My boyfriend and I took our 7-month-old husky pup Koda for a run in the park. It was around 7:30 and there was no one around the park for a while. Koda and I have been working on off-leash training for some time, but he isn't perfect. He usually comes when I call or when I am too far away from him. Tonight he was doing really well until a couple with a medium-sized Maltese or Yorkie comes along. Koda slowly approaches the dog but the owner immediately starts to freakout yelling "No" and turning his body around and dragging his dog with him. He was yelling so much that Koda couldn't hear my commands or focus on me because the angry owner was the most exciting thing for him. The owner wasn't having it and he whips out pepper spray and sprays Koda with it. My boyfriend got mad really quick and a short argument broke out, and the owner threatened to spray Koda again the next time he sees him. I was upset that he would resort to something like that when Koda and the other dog doesn't seem to pose a threat to each other. I know taking a dog off-leash is risky and they should be very responsive to commands when off-leash and I work with Koda every day to achieve that and he's ignored dogs in the past when I call him. I'm not sure if I responded the right way and I am now afraid that I'm going to have to put a stop to off-leash training because of people like him. I guess I'm just asking who was more in the wrong and what to do if something like this ever happens again, and if I should even continue doing off-leash training.
