Over a year ago, my Chihuahua started to develop a perianal hernia. Since the hernia wasn't bothering her, and she was able to "go" outside without a problem, the surgeon we consulted was not eager to perform the mesh surgery. We didn't do the surgery because the surgeon told us that the area required more musculature and stability than her anatomy has, and she also had a bum knee in the back. She flat out said she wouldn't do it if it was her dog: because the rehab in and of itself would be hard, and that she couldn't guarantee the mesh would hold on this $5,000 surgery.
Lil Bit is at least 12 years old, (very likely 14 to 16) as we've had her for eight years since she showed up without tags or a microchip, and was never claimed despite effort, back in 2014.
So anyway, she recently started to make crying noises at night time, and I've noticed that her hernia can't be easily pushed in anymore.
So what I'm getting at, is if this is the type of thing where a dog is put down? I don't want her to suffer, and I don't have countless thousands of dollars for this surgery on an older dog, and possibly reduce her quality of life. I feel TERRIBLE saying this, but that is the truth.
Anyone else have to go through something like this?
