A dog (with a collar, no tags) randomly showed up on my friends porch and stayed for a week. My friend couldn't take him in because of his landlord; I volunteered to take him in.
I am extremely empathetic and impulsive to a fault. I work in social work and my instinct is to act immediately to help. I've fostered a dog once in the past but I haven't actually owned or trained a dog myself. Also, I'm a full time college student with two jobs and I live alone.
I immediately drove to my friends house, picked the dog up and took him to the vet to see if he was microchipped. He was not.
I've had him for three days now and he is a handful. I was incredibly naive going into this. I have zero experience training a dog and I feel like I'm awful at it. He isn't house trained, he jumps on people, and has a biting problem. I'm aware that dogs need discipline and I'm trying to be stern but it's not very effective. When i try to discipline him he starts licking me and tries to cuddle which is a clear sign that he is not intimidated by me. I've posted all over the lost/found pet pages in my city and no luck so far with an owner. Initially, I thought that I could foster him until he found a good home. However, he isn't neutered and I'm not sure if he has any vaccines.
I've considered adopting but it's not really an option. I cannot afford his vet bills--I've been laid off from one of my two jobs due to the pandemic. Also, once the quarantine ends I will no longer be able to adequately take care of him considering my normal work/school schedule. Additionally, I'm graduating college soon and am looking to move abroad for an extended period of time so I cannot adopt long-term even if I had enough resources to do so.
I haven't had any luck finding his owners. I'm in way over my head here. What is the best ethical thing to do here?
