How do I make my cat like staying in my bunk bed?

I sleep at the top of the bunk, it has a window, but when I pick my cat up, he wants to leave immediately, he usually looks out of the window at the living room, how do I make my cat like staying in my room/bunk bed?

Newly-diagnosed feline diabetes.

My best bud was recently diagnosed with feline diabetes and tomorrow I'll be learning how to give him insulin injections.

I'd do anything in the world for this little dude as I'm sure I wouldn't be here today without him. I have no actual doubts about being able to learn this, I'm just anxious about this entirely new thing in our lives.

If anyone has any tips or their own feline diabetes stories, I'd really appreciate it. I just need to hear from people that are in the same boat right now.

Does my yolkshire feel uncomfortable when I put him in a bag like this?

Hi, I bought a dog bag that is shown below, and my dog seemed quite happy in it at first. However, it will sometimes go into fits of barking when inside the dog bag, and I am wondering if it is because he needs to pee/poop, or if the bag is just giving him discomfort?

I bought it from https://pawandall.com/products/dog-bag for reference. (no, they did not pay me for this)

Edit: Yorkshire* sorry...

Need Flea Help With Indoor Cats

I have two indoor cats with fleas. I'm not sure how bad the infestation is. I moved their fur around and saw at least three in one spot but I have no bites.

My vet had me start them on Revolution, which I applied to them earlier today. One was difficult as her fur is VERY thick. (Should I shave a bit of her neck??)

I'm picking up hertz ultraguard spray tomorrow with Phenothrin. Is this safe to put on the carpets?

I've vacuumed the carpet and all soft areas (couch, pillows, bed, etc.). I've also washed ALL clothing and linens.

What else can I do? I need this gone ASAP as I'm moving to a new house in a month. I've never dealt with fleas before so I'm at a loss.

I sincerely appreciate any help.

Are those turtle plastic lagoons actually good for the turtle?

Ive had a small turtle when i was a kid and i remember having it in a small plastic laggoon with an island. However, it died after a week, and im not sure if the enclosure itself was the cause of this, because all the pet turtles i see online all have a giant tank. I now want to get a baby red eared slider, but this time to actually take good care of it untill it becomes big, thing is, i really like the aspect of the little lagoon with its island and it dosent take too much space either, but i wanted to know if those are actually not good for the turtles? like if theyre only designed so the turtle wont live long? what should i do?

Cat Adoption in the Time of Corona...

Okay, so this might sound silly, BUT: My boyfriend and I live in NJ, which is a very hard-hit state. I lean higher risk, having congenital cardiac history, so we've been on fairly strict lockdown for about six weeks. We've gotten all our groceries delivered, keep things in the garage overnight when possible, wipe everything down before it comes in the house, etc., AND the rescue we're adopting from will also be delivering the cat! (They originally wanted to meet in PetSmart but after I explained the situation super generously offered to deliver. The alternative was someone picks her up for us.) Now, the woman I spoke to said we'll wear gloves and masks for the handoff, we'll bring the cat inside, and then bring the carrier down to her, which seems fine. Would it be silly to give our new cat a bath immediately/within the first day?

I also have cleansing wipes (for cats, don't worry) I could also wipe her down with, and I've read you can improvise with a damp towel and a very very small amount of white vinegar, but that's definitely plan B or C. She'll be going from her foster, to PetSmart, to the woman who will be delivering her, to our home within a matter of a few hours, so she'll have a lot of contact with various people. She's also been living with a bunch of other cats and kittens at her foster's place, so even if we weren't in the middle of a pandemic I'd probably bathe her soonish anyway, just to freshen her up a bit.

This stray cat often comes to my house and I've been feeding it food and water for a few weeks now..maybe a month?

I think it has gotten attached to me,it meows at me,purrs loudly, rubs itself against me,and it always sits there waiting for me to give it food or just play with it.

It's a she,I think she's an adult, and her belly is big,I think she's pregnant too.But she smells really bad,and I'm considering taking her inside my house to bathe her..she licks herself very often every day,I searched it up and its bcs she does it to clean herself.

Should I bathe her??I do wish to take care of her,or maybe even adopt her,but I'm not sure whether my family would be supportive of this...

Pet Duck??

Hello!

My step-daughter (12), has been wanting a duck forever, and then one day we went to get hay for our rabbits one day and the feed store had them, she basically squeaked with excitement. She has been researching how to do it and has been trying to do chores to save up some monies for them. We are struggling (as is everyone) with this whole quarantine thing and feeling super alone, my wife and I are thinking this might be the perfect time to get her that duck. Anyone have a pet duck? I know they are some social creatures and we have a huge backyard and could get a kiddie pool and dog house for shelter, but how do they do socially with humans?

Any other advice would be helpful!

Thank you so much!

How to get your cat to stop spraying around the house !😓

So he doesn’t have his manhood anymore but he still manages to spray around the house ! I’ve tried everyyyything ! I’ve deep cleaned his favorite spots, I’ve spent money on top anti spray products, I’ve gotten him open bladder surgery to check if he indeed was spayed correctly ( a waste of $500), I’ve changed his diet many times , I’ve done a lottttt and nothing works !

Im so tired of having to clean pee, it just smells so bad . Kicking him outside or having him live outside isn’t an option 🙄 anyone else have this problem ??

Should I adopt a dog?

Heyyy. Well, I'm a 16yo student. Me and mum, have been thinking of adopting a stray dog for a while now. We both think that a dog would bring life into the house. My dad doesn't seem to be happy about it and neither does my brother. We found a little dog the other day, waiting to get adopted, so we are discussing whether we can get it or not. Keep in mind that I will be the one most responsible for taking care of it, walking it etc. The problem is, I don't know if I'm ready for something like that. Now in quarantine there's plenty of time, but when school starts I might be under lots of pressure. I also find a hard time waking up in the morning, which might make walking it at that time a bit of a hustle? But I haven't found a good reason to happily wake up early sinxe now... A new member of the family could change our lives for good. The question is, what should I do? I really feel like I need a dog in my life, it like a part of me missing. However, as I said, I will have to take care of most daily responsibilities, which is fine, but I want to consider every aspect before making the final decision. I want it to be a responsible one, as we have to do with a living being..

[Help] Should I confront my neighbor for suspicion of animal abuse?

So 3 years ago when I got my dog, my neighbor came over. He and my mom are kind of friends. I was talking about how my dog likes to run off, and not come when called. He was talking about his dogs not running off anymore and how he "doesn't even have to hit them anymore" so he obviously hit them to train them. Anyways. The last time I talked to him, was about a year ago. He just called me asking if I want to make some money doing yardwork, and left a voicemail. At the end of its he said he got a new puppy. Is it bad to have those little removable tips put on my cats claws?

I know declawing is bad, so I would never do that, but my vet offered to put little removable tip things on my cat’s claws to help reduce the amount of scratching he does. Normally I wouldn’t care but the people I live with are extremely bothered by his scratching and might make me get rid of him eventually if it doesn’t stop. He has SEVERAL scratching posts and a lot of toys, but still prefers the nice couch in the den.

How can I help my cat gain confidence / be less scared of everything?

We adopted our cat (Churchill) back in November. He's 6 years old, and lived his whole life in a cat colony prior to moving in with us.

Even to this day, he is scared of a lot of things. When he is walking on the floor and we walk past him, he will run away. If he is close to a door and we slowly open it, he will also run away. Same goes when we move clothes around, it scares him. He also tends to hug the walls when on the ground, and never jumps up, except to go on the couch or our bed.

That being said, there is some hope. When he is sleeping on the couch or our bed, he isn't timid at all. He will let himself be cuddled like there's no tomorrow, and will even ask for more when we stop.

If this helps to know, he had to have all his teeth extracted. I don't know if this could worsen timid behavior...

How do you deal with pet hair

Hello everyone,

I recently got a Husky puppy about 7 months old ans she sheds worse than I could ever imagine! - It's a NIGHTMARE!

I've tried all the others lint roller throwaway and reusable wash off and they work at first but lose pickup power too fast.

I recently purchased a pet hair brush (or roller, not sure how to call it) and I am not even kidding when I say that it litteraly changed my life!!!

What took me an hour before using a vacuum and sticky tapes, takes me now about 10 minutes! I'm seriously obsessed with it, it's alsmost satisfying to pick up my dogs hair now 😂

I personally got it from cleanthefluff.com (not sure if I'm allowed to share the website link but I feel like I owe them one, the mods can just remove the link if this poses a problem). I am mad I didn't know this kind of product existed before! This little tool seriously does an amazing job!!!

I am curious how you guys deal with pets hair if you don't have this brush, maybe there is another amazing product I don't know about (please tell me your secrets) ^^

Hopefully this can help. If you have any other Tricks and Tips to remove/pickup pets hair, please feel free to comment.

Stay safe!

Cat suddenly will no go into litterbox anymore...

Hi everyone, I'm a bit at my wits end, and would appreciate any help, if possible.

We've had out cat for about four years. He's very neat as most cats are and never had any issues with their litterbox. However, for the past 4 weeks, he seems to be pooping outside of the litter box. Everytime I noticed, I cleaned it off with clorox wipes and sprayed it as well. I thought the issue might be the size of the litterbox (we moved half a year ago, and it hadn't been an issue ever, but I always thought it was a bit small) as the poop was always just outside the litterbox. So I purchased a new one which is considerably larger.

However, this morning I again see he pooped outside of it. It never seems to be an issue with peeing, so I truly don't know what the issue is. Nothing has changed (litterwise, or anything else) aside from that we are home a lot more now, for obvious reasons.

I'm also now worried he might be used to it now and we somehow have to retrain him and that might be the issue? So that the box is fine, but that it's just a behavioral issue now? Or do you suggest to go to the vet. He seems 100% the same in every other way, but I just don't know anymore,

Help with my mouse please

Today I had gotten two female mice. One is completely fine but the other is a Bit concerning, its eyes are squinted sometimes fully shut I read Its easy to fix just little bath and cotton swab, but it also has a little bit of skin sticking out where the typical genital area would be. Online said it could be sick. Is this true? Could it mean she's just had babies or is it a boy?

What else can we do to find our cat? It’s been 28 hours

Been 28 hours now, she goes out every now and then but never more than two hours, this is the longest she’s been gone. She snuck out late last night when My mom was letting the dogs out. It was raining almost half of the last 28 hours. She is mainly an indoor cat, however she has had one incident a year ago where she got lost for almost 30 hours and we found her on a fence two blocks down a day and a half later at 4am

  • put flyers in the neighborhood and tell people about our cat -posted on local Facebook groups about our missing cat
  • look for her late at night, we took flashloots and have been looking from 10pm to 4am intermittently and as well as through the day.
  • put her food and litter out
  • smeared wet food on the fences surrounding our house and a few of the neighbors fences with their permission l.
  • Let our dogs out to see if they can attract our cat( they are pretty close to each other)

Thank you all

Fleas: did I act quickly enough or do I need to continue the combat?

Hi all,

We rescued a kitten Monday evening and on Tuesday lunchtime, I spotted one flea running through her fur. I checked her over and couldn’t find any others.

Tuesday afternoon, we gave her a bath using a bit of dish soap in the water then treated her with flea spot on by 6pm. We also combed her through with a flea comb

We’ve hoovered the house a few times and emptied the vacuum in the outside bin (cordless dyson), done a flea bomb in the front and back of the house, used a flea spray for the carpets/hard to reach places and washed all towels plus her bedding and ours.

Plan is to continue hoovering every day followed by respraying carpets etc, plus we will do some flea bombs in two weeks.

I feel like I’ve gone OTT but I do not want fleas in the house as I’ve experienced it before and it was horrendous.

Do you think we’ll be safe? This is my worst nightmare 😂

[survey] on dog behaviour

Hey there,

I am doing a PhD at La Trobe Univeristy on dog behaviour. We are trying to understand more about how dogs regulate their own behaviour by applying a concept from human psychology, Executive Function. Executive Function is an umbrella term for cognitive processes that are used to regulate behaviour.

Dogs need to constantly regulate their own behaviour (e.g. not jumping up on visitors, not chasing a cat on the other side of the road). At the moment we know very little about EF in dogs.

If you have a dog and 15 minutes spare to take part in this survey, it would be awesome!

Thanks :)

My dog is getting aggressive, and is charging my cats

I’m looking for some advice, my dog is 5 years old and I love him to death but he has been problematic since we got him. He has a lot of health issues, he’s had surgery numerous times, and we do everything we can to keep him healthy but I think he is in pain sometimes from these things. He’s very sweet but has a dark side- very protective over food, and he’s bit my family members before. We got 2 cats a couple months ago, and we thought he would get used to them bc we had a cat before. One cat in particular he does not like. I’ve seen him snap at her- like a warning bite, and she’s terrified of him. I watched him charge at her today after she was cowering away from him. I’ve kept my cats separate from him but I don’t know what to do. Any advice?

Would it be cruel to keep my cat in only one section of the house (large bedroom, bathroom, and hallway)?

Hi, I recently starting fostering a cat that I would like to adopt. She is about 1 years old, very cuddly and very vocal. She is a sweet girl and I want to make sure I ensure the best situation for her. I am a college student that is currently at home due to the pandemic. I live upstairs in my parents house in a pretty large bedroom. My mom is allergic to cats and would prefer if I kept the cat upstairs. She would be confined to my large bedroom most of the time. However, my bedroom has a window seat for her, I am in the room about 85% of the time and give her lots of attention, she has toys in here, a bed, food, a litter box that is cleaned daily, treats, etc. I am doing everything I can to keep her happy and recently bought a harness and leash so she can go outside sometimes too. I would also like to mention that this is temporary. This situation will only happen when I am home for school breaks. 9 months out of the year I live at school and there she will have an entire house to roam around in and my roommate to also interact with. She has been with me in my bedroom for about 2ish weeks now and seems perfectly happy and healthy. She is playful, cuddly, eating, etc. So is this a cruel situation or is it perfectly fine if I am making sure all of her needs are met?

Need advice on how to get dogs to like each other.

My boyfriend brought home a 5 month mel puppy, I already have a 10 yo Great Pyrenees, 6 yo toy poodle, and a recent addition, a 2 1/2 yo great pyre. They don’t get along with each other at all, bark aggressively at each other. Other then that he’s v v sweet with my son and me. My boyfriend had them all tied up and said they needed to just bark it out and get used to each other, I just took this for face value. How long does it take for dogs to get used to each other? And what’s some things I could do to help them out? I’ve gotten all my older dogs blankets and stuffed them into the pups cage to see if maybe smelling them would help some.

Low Maintence , Inexpensive and Tame-able Pets

Hi everyone, I was wondering if there's a pet out there that is very low maintenance and cheap, yet open to handling etc. I have had 2 hamsters, one of which died recently so I'm not looking to get a hamster. Cats and dogs are not an option for me, and I don't really like [read : hate] snakes. I was thinking about a chameleon but I heard they don't like to be handled.

Someone Please help!! - Baby Bird Found!

Today, I found a baby bird outside my home. It is a fledgling with full feathers, but is extremely small, has some pinfeathers, and can't fly. As per my observations, it seems to be a wren, or a similar species to that. I observed it for 3 hours, and no parents have showed up. I took it inside and have it in a cool, dark shoebox and have given it small bowls of water to drink from and offered it mealworms and put seeds near it to eat.

I don't know what to do. I have multiple pet birds and am quite experienced with the care of them (African greys, cockatiels, finches) and have cared for some abandoned baby finches unsucessfully (albeit much younger ones). I am able and willing to take the bird in permanently, and don't want it on my conscience if it dies either on my watch or by leaving it outside and it's parents don't show up. During this covid crisis, I'm not comfortable leaving my home and going to an animal shelter to give it in. Someone please help - I wanna give this guy a chance!

Want to adopt a cat but worried about unknown allergies

I’ve never really had pets growing up, aside from hamsters, birds and fish because my mom has asthma and is pretty allergic to dogs and especially cats. I have my own place now and I want to adopt a cat but since I’ve never been exposed to one for a long period of time, I’m not sure if I have allergies that I’m unaware of. I only say this because while I’ve been around cats for hours at a time and never had issues, I pet sat my friends long haired cat and got a single hive on my arm after being at her house for an hour, but had no other issues so I’m not even sure if it was from the cat. I guess I’m wondering if short hair cats are more hypoallergenic, or if the SPCA lets you do a trial run in case you have any issues. I’ve also heard of people with allergies that get used to their own pets so much their allergies go away—has anyone had experience with any of this?

Is it weird to miss my cats. If they're sleeping looking all cute I'll go up and kiss their forehead or their cheek and sometimes their soft belly. Severe grief and depression after giving puppy back to breeder

This is going to be long and I apologize.

One week ago my husband and I got a sweet 8 week old Goldendoodle puppy. Before we got her I was SO excited. Did all the research, bought all the toys, etc. I am currently laid off due to the Coronavirus so we figured this was an opportune time to train a dog. My husband works LONG hours and 12+.hour days usually but I figured I could handle it. We currently have a 9 year old Rottie that we rescued 3 years ago.

We brought her home and she was a typical puppy. She cried at night and in her crate and needed to be let out often, etc. From the first night I brought her home I never felt so overwhelmed. It didn't help that every time she even got close to our older dog she would growl, snarl and snap at her. My husband ensured me that in time she would adjust to her. Unfortunately the dynamic in our home had my anxiety through the roof. I didn't realize that I wouldn't be able to do anything without her crying for me. I guess I figured I'd at least be able to trust having her loose in the house with me but due to our older dog I felt I needed to supervise them CONSTANTLY. By day 3 I felt that I had made a huge mistake in getting her. My anxiety spiraled out of control and I started worrying about everything with her and how I was worried things were never going to get better. The worst of this was also because I was alone constantly since my husband works so much. I had the worst panic attack I've ever had when I started trying to talk to him about her after only having her 4 days. Don't get me wrong, I read about "puppy blues" and how these feelings were common but I felt so so trapped. My panic attack lasted 3 hours. I tried to carry on as normal as possible with her until another panic attack hit. I had them consistently for 3 days after the first. My husband was stressing and worrying so much about me at work that it was causing him to lose sleep and to call me while working. The last night we had her I had another panic attack. He told me he thought we should return her to the breeder because he can't stand to see me this way. Every time he said it I bawled. I woke up in the morning yesterday and I cried. I held her and I knew I couldn't handle this. My mental state was entirely too fragile to continue for even another few days. We called the breeder and returned her in the morning.

My husband cried when we left her, which I've only seen him do twice. When we got home he sat in our living room in silence and just stared into space. He told me that he wished we could've made it work cause he loved her and felt committed to taking care of her. This made me feel even more awful. The reason I'm writing I guess is to look for anyone who can relate or tell me things get better. When will this HORRIBLE feeling of guilt and depression go away? Did I do the right thing? How can I stop thinking of the what ifs and seeing her all around my house? I've never felt such horrible sadness and I'm having such a hard time coping. Please don't tear me down, I already feel worse enough.

My fixed dog won’t stop humping my puppy

They are both boys. It’s mostly when they are playing or fighting and he gets excited. Is it a dominance thing? His little chapstick always comes out too. Any way to get it to stop? 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Edit: also wanted to add that the puppy obviously fights back and the other dog gets aggressive about it

The True Price of a Pet

Price of a pet.

I wish people would stop buying pets without doing research first. Every year, many people buy a pet they cannot afford, and then abandon it. It is awful. I found this infographic that covers what costs are associated with cats and dogs. I know this is Christmas themed, but I still feel like this is prevalent all year round. Getting a dog as a pet is at least a 10-year promise and about an $8,000 investment, if not more. Getting a cat is at least a 20-year promise and about an $9,500 investment, if not more. Pets are living breathing creatures. They cost money and need a lot of attention and care. It might sound harsh, but if you cannot afford a pet, you shouldn’t get one. My husky is a rescue and I love him very much! It hurts me to know that someone just abandoned him as a pup.

It’s entirely possible to get a pet and be a good owner. I just think more people should do research and think about the decision first.

Hi all. Help needed with newly adopted 8-year-old Cattail Coton Breeder

Hi all. New member.

My elderly parents adopted Ginger, an 8-year-old Cattail Coton breeder, last Friday -- which essentially means I've adopted her (which is great as I've had health issues for a while).

She's never had a leash attached to her, nor ever left her first home. Starting Friday, she was very shy, eating little, drinking less, no poops. I took her to the vet yesterday for a checkup/tests, and she's fine except for issues related to being dehydrated.

As of yesterday though, I was able to feed her by hand, and then successfully swap out my hand with her food bowl. I was also able to get her from the car to house on a lease, rewarding her with treats when I atttached/disattached the leash. My parents don't have a fenced yard., so we have a fifty foot secured leashed for her to roam (great neighbors), and a caged off area to poo (as was her previous system).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated --- especially regarding getting her to drink, and best methods for acclimating her to using a leash.

THanks so much!

Should I adopt another cat?

I have a 13 year old declawed cat that I adopted 6 years ago. She is a very easy going, relaxed cat. Occasionally throughout the day she gets a burst of high energy and runs around, smacks cat toys and loves to play, but for the most part she's a huge fluffy lump. She's also very sweet and has never been mean to myself or others. She is pretty needy in terms of attention, and while she's usually okay while I'm at work she really dislikes when I stay the night somewhere. ESPECIALLY for more than one day.

So I've been considering another cat for a while, to keep each other company and play with each other. However I have been pretty picky about the type of cat I would consider, but there is one at my local shelter that seems pretty perfect.

She is an 11 year old, and also declawed (I dislike declawing but this was important to me since my current cat is, she lived with a clawed cat before and got pretty scratched up since that cat was aggressive) and based on the description it sounds like she has a similar temperament (gentle, sweet).

My concerns are mainly due to their age, would this be a good idea? I don't want to cause either kitty stress that wouldn't be good for them as seniors, and I've done research which all says adult cats are much harder to introduce. I've done a lot of research about how to properly introduce cats but am open to tips. I would dearly love having another kitty but am nervous about disrupting my current cat's life at her age, and would be heartbroken to being such an old sweet baby back to the shelter if it doesn't work out. I just want her to have another friend.

Advice needed: Cat dropped small dry poop randomly

I have a male cat that we rescued when he was three, he’s almost five years old now. We just recently moved into a new apartment and he seemed to be adjusting fine. During the time we were at the old apartment, we’ve noticed small poop ( about the size of a quarter, golden color with a bit of hair mixed in it, dry) around the apartment a few times, we thought he just kicked the poop out of the litter box on accident. It was only a few times, and it doesn’t smell, so we never minded it. Other than that, he’s never had a problem with using litter box.

He’s always sleeps with me at night on my bed that’s taller than a desk. But tonight when I was browsing YouTube until 4am and got up to drink water, I saw a small poop on my bed cover. He’s been asleep since we went to bed the whole time, only woke up once when I accidentally shined the phone light on him and fall asleep right afterwards. It seems like he has no idea he pooped, and I don’t think it was stuck to his medium hair because he’s been playing under my bed, on top of my dresser, before we went to sleep. When I put his face next to the poop ( bc that’s what my grandpa does when our pets do the dirty) he acted oblivious about the poop, and fall asleep again with the poop under his armpit 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I keep him hydrated by mixing half wet food half water, and he usually has that an hour before we go to bed. He’s been on instinct high protein diet ever since I got him. He does seem to eat less for the last couple months, about 1/3 cup of dry food a day, and 3oz of wet food, but he didn’t lose any weight.

Due to quarantine, I can’t bring him to a vet, and I also don’t think it’s too big of a deal as he’s only done this maybe 5 times, and it’s dry and doesn’t smell and easy clean up. But any suggestions about why he does this would be nice. Thank you!

Tldr: my cat pooped a small dry poop during his sleep and act oblivious about it, it might happened a few times before, but this is the first time I’m sure he pooped it where I found it

How to raise and control Intact (Non Neutered) Male Cat

So I recently adopted an 8 week old baby kitten. I love him so much and he’s become a beloved addition to my family in the past 2 weeks he’s lived with us.

I want to keep him healthy and happy, however I do not plan on neutering him.

I have caught a lot of angry and downright rude comments and messages when I’ve discussed this previously.

However my main reason is because I want to breed him. He’s a beautiful York Chocolate and I got him for free, so I think it would be cool in another 2-3 years to get him a mate so they can have a few litters in a humane way of course.

So with that being said, I’ve heard all the horror stories of what a male cat becomes if he’s not neutered. However, I haven’t found anyone or instructions on how to control an intact cat.

So those who haven’t neutered their male cats or have experience training cats, how do I control him when he’s reached sexual maturity. What are some techniques I can use to make sure he doesn’t become immediately hostile or spray around my house? Any advice you can give would be beyond appreciated.

Also, if you are going to make a rude comment about my choice or not give any helpful advice, just don’t comment because you’re not helping.

Otherwise thanks :)!

Cat snuck out at night four hours ago. Cat usually not out for more than 2-3 hours, and only in the daylight. It’s been four hours and has rained a bit

Hi there it’s midnight now, but about 3.5 to four ish hours ago my cat snuck at when my mom opened the back door.

She never leaves for more than 1-3, it’s been four hours now so we are kind of worried as she is always back within a 2-3 hours max. Also it rained pretty hard here and it’s dark, usually we only let her go out when there is light out. Am I over-worried? I’m worried she won’t know what to do in the rain and dark.

I started looking around with a flashlight and calling her name to no avail

Few questions for those that have had Pet fountains for a while

My cat loves drinking out of the sink. To the point where she literally sits at the sink half the day waiting for me to go wash my hands and turn the water on for her.

I worry she's not drinking out of her bowl and wanted a fountain for her. I bought the Catit Flower Fountain this weekend as it topped a lot of reviews. I set it up yesterday and she won't go near it. I moved her food bowl away from it and it's away from her litter box.

I was considering getting a different one. I'm wondering if she doesn't like this one because it's huge and has bright colors (top looks like a flower) and the water barely trickles out of it. Looks like it could be tough to drink from ( https://usa.catit.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Flower-Fountain-with-new-waterlevel-window-3-643x494.jpg). Been looking at some others that appear to have a stronger stream/more space but then I read the negative reviews and get worried (even though they all have average of 4+ stars)

So my questions to those who have water fountains

-what model do you have?

-how long have you had it?

-How do you like it? Have you had any issues?

-how long did it take your cat to start using it?

And advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Can a fire alarm trigger a seizure in a dog?

Our dog had a seizure yesterday for the first time to our knowledge so we took her to the vet. They took her blood and and they said she was completely healthy. The fire alarm went off the day she had the seizure because it needed new batteries and my mom was wondering if that could have caused it. A different fire alarm went off the day before but we took care of it. Do you think this could have possibly contributed to her seizure?

I’d like to purchase a budgie as a first time pet owner.

I’ve been intending on purchasing a Budgie for a while, what should I know as a first time bird owner?

My single priority is the birds well-being, I am a student, outside of 8 hours 5 days a week + 6 hours spread across Friday after noon and Saturday Sunday morning I will mostly be home, what is a sufficient size bird cage? I intend to keep it in my bedroom, it is not spacious, what dimensions should the cage be, and what temperature/sunlight do I need to maintain for the birds wellbeing? How many toys should I supply it with? Is it recommended to keep a movie or something of the like playing for the budgie?

Any response will be much appreciated, my thanks in advance.

Depressed over shy cat

I adopted a cat from an animal shelter about 6 weeks ago. I named her Sango. She came from a hoarder house and had just recovered from a URI. She’s been hiding in our half bath in an enclosed cat bed. She would hide behind the toilet and after reading/watching advice about shy cats, you need to give cats “safe hiding spots.” As a compromise, I stuffed pillows behind the toilet and put her bed on the side of the toilet (her litter box is on the other side). Her food station is setup in this room. She only comes out for treats and food and any sudden noises scare her, especially the sound of my husband’s foot steps. She will immediately retreat to her bed. Occasionally, she will come out of her bed with her tail pointed up and twitching and rubbing my hand with her cheek. She seems only do this in the morning after I feed her. So I guess there’s that.

Last week I switched her cat bed with a duplicate (she was sneezing and I wanted to spot clean it, it looked dirty, covered in tons of furs and litter sand from her paws). She freaked and hid behind our dishwasher in the kitchen. We pulled her out because it is an extremely small crawl space and I had fears she wouldn’t get out. I feel like this set her back again. She’s sometimes friendly, but again, not so often.

I’m been depressed about this, because she’s just not warming up as much to my husband and I would like. Is this ever going to change? I noticed that she gets extremely antsy as we go to bed and can see on our web cams that she does leave the room only at night and use the cat trees and litter box in the other rooms. There was only 1 time she was out in the kitchen in the morning in the duplicate bed we setup in a chair. I’m not sure if she fell asleep and didn’t realize we were up. Once we went downstairs, she snuck army style back to the half bath. This was a few days after the dishwasher incident.

Sorry, this is more a vent than anything. My husband and I have been stuck working from home because of COVID-19 and this cat is my main focus. It’s just making me so sad that she doesn’t seem to like us.

Cat has poo stuck in her butt area (fur) and I don't know what to do.

So before you say this is stupid and you can just bath her, I can't. First of all, she was spayed about 6 days ago but yesterday, I had to take her to the vet because her wound reopened. She kept licking them and taking her ecollar and her thin cloth off so one of her stitches came off and the others were loose so she had to be restitched . I don't want to risk washing her off with water and touching the wound in the process.

Yesterday was a nightmare. I spent the night wiping off the poo on the floor because she kept the sitting position and dragging her butt everywhere and now my room still smells like poo. I tried wiping the poo with a cloth and warm water but she keeps running away and meowing. What can I do to wipe off the poo off her butt? I'm so exhausted lol.

Advice on cat snatching food?

Hi all. Recently I've been noticing over the past couple of weeks that my eldest cat has been more prone to snatching food wether that be from plates during dinnertime or simply feeding her treats. I've had her for nearly 8 years and she's never been like this until recently. She's also been overgrooming herself so I initially thought this was all due to her being stressed but I'm not quite sure on what she's been stressed about as I've not changed my normal routine. I can't really go to the vets right now as they're closed due to covid so is there anything that I can do until I'm able to get her to the vets?

Story of my abandoned Pet

One day while searching for a pet dog at home my Dad came along with a cute little puppy, I don't know from where. However, unbelievably he was stollen next day. But the one who is currently showering his love and honesty onto us was once escaped from gutter by my little cousin. She just took him from roadside and feed him for four days. When one day my Mom and Dad visited their place, she requested them to take him. Well, we were already in grief of losing one they denied.

After sometime when everyone was busy in their gossip my little cutie realised her puppy is not around and was so worried. Searching for half an hour we found him sleeping behind my Dad. My Dad is so kind and animal lover, he just took him at home thinking our home is written in this Dog's destiny.

Is my cat trying to kill my puppy?

hello! i just recently got a 2month old dachshund puppy (female). i have a 4 year old dorkie (dachshund yorkie mix, male) who leaves the new puppy alone. i also have a 1 year old cat , who is very 'catlike'. she loves to chase things and hunt birds, and when she first met our new puppy she wrapped her teeth around her throat. she didnt bite down, but we stopped her before we could even see if she would. we have left them together while supervising, and the puppy gets very excited when she sees the cat. she wags her tail, and cries when she leaves. she even wants to sleep with her. my cat licks her and bites her, and she rolls around with her. she also sneaks up on her and 'attacks' her. almost everytime she does this, it ends in her biting her throat. she doesnt bite down, but on the skin. i can not leave them alone together because im afraid my cat will kill her. does my cat think my puppy is a rodent? or is she being motherly towards her? i need help! (my cat is VERY sweet and doesnt attack humans or anything)

My 5 y/o really wants a pet - suggestions for something easy to take care of?

My son has been begging for a pet for a while. His turns 5 this summer and has been saying he wants a snake. I'm not opposed to it, but looking for something that's fairly easy to care for, and would be ok in our basement. It's pretty cool down there but we could obviously have a heat lamp if needed.

I've looked into bearded dragons too and they seem like a good beginner pet as well.

Looking for any input on snakes, lizards, or any other suggestions for good beginner pets! I realize I will be the one primarily taking care of it.

Cat Howling During the Night

For the last two months, my 4.5 year old neutered male cat, Garbanzo, has been howling every night starting around 12am (shortly after we go to bed). He grabs a small cow stuffed animal (a toy he's had since kittenhood) in his teeth, and wanders around the house loudly howling. It sounds almost like he's in distress or sad about something. He's not very vocal otherwise, so it's pretty out of character. Occasionally he lies down on the floor with it and wrestles with it. We have another older male cat that has for years "masturbated" with blankets/stuffed animals, and it seems like Garbanzo is trying to do the same thing with his cow, but like...can't figure it out. The howling seems to keep going on for longer and longer each night.

At the same time, he's gotten more anxious and short tempered with the other cats in the house, which we attributed to the fact that we added a new kitten to the family in December. I would say about 95% of the time, the cats all get along fine, but he's started hissing and territory disputes (who gets to sit on the couch with us) at least once per day, which in the past only happened maybe once every couple of weeks.

We tried CBD treats to help with the anxiety, but we don't think they're having much affect, and they haven't stopped the howling that is keeping us up at night. Has anyone else seen such an intense change in behavior? Is this something a vet can help with/are there other solutions we can try to help him feel better?

Adult cat isn't affectionate, very frustrated

My parents got her when she was 5 months old, I didn't ask for her but I tried to love her anyways. I spent a lot of time with her trying to do everything right. I got her good food, I groomed her, I petted her, I played with her everyday. Now she is 6 and doesn't give a shit about anybody. She only meows for only dry food (cannot get her to eat wet) or to get me to do something. She only occasionally likes being pet. She used to purr and knead when I pet her but now she only kind of likes it when she's sleepy. Other than that she tries to get away from me when I put my hand out. No I'm not an idiot who forces pets on her. I attempt to play with her and she just doesn't care. The feral cat that I feed outside just had a major turnaround after 3 years of me feeding her and she calls me over to the door for petting. I wish I could switch them. Family cat is a spoiled brat. What can I do? Is there anything I can do? My parents don't even like her for the same reason: she's not affectionate. I'm an adult now and they are leaving the cat stuff to me but I just want a different cat. There are so many cats out there that are friendlier than her. I tried everything to bond with her but she seems like a lost cause after so many years. There are so many more affectionate cats out there, I hate that we ended up with one that just stopped caring. I don't want to put her in a shelter when they get sick of her too but I have stopped wanting her as well.

Should I get the parakeet I found checked for diseases?

This might be a silly question but my family and I found a young parakeet in our yard (obviously domesticated) We haven’t figured out where he came from but we want to keep him. The question came up though on whether or not it’s necessary to get him checked for diseases considering we found him outside. We figure he came from a pet store or something because he appears to be a baby and there’s no way he would’ve survived for long. Any advice helps!

Doggy Door entrance area

We have a doggy door and a one year old dog that chews furniture. Destroys it. We have been crating her when we leave, due to trying to save what is left of our couch, but I worry about the hours she has to spend crated. I have pondered this for weeks. Does anyone know of a way to attach dog panels or a pen that would be inside the house, attached, so when she comes in the doggy door she would be restricted to only being in a small area. I just cannot figure out how to attach something that would let her inside yet still keep her "barely" inside (kitchen area). We have a 36" gate on our laundry room that she can jump over with ease.

How do you go about finding a specific kind of dog?

I want a ridgeback/lab mix and I will it to be a puppy as they require proper training. Cursory google searches have led me to a couple ridgeback charities in the UK, but they mostly have older dogs. This poses a bit of a problem for me as when I was a kid my family dog was a ridgeback that we adopted at 2-3 years of age. Once she adjusted to us she became over protective of her household with no amount of training helping, which is why Im keen to go with a puppy this time.

So Im wondering what advice might be out there for tracking down a specific breed/mix of dog?

Advice on adopting a cat

I've been thinking of adopting a cat for awhile now. At first I was really excited then after some research I got a little worried. Now I'm terrified and overwhelmed from all the research I've done trying to figure out how to make the cat comfortable until she adjusts and some of the issues. So I've seen that giving the cat space is important at first but I live in a small apartment and have no extra rooms and my bathroom is small. So I was thinking of putting her in my bedroom because I'm only in there if I'm taking a nap or sleeping. Would that be a good idea? I know they say put the litter box somewhere where you want to keep it and I really don't want to keep it in my bedroom. Also I use a fan all the time so would that freak her out? I'm also worried about her not using the litter box and my carpet is dark so I couldn't tell if she hadn't been using it until the smell pops up. So I was thinking of laying plastic down but I think it will scare her or make her not use the box. Another thing is I'm disabled so I can't get down on the floor and talk to her and be at eye level like a lot of places recommend. Could that be a problem? Also I've seen you should take them to the vet as soon as possible but how soon is too soon? And you might need to give her a bath but how long should I wait for that? Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated.I apologize if any of this is stupid.

I’m going out of town. What do I do with my pets?

My grandma is very ill right now. I’m going to be the one that cares for her for a couple weeks. She lives in the state beside me. Still like 3 hours away. I have 2 rats, 2 bunnies and a dog. My sister will watch the bunnies. But she’s scared of the rats. I’m being my dog but I know they want let me bring anything else. I’m just worried because rabbits can go through stasis and die very fast. I might just bring a travel cage for my rats and bring them. They are in a double critter nation and that would be too much to transport.

Pet Insurance Question. Help Please

So Ive had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for 3 Years now. The policy is a $200 Annual Deductible with an 80% coverage.

Ive used it a couple times for bills around $100-$200. The issue is, I had to pay the full amount at the front. Take a picture of my bill and then send it in to get the 80% reimbursement.

My question is, what if I get a bill for $1000. I don’t have the $1000 upfront but I have the $200?

How would this work?

Thanks from me and my Cat Oliver.

Sooo I want to get an Orange Box Turtle. Any other turt people with any advice for me? I'm out in Minnesota if that affects their behavior or health.

Basically, the title says most of it. However, there are a few additional questions: if you have a box turtle, how did you get him/her? Should I be worried about salmonella? What is it like to own a box turtle?

Dogs next door

So the neighbors have 4 dogs next door and they are out there 100% of the time except at night when the owner actually picks them up and leaves. The neighbors who are there the whole time aren't the actual owners and the guy is never there. Well with the warm weather we spend more time out there. They are a constant nuisance. One has lunged at the fence towards my two year old several times. I understand that my two dogs can be little butt heads too but they aren't the ones to aggress the situation. I've talked to the neighbors and all they did was put the blame on us. It's obvious that we need to take the situation into our own hands but I'm not sure what to do here. Any advice?

My dog did something that made me very uncomfortable.

3 days ago, my dog who I love very much vomited up the corpses of two baby bunnies. The next day when he was let out into the yard I witnessed him looking through bushes and sticking his nose into the hole where the bunnies lived. I am having a lot of trouble dealing with this. I know that he is an animal who does not possess human moral codes but every time I see him I just think of their tiny bodies. He swallowed them whole and they were still very visibly baby animals. I can barely look at him and I haven't touched him since. I am not the primary caretaker of him and the rest of my family has still been interacting with him normally so he is not being neglected. I just want to know how to get over this so that I can have a normal relationship with my dog again.

What did my kitten say to me?

My kitten (who is sleeping on my lap) just stood up, put a paw on my chest, meowed kinda weirdly (like, it sounded kind of hoarse? Idk) and then laid back down purring loudly. What did she say to me? Should I be worried?

Found my two cats biting a bat

I let my cats outside to my back yard. Today, I saw them playing with and biting a bat, possibly thinking of eating it.

I live in the Midwest of USA. My cats are 1.5 years old and had their rabies shot in November. I'm more worried about COVID. Do American bats carry COVID?

I've washed their faces and paws with sanitizer. What else do I need to do to keep them and myself safe?

I put my cat down last night and can't unsee it.

I've never had to put a pet down before and I feel traumatized by it.

I keep thinking about how badly she wanted to go home and get out of the cage during the car ride. As soon as she saw me come into the room she perked herself up like it was time to go and started trying to get off the table. I got down to eye level with her and we pressed our heads together and I kept telling her that I loved her. Then her head lowered into the blanket and she never came back up.

I can't unsee her scared, wrapped in a blanket with all of that equipment attached to her. Mentally she wanted to stay so badly, but physically she was suffering. Then seeing the medicine go into her and her face go down into the blanket and never come back up.

I have a therapist that I see every Wednesday, so I do have professional help...But does anyone else have any advice on how to get through this and see the happy times instead? It keeps popping into my head and I keep bursting into tears. I'm scared this is going to happen around strangers.

Cat is probably dying, but not in pain.

Please don't be a jerk in the comments. I've taken him to our normal vet on Sat and the Emergency vet on Sun.

My cat is probably dying. I'm writing this post as he lays in my lap.

He doesn't seem to be in pain. That was also the vet's assessment. Something is wrong with the part of his brain that controls balance. If we did an MRI, which would require full anaesthesia, we might know more. There's a small chance it would be something treatable. Most likely there's nothing we could do.

When he walks or we carry him, he gets nauseous. This makes him drool uncontrollably. That's probably why he stopped eating. And his weight was already low because he is pretty picky and was just recovering from an acute spell of a chronic illness.

So, he's probably dying. But we don't think he's in pain. I left him in a room with food for a bit this afternoon (have to lock him up because our other cat is a food vacuum). Came back and he was waiting by the door. I sat down in the room and he stumbled over to me after 30 min or an hour. I put him on my lap, and he's been there ever since.

He won't eat, so there isn't anything we can really do. We've been applying a topical treatment that might or might not stimulate his appetite.

But he's probably dying. At 4 or 5 or 6. I don't know. We adopted him as a young adult two years ago.

While he's enjoying my lap or still stumbling over to sunny rugs, I'll just keep hanging out with him. It's not clear when to make a judgement call on putting him down. I wish I could ask him. But he's still social, so I think he is choosing to still live for now. That was the vet's advice. Just see if he's still responsive and enjoying things he enjoys.

This is really tough.

Here's a tip for cat owners that buy World's Best Cat Litter!

I love WBCL, because I'm not into clay litter. Like, at all. That said, I do NOT like the price very much. I read somewhere that WBCL is nothing more than chicken feed (essentially just finely ground feed corn), so I went to my local Tractor Supply Company and found a 50 lb bag of chicken feed for $10. I get home, bust the sucker open and IT'S THE SAME THING as WBCL. All they're doing is buying it wholesale and rebagging it as litter.

I prefer the lavender scented litter, so I'm going to order some bulk dried lavender to grind up in there.

Idk where else you could buy it, if you don't have a Tractor Supply close to you. But I promise you, it's worth it.

Kitten won't stop messing with our dog

We have a new kitten, and a older small dog. The kitten simply won't leave the dog alone, treating is as an above-average cat toy, always jumping on it, that kind of thing. Nothing super-agro, but it's getting on the dog's nerves.

What can we do to train the cat away from doing this?
