Petsmarts Banfield vet question

Has anyone ever had their cat fixed at Petsmarts Banfield vet? Was it costly or Inexpensive? I see mixed opinions and was wondering if anyone here has experience. Thanks!

Neighbor Cat Problem

So I'm from a small town in eastern Minnesota and this summer we got new neighbors, a young couple who are both pharmacists. Well they bought a house with lots of land and some farm buildings, including a barn. I know that my previous neighbors took all their pets with them, so the problem does not stem from them. So last weekend a cat wandered up to my house, she's the most adorable cat I've ever seen (rivaling even my three kittens) and is a lovey cuddle-er type of cat. My mom went up and down the road and asked people if they had a missing cat, turns out the cat is the new neighbors barn cat. Its no problem that the cat wandered up to the house, but it is a problem because this cat does not at all like being outside and would much rather prefer being inside and is also quite young. The neighbors took her back, but she has popped back at my house and has not left in several days. My worry is that she isn't being treated well or is being neglected, taking the fact that she has seemed to attach to us. Since Minnesota gets cold early I'm worried about what will happen to her, since we can't take her in since we have two dogs and three cats already. Should I call a (no-kill) shelter/humane society, try to find a foster family for her, or talk to the neighbors and try to figure out a plan to fix the situation?

Adopting a kitten regret? Major Anxiety.

My daughter and I live with my parents.and brother. She is an only child and seemed like she needed a companion..so I thought i would adopt a kitten. Waited for months..but I started to do research after I decided on one and it started giving me anxiety. But I thought...this is for my daughter so I have to just suck it up. It will go away. Regardless I went through with it and once we got her...i felt even more intense anxiety. (This was 3 days ago).

I didnt want her in our room at night so to not disturb my daughter...so she was meowing all night until my brother took her in. She is extremely cuddly and playful...what is weird is that I feel as though I have postpartum except with a cat! She tries to cuddle with me and I have no interest...it gives me major anxiety ...I see her cuddling with my brother and it makes me feel the same. I literally feel like I want to either be in my room alone or leave the house. Its making me very uncomfortable and I have NO IDEA why.

I've always had hamsters and had intense bonds with them...it killed me when they would pass...never had a cat. I am generally an animal lover which is why I'm so shocked by my reaction. I dont think I expected for the kitten to be so affectionate so soon. I didn't think it would love us and be so comfortable so soon. I'm not at her level yet...I'm not there yet...but she is and I dont know how to handle it.

I take good care of her...and make sure she is fed and comfortable. But thinking about another 10 or even 20 years gives me so much anxiety:( I have NO IDEA what's wrong with me...I'm generally not good with change...I know that...I'm just hoping thats it and nothing more.

Please no judgement :( I'm really struggling.

Looking for a community to ask about toxicity of certain plants...?

I have a baby ginkgo tree and I would like to have it inside my house in the winter months, my fear is that my cat will have a demon fit and attack/ingest some of it. Fears aside, if that does happen, I was hoping to find a solid answer/source for whether or not ginkgo is safe for dogs and cats to ingest.

Any help is great help,

Cheers!

normal? Kitten annoying our senior cat

Our resident 12 year old male recently acquired a new sister, a 3 month old female. We did the slow introduction through scent and visual etc... And they're at supervised sessions right now (it's been 2 weeks). My male cat doesn't give a crap 🤣 no agression, he's huge compared to her. He usually just looks at her and walks away. But the kitty has been following him around trying to sniff his tail, and occasionally hisses at him from behind. My older cat just walked away until he eventually goes outside (where she can't go) Is this normal behavior for the first few weeks? I'm assuming she's just trying to figure out her place in the household. He doesn't see her as a threat obviously, he doesn't show any agressive signs when she's hissing at him. She's been hissing less than she was a few days ago. Anyone else experience this?

Dog growling at parents dogs?

My dog loves meeting other dogs at the park and doesn't show any signs of aggressive behaviors around them.

I decided to visit my parents this weekend and they have three dogs. Only one of the dogs showed a little aggression, but the other two were friendly. As the day has progressed, my dog has began growling at all three dogs. She doesn't seem scared so I'm not sure what's going on....

Key notes: my dog is currently in her heat cycle. She's 1 year old and a pug/beagle/shar-pei mix.

How do I get my cockatiel to eat some fruit and vegetables?

My cockatiel, Richie, loooooves eating seeds. Like the point where he's screaming of excitement everytime I feed him

The only issue is, he doesn't like eating anything except for cockatiel feed seeds, but it's important for their health to feed cockatiels fruit and vegetables every now and then

When we leave fruit and vegetables in his food, he eats around it and refuses to eat it

How do I get him to eat fruits and vegetables?

My dog is the worst when it comes to playing with other dogs.

Take him to the dog park, he chases around 1 dog the entire time and he tries to hump it.

Today I took him on his walk and he peed on another dog’s face.

I need help managing 4 dogs!

Greetings,

I have four dachshunds. Dogs wise: the mother, father, and their two girls. The rest we're given to friends etc. House wise: I live with my father and his girlfriend. The dogs are technically the girl friends, but we all love them. We've had them for over a decade or so. So we all work different schedules so we have decided to use a PeePee pad for when we aren't around to let them out. But the PeePee pad has been a nightmare in my life for several years now. I wanted to ask if anyone had any suggestions because I'm at my wits end?

https://i.redd.it/rjs5zd4zbwj31.jpg

We take all of our dogs out into the our gated yard frequently. Maybe every two or three hours or when someone gets home. We've noticed the dogs get overly excited when we get home and sometimes they pee on the floor. But the dogs are super sneaky about it and show signs they messed up. For instance, we have only caught one dog doing this once in the past few months. Yet, all of our dogs seem "potty trained" when we are around. They know where they're supposed to go to the restroom and attempt to use the pee pad or in the grass. But sometimes they leave their butts off the pad and the pee is destroying our floor. The pee is under the floor. When you step on a tile, the urine squirts out and gets on our socks.... So gross.... Not to say we don't have intermittent issues with them peeing on rugs or on the floor though. It seems to happen more at night. I've tried leaving a light on just for the pad and that hasn't helped.

I'm really at a loss. We go through mop heads, paper towels, and pads like water. Our house smells of urine. There is no other spot in the house for the pee pad and not a lot of space to add a raised pad they would have to step up onto. The flooring is only 2 years old. But we are currently planning on redoing it with a water proof solutions. Please if you have an suggestions I would greatly appreciate them!?

Help, brought home a 5 week old kitten

I was going about my Saturday normally, when a few hours ago my mother gets home with a tiny baby Siamese, less than 1 pound and 5 weeks old. She apparently bought him from a breeder (I think) who also had his brother there. His mother, according to breeder, is out of milk. Mother plans on taking kitten to vet soon.

While I love cats, I'm just a bit worried. I'm 15, and I'll have to go back to high school on Thursday, from 8 - 4 ish. We also do not have another cat/kitten. Will this kitten learn how to cat?

I know how he should be fed right now and stuff like that. I'm also aware of time periods for vaccines/neutering. But what else should I be aware of?

Any advice as to what to do right now would help. I really want the kitten to have a good kittenhood that paves the way for a good adulthood.

Struvite crystals and Royal Canin Urinary So

Before I start I would liked to apologize if I sound like a crazy person. I love my cat dearly and I want to make sure I am doing the absolute best for her.

My Persian cat had struvite crystals at age 2. She was on a raw diet (nature’s variety). We tried hills and royal canin canned version which she would not eat so after one year we switched her back to raw commercial food. A year later she had blood in her urine again and this time I tried the dry urinary so and she loved it. She is now 5 and we never had a reoccurrence because she is still on the dry urinary so. I’m thinking of switching to canned food because the ingredients don’t seem too nutritious. I spoke with the vet and he said I can try a different food and switch back over to urinary so when another episode comes along-now that we know it works. The first time she had crystals she went to the vet then my friend brought over her kitten which may have stressed her out. The second time my parents left for vacation and I think that may have stressed her out. Her father apparently had struvite crystals at 8 years old and it was a result of the owner giving him alkaline water, according to the owner. Not sure if genetics or environment is at play.

I have three questions:

  1. Are there any cat owners who have fed their cats urinary so and had their cats live long lives? I’m talking 16+ years old.

  2. Is two years too young to have crystals?

  3. Do you think genetics or stress is more likely the cause?

cuddle buddy ideas

Hello,

I am legally blind and living with a neurological disorder now. I am in the process of getting a guide dog but it may take a long time I am in Canada. I am trying my best but some days I get very overwhelmed and just want a buddy to cuddle with. I have a cockatiel but she is very human and loves me conditionally lol. I love her so much but I do not expect her to be my emotional support animal because she is a very independent girl.

I have come to the conclusion that I think an emotional support animal would help me greatly. I am very afraid of rats and not comfy having cats because of my little bird but I am cool with any other animal.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is it true that people can grow allergy immunities to pets?

I've had a 'hypoallergenic' cat for almost a year. I've had allergies for most of my life, but have reacted to her a lot lot less, and I find I can be around/pet regular cats now with little to no reaction. So my question is is it true that people can develop a tolerance after living with a pet for a while? Is it possible I could adopt another, non-hypoallergenic cat or does the hypoallergenic trait make a pretty significant difference? I still have some symptoms if I stop taking allergy meds, but I haven't had a bad reaction in a while now. I do find I wheeze myself awake more often than I used to but that's about the worst of it

He is starting to cry in the middle of the night because he wants to go out and its driving me nuts. He used to act this way when we had another dog a couple years ago when she was in heat but we dont have her anymore and she was taken to a different owner. Does anyone know what it could be?

4 yo Japanese chin has been throwing up

This has all happened today, and I don’t know if it’s a cause for concern. My 4 year old Japanese Chin has thrown up 3 times today (12 pm as i’m typing this, started at around 7-8) and I don’t know if there’s something wrong or not. She hasn’t been throwing up anything like food, and it seems to be mostly liquid. She seems fine at the moment (calm and so forth).

Could it just be a mix of her eating/drinking and running around? She’s been awfully playful today and has been really active.

Can cutting a dog's whiskers affect the ability of him playing?

My dog needed his nails clipped, a rant.

My dog has very sharp nails. He needs them cut every 2 months.

We got his nails clipped about 4 months ago, after WEEKS of begging my dad to get them done. They said his nerves were growing out, and to take him back in 3 weeks. Well, he didn't! In fact, it's been 5 MONTHS. I told my mom and she immediately took him. His nails grew out so much, that they were hurting him, and his nerves were at the top of his nails, so they hurt really bad to trim.

My dad blatantly ignored my dogs health, and now my dogs in pain.

My blood is boiling, and I can't wait to give my dad an ear full

Our family has a poop problem with this dog

We don't know why but for the past 3 days he has been pooping sometime between 12:00 am and 6:00 am. He has never done this before, and my dad is thinking about returning him back to the humane society, because he always poops on the carpet, so every morning we have to pick it up with a poop bag and scrape whatever was left with a shirt we no longer use, and we're running out of those. We live in an apartment so that means he can't go outside and poop because we also live on a third floor. We need help because we don't want to send him back

Trouble finding gate for wide opening ( ~10 foot)

I guess I might be going for something a bit too large. The distance between is 110 inches, but maybe I am being too particular in this situation.

I was looking at retractable mesh gates. We live in a relatively modest sized house where storing or moving a gate would be difficult. Online, I could only find those particular gates fitting a threshold of 6 feet. I assume there must be limitations or the need for larger sizes is not common.

I have thought of purchasing two 55 inch gates (I need 110'') and using an s-hook to join them together.

Maybe I am being too impractical on this, but I wonder if anyone has been in this situation before, have DIY or out of the box suggestions.

At my breaking point with my roommates cat & feeling like a terrible owner with mine.. Please, advice and help is needed :(

My roommates cat (Salem) is just over a year old. He is Siamese and fixed. We moved in together about three months ago, and I made the mistake of not bringing my cat (Lady, who is also Siamese/female) into our home till we were already living here for about a month and a half together... Lady was still living at my sisters place (where I lived before) and she loved it there, so I was in no rush to bring her to my new place straight away.

Salem is a bad cat, period. Or maybe hes just a kitten, idk, but he constantly meows, scratches furniture, knocks things over, and is going crazy almost 24/7. And this was before I brought Lady here as well.

When Lady came home, I read some tutorials online about how to introduce them so I did exactly that. Keep in mind, Lady is 10 years old so she is not a kitten, and 1000x more chill then Salem. They kinda sniffed eachother at first and Lady hissed a little bit because Salem was really curious and wouldnt stop following her around, etc. They even got into a few cat fights but those were quickly broken apart.

Anyways, long story short, I am at my breaking point here and I dont know what to do. I still have Lady's food and water dish kept in my bedroom and Salem's are in the kitchen, so those are separated. He still continues to come into my bedroom and eat Lady's, even when his bowls are filled. Their litter boxes are both in the laundry room, but those have to be kept together because there is really nowhere else I could store them (they have separate litter boxes as well, and they both use their own).

I am not locking Lady in my bedroom all day because I work alot, but everytime I come home she is ALWAYS underneath my bed hiding, and Salem is in the living room greeting me at the door as soon as I get in. Salem doesnt let Lady explore outside my bedroom at all (unless I'm home supervising them) and he just chases her right back into my room if she steps two feet out. He doesn't always attack her, but he will jump on her back and kinda like love bite her around the neck. Love bite, idk? She hates it though :(

It breaks my heart because Lady can barely walk around and majority of the time, shes under my bed. I know I'm not home 24/7 because like I said, I work alot, so I dont know exactly how it is when I'm not here... But I got a good idea that if he doesnt leave her alone majority of the time I DO see what's going on, then he probably doesnt let her come out much.

My roommate also sleeps with her door closed because she cant get a good sleep with it open because Salem is usually doing some dumb shit keeping her up. I sleep with mine closed and I have been bringing Lady in my room at night and whenever I open the door to go to the washroom or let Lady over to the litterbox, THERE he is - sitting & waiting.

What does this sound like? What do I do? Where do I start? :( I need help/advice. Im at my breaking point... I feel like such a terrible owner because I feel like my cat is miserable. I still have my other male cat at my sisters but I'm debating on bringing him here now even because he is the same age as Lady and I dont want him to get terrorized as well. Do you think if I bring him here with Lady then maybe Salem would lay off a little bit?

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!

What do I do with my cats while builders are going to be in my home and I’m on holiday?

I have two 7 year old cats and my bathroom is due to be renovated and because I’m renting I really had little say over the time of it.

My boyfriend and I going away to a caravan park (I live in the UK) with family travelling to come join us so we can’t reschedule said holiday. The park is only about an hour from my house so our original plan was to stay there a night, come back a night and so on to feed and sort the cats out with food and change their litter etc.

With the builder being there, however, I’m not sure what to do because they would be locked up in one room with everything they need (the room they spend most time in) but I don’t know how they would be with all of the noise going on and is not being there to comfort them.

My brother has offered to take the cats to his house for the 5 days, however he has a dog and cat of his own and my 2 don’t really get on well with other animals. Again, they would be locked in a room up there too, kept separate from my brothers pets, but the difference being there would be no construction work noise and they would have a familiar face attending them all day whenever they need it. There is no doubt they would be panicky and nervous there at all times of the day.

So should I leave my cats at home and in a familiar environment, where a face pops in once a day to feed them and spend a little bit of time with them but they have the noisy construction work, or should I take them to my brothers where they will be scared from the smell of his pets and being in a different environment but will have constant supervision?

Having a hard time coming to terms my pet needs to be put down

A week ago I found out my cat has a pretty big mass on her lung. Her kidneys are failing too. She’s 15. So my deal is she’s been hanging around being her normal self up until this last week. She is having a wobbly time walking and eats only soft foods. Peeing still, but hasn’t pooped. But what is messing me up is how alert she is. The vet was ready to put her down when we visited but I was not. They said she had 1-2 days left and she’s still alert one week later. So every day I’m like does she need to be put down today? But she is still breathing ok and responding to me !!!! I feel so many places of guilt. I feel like an anti-vacciner

Cat has bad separation anxiety

Im in college, and we're allowed to have an emotional support animal, so I filled out all the necessary paperwork and brought my cat. Thing is, he's developed some crazy levels of separation anxiety. He's always been very shy, but this is new. He won't leave my room at all (I share a common space with roommates, we each have our own bedrooms), and if I leave my room, even to go to the bathroom, he cries. I tried bringing him to the bathroom while I got ready for bed, but he sprinted out and back into my room, and began crying again.

He has never been a very vocal cat, but this is getting to him. Is there anything I can do to help him with the transition? I can't have him yelling constantly every time I'm in class.

When I'm in the room, he glues himself to me. He's always been a lapcat, but also independent at other times. Currently, he tries to lay on me practically every few minutes, and is much more reluctant to move if I have to get up. That's not a problem in and of itself, but it's another symptom.

I don't really want to send him home. My parents have too many cats (five others), and that amount was really putting stress on him. He would get attacked by an older bigger cat often, and out of fear would pee or poop on the floor. This asshole of a cat does things like bar others from the litter box too, and all this ultimately resulted in my cat developing a blockage that required hospitalization. Point is, he's better off here without so many other animals. I just don't know how to keep him calm when I'm not right next to him.

My cousin’s (22f/CA, USA) current dream is to have a photoshoot with a crow. I want to make this a reality for her.

Now, I have a few obvious ground rules regarding this: 1) No wild birds can be involved. It’s not right. Leave them be.

2) No domesticated birds that are handled by someone without a license or certification should be involved. i.e. no illegally domesticated crows

So, that all said, anyone have any pointers or ideas as to how I can help make this happen?

Do people legally have crows as pets? I’m fairly certain (but open to correction) that they would have to have a license and/or work at a wildlife rehab center in order to have this sort of access...

Is this even morally or ethically sound to exploit an animal in this way? If it were domesticated, would it be much different from doing a photoshoot with one’s parakeet?

Photoshop would probably be the easiest, but a) I suck at photoshop and b) she really wants to meet a real one.

Does anyone have a parrot that looks remarkably like a crow?

This is a serious post, and I realize it’s ridiculous, but I’m having a huge brain fart regarding how to go about this.

Our puppy ate onion leaves. What do I do?

Our two-month old Japanese spitz puppy has ingested onion leaves while we were all out of the house. I found the leaves scattered on the floor when I got home. I don't know how much he ate or if he even ate at all, but a family member left a roll of onion leaves on the coffee table and our puppy somehow managed to get it.

I'm so scared because onions are toxic for dogs and he's not eating his lunch. I hope he's okay though. I will observe him for symptoms but I'm looking for precautionary measures. I hope someone can help me. Thank you :)

(Extra Info: We live in the Philippines so the vet is really far from our home and expensive so I will take him to the vet when absolutely necesary. My family dismisses it as something I shouldn't be worried about because they don't believe that onions are toxic for dogs so I can't really rely on them to support me on this.)

My mom put my cat outside in a new house/new location and he hasn’t returned in about 8 hours. How do I get him to return if he may be lost?

He normally stays inside and out but he always stayed around the house. But he doesn’t know what the house is now since we moved. It’s a small subdivision with most houses probably fenced in.

Does putting out the litter box help even if it’s about a week old and he barely used it. Put food out? Thanks.

Can’t deal with my step-dads dog anymore

I figure this is the right subreddit to post this.

Hi fellow redditors, two years ago my mom bought my stepdad what is to be a purebred Rottweiler at 6 weeks old.

No training whatsoever because my step dad “trains” his dogs himself by hitting them and pinning them to the ground, whatever.

At about 4-5 months he bit my face out of aggression and almost took my eye out, which was the first time he had acted out. Since that mark in his life he has been constant with bad behavior and my step-dad constantly advocates for the dog. When he bit my face it was “he’s just a puppy” when he jumps up on people and snaps at them it’s “he’s trying to play” etc etc.

It’s getting to the point now where nobody can walk out of their rooms without him jumping, or smacking them with his paws. Or nipping at them. We can’t walk up the stairs when we get home because he sits at the top and will jump at us if we try to get by him. I can’t have friends or my boyfriend over because he snaps at them, and basically anyone else we invite in the house.

My step dad doesn’t see this and sees this dog as a perfect, amazing, never does bad dog. Where my mom, me, my sister and others are being scratched, bruised and lunged at by this dog.

What can I do? What can my mom do? We don’t wanna get rid of the dog but my step dad refuses to let us go take the dog to get trained. Help!?

Hand raising a budgie, how old should I get mine?

My dad has an Avery, and was gonna give me one of his baby birds for hand raising, just wondering how old it should be before we take it? some people say it doesn't matter, but some say when it's only just getting it feathers. I thought I'd check first just in case.

Cat Adoption Regret, Would Like Advice

Hello. I am sorry to have to seek advice about this but I have no idea where else to go.

I recently moved out of my mom's house for college. There, we always had pets to snuggle and love. This past Sunday I decided that I wanted to take on a cat since living without an animal felt odd. I researched, looked online, moved
around money and yesterday, after a few days of wanting a cat, I adopted a cat from Petsmart.

For whatever reason when I got home and placed her down in my room my heart sank and I felt a deep anxiety about what I just did. She is adorable, soft, sweet, well behaved, and all around a perfect cat. I think the problem is me. I am unsure if I can actually take care of her.

I got the worst sleep last night because of her jumping on me and laying on my face. I gently removed her every time, I would never hurt an animal. I always feel like she's getting into something as well. It's exhausting and I feel like I can't relax in my own room. I have a very expensive PC that I worry one day I'm gonna come home and she'd have destroyed the power supply cable. She does like to put her mouth around cables. I have been very good about keeping her box clean but it is exhausting after I come home from classes or work to have to stick my face in a stinky box and scoop shit out. She is so affectionate and always wants to be on top of me or near me. I hate myself for saying this but I get annoyed by this and just want space sometimes. I have to keep her entirely in my own room since I live in a townhome with 3 other people. There's two other cats here too and one absolutely hates my cat so I feel like I can't let my cat out ever if I need some space. I work at a retail job part time for some spending money. Sometimes I don't even have the cash to get groceries for myself. My dad, the one who finances my college and rent, doesn't even know I have a cat because of how impulsively I did this. I know though that if any vet bills came up my parents would help me. I feel so stupid and guilty for asking though.

I feel like I acted impulsively and foolishly in adopting a cat. Back at home, I had a family to help take care of animals. Here I realized she is solely my responsibility. I also never really had a cat before. I had cats at my dad's house but I never had to take care of them, only saw them maybe once a week, and they were older. She is about 1 year old which I thought would be old enough to be manageable but she still acts very kittenlike.

I know the obvious answer here is to give it more time. But I have this feeling in my gut that every second I don't take action is just hurting me and the cat more. My mom has said she would take the cat from me, but we have rabbits at home and I don't want them in danger. I feel ashamed at what I did and I just feel like I want this cat out of my life asap.

My dog passed away last night at a young age.

I have a 6 year old golden doodle who recently started acting *weird i’m not sure what other word to use but last night he just didn’t look right. we took him in for a vet early in the morning and everything seemed fine. but that night he didn’t look so good, so we took him to an animal hospital around 10:30 pm. we get a call back saying that he was internally bleeding and needed emergency surgery because they thought it was cancer, around 2 in the morning we get a call saying that he didn’t make it through surgery and had cancer all through is body. We went to visit him after surgery one last time around 2 in the morning. I haven’t slept at all and i’m on my way to school right now, what are good ways i can get this off my head because it’s all i can think of right now.

Old roomie abandoned cat at my place, help?

Okay so there is a complicated history with this cat. My roomy got her when she was a kitten and I effectively raised and took care of her. Time goes on and he leaves the cat at my place. At first it was okay, as he provided food for her and etc. Now it's been over two months, I've effectively had to move her to outside because she has fleas now and I'm taking it upon myself to provide for her still. It's at the point where he needs to come get her(like wayyy past due shes abandoned at this point) or I take her to a shelter. Heres the problem gang, I LOVE this cat. I raised her, she is so excited to see me everyday and play. I really want to get her treated and bring her inside to live with me but I'm not doing it for this asshole to just come scoop her up when he finally feels like it. I really should drop her at the shelter but shes not a bad cat and I would loose part of my soul if I did that to her. It's not her fault her owner is a piece of shit. Please, tell me what I can do. I care about her, but I cant continue to provide for "not my cat".

Obese cat

I have a 5 year old male cat. He weighs around 8,5 kg (18,5 lbs). I realise it's way too much, so I want to help him lose weight. The cat eats dry food (Purizon Adult Sterilised) and wet food (Animonda Carny), they are I think good brands, not filled with grains and fruits. I give him less food than for his weight. He is an indoor cat and he will play with toys for 5 minutes until he loses interest. I bought him a ball that he has to roll to get food from inside but he doesn't understand how to use it. He has been castrated around 2 years ago and I have him for 8 months.

What else can I do to try to help him lose weight? I'm out of ideas.

Cat refuses to eat anything other than Whiskas

Hey everyone, I don't know how big of an issue this actually is, but it has left me very confused in our search for a solution.

The title pretty much sums it up, my family's cat refuses to eat any sort of cat food other than that of this one specific brand. This usually wouldn't be a problem and hey, at least there's something we can be sure she'll actually eat, but I've heard mostly negative things about the brand - mostly that their products include sugar as well as grain. Pet store employees as well have told us about this and encouraged us to try different things.

Honestly though, at this point I don't even remember how many different kinds of food we've tried, she never eats it. If it's something with sauce, she'll lick off the sauce and leave the actual meat, otherwise she'll go straight to the dry food or won't eat until you give her something else.

Right now we're trying to mix a little bit of other food into the Whiskas stuff everytime and it works somewhat okay, but she definitely notices and is not too happy about it either.

Hell, I have no clue what they put in their products. I don't know how common this is, but does anyone have idea on what's going on here/what we can do/if we should even do anything or just accept her specific taste?

tips for cats to adapt in their new home and getting along with the others.

hey reddit. i need some help with getting my cats to get along! so my mom & i are recently moving in to my stepdads house and he has 3 cats of his own & i have one female cat named coco. today was the day we introduce her to the house, and she of course found a place to hide haha (she’s been there for hours.) one of the oldest cat (zoe aka mama cat) is surprisingly nice and patient with coco, same with the other two. my cat is the ONLY one who’s growling and hissing at them but they don’t do it back which is good? the 3 are pretty friendly lmao. im now trying to separate them to give the space and coco to be more comfortable but i guess im just worried she might not adapt to her new home or maybe not get along with the cats.. any advice or tips?😩

Fostering was a mistake?

Okay, so some background. I'm 26 and last year my cat of 23 died. Her and I were completely bonded and it wrecked me.

However, I had been considering adopting a cat for a couple months and I decided to visit the shelter. I ultimately decided that this cat wasn't good for me long term (she wanted to be the only cat and I don't know what my housing situation will be come June and dont wanna stress her out more than necessary). However, I wasn't really getting along as nicely with the other cats and they brought up fostering her since they wanted to know how she would do at an apartment (she was originally from a cat colony). Enthusiastically, I said yes.

Then we get home. And she is a great cat. She is walking around like she owns the place within two hours. But I'm a wreck. I have been sitting here awake all night out of guilt because I realized I wasn't as ready as I thought I am. I have been sitting here crying over this wonderful cat and how seeing her around my stuff just breaks my heart even more. I know she's not my previous cat and never will be and that's not the issue. It's just apparently I hadn't gotten over my loss as well as i thought.

So the questions are: do I return her? They had space and were looking for a foster just for behavioral information and have the room for her, so that's not an issue. Alternatively, how can I try to make this the most loving place she can be until she gets an adopter? I dont have any issues interacting with her aside from that she likes to get in my claustrophobic-zone at night but I just set her down and say no. I just dont want it to end up being a miserable situation for the both of us.

Advice about bad pet shops

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone could possibly offer some advice about handling bad pet shops.

I visited the city yesterday and went into 2 pet shops, both of which had terrible housing for their birds. One of the shops had birds (not for sale) on display attached to the roof of the shop in extremely small cages (only 1 stick and no toys). The birds for sale were in slightly larger cages, however there was quite a few birds in the small cages.

I don't want to damage the owners business, but what can I do to encourage better housing?

Thanks to everyone to replies.

Injured feral cat

I have a feral cat in my yard who is fixed and it looks like hes gotten attacked pretty badly by a coyote or some other kind of animal. It looks like its very uncomfortable walking, has its tail knicked up, and also has a paw that looks scraped. I found it as the sun was setting and it hissed at me for the first time. (usually its not that frazzled and will let me get within 6 feet when it does visit) its currently hiding in my garage under some boxes and im afraid of accidentally hurting him further by moving him, im also afraid that if i dont catch him on the first try he will run into the woods injured. Should i try to catch him myself or should i call someone specifically?

I'm considering adopting a second cat but am worried about the risks to my current cat

Fleas, tapeworms, ringworm, etc., would be a huge hassle but could be managed.

I'm more worried about what happens if the new cat tests positive for FeLV or FIV, or perhaps worse - undiagnosed FIP.

There's the risk to my first cat to consider. It would break my heart if by trying to get her a friend I made her ill.

Then there's the future of the second cat to consider. What would I do with it? Dropping it off at a shelter seems heartless after adopting it but I couldn't keep both if doing so might kill my first cat.

Other people who have debated these scenarios, would you please let me know your thoughts? Thanks. ❤

My pup has developed a sudden leg kick when scratched.

Hi All,My pup is getting old. It sucks, but it is what it is so I am trying to come to terms with making his last couple years the best they can be.

He recently developed a weird leg kick scratch response when he gets pet between his shoulder blades. A big grin (or grimace?) comes across his face and his leg goes nuts. I can't find anything there that warrants this response.

Any suggestions or ideas would be most appreciated. He is an amazing pup and I only want to scratch that spot if he is loving it.

Dwarf Frog stuck in shed?

One of my African Dwarf frogs shed is stuck to it's skin. The tank was foggy because the filter wasn't working, so i cleaned the tank out and replaced the water. I just discovered today that was the problem so i now have to manually clean it, but the frog hasn't gotten rid of the excess skin and it's been several hours. My cats back legs stopped working all the sudden

For context my cat is a healthy year old who is very lively. All the sudden his hind legs stopped working. He'd fall over to his side, he shortly freaked out and pulled himself through the house with his front legs. We put him in the crate as to not injure himself. We watched over him trying to find a vet open so late and failing since we live in a small town. And about an hour later he was wobbly on his hind legs but relatively fine. I watched him closely all night and in the morning he seemed fine?

This has totally baffled me and I'm just wondering if there is an explanation? He's totally fine now it seems.

Puppy starts biting out of the blue while walking him

Hi guys,

My soon 4 months old puppy suddenly becomes aggressive a few times a day while walking him.

He acts totally normal and suddenly jumps up on me, biting and growling and going completely nuts. It always happens out of the blue and rn happens every day. (Some weeks ago it just happened about once or twice a week)

When he starts acting like that I put the rope in his mouth and he bites into it instead of me, then I just go home as quickly as I can, completely ignoring him. Most of the time the behavior immediately stops when we arrive inside our house.

Idk what that kind of behavior means and how to prevent it. Some days ago I drove with him to a lake so he can try swimming for the first time. Just after a few minutes he became totally aggressive again and after cooling down it happened again, so I left after 10 minutes with him. Back in the car he was totally tired, behaved well and fell asleep..

Is it possible that he does that when he is overwhelmed or tired? But what can I do to teach him another way of showing that?

I would really appreciate your help understanding what I'm doing wrong and what his behavior means!

Cat sick after Metacam

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on this. Earlier this year my cat was diagnosed with arthritis and prescribed metacam to help with the pain.

After a couple weeks on it I noticed she wasn’t eating as much and was starting to vomit so I stopped immediately and booked an appointment with a vet who suggested it was likely just upsetting her stomach and that she likely still wasn’t eating because she now associated her food with being sick.

We switched her diet up but still she didn’t get better so I took her back. The vet this time requisitioned a urine test, followed by a blood test and it came back that she had kidney disease.

She was hospitalized the vets (it was supposed to be for 2 days but it ended up being closer to a week) before I got to take her home. Her vital signs were finally good and stable but she still wasn’t eating.

She’s now been home for close to two weeks, she still isn’t eating. She seems to have some good days (seems like her normal self only she won’t eat) and she has some bad days (curled up in pain).

I have been syringe feeding her, she was on potassium Gluconate, aminos, buprenorphine, antibiotics, and more recently went on an appetite stimulant.

She has a follow up appointment next week but it’s been hard watching her suffer like this. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get her to eat?

As well, I can’t seem to find any information on this but when cats get kidney issues from metacam how likely is it that they recover?

I love her so much but she mostly seems miserable these days and if she’s not going to get better I’d rather not keep putting her through this. Thanks everyone!

Need help giving a dog prednisone

Hello everyone! I recently adopted a little 6 year old chiweenie who is heartworm positive. We did his round of doxy and yesterday he had his first shot in the series of the heartworm treatment. He’s home today and just isn’t feeling good. He needs to take a prednisone but I can’t get him to eat anything. I tried his kibbles I tried rice with chicken broth and I tried peanut butter and he just keeps running away from me to hide. I know the prednisone will upset his stomach more then it already is of he doesn’t eat. Should I just cram it down his throat and hope he doesn’t throw it up? He’s currently still owned by the shelter because they’re covering the cost of the treatment so I didn’t get to see or talk to the vet when I picked him up today and they didn’t tell me what to expect.

Is the way our rabbits live alright?

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place to post, feel free to remove my post if it isnt.

Recently I have been thinking a lot about whether our rabbits (three, appoximately 7 to 8 years old, we got them from a farm when me and my sisters were younger) are "happy" living with us or would be better of if they were to be relocated.

To clarify, they are not being neglected or starved or something. They get fresh food everyday (Carrots etc) have their own water bowl which is also refreshed daily and have a rather big "cage" (indoors, approximately 5×5m, 2 m high) as well as three "rabbit toilets" (cleaned every one to two days), a place for dried grass and multiple wooden houses and blankets. They have each other as company, sometimes I go visit them and my sister is the one that cleans their living space.

So what I am asking is if they are "happy" or need more company. Whenever I go to see them they venture to me but are not particularely fond of being touched unless you persuaed them with treats, so I dont really believe that they enjoy or "need" my company. We do have a garden, but there is no grass, and there are some things, as well as cats, which might be dangerous for them to encounter or eat.

I know that it is not ideal that they are always indoors, so I would greatly appriciate it if an experienced rabbit owner could tell me if their living situation is alright or if they should be relocated to a place where they get more attention and the opportunity to be outdoors.

Thanks in advance, please be civil.

Looking to hear others experiences with relinquishing their pet

This has been killing me. We’ve had our cat for about 1.5, almost 2 years now. He’s nearly 3. For the majority of that time, we have been absolutely struggling with him. He was a stray and has severe food aggression and just plain aggression always. He has gashed up our legs and arms unprovoked more times than I can count. We’ve been working with our vet to try and change his behavior but it’s been going no where. I love my cat, but my anxiety has been through the roof since we got him. I’m going to the vet again next week to see what our options are in terms of other treatments but if there is nothing left, I don’t know how I can keep him. I’m miserable and I feel he is too and nothing I do is making it any better. I’ve been a mess about this. I’m just hoping to hear others opinions and experiences in a non judgmental manner if possible. I just want to know that others, both owners and the pets, have come out better as a result of relinquishing their pets for whatever reason.

Candles or sprays safe for cats?

Hi all. I'm huge into candles and waxes but I recently learned of how toxic the typical commercial products can be for pets. Essential oils are also toxic for cats and they're in just about every fragrance product out there. Anyone have any suggestions for cat-safe candles, sprays or waxes?

How to potty train a puppy?

Advice on roommates' cat's odour

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but looking for advice on cat odour control. I love my roommate, and his cat, but he is very defensive (roommate not cat!) and can be hot headed so hard to address this situation. His cat is an indoor, and I just got home from a trip and really noticed a strong smell in the house. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to help it or cover it up? He is careful about any house fragrance as he knows some can be unsafe for cats. He uses non clumping litter and I think only changes it once a week (scooping out poos a bit quicker), and if it were me I would be changing the litter he's using and changing it more often. But I know if I suggest that he will get very defensive and it will cause problems in the house.

I'd love any suggestions on how to make the house smell a bit fresher discreetly to not cause any arguments or hurt feelings. Are there any nice smelling house products safe for cats or any other tips? Many thanks!

Going through a divorce and my sweet little doggy is so sad as I pack up her home. How do I help?

What’s the best approach to helping my dog cope with losing her dad/other owner and her home.

It also has to be extra hard bc we got her a month and half ago (I was blindsided by the divorce) so she just had a big move.

I can tell she is scared and anxious and sad. Should I give her extra snuggles, take her on more walks, etc.?

I want to make her feel safe, loved, and stable even though the next few weeks we are going to be a big change.

Dog is very quiet/ almost lethargic indoors but fine on walks

Hi,

My 4 year old CKCS has always been a quiet and well behaved dog indoors but for the past 2-3 days he has been acting almost lethargic. Zero energy or enthusiasm doesn‘t eat a lot, sleeps most of the time. I must admit that I haven‘t been having the best days either so maybe it‘s rubbing off on him? His lack of energy indoors is starting to concern me. However, when I take him for a walk he is back to his old self, running like a maniac and seems to be happy. I walk him 3 times a day (short walks morning and evening and a longer off leash walk through fields of forest in the afternoon). Has anyone experienced similar behavior? Do you think I need to take him to the vet? Thanks for you help!

Taking my cat with me to college, but away from his siblings, am I an asshole?

So my family currently has three cats. Ford, who has been with me for about 3 years, is my cat. I provide for him and buy his own food and pay his vet bills. We other two cats that we recently got about a year ago. I love all three of them but Ford has always been my cat you know, I can't imagine living without him. The other two cats, Charlie and Oliver, are basically my sister's cats. Now, I'm off to move to the city with my girlfriend for college and I want to move Ford with me, but my sister is telling me that I shouldn't because it would be mean to Ford and that he'll be lonely. I told her that before getting Charlie and Oliver, he was an only cat and was happy to be so. He loves his siblings but I think he'll be fine being an only cat, for now. I'm thinking of getting another kitten for him, I just have to wait and save money. Am I an asshole and selfish for taking him away? I just can't even think of living in a new home without him.

Feline asthma advice?

My 7 year old female cat has asthma. She was diagnosed 2 years ago and took liquid Prednisolone which really helped. Coughing went away almost entirely.

She just started coughing a lot again last week. I can’t think of any environmental changes at all! But now she has mini attacks every hour or so stretching out her neck and wheezing for about 10 seconds.

I called the vet and they refilled the prescription and I picked it up and started giving it to her Tuesday.

The problem is she no longer will take it in her wet food. She loves to eat and last time I just squirted it into her wet food and she gobbled it up. Now she just lets the medicated food sit and won’t eat it. So yesterday and today I had to wrangle her to squirt it in her mouth which was terrible as she was freaking out!

Any advice on getting cats to take liquid meds?

My cat WILL. NOT. BE. QUIET.

We have a 16 year old cat. Good health other than he's deaf. We had him into the vet a week ago for a check-up before anyone asks. He's happy, and gets around just find. But he meows when I get up in the morning. And will NOT be quiet. These are nice meows. Not upset, but the kind where he makes different vocalizations and talks to me. The problem is that it's driving me crazy. He either sits or wanders around and just talks. He can't hear himself. But I can't even enjoy a morning anymore. He just won't be quiet. And my wife gets upset when she wakes up to find him locked in the bathroom (it's my only solution so I don't kill him). We've tried adjusting feeding times and everything else. Ignoring him for hours and hours doesn't work. Any ideas?

Edit - I should say this doesn't stop. Like, hours of constant meowing

Should I not be play fighting with my cat?

I didn't know enough to not play with my cat using my hands when she was little so now she's an adult cat that plays roughly with me (scratches and bites). Personally, I don't mind. I keep her claws clipped so they're not really an issue and she refrains from biting too hard. I'm willing to put up with it and indulge her since it is my fault she plays like this and I don't mind my hand always looking a little mangled.

She's never around children and I rarely have visitors (even then she's skittish so she hides) so I'm not worried about her hurting anyone else.

My friend saw me playing with her the other day and said I shouldn't be doing it since I'm aggravating her and making her violent? I wait for her to instigate a play session so I don't think I'm aggravating her and I back off when she decides she's had enough. It's mainly a way of tiring her out before bed since she ignores any toys I buy for her.

Anyway, I'm willing to accept that I may be wrong so I'd be glad to hear any other opinions.

How to sedate a skittish cat for grooming?

Ashe is a 3yo Manx/Maine Coon mix with impossibly long and plush fur. Seriously, she's like a collie and a chinchilla hybrid. I adopted her in February and she HAAAAAATES being brushed. No matter of treats will help, and somehow she goes from 7 lbs to 70 when we try to hold her down to brush/trim mats on her stomach and under arms. She's mauled four people over it. She doesn't hd still for even a moment of you touch her tummy. These mats appear very quickly and are massive. Mostly a daily brushing can help, but she won't let me touch her tummy.

Is there somewhere slightly cheaper than the vet (wants $100 to sedate and groom) to take her that won't stress her out too badly? She's not skittish but she hates when I'm not with her.

Thanks for the help!!!

Suggestions for what to do with a fish tank

Hi everyone, bare with me on this.

So I moved into a new place about a month ago and my mum gave me her old fish tank (800mm long x 450mm deep x 430mm high) and I've been really wondering on what to put in there. My family has had fish many times but I wanted to be different and avoid fish for the most part. I did look into possibly buying some stick insects to put in there, but I wanted to know what else could be done with the tank with them in there (eg: soil and plants etc). Everyone I've spoken to has suggested either getting a lizard or a turtle but from what I read they were extremely high maintenance and I'm looking for something a little more manageable.

If all else fails, I was planning on just getting a smaller tank for a betta and possibly catfish and selling the bigger one or just getting fish again. Anyone got any suggestions on what I could put in there besides fish or if it ends up being fish, what works well with a betta?

Thanks in advance!

How can I both keep a dog out of a room while leaving free passage to a cat

My dad recently got a puppy and as cute as this dog is, he constantly tries to play/attack/mount my cat and he gets into my room and tears things up as well as steal my shoes. We have a folded up card table that's blocking the hallway and my room door is closed but while it keeps the dog out it also keeps out my cat. Is there anyway I can let my cat through without letting the puppy through like without my own input? Because I'm not always there to let my cat in and out of my room.

Late night trips to the animal hospital

I posted a while back about my cats eye infection. Basically, he has an underlying viral infection that acts up when he gets stressed. His third eyelid swells to a small marble and he gets a fever among other things. We have to rush off to the vet because of the serious implications that can come from his eye.

This is the third time this has happened, and each time has been after my schedule changes and I’m not able to be home quite as often.

I have another cat who he loves bunches and a partner who is home more often then I am, so he’s getting plenty of pets and love. He’s just a mommas boy.

I can’t change my schedule back right now to be home more often, but my heart is breaking. How can I make this easier on my sweet boy?

Landlord not allowing pets

I have a 4 month old kitten that I love and do not want to give up, but my new landlord is not allowing me to have pets. Is it advisable to just bring my kitten with me since my landlord won't be around all the time?

Otherwise, will rehoming my kitten through the humane society be okay? I just want to make sure he goes to a good home

splitting up 3 good cat friends (cross posted on r/catadvice)

Hey everyone!

I'm still pretty new to reddit so if this is the wrong sub for this question please point me in the right direction.

Some background: I adopted two cats (male and female but not from the same litter) September of 2018, they were young so theyve grown up together and get along great. They're around 1.5yrs old now.

My life has been pretty hectic with travelling for work and having a slightly unstable living situation for the past two months, so my two cats have been living with my parents since June. Life has finally settled back down, so I am planning to bring both of them home this coming Tuesday.

The problem: My parents have a cat of their own (male, 5yrs) who was the solo kitty in the house until my two cats moved in. Since my two cats moved in, my parents cat has become much more social and is always spending time with my two cats and the three of them have become quite good friends (my male cat and my parent's cat are especially close buds).

I am very worried about what taking my two cats back is going to do to my parent's cat's emotional health. he's pretty smart and is a bit of a spaz, and I know he is going to be upset when I take them away. My parents also know this and they plan to get a 2nd cat to "fill the void".

My question is this: what's the best way to introduce a new cat to this situation? should we get a new cat now BEFORE I take my two home? immediately after mine leave? wait a week after mine leave? again I'm very concerned about his emotional response to his friends being suddenly gone.

tl;dr: parents have been taking care of my two cats, their single cat has become good friends with my two. how do I handle the separation process and the introduction of a new cat at my parent's house?

thanks in advance for any advice!
