I adopted a 1 year old cat a week ago from the shelter with no known history. Once I took her home she started displaying a lot of food aggression. Every time there is food out, whether it’s mine or hers, she swats me, and even scratched me once. She spends a good amount of the night meowing for food and part of the day too. I play with her multiple times a day and pet her often. I’m home 24/7 because of the pandemic, but I am in school and I have been able to get nothing done because I have spent my week attending to her and trying to keep her out of trouble when she’s looking for food. Since I have put everything away, she just jumps around clawing at cabinets, jumping between appliances, and licking surfaces. She is normal weight and I am feeding her the same diet the shelter did, where she gained weight, so I don’t think she’s starving. My first vet appointment is the first available and is in 2 weeks.
I can’t open any package or walk by places with food (like the fridge) without her meowing and going crazy for an hour. For example, today, I opened a bag of cotton balls and she went ballistic thinking it was food. After I let her smell it and decide she didn’t want it, she seemed to be reminded of food and so the crazy food behavior started again. She was foraging my apartment for an hour, meowing constantly, licked clean my trash can lid, and my apartment counters. I can’t keep her out of anywhere in my apartment because I live in a studio and it’s just the one room and a bathroom, where she cries the entire time if I put her in there (like when I need to eat my own food without having to dodge attacks the whole time). There is no human food that she strays from, including trying to eat citrus, garlic, etc that are toxic.
Tonight, I fed her 1/4 cup of kibble (her 3rd of the day after wet food and treats), and immediately after she was still foraging. After 2 hours of meowing and running around looking for food while I was trying to sleep, I went to go shower to get some peace. When I came back, she had a rat claw waiting for me. No rat, just the wrist and claw. I’m 100% positive that’s what it is, I can see all the nails and everything. Looks exactly like it’s shown on Google. I don’t let her outside. Outside my apartment door is a hallway. I don’t know where the rest of the body of the rat is and how fresh the rat is, but that is a problem I will also have to take up with my apartment complex.
After I dealt with this, she was still meowing so I gave her some food in the case she is starving tonight. That only made her crazier. She started jumping around above my cabinets and fridge, and tried jumping on my hanging lights fixtures, and meowing at me the entire time because she kept falling. She then licked my entire kitchen sink clean for the 3rd time tonight, despite me cleaning it with soap and not having used it since then.
I will note that she seems completely fine in between crazy food episodes for a few hours at a time throughout the day. But I have not slept since the day I adopted her and this behavior has only gotten worse each day and night I have had her.
This was kind of my final straw and I don’t know if there’s any other option but to bring her back to the no kill shelter that I adopted her from. Please help!!
