Advice needed: My cat is suddenly terrified of all shoes. (Seriously)

A few weeks ago, my fiancé brought home a new pair of boots. My younger cat, Phoebe, FLIPPED. She wouldn’t go near them, fur raised, tail fluffy. We thought it was a funny quirk, and that she would get used to it.

Nope.

Now she is terrified of ALL shoes. Flip flops, flats, slippers, doesn’t matter. On or off our feet. And while it’s somewhat comical, it’s also causing her a lot of distress. We obviously cannot eliminate the “threat” - we need shoes. We also keep shoes by the door (when wet or muddy), and often wear them indoors.

We tried showing her that there is no threat. She was terrified. We tried moving most our shoes in one bedroom, but she’s still very stressed about it. She knows they’re there. She often slinks around corners, low to the ground, looking out for them.

She’s visibly stressed, doesn’t want to play. Tries to hide under beds and blankets. She’s generally more skittish than us usual. It might be important to mention that Phoebe is somewhat special, she took a lot of time to mellow out as a cat, and still has kitten tendencies.

We feel so bad, I don’t know what else might help.

Any advice, Reddit?
