Hello,
We've had our cat for nearly 8 years now and had him fixed as soon as we adopted him (we think he's about 9 years old). He's always been more on the aggressive side, always full of energy, and he used to bite and scratch all of us (Mom, dad, and myself) in a playful manner but never hurt us badly.
Now after this long, and ironically my mom mostly taking care of him since I was very young when we got him, he is straight up attacking her and her only. Years and years ago we tried to see if we could get his teeth filed down or something and were promptly told that was inhumane and that it would be unhealthy for him, but it wasn't bad or dangerous for us then. Around a year ago he bit my mom so deep in her arm that she got an abscess and had to go to the hospital and get an IV drip--turns out he bit her into a muscle and somehow deposited bacteria from his mouth and severely infected her (red streaks and all), and IIRC they told her that if it happened 2 more times they'd have to put him down. Tonight, he jumped up and bit her right on the top of her head and scratched her face. It's only been like 20 minutes and now he's sleeping like a baby next to her on the floor :(
He has never attacked me before. I live with only my mom currently, but even when we have other family members over, he never attacks anybody the way he attacks her. He will only attack her late at night, and get one really good bite in before he's lazy again. She does not provoke him in any way before he attacks her. I don't understand. I really do not understand why he behaves like this. I mean, she was the one whose neck he sucked on for the first three fucking weeks, why does he attack her of all people!? I don't even let him into my room at night! We've tried so hard over the years to get him to stop biting and scratching us, but to no avail, and now I'm really horrified that we'll have to give him up. She's threatening to get his teeth removed completely! She doesn't care anymore! But I fucking care!!!
I thought cats were supposed to be like potato sacks with a heartbeat after they're fixed (save for mice and roaches, I've learned that much) but ours is the complete opposite. I swear to god he's lazy half the day until she comes home and starts to relax. My family had a lot of cats and dogs when I was younger and none of them were vicious, especially not like this. She didn't want to adopt him in the first place for her own reasons and, even though she loves him, definitely resents him a little bit anyway. Realistically, I know this can't go on. I just can't imagine my life without him right now. I know he'll die someday, but not right now. I very much hope that's not the only option.
What the hell are we supposed to do? Was he not fixed properly or what? Will we have to have him put down? He's only bit her to hospitalization once, but we both know that it could very well happen again.
TL;DR: 9y.o. male cat violently attacks my mother unprovoked and is truly a danger to her specifically (she was hospitalized once because of it), but he does not attack anybody else. He will attack her--or try to--once a night; otherwise, he's either lazy or normally playful. Mom either wants his teeth filed/removed or to give him up. What do we do with something like this? Does he have to be put down?
Thank you so much for any responses.
