Recently adopted a cat from the shelter, then found out my son was allergic.

I feel horrible. I know, I know, we probably should have some allergy testing before bringing in a new pet. I have two sons, ages 3 and 5. The 5 year old is allergic. His eyes get blood shot and itchy and he starts sneezing. My other son is perfectly fine and snuggles with the cat. Myself and my husband have no issues as well. My son has gone to our neighbors house a few times, and they have two cats and I hadn’t noticed any issues. He has no other known allergies, and is usually a very healthy child. But I just know it’s the cat. He’s fine when he leaves for school. He gets sick when he comes home.

Is there anything I can do to make the allergies less severe? I hate seeing my son like this. But I don’t want to rehome the cat. He is such a sweet and amazing kitty. I also don’t want my son to have to live off of antihistamines anytime he is at home. I will try as many methods as I can to reduce the allergies, but ultimately my sons health is more important.
