Want to get a dog but not sure about the commitment, any pet recommendations that have shorter lifespans?

Hey! So I’m going through a really rough time right now. My 4 year long relationship ended in a long and drawn out way about 10 months ago (/still feels ongoing?) and I’m still a mess from it. The complete deprivation of what was once regular love and affection is part of my pain. I know I don’t plan to try to re-enter the dating scene for about another year or so due to some personal stuff going on in my life right now. But I know I need to fill that loss of affection, and my mind keeps turning to getting a dog. I had dogs when I was younger and absolutely loved them, was very big on training and playing and all that. I’ve always been better with dogs than most people around me. I’ve been wanting to get a rescue pup for a while, an intelligent breed I can work with and take on hikes and so on. I feel like the unconditional love from a dog would be good for me. But at the same time, a dog is (barring tragedies) a 12 or so year commitment. I’m not 100% certain that’s a commitment I’m ready to take, as I’m still young and really want to do a lot of traveling in the years after this next year. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe other pets which much shorter lifespans that would also offer similar affection? Or something else to turn to?
