Should I get a dog?

I been considering getting a dog recently, but there are a few concerns I have. I’m hoping some other dog owners can help me decide if this is the right decision. A few thing a about me, I grew up with pets (dogs and cats) so I am aware of the responsibility that comes with having a pet. I do have a cat that I’ve taken care of for about 5 years, and I live in a house with three roommates who also have pets (a dog and cat). I think this is a good environment for a dog because there is plenty of space and we have a yard. Everyone I live with loves animals and can be trusted to take care of my pets when I’m not around.

Now to the things that are making me reconsider.

  1. The environment I live in is pet friendly now but I can’t guarantee that will stay the same. Idk if my current roommates will want to continue living in the house we currently have and i could be forced to try and find an apartment. Most of the places that rent in my town either do not allow pets or have weight/breed restrictions. I also don’t know if an apartment would be good for a larger dog anyway.

  2. I’m worried my cat will feel that he isn’t getting enough attention if I have another pet. My cat mostly keeps to himself. He rarely sits on my lap, normally he will sit a few inches away or just look for a spot that is raised up and isolated. He’s is still very affectionate at times and I feel like he understands that even though there are other animals in the house, he is my only pet and the other animals belong other people.

  3. I want a big dog. I’ve never really had a specific breed I like, I just like big dogs. This means I need to make sure this dog is trained properly. Right now a good friend of my has some German Shepard pups and I’m considering taking it in. If I actually put time into every day is this a dog that can be trained easily. Obviously German Shepard’s are notorious for operating in K-9 units but I’m assuming they are good at what they do not because they are easy to train but because they have a good trainer.

TLDR Considering getting a dog, concerned about training, how it will affect my other pets, and what happens if o have to move.
