Adopted 2 kittens from a shelter a few weeks ago. Black is older, like 6 months, Orange is the little one, about 3 months. Kept them in separate rooms at first, introduced them slowly, near food, the whole shebang. The younger, Orange leapt at friendship at the first opportunity. Black, was a little timid at first but got over it easily and they spend all day wrestling and playing now. Black is like 2 lbs bigger but Orange always starts the wrestling matches, despite no chance of winning them.
I observed their interactions carefully for any signs they were fighting, not playing. They're fine, they take turns chasing, etc. But chasing and wrestling is ALL they do. They don't ever cuddle or groom each other, it's just pounce and play. I was a little concerned about it but they started sitting near each other chill so I guess it's ok.
But here's the issue. Black has a strong prey drive. He will leap at any sound or moving thing. Sometimes Orange is that moving thing. Which works out when they both want to play, but when Lil Orange has to use the litter box, the scratching sound inevitably brings Black running and he pounces him. Poor baby can't poop in peace. I have 3 litter boxes, 2 downstairs, 1 upstairs, but they both tend to use the one in the room where I am. Lil Orange is now taking to pooping in corners because of how often he's been jumped while using the box. I did not buy 3 litter boxes for them to poop on the floors. I've intercepted Black a couple of times and shooed him away so Orange can poop in peace, but Orange is so jumpy at the box, he'll often run out of it anyway. I wanted to know if anyone has advice on either keeping Black from interfering in Orange's poop time or getting Orange to use one of the other boxes so he can go in peace.
