My 3yr old, 15lbs miniature dachshund has been having some skin issue that we just can't figure out.
For some background, this past summer (Jun-Aug) we stayed in GA for a few months with some family. My baby is on oral anti flea/tick/heartworm meds we get from his vet and we made sure to take enough with us when we went because we knew the bugs down south can be pretty bad. Even with this we still managed to pick up a few fleas early on which caused some dermatitis. I was extremely worried because he's never had any skin issues before however a bath and a good brushing seemed to take care of most of the issues. THEN my MIL brought home a sickly kitten that she had found at work and she would allow it to play with my dog and lay on my dogs things. This is around the time my dachshund skin took a turn for the worse. When we returned back home to VA we started to notice that our dog was extremely itchy and was loosing A LOT of fur. His skin started to look like paper and he had pus covered scabs mating his fur. I was convinced it was mites so I made an appointment at the vet. Before that appt he got really sick and couldn't hold down any food and was running a temperature. I took him to the emergency vet and they gave him some fluids and a medication in his IV to help the itching and swelling of the skin. They said there were no mites. Later, in a follow up with his regular vet, I was told that it was just dermatitis and that regular baths with a shampoo they prescribed would take care of it. When nothing changed I took him back and had them do all labs possible. They said everything came back perfect except that my dog was "over weight". Ive changed his food, Ive had a new shampoo prescribed, I got him oral medications and vitamins and absolutely nothing has made this go away. After I changed his food back to "Wellness" (we had switched to another brand with similar stats when we got got home in aug cause he's picky and didn't want his food anymore) the skin issues seemed to improve drastically (no more pus, less itching, less swelling) but its still obviously bothering him and his shedding/dandruff have stayed the same if not gotten worse. Has anyone out there experienced something like this with their fur baby. Any suggestion as to what might be the issue? I just want him to feel better and have healthy beautiful skin/fur like he did before we went on that damn trip.
*notes* 1.he gets a bath at least once a week now with vet prescribed shampoo otherwise his itching overwhelms him 2.his food has changed 3 times (wellness > solid gold > wellness) 3.his flea/tick/heart-worm meds haven't changed 4. picture were taken after being thoroughly brushed before his bath. 5.sorry for the extra long post.
