I need advice! First time cat parent living with a roommate who cleans her cats' litterbox infrequently

Hello everyone!

I recently adopted a cat, and I'm really excited. I've been asking my roommate, who has 2 cats, for advice since I've never had a cat before. When we were talking about litterboxes she told me that she only scoops hers every other day (and I suspect that she actually does it less frequently.) She has 1 litterbox for her two cats. Her room, and by extension the entire apartment, have reeked of ammonia ever since we moved in, and I brought it up to her a few times since the smell gives me a headache and makes me embarrassed to invite people over. I brought up switching her litter brand and she essentially told me that she couldn't do it because she had already bought several bags. I had no experience living with cats before this, so I thought that the stench was just an unpleasant but unavoidable part of living with cats. Now I'm starting to feel like she is not doing enough to resolve this and could be putting all of our healths at risk. I feel bad for her cats, since I've seen them sniff around the box, have a flehmen response, leave, and then come back. One time one of her cats pooped in the hallway. They often smell like urine and drag bad smelling litter around the apartment. I guess my question is, is this dangerous for my cat? The last thing I want is for him to get sick.
