Advice on adopting a cat

I've been thinking of adopting a cat for awhile now. At first I was really excited then after some research I got a little worried. Now I'm terrified and overwhelmed from all the research I've done trying to figure out how to make the cat comfortable until she adjusts and some of the issues. So I've seen that giving the cat space is important at first but I live in a small apartment and have no extra rooms and my bathroom is small. So I was thinking of putting her in my bedroom because I'm only in there if I'm taking a nap or sleeping. Would that be a good idea? I know they say put the litter box somewhere where you want to keep it and I really don't want to keep it in my bedroom. Also I use a fan all the time so would that freak her out? I'm also worried about her not using the litter box and my carpet is dark so I couldn't tell if she hadn't been using it until the smell pops up. So I was thinking of laying plastic down but I think it will scare her or make her not use the box. Another thing is I'm disabled so I can't get down on the floor and talk to her and be at eye level like a lot of places recommend. Could that be a problem? Also I've seen you should take them to the vet as soon as possible but how soon is too soon? And you might need to give her a bath but how long should I wait for that? Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated.I apologize if any of this is stupid.
