When I worked at a wildlife sanctuary taking care of foxes, my boss told me about a really good story of justice!
Most of the foxes at our sanctuary were there because someone had them as a pet, and then didn't want them anymore (this happens to over 70% of pet foxes). The most common reason people give up on owning a fox is that they can't take the smell.
Thankfully, these people at least gave the fox to us. Some foxes aren't so lucky. There was apparently a case about 20 years ago of a couple just abandoning their 3 pet foxes in the woods to die, since they had been raised by humans.
Thankfully, the police caught them and charged them with animal abandonment. When the judge asked them why they did it, they apologized and said they just couldn't take the smell anymore...so the judge said he wasn't going to give them what they wanted.
They agreed to a plea deal to avoid jail time and be sentenced to a month of house arrest...on the condition that they buy a bottle of fox urine (yes, you can buy it online, people use it to scare rabbits out of their garden) for every room in their house, and leave it open at all times
Speaking as someone who's worked with foxes...I think I'd take the jail time. shudder
