little more severe and the gray kittens seems to just be sneezing. he is otherwise still playful and eating tons. could his just go away on it own since its a lot more mild? or should i not even risk it?

Pippin or Pippen??

Hi everyone! I work at an animal shelter, and we recently got this adorable stray kitten in our care, and I’m going to adopt her soon!

My husband and I love Harry Potter and LOTR, so our first cat’s name is Bellatrix and for this one, we want it to be Pippin, we just don’t know what the better spelling is; i or e?

Also, is it an acceptable name for a girl cat, considering Pippin in LOTR is a boy?

Need advice on training cat

I just adopted my first cat today and he was really stressed out with the change in environment and also because we had movers making a lot of noise. He was initially holed up in his crate even though I left it open. I kept all his stuff in the bathroom and let him stay there because the rest of the house is a mess right now.

I managed to get him a little relaxed by being patient with him and also petting him now and then, and he eventually left the bathroom. My problem is he got stress free late in the night and I was waiting to sleep. As I am a college student and I’d like to be not disturbed in times when I should be studying or even sleeping, how am I supposed to let my cat know that I don’t want to play with him right now.

I hope people don’t misunderstand. I want him to stay in my bedroom but I didn’t do it today because he was so active that I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep like that.

Can’t rid of tapeworms in my feral kitten!

Why is it so hard! He had been treated multiple times with Drontal and Profender including vet visits, each about 30 days to 2 weeks apart. However we’re continue to find the little “seeds” like looking things on his bed and randomly around the house! He’s also been treated for fleas every month since we found him in August and the house have been professional cleaned multiple times including professional carpet clean, because vet keeps telling us it’s from fleas in your house! Washed his bed almost daily! Fecal exam twice both negative! We’re at a lost. Could he build resistance to the medication praziquantel? Should we ask vet for different medication? What we learn that praziquantel is best on the market for tapeworms. Thanks advance for your suggestions!

Cat I adopted yesterday is missing

Hello, yesterday I adopted a cat and he's been missing since last night. My family and I have practically checked every creavas of the house for him and haven't even heard a sound from him. The last spot he was seen is my room (in the basement) and the door was shut with no other way for him to escape. Any advice?

Cleaning for Cat Allergies

About three weeks ago, I adopted a cat. Unfortunately, it turns out I’m pretty allergic, so I have to give her back. My question is this: how should I go about cleaning to reduce my allergies?

I know pet dander can stick around for a while, but it’s gotten to the point where I can barely sleep in my bed because of how congested and itchy I get. Luckily, all of my floors are hardwood, so carpet won’t be an issue.

Any tips on cleaning? Obviously, washing all of my sheets and clothes and stuff. Should I sweep? Mop? Vacuum? Any advice would be appreciated!

Is it legal to adopt a pet (in your name) to gift to someone else?

If someone were to adopt a cat or dog and legally sign a contract for ownership of that animal, is it legal to gift it to somebody else?

Safe food that both kitten and adult cat can eat?

Is there a dry or wet food that is safe and healthy for both kitten and adult cat?

They eat each others food during the day which is causing problems (digestive mostly) and I am gone the whole day so I cannot feed them individually.

Adopted Dog Too Energetic

While visiting a local shelter three weeks ago, I fell in love with a 2 year old female Husky/German Shepherd mix and adopted her. She settled in pretty quickly, but her energy became a problem. Regardless of how much I played with her or took her for a walks, she demands constant playing, cuddling/petting isn't enough, often including playful nipping at feet or tackling. Last night, she somehow escaped the yard and ran away, not sure how. She's driving me crazy. The issue is, when she's relaxed, she's the sweetest angel. As a single male who lives alone and works overnights, I'm worried that I might not be the ideal owner for her. Should I persist and hope she chills out, or return her to the shelter so she can find a more appropriate family home?

How to deal with the loss of a pet

I was an animal hater for 27 years of my life. I took after my family who also hated animals and birds. I wouldn’t say hate exactly, maybe disgust.

Last year my brother got a bird and we all became so attached to it. It was the first thing i checked on when i woke up and all of us played with it all day. It became such a big part of our lives in just a few months.

He went missing two months ago and we cannot get over it. I feel so depressed that i cant study or work. It feels like i lost a member of my family. When i see his pictures and videos i cant control myself and cry for hours. I really don’t know how to get over this.

Is this ethical for a vet to do?

My friend had a very very beautiful cat for a few months, so it was very young. It was mostly an indoor cat but every once in a while would go outside. Well one day it got injured, most likely by a car. It fractured its leg and its internal organs were pushed up its chest somewhere and it was bleeding out. Pretty much it was good as dead.

My friend went to the vet and he said that in order to save the cat, the procedures would cost at least $10,000 usd. Now, that’s a pretty huge amount of money and she couldn’t afford to do it especially without knowing if the cat would make it. If it were just a few thousand, yes, but 10k is a lot. The only other option would be to put the cat down.

Well apparently the vet really liked the cat so he said he could do the surgeries for free, on the condition that he could keep the cat. Obviously, wanting to do anything to save the cats life, my friend said yes.

Later after the procedures, the vet confirmed the cat made a successful recovery. After that my friend was thinking about if it might be possible to get the cat back because she really loves it and misses it. She tried to ask to vet if there’s any way possible she could get her back, and asked if they could set up any type of payment plan or something. But the vet stopped responding when she asked these questions.

My friend is happy the cat is alive and prefers that it was successfully saved rather than be put to sleep. But for some reason it doesn’t sit right with me that the vet would do the procedure for free only on the condition that he could keep it. Yes it’s great that the cat was saved, but my friend really loved her and it wasn’t like my cousin just didn’t want it anymore or was a bad owner, and she really just wishes it didn’t have to happen this way. But is it truly okay for the vet to do this? Or is it wrong that my friend wishes she could have the cat back? What’s your opinion on this?

My dog died alone and I can't get over it

At 3 am yesterday, my 13 year old lab died at the vet alone, without family or friends around him. It was a sudden death. He was so lonely.

A few days ago, my family moved to a new house. We live on the second floor and there was no elevator, which meant my dog had to climb up the stairs, something he didn't have to do in the old house. He fell down and fainted. We sent him to the vet and the vet said it is no big deal. The vet put him on the oxygen machine and initially he recovered quickly. However, last night at 3am his heart suddenly stopped beating while still at the vet. My parents were at home sleeping and I was in college. Everything feels wrong about the situation. He died suddenly and he has got no one close to him with him in his last moments. My parents should have been there. I should have been there. And although I know it is probably irrational and unlikely, I feel like the vet did something or neglected something that killed him.

In his last moments, he must have felt so lonely and so helpless. I can't bear thinking about it and I don't think I will ever get over it. Just want to share his story and my feelings.

Angelfish face rotting!! Please help!!

Out of nowhere my angelfish seemed to develop what looked like large whitehead pimples on the right side of his face, which then slowly grew into what now looks like decaying flesh that covers most of his eye and even more of his face. We now use a water heater to maintain an optimal temperature and are in day 4 of "cure all" type fish meds treatment. Hes getting worse and we cant seem to find anything definitive online about how to address this. Does anyone know what this is?

Question about cat licking something

My cat (5 y/o adopted) used to scratch the woodwork around the house. To prevent him from damaging the doors, I applied an anti scratching tape that's basically double sided tape meant for teaching not to scratch. Lately (last 3 days) I notice he's licking the tape; it's exposed side has some sort of adhesive.

Do you think he could be taking in some sort of glue residue to the extent that I should consider taking the tape off?

My dog is laying down and breathing rapidly and loudly

What could be going on? I’m really worried for him and don’t know what I can do. I’m scared that he’s dying. But I have no way right now to bring him to a vet and I can’t afford one right now anyway.

At what age should I spay my dog?

I have a female pupper, she is 5 months and a half old, she is healthy and happy, good weight and good build, very smart for a dog and is active everyday.

There are a few other dogs in my neighborhood a few years older than her and I’m scared of any impregnating, I think she’s too young to spay, but what do you guys and gals think? Any advice appreciated!

My dogs personality has changed within a night

My pup usually doesn’t like getting on mine and my SO’s bed if we are both on it. He’s very picky. After my alarm went off this morning I laid down but then he jumped up on the bed and just seemed like he wanted attention(which is weird for that time of morning) when he got down I laid back down but he then was on the floor as up close to me and the bed as possible. He also seems very lethargic and since I’ve left for work has not left my SO’s side. Sleeping in bed with her like as close as he can get. He peed and pooped this morning and I gave him a treat but it seems he’s become very clingy and very lethargic over night. When I was petting him this morning he was smiling, his personality is just very different right now. Any suggestions as to what could be going on?

Human Parents, if your dog is "good with children" it does NOT mean they are stuffed animals. Your child still needs to respect them.

Knowing I am very familiar (not professional though) with dog behavior, and have hung out with her child and dog together many times, a mom came with me hysterical: after "no" warning her dog who ADORES her kiddo and is usually super gentile growled and snapped at him twice.

She says "my kid was being so nice to the dog, he was hugging her and petting her, the dog did that with NO warning, I don't think she wanted to hurt the kid because she didn't bite. how do I train the dog not to snap again?"

I know that dog through and through and I know that dog gave 20 different warning signs over the course of a long enough time and she only snapped when each and every one of them was ignored.

Upon me giving her a list of warning signs the mom confirmed the signs but she thought the dog wasn't serious.

The dog was looking away from kid and at her, licking her lips, twisted her nose and moon eyes. Usually the dog would have walked away but the kiddo was on top of her. (The kid is 10 months too young to be taught). The kid should have beem removed from dog way earlier than that.

On top of that I have noticed they have been allowing kid to steal toy from dog's mouth and then scolding dog when she gently takes toy back (I already told them when they asked for advice to not let kid touch dogs toys but their solution has been that no one gets the toys so they took them away).

Also they allow kid to put hands in water bowls as she's drinking. I gave a very stern talk to parents because they will lead the dog to actually hurt the kid and then blame the dog.

Cat won’t stop scratching at the carpet in front of bedroom door

We recently got some cats. They’re awesome, except sometimes. At night and early morning, the female will scratch at the carpet in front of our door. This isn’t good bc we r renting and don’t want to damage anything. It’s not cuz she’s lonely cuz she has the male with her and they r best friends. I would let them in during the night but they think the room is a play spot and run around, chase each other, mess with the things in the room, etc. Any solutions? I’ve tried putting a towel but it don’t work lmfaoo. We’ve got them trained to not claw the couch so it’s obviously do-able, but I just need some suggestions on how to fix this.

At our wits end.

We have 4 dogs, and lately 3 of them have been wanting to sleep in the bed with us at night. My wife and I are both 6ft tall+ and have only a queen sized bed. One dog is a full bed. Now they are jockeying for position and then when they get in bed they just want to lick us. So two nights ago we kicked the two worst offenders out and into the rest of the house where they have a nice, big sectional couch to sleep on, plus all of their toys and a comfortable dog bed. But they stood at our door and whined off and on in shifts keeping us from falling asleep for longer than an hour or so at a time and we take shifts going out and telling them to be quiet. We can’t kick them all out, because the one we keep in with us is our neurotic husky mix that would just make things worse by tearing up something. We’re not in a position financially yet to go buy a king sized bed, we think that would give everyone enough room, but right now there just isn’t the space for one 40lb dog and two 65+lb dogs and us in bed. Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping them from winning all night and keeping us up?

Taking my cat into apartment was a mistake.

Of course the 8 hour shift i get having to get up early my cat decides its a good time to act up. Its 6 am and I can't fall back asleep. I'm pretty sensitive and easily wake up. I feared this wouldn't work out ...she did pretty good the other two nights but this night nope. She is an indoor and outdoor cat and I feared her outside hunting instincts would kick in. Plus the sound of her kitty box too.

I feel guilty taking her back to my fathers but then again she may be happier being free roaming around the pasture and coming in. I just value my sleep more and to function at work.

Shes not a kitten she's and adult.

Cat peeing blood

My 11 month cat has recently been peeing blood and we took her to the vets and they asked us to give a urine sample. When the results came back there were crystals of bladder stones present and so the vet prescribed a urinary diet for dissolve the stones and anti inflammatory meds. She’s been on the diet for a week and I stopped the meds for 3 days because she was having diarrhoea and the medication states to stop if so.

She is still peeing blood but if anything this time it is looking worse. Is this normal for urinary diets??
