Cat overly aggressive.

My partner and I have a roommate who has a 2 year old cat in our apartment. She's a very timid, sweet, black cat. We wanted a cat of our own so decided to adopt an older cat from a no cage shelter with the reasoning that since she's older and more accustomed to other felines being around her, she would have no issue with the younger black cat in our apartment. We were very wrong. We introduced them slow, through scents, shared feeding times behind a door, time together behind a screen door. Things seemed fine, so we let them mingle after about 2 weeks. After a few days, our older cat started becoming more aggressive until we had to separate them. Now our older cat mainly stays in our room because she's just so damn mean to the younger black cat. It's completely on sight now, her tail puffs up and she charges whenever she gets a glance at the younger cat. When the younger cat is picked up, our older cat will actively try to find the younger one, and search the apartment for her. I'm at a complete loss on what to do, is our cat just incredibly mean? The younger cat shows no signs of aggression during these altercations, and she usually sprints as fast as she can away from the older cat while she chases her. We love both cats, but we have no idea what to do at this point.
