Struvite crystals and Royal Canin Urinary So

Before I start I would liked to apologize if I sound like a crazy person. I love my cat dearly and I want to make sure I am doing the absolute best for her.

My Persian cat had struvite crystals at age 2. She was on a raw diet (nature’s variety). We tried hills and royal canin canned version which she would not eat so after one year we switched her back to raw commercial food. A year later she had blood in her urine again and this time I tried the dry urinary so and she loved it. She is now 5 and we never had a reoccurrence because she is still on the dry urinary so. I’m thinking of switching to canned food because the ingredients don’t seem too nutritious. I spoke with the vet and he said I can try a different food and switch back over to urinary so when another episode comes along-now that we know it works. The first time she had crystals she went to the vet then my friend brought over her kitten which may have stressed her out. The second time my parents left for vacation and I think that may have stressed her out. Her father apparently had struvite crystals at 8 years old and it was a result of the owner giving him alkaline water, according to the owner. Not sure if genetics or environment is at play.

I have three questions:

  1. Are there any cat owners who have fed their cats urinary so and had their cats live long lives? I’m talking 16+ years old.

  2. Is two years too young to have crystals?

  3. Do you think genetics or stress is more likely the cause?
