Teaching cat to swim?

So I have an adopted Maine Coon that I would like to teach to swim/ get more comfortable with water. He’s about a year old and freaks out scratches, cries, and starts breathing rapidly when I give him baths. Wondering if anyone has come up with anything that works any advice; appreciate it!

Dog bite

I have a question. Yesterday I got bit by me neighbors dog. Anyways without going into it all, I am just wondering if dog bites can cause nerve damage. It wasn’t deep enough to go the the er or anything. But it did break skin. The dog has all of his shots though. It’s just been 24 hours and I can still barely move my arm! I don’t want to be dramatic and go to the doctor over this if it is normal. I have never been bit by an animal like this. So I’m not sure what’s normal and what’s not. The area is very swollen, bruised and kind of numb around it still. I’ll include a picture.

I'm dog sitting my neighbors dog, but she refuses to go out of the house with me without the owner.

So next week I'm supposed to dog sit this older Shepherd for a couple days, which involves taking her on her daily walks. However she absolutley refuses to leave the house without the owner. Even if I get her outside the door, she wont make another step without the owner. Once I get her in my car or we are already walking, its fine, but getting her to leave a place she's familiar with is impossible. Any advice? She is not influenced by treats. She see's straight through them.

Best way to get a dog to STOP barking.

I have a cockapoo. He barks at everything. When a car pulls in the driveway, he barks. When anyone comes through the door, he barks. Even when someone will simply sit on a chair, he'll bark like crazy because he occasionally gets pet. I tell him to stop, I've tried an ultrasonic sound emitter, and he just seems to continue barking. I think he has a nervous bark because if I get him to stop he begins to almost cry. What's the best method to make him stop?

Why does my cat have blue on her skin?

So my cat got spayed exactly a month ago. Her incision healed fine and it's closed now but a week ago I noticed she's been getting a blue color around her incision and tattoo. The vet said it's normal bruising that happens to pale skin cats after spaying but idk it looks like if someone grabbed a blue sharpie and colored around her belly. Has anyone else's cat had this?

Dog is shaking and throwing up! Help!

I’m on mobile so sorry for any issues this may cause. My moms almost 2 year old staffy has been sick the last couple of days. It started with vomiting but he was still his normal bubbly self so we decided to just keep a close eye on it.

Then the vomiting increased, frequency and volume. Its not food or anything, the vomit is clear and mucus like and there is A LOT.

Over the course of last evening and into today we noticed that he is shaking almost constantly. He is lethargic and does not want to play with the other dogs.

My stepdad took him to the vet this morning who said that he doesn’t have a fever and most likely ate something he shouldn’t have. They instructed us to give him pedialyte or Gatorade and they gave him a couple of medications and want him to go back tomorrow to do X-rays (to see if there’s something lodged in his digestive tract).

That being said, I want to keep him as comfortable as possible for the time being. I gave him his own space in the house away from the other dogs. I also set up a space heater as it seems to be helping with the shaking some (maybe he’s cold?).

Has anyone ever experienced this with their pup before? Is there anything I can do about the constant shaking? Do I need to get a second opinion? I’m just really worried about him :(

Notes: Two other dogs in the household are not sick. He is up to date on all shots/vaccinations. And is neutered if that makes a difference.

Can someone explain the idea/reason for owning reptiles as pets?

Genuinely curious here to why people decide to keep reptiles as pets.

Let's take a dog for example. These animals can show love and affection. Some more so then others, but generally speaking a dog is going to be kind to you if you are kind to them. They're loyal animals, will defend you, help you if they can. You can play with them, cuddle, call them and they will keep you company, go on walks.

Now what does say a snake offer you? It's usually being kept in a small glass box which i consider somewhat cruel in terms of how "free" these animals are. They're usually being fed live mice which again, is cruel and not natural and for the life of me i can't figure out why you'd want to satisfy at such a cost. Let me know what you think!

Questions about my two cats

So we've had one of our cats for about 6 months. He's about 1 year old, super sweet, loves to play (even fetch? wat) always greets at the door when we get home, only thing is he get's lonely when nobody is home. So we decided to adopt another one. This one is a female, about 3 years old. Shes like half his size and sweet as can be... with people. Both are spayed and neutered.

When there's food they can be face to face no problem. But she doesnt like to play like he does. So anytime he tries to play with her she hisses and growls. He has no ill intent but she keeps getting aggressive. We even have a separate room just for her with her own food and litter box. It has glass doors so she can see outside too and when she gets snippy we close the doors with her in there to give her alone time.

They've known eachother about a month and have improved a lot but are stagnant with this attitude from her. We dont want to give her up, but if this continues we might have to.

Any tips on how to help solve this? <3 (if anything is confusing let me know and ill clear it up).

Cone trama

My dog had surgery on his leg Friday and they said I have to leave the cone on him 24/7 for next 2 weeks. Thing is he's so freaked out by it and thrashes around banging his leg. When I take him potty he wont go cuz he can't sniff the perfect spot.

He's not messing with the wound at all for the moment. I decided only to put it on him when I sleep or leave the house. He's much happier without it. Hes literally a Velcro dog, by my side every minute and I work from home. Am I setting myself up for disaster? Or will he begin to mess with it more as it heals and gets itchy ? Vet would not budge telling me leave it on all the time. Am I being stubborn and selfish not heeding vets advice like my partner has accused me of ?

Outside cat had kittens, moving in 4 days

We have an outdoor cat who's been pregnant for a while. This is her 3rd litter and she's been huge. The kittens are either fat or there are quite a few of them.

Every time they've moved in the past few years they've caught her with a trap and just brought her with them to the new house and let her be outside there and she's never ran away from them. But she's never been pregnant while they moved or had kittens right before they moved.

We were hoping to catch her before she had the kittens and before we moved, but now she has definitely had some of her kittens if not all of them.

She's eating and acting fine, but we're scheduled to completely move in 4 days. She isn't letting us near her so catching her will prove to be even more difficult now than it has been.

My thought was maybe if we could catch her while she's eating or something that maybe we could put her on one of those harnesses and a leash and she would go to her kittens eventually and we could get them before we move. But I don't know how well that will work.

It also looks almost as if maybe she didn't have all of the kittens. I'm a vet assistant, so if I could get close enough to her, I could check if there's any kittens left. But, she isn't letting anyone near enough to her.

Any advice is welcome.

I'll also add that we have 12 inside cats. They've moved before a few years ago and all handle moving to a new place really well. But in the place we live now, they have an entire room just for them. The new house is smaller. Any tips on that would be appreciated too.

My cat wants to be an outdoor cat, but she is way too small and we live in a big neighborhood.

Hey r/Pets, I have been having this problem ever since I got my cat Ava about 3 years ago. she is a tortoiseshell cat who is the size of a kitten, and she probably will not grow anymore. She is the cutest little thing ever, but she has been a huge hassle. Whenever someone opens a door, she tries to run outside. She loves the outdoors, whenever we have a window open or take the curtain off the sliding glass door, she always sunbathes and takes in the sights. I can tell she would love to be an outdoor cat, but I just can’t let her. She is so little, a hawk can easily come and pick her up, our neighborhood is very big and active, so cars and other animals are also a worry, she loves to climb, we have found her in trees and on our roof before when we accidentally let her out, and she isn’t chipped. Is there anything I can do to stop her from running away? Having to watch her closely whenever we have company or whenever we are moving furniture is really stressful, and I really don’t want her roaming around our yard unless we really have to.

TL;DR My little cat keeps running outside, and I don’t think it is possible to let her be an outdoor cat. How can I get her to stop running and stressing me out?

Cat suddenly hissing at the other after move

I have two cats that have always gotten along, they even cuddle like humans do! I just moved to anew apartment. Nothing crazy just down to a 1 bedroom. We had them in the bathroom with all their stuff while we moved things and did a little unpacking yesterday and let them out to explore for a few hours before bed.

Now, we are noticing one of our cats (Belle) hissing at the other (Ariel) when she tries to come out. Ariel has always been a little scared of everything, so her hiding under the coaches for a bit last night and this morning didn’t seem odd. However, we’ve seen Belle hiss at her multiple times now when she starts to come out and explore. This is brand new and hasn’t really been a thing since we brought Ariel home from the shelter.

How to help my cat adjust to a new home?

Hey Reddit,

My boyfriend and I moved from an apartment to a townhouse yesterday, and we brought my cat (obviously!). Renegade has been terrified since we got him in yesterday afternoon, hiding under his armchair. I put him in one of our spare bedrooms with his litter box, and food and water dishes, and he refuses to come out from under his chair (it’s exclusively his chair and where he slept most of the time at the old apartment). He hasn’t used his box or eaten or drank anything since yesterday.

I know it will be an adjustment for him, but I really feel terrible that’s he’s so terrified and won’t come out, even with coaxing. I have gotten him out a few times, picked him up and snuggled him and then he immediately wants back under the chair. I’m worried about him not using the box or eating and drinking.

What can I do to help him beyond what I’ve already done? He’s also petrified by the ceiling fans in 2 of the bedrooms and thankfully the room he’s currently in doesn’t have one.

I love this wee kitteh more than anything and wasn’t expecting this reaction from him as he is usually very sassy and confident.

Help on getting two cats to get along

Okay so I’ve had my lady cat mufasa for a few years and had to move in to my moms house. She has been so scared and basically can’t leave my room. It was previously the room where fat cat (marina) stayed. I’ve tried leaving the door open so they can get used to each other but fat cat just beats up mufasa and then she gets scared and I can’t even pick her up or she’ll try to scratch me. My mom wants me to get rid of her but I love my kitty. I nursed her back to health after some turd abandoned her at a gas station and I don’t plan to live with my mom forever at all, though there’s no foreseeable time where I will have a place of my own. Despite this I think it’s unfair of her to request that I abandon mufasa bc it is inconvenient for her currently.

I feel bad bc I know that it was fat kitty’s room first, but they fought prior to her being put in there after I had my twins.

I know that cats are pretty territorial. But if anything helps I’d be eternally grateful. I will not get rid of my cat. I will never leave anyone behind that I love, especially an animal that wouldn’t be able to conceive why it has been left.

I’ve tried looking stuff up online but google doesn’t seem to comprehend my questions very well.

Best pet insurance for two cats?

I've looked through only a handful of posts on here re: pet insurance, they don't have many comments, so I was hoping to garner a little more on this post.

We have two cats, one is 2 the other is about 6. We don't currently have pet insurance, but I'd really like to find something that has good coverage, but doesn't have a seriously high monthly payment.

I've heard Figo and Nationwide are pretty good, but are there any other recommendations/experiences? And do any help a little more in regards to dental care? It seems no one wants to even touch on cat dental and that's the most expensive piece of the puzzle for our one cat.

I don't know anything about rabbits but I heard a story and I want input

My husband said he and his brother had a rabbit when he was young. He said he was traumatized because one day he and his brother were playing with it and the rabbit started acting weird so they put it in its cage, then it started frantically running in circles and collapsed and died right there. He was pretty young so doesn't remember exactly what happened or what else was going on.

Any thoughts on what the heck happened? Anyone seen rabbits do something like this? He told this to me like a major confession that he killed their rabbit but doesn't know what he did. I tried to tell him maybe the rabbit was sick or something and I'm sure he didn't do anything wrong, but I don't know anything about rabbits so he doesn't believe me.

Chinese family bought 2 ducks for a Kid. I want to actaully care for them because they want to keep them . Need some advice

Hello,

Today me and my Chinese host family went to a market in her hometown and someone related to them bought for my little host sister 2 baby ducks. I was shocked when I saw how they would sell coloured baby chicken and baby ducks as toys for kids. They put them in platsic bags, when you bought them. The Family found it funny and it honestly made me really mad. So now they want to raise them and they don't know anything about any pets. They choked them when they picked them up and just let them fall on the floor from their hands. I don't want them to just die.

So is here someone who could help me recommend some stuff for the ducks and give me more advice. :)

Hi guys, I’m cat sitting for a friend for the first time and my cat is TERRIFIED of him. What can I do? :(

Today’s the first day he’s in my house... I had him walking around near me, he doesn’t like my little chihuahua but my dog always listens to me... it’s the opposite with my cat. When my cat saw him, he wasn’t afraid but she was hissing and growling and puffing up (she’s the sweetest and I can’t remember the last time she did that.) So I put him in my room with the baby gate up (he has his litter box in here as well as his food, water and his crate.)

When I tried to console my cat after putting him in my room, she was reacting to me the same way as him. My poor girl, I backed off but then I smelled her ‘terrified’ scent. Broke my heart. :(

I want him to be comfortable but sorry, my kitty is important too. What can I do? I don’t want him to be locked up in here the whole week but I also don’t want a fight to break out or my cat to have a heart attack... she’s an older kitty

Thanks everyone

[Advice] Newly adopted dog immediately goes to the bathroom when left alone

Yesterday, my husband and I adopted a 2 y/o female dog from the shelter. I wanted to get a feel for how she will do when she'll be left at home on Monday, so last night I created her in the bedroom with the lights on and closed the door for two minutes. I could hear that she was whimpering, and when I had opened the door she had peed and pooped in the crate.

The crate that we have is too big for her because we bought it for our 3 year old chow mix who is much larger. I ordered a small crate on Amazon but it won't be here until Monday. The shelter warned me that using too large a crate might encourage them to use the bathroom in it, but I really just wanted to see how she felt about being crated.

Today, I wanted to see how she would do at home alone again. This time, I left her in the living room and closed off all the other doors. I left through the front door and waited for one minute. Again, I could hear her distressed whimpering, and she was scratching at the door. She didn't use the bathroom at all, so I considered it a success.

We tried again, this time for two minutes and when I came back in, she had peed at the front door (luckily we have wood floors). I'm not sure I'd there's a better way that we can be handling this or if we will just have to wait for her to learn that every time we leave we will be back.

Monday will be the first day she will be home alone. My husband and I are grad students, but live two blocks away from the university. I usually leave at 7:40 am, and my husband leaves around 9:15. Then we're both home for lunch from 12pm-1:30pm. Then I'm home at 4:30.

We didn't have this issue with our Chow. He really enjoyed crate training and was able to be left at home alone pretty quickly after we adopted him. Can anyone offer any advice?

how to socialize cats?

Recently i adopted a domestic shorthair cat, and she has been with us three weeks, and is never aggressive and is actually extremely tolerant of everything, except dogs. We have two dogs, both are one year, Australian Shepard and Golden retrievers mixes. They are outside dogs, and have free roam of the backyard and we take them on three walks a day, and are generally passive, and my room is tied to the garage, where 90% of the time my cat is there. We take the dogs out in the morning, and bring them in at 8 PM in the garage to sleep. My cat will stare at the dogs coming through, and if they get a little bit close she will hiss aggressively, and my dogs will bolt immediately in the garage. I tried socialization with a screen door, my cat let out a small sad noise, started at the dog, and went back to me and sat with me, and one of my dogs went to the floor and laid there and my other dog started crying and kept crying whenever the cat made eye contact with him, what do I do?

But I’m getting worried, I loved the cats that went missing so much but I’m scared because I don’t know they’ll come back? Does anyone have an experience like this or have an answer? Anything is greatly appreciated thanks! (If info of the cats is needed both are feral ,one is pretty small I believe 2 - 3 years old and the other one is big and I believe 4 - 6 years old and the small one I use to let in during cold days but put him back outside at night time. Could that have made him go missing?)

Pet stories and the impact they leave behind. (Please read carefully)

Hi guys, I don't really tend to post much on Reddit but I'm looking for some help, I'm a final year graphic design and illustration student based in Ireland, I'm looking into doing a project on the relationship between pets and their owners in a therapeutic sense. I'm hoping to maybe find some short stories or experiences where your pet has helped you through a rough or hard time in your life, and translate that into a small book with and a hand drawn illustration / portrait of the said pet, just to give the stories a face and a way to memorialize your pet.

I'm looking into this because it's my final project until i graduate and I had a very touching experience with my cat at a dark time in my life, and I think it only fair for me to share my story if I'm expecting you to share yours.

it's going to be a bit long and I will go into some details but it will all come together by the end;

So back in 2012 I was attacked by two drunk guys when I was on my way home, I had some serious dental damage done and went straight to A&E. The next day I went to the police to make a statement, described the main guy who attacked me and they told me that they knew exactly who he was, that he was from a bad family and that he was no stranger to them, but the fact that he was 17 at the time meant that he probably wouldn't get more than a slap on the wrist and that the repercussions for me following up might not be worth it. out of fear of that I talked to my mum who agreed that it wouldn't be worth it and to drop it. So i did. But after that everything had changed. I used to be a very outgoing, almost fearless where I'd walk everywhere (my town isn't very big so everything like a 20 minute walk from my house) but I was so scared that I'd see them again that I pretty much became a recluse. I stopped going out pretty much for weeks at a time, and if i did go anywhere It would be with my mum. This lead to a lot of my friendships falling apart because people tried to get me to go out and get over it but I just couldn't and it got to the point where they stopped asking me out, and talking to me all together. Looking back now I can see why, I was a mess, I was always depressed, I was scared and I just felt so alone.

Around this time our family had a cat, Pickles who was maybe 2 at the time. Now I was always very distant with her because my mum had my dog re-homed about two months before we got her, and for whatever reason I resented and almost blamed Pickles for him being gone. But over time the fact I wasn't leaving the house meant I was around her a lot more, which meant she would come into my room and roll around on the floor until I'd pet her. This developed over time to where she was in my room almost all day everyday, when I left my room she followed me, when I went back upstairs she followed me back up and idk, it was like she was my shadow. It turned into this thing where If she wasn't there It was an abnormality and I'd panic and look for her. She in a way became my constant company and when i had her around things were better, I wasn't so alone. It got to the point where my family would make jokes saying pickles was my gaybie (gay baby).

Anyways, go on a few years and things started to get better, but pickles was always a constant in my life, I never really grew out of not leaving my house but in time i was getting better about it. Pickles was starting to get sick so I brought her to the vet and they told me she had a heart murmur, that there was medication that could help but wouldn't cure it. Of course I was like "no she's going to be okay, i'll make sure she's okay". So she was on the medication for and things started to go back to normal. About 2 months pass and I'm woken up by my sister who tells me she heard a thud in my mum's room and she thinks it was pickles. So I go to check what it was and sure enough it was Pickles, she must have fallen off my mum's bed and had a heart attack and died instantly, because when i found her she was still very warm and limp. I just sat on my mum's bedroom floor and held her in my arms sobbing until she started to go stiff, it must have been a couple of hours but eventually I got a blanket and an old cardboard box I had sitting around and wrapped her up and put her in it. It was night time by this time and my mum had come home and we made plans to go to the vet in the morning to get her cremated. I didn't have the money to get her cremated by herself so I could get her ashes, but to get her cremated with other pets, it was 50 euro which I could pay, of course If i had the money I would have got her ashes to keep but it just wasn't something I could do at the time and there wasn't a chance I was asking anyone in my family for help, especially because It kind of became a bit of a mockery where my family would make remarks like "I can't believe you're going to pay 50 euro to get her cremated when you just put her in the bin". It was around that time I just knew no one really understood how much Pickles meant to me and how much she did for me emotionally, if it wasn't for that cat I don't even know where I would be right now. she got me through some of the hardest times in my life so far.

As you can imagine this destroyed me and made it to the point where I got severely depressed, much more so than I had ever been before (I didn't even mourn like this when my grandparents died and no one could understand why i was so emotionally invested in this cat but there was no use in trying to defend or talk about it, they had no idea just how much she had helped to heal me and just how alone I felt, and I knew it would come to the same "its only a cat" conversation and I just wasn't able for that argument.

A few weeks went by and my best friend at the time (she lives in Tennessee) organised with a few mutual friends to get a portrait commission done of Pickles for my birthday, and honestly it was one of the sweetest things that anyone had ever done for me. The artist she hired did two, one of pickles alone and one of her and I together. I have them both framed and they're two of my favorite things I own.

https://i.redd.it/ve3d76f36bp21.jpg

She also added this small card, which really touched my heart and really did help me heal especially knowing that someone else out there understood what Pickles meant to me:

https://i.redd.it/fzwkblcq6bp21.png

So that's my story, the reason I want this to be my final year project which will be on exhibition to the public, to let them know just how much our pets can mean to us, that they can heal us, and I know that I'm not the only one out there who has had a relationship to a pet like this, that they're something to be celebrated and something that will always matter.

If you do have a story or a memory and a photograph of your pet, please share it with me either below this thread or in a private message and help me bring this project into fruition.

Thank you all <3

Neutered pup still humps everything in sight!

My girlfriend and I decided that we would re-home a dog after having rescued a cat to provide animals a happy and safe home.

His name is Petey, he is a 3 year old American Staffordshire/Jack Russel Terrier mix.

He's a wonderful, very smart and energetic dog. A little ADHD at times, but we love him!

Recently, he has started attempting to hump everything and anything that moves.

What, if anything, do we/can we do besides just deal with it?

Thanks for the responses and suggestions!

TL;DR: 3 year old neutered dog will not stop humping everything that lives and breathes!

Best ways to introduce a new dog to a blind cat?

My GF and I recently moved in together. I've since befriended her cat. We've discussed either getting another cat or a dog. The other day while looking at pets in local shelters and foster orgs, we found a puppy we both like and is good with cats.

If we end up getting approved for the puppy's adoption, I want to make sure we are able to introduce the two in a way that will not be a problem for the cat, who is 13 and blind. He is shy until he gets used to you, then he is chatty. Any suggestions?

Pooches on pot? Kitties on cannabis? Vet says this could soon be a reality

Am I making the right decision to euthanize my dog at this time?

My dog Logan is twelve years old. I adopted him six years ago, and since then he has rarely left my side.

Almost a year ago, I had to put my other senior dog to sleep after he began to have clustered seizures, the final ones being incredibly violent. That decision, though painful, was easy to make as those seizures were horrifying and my wife and I could not bear to watch him suffer like that.

With Logan, it's harder.

His decline began with general incontinence. He would pee and poop in his sleep, which, though gross, was something we could simply clean and he was an otherwise happy dog.

Then his walking slowed because of arthritis. He just can't handle the long walks we used to take and now I can barely walk slow enough to keep his pace.

A couple of months ago, he started getting picky with his food, which was unlike him as he used to eat absolutely anything. We switched his diet multiple times to whatever he would eat, but lately getting him to eat is a chore, and he won't eat anything of nutritional value.

My wife is a veterinary technician and re-ran some bloodwork on him a couple of days ago. His kidneys are in rough shape from the medications he has been on. She says the values are in line with patients she's had that were in stage 3 renal failure.

She has discussed all of this with the doctors she works with and they agree that the time is soon, but believed we may be able to have a few more weeks with him.

But my wife and I talked it out, and we believe we are going to make the final decision on Sunday. As it stands now, he will only eat certain foods willingly and only under seemingly arbitrary conditions. The past two weeks, I've had to bathe him every other day or so because he would fall in his own poop. He gets up in the night and just pees. It almost seems like he can't control it anymore. Neither my wife nor I have seen him wag his tail for a while either.

It's hard because sometimes he perks up and will show excitement. Sometimes we will find something he wants to eat and he will gobble it down like old times. Though slow, he can still get up and walk, which we can see he still enjoys.

But overall the past two weeks have been painful and exhausting. He has already visibly lost weight and we don't want to see him starve to death. It's tiring to constantly have to clean up after him or bathe him when he can't really support himself in the tub. We don't want it to get to the point where we regret not having euthanized sooner.

Just as I am sure your dogs mean the world to you, I can't imagine life without him, but I don't think I can do this anymore. I am losing sleep and lately I have spent my commutes to work crying.

I guess I just need some objective validation from the outside. Am I doing what's best for my dog?

7 tips which you absolutely must bear in mind before acquiring a cat

My girlfriends dog keeps attacking me unprovoked then acts like I’ve hit him when others are around, what can I do to stop this?

My girlfriend has a 14 year old Chihuahua Mix and they recused him when he was around 2-3 years old they aren’t really sure as even the original owners didn’t know. He doesn’t like to be picked up unless it’s by my girlfriend and he also has awful breath.

My girlfriend and I have been together for two years and about one year in, I moved into her family home to cut down on rent while I worked and went to school. Jack, the dog, always slept in my girlfriends bed by her head (I have dogs myself and I’m not comfortable with my own to do this, let alone someone else’s) however when I started to sleep over, I requested that she keep him on her side of the bed away from my face as I didn’t have that much trust in him. This was no issue until his breath started to make me nauseous half way through the night. We brought him to a vet and they pretty much just blamed it on him being old. She doesn’t have a big room and he breathes heavily through his mouth and it fills up the room within an hour or two and smells rank.

At this time about three weeks into me being moved in, we started to make the dog sleep out in the hallway between all the bedroom. Jack became very attached to her mother at this point and would push his bed into her room and up by her bed. And now If I entered her room even if she wasn’t in there, he would fly off the handle and start to bark and growl and snarl at me. And wouldn’t stop until he was put into the kennel with a blanket over it. Then he would cry and poop and pee so they would be forced to take him out and clean it while he ran back up to his bed.

The first incident happened when we were sitting on the couch. I had my feet up on the couch and my girlfriend came over and put my legs in her lap, jack jumped up beside her and laid down. I fell asleep and didn’t move out of position until jack latched onto my foot and wouldn’t let go. Her brother had to come downstairs and put his hands around the dogs jaw and pretty rip his teeth off my foot. My girlfriend even attested to my side saying I hadn’t stirred in my sleep enough to startle him and that he had preemptively been growling while looking at me. Her mother did not believe either of us, just said ‘weird but doesn’t sound like Jack’ and dismissed it.

Several incidents followed and anytime I would come home and no one else was, he runs at me and tries to bite me. Once he had been hiding by the wall on the other side of the porch growling but I couldn’t see him and thought he was at the top of the stairs giving me enough time to turn the light on and he would run away to his bed again, however, as soon as I stepped out of the porch he latched onto my toe and I had to kick my foot around to get him off then he proceeded to poop on the couch and carpet stairs while lifting his leg and pissing everywhere before taking off upstairs. I wrapped my toe up and went up stairs after him to kennel him. He started to go crazy and was lunging at me so I grabbed the blanket from his bed, wrapped him up and picked him up and put him in the kennel which he proceeded to ram his head and threw himself against the sides. It was insane I was crying on the phone with my girlfriend and she could hear him going savage in the crate. She came home and I ended up needing stitches in two toes and part of my foot.

The worst part is, is that he will act scared when there are others and me around. He gets on like a bratty child trying to blackmail me. It sounds stupid but it drives me insane. If her mother is around he will shake and whimper but if I try to sit on the couch with her he will growl and she has to tell him to knock it off.

The most recent incident is the worst and I don’t want to be around this dog at all whether it’s alone or not. I put the dog food into the bowl, and I leave it there for him to come get. I don’t go after him to come down because I don’t want him to feel cornered. I was sat on the couch and needed to run upstairs to the bedroom so I began to walk up the stairs and as soon as I made the turn to go up the next flight, he charged at me snarling. I hate to say I did this but I did it, I put my hand out and gave him a tap on the snout and screamed at him to get back. He retreated back to his bed in my girlfriends moms room. I went into our bedroom as came out to see him blocking the bathroom, the only bathroom in the house. I picked up a towel went towards him, I didn’t hold it like I was going to throw it over him, just held it over my arm. I told him to move and pointed to his bed but he didn’t budge. I needed to use the bathroom as I advanced towards him. Backed into the corner growling and I just opened the door and stepped over him and slammed it before he could nip at my ankles. I heard a trickle and then saw pee coming in from under the door. I opened it and he was mid poop and then ran into the bedroom and pooped his whole way in. I cleaned it up and as soon as I bent down he charged back at me and latched onto my scalp and hair. I wish I was making this shit up but it was the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced. And people have said “oh it’s a chihuahua how bad could it hurt” it fucking hurt, a lot. He ended up ripping a small chunk out of my scalp and when I got him off my head and threw him back towards the bedroom, he got back up and ran back at me. I was sobbing on the floor with dog poop in my hands trying to stop the bleeding on my head when he reached me again and grabbed my hand that reached out to push him away. He ended up cracking off one of his teeth while biting my pinkie and ring finger of my left hand and fractured my pinkie. I ended up with 7 stitches in my head, and 6 in my hand and a split. I’m a makeup artist, my job literally requires my dominant hand which is now decommissioned for the next coming weeks.

This happened two days ago now whenever the dog sees or hears me he starts to howl and growl at me. I am genuinely scared of this dog and I know my girlfriends family wouldn’t have believed me if it wasn’t for the security camera they had installed after a recent string of neighbourhood break-ins.

Her mother keeps blaming it on ‘he’s old, he’s a rescue, he’s only protecting us, he feels like she’s a threat’ is it even worth getting a trainer to look at him?

The attacks only started to happen about 7 months into me living there, I had known the dog for about a year before the first attack. I walked him, feed him, even bathed him and played with him. Sounds dumb but I feel betrayed.

Is there anything worth doing? Her mother already said putting the dog down is not an option regardless of this happening several times. I just feel like I’m the bad guy. What could have happened that he suddenly just went psycho? I want to stay with my girlfriend but it’s causing strain on our relationship as I know hate this dog and don’t want it near me while the dog wants to be near her but not me.

Any advice please

Aggressive cat intent on attacking my dog on our walks and has now started staring at him through the glass at home. Help!

Hello, everyone. I have a small, old dog with a heart condition. He's a pretty chill dog... friends with all the dogs in the neighbourhood and ignores all the cats we come across our walks. Recently, this big cat with one missing eye and a scar down that side of his face started stalking him on our walks.

This is starting to escalate. When we were out yesterday, this cat skulked down and started slowly creeping up on him (I know this is the classic pose for cats before they attack because I used to have a cat). My dog was oblivious, but I started panicking a little. So I tried hissing at it, then, when that produced zero result, stomping and yelling at it. It kinda paused at this point, then sat down, then started bounding at us again. I had nothing with me except a bottle of water, so I threw all the water in there at it while yelling some more and stomping. The water stopped it again. At this point, I picked up my dog, and keeping my eye on the cat, walked home.

This morning, we found the cat outside in our garden less than a meter from my dog, who was indoors, staring through the glass at him. So now, I can't let him out in the garden without me being there in case the cat's there. And I don't know what to do in case the cat tries to attack again. I don't want to have to resort to attacking the cat back, but all the yelling, stomping, water isn't deterring it.

The cat belongs to someone in the neighbourhood. It has a tag around its neck, but I don't know who.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

Moving into a new house that does not allow pets .. not sure what to do with my cat - hiding him is not an option anymore

I don’t have much connection to him- I kind of took the cat after my sister abandoned it. I just want to leave him in a place where he’ll likely be safe.. all he does for fun is go outside anyway. The only interaction anyone in my family has with him is to feed him and clean out his litter.

He can probably survive on his own (he’s lived outside for weeks at a time on a couple occasions) but I know that just abandoning him is a last-resort option .... any ideas?

When your dog is really stupid

So I wanted to share this story because it’s really funny

F-father D1- dog 1 D2- dog 2

So this happened a couple of weeks ago and it’s pretty interesting. So d1 and d2 know they have to show f when they have to use the bathroom so someone can take them outside. But one day d1 decides not to show f he needs to do his business, but he instead did #2 in front of f. Then when f tried to go smack d1 for being a “bad dog” d1 shows his teeth. F still goes for him and d1 then attempts to bite f. D2 has been sitting there the whole time and when she saw f going for d1 she started whining. When d1 attempts to bite f, f gets really mad and picks d1 up. Then f takes d1’s cage and puts d1 in there and lock the door shut. F then puts d1 and d1’s cage out in the cold garage for about an hour. This isn’t normal so the garage as a punishment for this. I thought it was a really stupid and funny story so I decided to share it! Thanks for reading and have a nice day/night.

Cat allowed hotels in Las Vegas on/near the strip?

I am moving with my boyfriend and his cat and we'll be passing through Las Vegas. We are staying in Vegas for a day or two, but the problem is that a lot of "pet-friendly" hotels on the strip are specifically dogs-only.

Are there any good cat friendly hotels on, or as close as possible to the strip? He was declawed by a previous owner and is pretty chill if that helps.

Last Update on Lost Cat

I woke up with morning to see if my lost cat was still on the site. It is no longer on the site so I know they adopted him to someone. I hope the person who did adopt him enjoys him in the way I did. But I hope they learn the truth about how the people behind the site did not bother to reunite him with his previous owner. If anyone wants to know what site I am talking about, sent me a dm and I’ll tell you.

But I am looking into adopting from the ASPCA who has great reviews on yelp.

Asking for a friend - cat is destructive, what to do?

I have a friend who have just one cat and is getting fed up, ready to send the cat off to no-kill shelter. She rescued a 2 year old gray tabby from Colorado about a month ago, give or take.

Basically, there is no history to the cat, but records show that she was taken in from outdoors. This cat might be accustomed to outdoor life than indoor life.

The main issue is that the cat chews on anything, everything. Litter mat, plants, pull boy foam ball, even her bed sheet.

She have provided toys, catnips, some mental games for food, and more. She is active and healthy, but just destructive. Alone or not.

What do you suggest?

One of our kittens is bullying the other kitten and it's not improving months later

We adopted two kittens from the same shelter 5 months ago. They knew each other already and spent a lot of time together, and we were recommended to adopt them as a pair. One is now about 11 months and the other is about 9 months.

The younger one is quite dominant and self-confident while the older one is a lot gentler and more cautious. The younger cat likes to annoy us for any kind of attention, such as scratching the back of the TV and scraping down the wallpaper. She gets a lot of attention from us already but her hunger for it feels limitless some days.

She attacks the older one on a daily basis. Unprovoked attacks that usually end up with her having a mouthful of the other cat's fur, and the other cat shrieking until we separate them. Occasionally she fights back, once or twice she has even won, but mostly she makes it pretty clear that she wants nothing to do with it. The younger cat ignores this and crosses the line over and over again until we put them in separate rooms for a while.

They can be quite friendly together most days too, usually sleeping on our bed together and cleaning each other.

We live in the inner city and the cats don't have outside access. We are working on solving this but it'll like take another 3-5 months. We're wondering if the younger cat just has too much energy for an apartment and will do anything to release it on anything or anybody.

We're wondering if this is normal and if it's likely to improve, or if it's a behavioural issue we need to address more seriously.

Chronic kidney failure and food

My (16yrs) cat has kidney failure, he was put into fluids every other day and was very skinny. Since he got a bit better and chubbier, now we’re giving him fluids 2 times a week, and also a vitamin. So, I noticed him loosing weight again, other than that he seemed fine (drinking water, playing, running around). He always meow at me for food when he’s hungry and his bowl is empty, and he did that the last 2 days even during the night, and his bowl was full. I ended up giving him renal wet food, cause I guessed something was up with the dry one?! And he ate it SO FAST and the whole package, he was really hungry. Now I’m giving him wet and dry food but he’s not touching the dry. My dad’s cat died today from chronic kidney failure and he refused to eat at all, so now I’m worried my cat’s disease might be getting worse but idk. Is this related to his kidney disease? Or maybe he’s just old and can’t chew properly? Or just likes this food more?! Should I be worried?

Trying to find specific toy

Hi! First time posting here, not sure where else to post.

I have a small dog, maverick, who LOVES to play fetch, but only with a specific ball. We bought this ball when we first got him, and he loved to bring it to us and then chase it as we threw it. But after two years of constant play, the ball fell apart, and I can’t find a replacement (same brand) anywhere. I’ve tried a few more balls but he doesn’t want to play with them... the “ball” we had looked very similar to this but with lighter colors (light blue, minty green and light orange) but he doesn’t like it as it is much heavier.

Originally we bought it at pet smart, but it’s no longer there and the only thing I can find similar is the one linked above. I know this is dramatic and I don’t mean for it to be... I’m sure he’ll get over it lol. But I figured I would ask in case anyone knows where I could find one. Thanks!

My dog's teeth (?) are chattering

My dog is approximately 17 years old (rescue dog), and as of today his teeth have been chattering more and more frequently, to the point where when he is just laying down it is near constant. It sounds and looks like his jaw is almost vibrating? When he is walking around it doesn't seem to happen. To start with I thought he was blowing raspberries but when it happens his mouth his closed and his head and neck seem to shake too.

He went to the vets a couple of days ago for a graze on his chin, and is now on steroids and antibiotics. I just wanted to know if this could be a symptom, and if I should be worried. Other than this he seems his normal self, possibly a bit more disorientated (but he is very old) but he is still alert, eating and drinking, and going to the toilet.

Thanks.

Advice needed - neighbor complaining about cat paw prints on car

We live in a townhouse community of 158 and have covered parking behind that is shared by 2 townhomes at a time (4 spaces). We recently acquired a cat that is let out for a few hours a day. Our neighbor (whom we’ve had several issues with) is complaining about paw prints on his car. We have a camera installed that has shown several cats in our area as well. When I offered to buy him a car cover, he rebutted saying that he shouldn’t have to use one. I don’t want to keep my cat inside at all times because he does sneak out when we’ve tried. There’s no HOA restrictions against cats either. Advice?

Dog Broken Leg

Hi everyone, Our dog broke his leg yesterday at the lower joint. We took him to emergency services where they charged us $950 for xrays and a splint (no meds).

They then quoted us an additional 5.5-6.5k for surgery. I’m really at a loss for words and can barely afford the $950 we were charged yesterday. They made us feel super guilty for not electing to keep him there over night and go to surgery this afternoon.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of injury and know if this is a reasonable price? Or even amputation? Chicagoland Area

Thanks so much in advance any guidance is helpful. I don’t know what to do

Cat meowing when I watch him in litter box?

Idk if this is normal but my 14 week old kitten meows if I’m in the same room as him when he’s using the litter box and sometimes keeps getting out and in the box, why is this?

I just saw something and I’m scared shitless

I don’t know if this is the right place to post something like this. I was walking down the street at 4:30 AM and I literally just saw a burnt cat as in smoldering. As in, on fire. I live in Bremerton, where a few years ago we had a guy lighting cats and animals on fire. Is it possible that maybe the cat got electrocuted by a power line or should I call the police and report this? A bit rattled and don’t know what to do.

Just a tip on kitty litter, seems like common knowledge, but I learned it through trial and error.

My kitty is named Cauliflower. He was abandoned. I found him with two siblings in a box while walking home, they were just kittens no more than a few weeks old.

I just concluded that emptying your litter box a few times a day rather than once a day (or longer.. pee-yew), will save you a proportionate amount of moolah per month on kitty litter. Litter can contain natural bentonite clay granules that clump together when liquid is absorbed, or sodium silicate sand that is processed with oxygen and water. These mixtures of compounds work extremely well at absorbing moisture. This means that the longer the soiled litter stays in the box the more litter will be used to absorb your kitties term deposits. So, by extension cleaning the box quickly after your cat makes a visit will reduce the amount of litter used. I went from buying an 18kg box of litter every few weeks to the same box every two months. I know it's not a huge savings, but I justify it by saying it makes my kitty happier. Certain brands of litter contain baking soda and other deodorizers and once saturated the clay needs to be changed or scooped at least every day to effectively control odor. So I would highly recommend you clean your box everyday, at least, for both you and you kitties happiness.

If you're like me and don't like dealing with the litter box, consider an Omega Paw Roll n' Clean litter box, they're basically the same price everywhere. I found a new one on Craigslist for 15$. But I've also read reviews that some cats don't like them. It's super easy to use and takes about 30 seconds to clean. But it all depends on your cat, there are tons of different types. Also keeping a soiled litter box around can cause negative health effects to both you and your pet, with things that sound like overexposure to ammonia, bacterial infection (aka cat scratch fever), and parasite transfer for you. Even worse, things like bladder inflammation, and kidney blockage and failure for your kitty.

I don't know about you, but I love my little guy and his happiness is contingent on what I'm willing to do for him. Considering someone left him for dead in an alley, I think he's doing pretty well.

Pregnant cat is very lovey and needy but refuses to be touched

We are fostering a pregnant cat due any day now. We have her in our bathroom because we don't want her hiding somewhere to give birth and we have other cats.

She will constantly meow when we aren't in there with her, she walks up to us meowing, blinks at us slowly, and eats and uses the litter with us in the room so she is pretty trusting of us. But every time we try to pet her she will run back to her tent and swipe at us if we get too close.

We have another cat we have brought into the room that she loves, she constantly headbutts him and will start purring and rolling around when we bring him in. When she is distracted by him we can touch her but she runs back to her tent as soon as we do.

Any way to get her used to us petting her? Concerned she may get even more protective of her space after giving birth and we won't have any access to her kittens if we need them for some reason.

Everything is posed against me owning a pet bird! What do I do?!

About 6-8 moths ago I took home an adorable homing pigeon (domesticated, no diseases, technically dove- pigeon is French for dove) from a very lovely breeder. I have allways loved pigeons, and have needed a pet my whole life, as I suffer from autism, and have trouble making friends. A pet was needed. Since having him (his name is mr pickles) my anxiety had taken a massive dive, and I have been so much happier now that I have a companion. About 2 months ago, I started getting easily puffed out and tight chested, ect ect. I have had asthma all my life, but this was way different. After about 2 months of blood tests, and endurance, the doctor has informed me it’s most likely an allergic reaction to my bird, and I will probably have to move him out of my room. I expected this when I first had symptoms, so I bought a HEPA filter, poured my bird a bath every day to reduce dander, and have committed to daylight my cleaning. The doctor says this likely isn’t enough, and moving him out of my room is the only option. The problem is, I don’t have a backyard to move him too, and I don’t have any spare rooms to have him live in. My landlord also won’t let me build any new rooms, or split any in two, or anything like that (which is understandable). I also can’t have him outside, as the vet has told me he will pick up diseases from other wild pigeons, and cats will be a major threat too. I can’t move my companion on, as not only would it break my heart (duh)- as my psychologist says, a disturbance like this could send me in a downward spiral back to where I was in the first place. It would be just like losing a real friend, I would be as depressed as ever. I also am allergic to cats, and so are my roommates, so that’s not an option too. I could get a dog, but losing the bond with my pigeon would be the worst thing. Many bird owners would be aware that a bond with a bird is much more trying, and rewarding at the same time. I can’t just get another pet basically. What. The. Frick. Do. I. Do?!!! Any advice is good advice, and it would mean so much to me ;-;

Coyotes in my suburban neighborhood.

First off, I apologize if this gets asked a lot. I did a search and couldn’t find my exact situation, so here I go.

It’s about 9:30 pm and I just got back from walking my 13 pound shih tzu mix.

I live in a suburb of Los Angeles and have seen a coyote here and there, but they have always run away.

Not this time. I spotted a coyote. It walked by, looked at us and kept going across the street.

We were just finishing our walk and saw the coyote turn around and head our way. It began chasing us all the way up the driveway, but we luckily got inside before it caught up.

I was terrified. There were multiple people out with their dogs tonight, but this guy must be pretty hungry to be hunting with so many people around...I’m guessing. I guess I figured one lone coyote wouldn’t hunt a “two person pack”.

I’m not sure what to do. There have been fires in the last couple years, so I can only imagine it’s displaced and food is scarce. I’m scared to go out at night now with my dog.

Is this something I call animal control about? I mean I don’t want any animals to be killed over this (coyote or house pets). It’s a scary situation.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

TL;DR: Coyote chased me and my small dog through our somewhat busy suburban neighborhood. Can I do anything?

Dog at night (help!)

I'm curious if anybody knows what to do in this situation.

My wife and I have a 10 year old Chihuahua that we adopted 5 years ago form a shelter. It has separation anxiety, and sleeps in bed because of this. The dog has always been attached to me (male) compared to my wife. In the past two weeks, our dog will stand on me during the night (my face, neck, upper body, etc.) to wake me up. The only way that I can get any sleep is if I go to our guest bedroom. She will follow me there and then allow me to sleep and I don't notice here.

Has anybody experienced anything like this and if so, how did you fix it?

Thanks!

My dog is sick and I’m terrified.

Hi Reddit.

My dog is sick right now and I’m terrified.

A few days ago I noticed his lymph nodes had gotten quite swollen. Since then it’s been a flurry of visits to the vet, x-rays, blood tests, aspirations, steroids and antibiotics. At this point we’re waiting until Monday for the aspirate test results to come in and let us know if it’s

A) Cancer B) Reactive lymph nodes C) We don’t know

All we know right now is that since Monday his appetite and energy levels have dropped and his liver and spleen are swollen.

I always knew this would be part of owning a dog. I just never thought it’d be so soon.

Bulldog aggression? Separation anxiety?

My boyfriend has two bulldogs. Maggie is 11 and Jethro just turned 4. My boyfriend has not been the greatest when it has come to training his dogs. Jethro seems to be very possessive of my boyfriend. He loves me but he also doesn’t like when we hug or kiss (unless he’s also in on the hugs and kisses). Jethro isn’t aggressive with me at all. He likes to rough house with my boyfriend.

The real problem is when my boyfriend leaves for work. Jethro loses it and tries to bite his hand and get aggressive as he is leaving for work. My boyfriend says this only happens when I’m in the house. Jethro doesn’t do it any other time.

Now my boyfriend also puts him in the crate before he goes to work. So when I’m there and my boyfriend is leaving for work, Jethro isn’t in the crate. He usually will try to bite at him as he’s walking from the kitchen to the door.

All of this is a little weird. Why is he like this when only I come over. My boyfriend has been putting him in the crate as he gets ready to leave. I let him out as soon as he leaves since I’m there for another 30 minutes before I go to work. The second I let him out of the crate, he jumps toward the door to see if daddy is still there. Thoughts? Ideas?
