Hey there,
I've arrived at a point in my life where I finally feel comfortable enough financially and with my career (thanks to WFH) to adopt a dog. I may be getting one as soon as Monday/Tuesday depending on if the in-person visit goes well.
And I'm kind of freaking out.
I've been around dogs my entire life. My parents have raised 4 large-breed dogs and everyone in my family has at least some kind of dog.
I have a studio apartment. I don't have a back yard or porch or anything like that, but my apartment does have a nice dog relief area, and there's a pretty huge park across the street from me.
But am I crazy for doing this? The dog I'm looking at it is about 4 years old, a terrier mix. I want to give this dog everything (it's had a bit of a chaotic life). But I'm starting to doubt myself as to whether or not I can handle raising a pet. What does a dog do all day when you're not giving it all of your attention? I've always taken care of dogs from time to time and of course enjoyed playing with them, but I've never lived with one before and I'm honestly a bit terrified of screwing it up somehow.
How do you handle restlessness? House training? Biting/destructive habits? I know, I know, there's probably a million resources out there on these things but I'm just hoping to hear from someone else who is raising a dog in an apartment and find out what kinds of things I should worry about, and what kinds things I should look out for.
I also would love to know what resources you guys prefer on things for crate training.
Basically, I guess I'm just looking for some encouragement here that what I'm doing is absolutely possible and will result in a good life for my dog.
