When I've been at my friend's house his puppy (he had her for a few months) was really really anxious. She was barking, shaking like a jelly and hiding. I've never seen a dog so scared and I've interacted with a abused doggy before (the puppy isn't abused for sure, my friend adores her. He's also her first owner).
I found out what was the issue shortly after. I wanted to let her sniff my hand so she could feel just a littlebit safer but he wouldn't let me. He dragged her away and told me to "leave her alone, she clearly hates you".
I get it, it's your baby, you love her and want the best for her but it's not the way to go!! If she was a huge dog I'm sure she'd be more thritening and they would have to put her go sleep asap which is terrible!!
After my friend got buisy with something else I've let her sniff my hand a few times and gently touched her. After that even though she was still scared and unsure she wasn't running away from me and let me pet her. She even came to me and sniffed my back. She's adorable!!
Honestly, maybe I'm being harsh but I hate when people say " don't do that to that pet, they hate you" without seeing the full picture. All they look at is that certain interaction "dog barked at this person, this person is the problem" which can be but is not always the case.
Years ago two of my cousins loved to play with my cat, Julia, which lead to fighting. She got so traumatised she was shaking whenever she saw them. Once I was talking with my aunt and mum in the kitchen, holding her while she was purring. When my cousin came in she got scared again and my aunt said "look, she has enough of you, let her go!!". Then my cousin backed her up and tried to take her away from me, which was really annoying. Long story short, I let her go but played it off like she ran away..
