(Feel free to skip this little rant)
I have 3 rats and love them to death, but they are always sick and I already lost a young one to cancer.
I don't mind spending money on their vet bills, my problem is their quality of life. I hate seeing my pets ill, it destroys me. I already have many chronic illnesses, so that's why I have such a trauma when it comes to health. I hope you guys can understand my paranoia.
After my ratties pass I'm considering getting a different pet, and I'd really want one that is sturdier and healthier. This made me wonder: what's the healthiest pet?
In my experience cats are the healthiest animals I've owned, being chronic kidney disease my biggest concern when it comes to them, but I've never owned anything other than dogs, cats and rats, so I wonder if there are better options. Keep in mind that I'm very aware there's no such thing as a disease free species, but I want something close to that.
TL;DR: What's the healthiest pet available? It can be anything, from dogs, to cats, to horses, to birds, to lizards and others exotics like hedgehogs and sugar gliders. And with healthy I mean one that rarely gets sick provided you take care of it well.
(I currently live in Japan, so pets that are legal here would be preferred)
