I recently moved homes with my cat [1 year and 3 mo, neutered male, indoors only] (into my student house from my parent's house) and within the first 10 min of being there he was already exploring my entire room, which surprised me as he can be quite shy.
He wasn't too enthusiastic about my housemates dropping in to say hi, watching them warily from under my desk. I set him up in my room as I did when I first got him with all his favourite toys, blankets that smell like him, his scratch posts, his litterbox, his food etc. We've been sticking to our normal routine back home.
Last night after we finished our pre-bedtime routine, he sprinted out of my room upstairs, saw my housemates, froze and ran back to my room. He did this twice. Today, he kept waiting by my door and meowing to be let out. I left the door open and let him explore at his own pace, supervising him the whole time. It all went fine until he went to the top floor (room is in the basement) and he peed in the bathtub.
Prior to this he had used his litterbox a couple times. He's never had a litterbox issue before. I cleaned it up with enzymatic cleaner and ushered him back to my room with a toy. I have been keeping him there all afternoon (he's just been sleeping). What should my next steps be? Should I let him explore again, or keep him in this room for a while longer?
