How can I help my cat gain confidence / be less scared of everything?

We adopted our cat (Churchill) back in November. He's 6 years old, and lived his whole life in a cat colony prior to moving in with us.

Even to this day, he is scared of a lot of things. When he is walking on the floor and we walk past him, he will run away. If he is close to a door and we slowly open it, he will also run away. Same goes when we move clothes around, it scares him. He also tends to hug the walls when on the ground, and never jumps up, except to go on the couch or our bed.

That being said, there is some hope. When he is sleeping on the couch or our bed, he isn't timid at all. He will let himself be cuddled like there's no tomorrow, and will even ask for more when we stop.

If this helps to know, he had to have all his teeth extracted. I don't know if this could worsen timid behavior...
