splitting up 3 good cat friends (cross posted on r/catadvice)

Hey everyone!

I'm still pretty new to reddit so if this is the wrong sub for this question please point me in the right direction.

Some background: I adopted two cats (male and female but not from the same litter) September of 2018, they were young so theyve grown up together and get along great. They're around 1.5yrs old now.

My life has been pretty hectic with travelling for work and having a slightly unstable living situation for the past two months, so my two cats have been living with my parents since June. Life has finally settled back down, so I am planning to bring both of them home this coming Tuesday.

The problem: My parents have a cat of their own (male, 5yrs) who was the solo kitty in the house until my two cats moved in. Since my two cats moved in, my parents cat has become much more social and is always spending time with my two cats and the three of them have become quite good friends (my male cat and my parent's cat are especially close buds).

I am very worried about what taking my two cats back is going to do to my parent's cat's emotional health. he's pretty smart and is a bit of a spaz, and I know he is going to be upset when I take them away. My parents also know this and they plan to get a 2nd cat to "fill the void".

My question is this: what's the best way to introduce a new cat to this situation? should we get a new cat now BEFORE I take my two home? immediately after mine leave? wait a week after mine leave? again I'm very concerned about his emotional response to his friends being suddenly gone.

tl;dr: parents have been taking care of my two cats, their single cat has become good friends with my two. how do I handle the separation process and the introduction of a new cat at my parent's house?

thanks in advance for any advice!
