Cat sick after Metacam

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on this. Earlier this year my cat was diagnosed with arthritis and prescribed metacam to help with the pain.

After a couple weeks on it I noticed she wasn’t eating as much and was starting to vomit so I stopped immediately and booked an appointment with a vet who suggested it was likely just upsetting her stomach and that she likely still wasn’t eating because she now associated her food with being sick.

We switched her diet up but still she didn’t get better so I took her back. The vet this time requisitioned a urine test, followed by a blood test and it came back that she had kidney disease.

She was hospitalized the vets (it was supposed to be for 2 days but it ended up being closer to a week) before I got to take her home. Her vital signs were finally good and stable but she still wasn’t eating.

She’s now been home for close to two weeks, she still isn’t eating. She seems to have some good days (seems like her normal self only she won’t eat) and she has some bad days (curled up in pain).

I have been syringe feeding her, she was on potassium Gluconate, aminos, buprenorphine, antibiotics, and more recently went on an appetite stimulant.

She has a follow up appointment next week but it’s been hard watching her suffer like this. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get her to eat?

As well, I can’t seem to find any information on this but when cats get kidney issues from metacam how likely is it that they recover?

I love her so much but she mostly seems miserable these days and if she’s not going to get better I’d rather not keep putting her through this. Thanks everyone!
