I've had a female taby cat for 9 years now, and she's always been very attached to me and my family. However she's always anxious around guests, and almost never warms up to the visitors (unless they literally live here for months). So recently my best friend hit a rough patch and asked if I could babysit his cat for a few weeks, so my cat has been living downstairs with my sister. Usually she's free to roam upstairs or downstairs whenever she wants, but I am keeping the cats isolated. I've tried to introduce them to eachother a few times, but my cat is super defensive and hissing and tries to scratch the other cat.
So now it's week two, and my cat barely moves around, usually just sitting on my sister's bed pouting. Whenever I go to pet her, she meows loudly and bites me if I continue. She's never been like this before. I took her to the vet today, and they immediately asked if her enviroment changed, and diagnosed her with anxiety and depression. So today she will be starting on amitriptyline, and I have to make her take it every evening. (I tried putting it in her food, chicken, and hamburger, and she refused it. So I looked up a video on how to safely make her take it.)
So my question is: How can I make this situation better for her? If I stop babysitting the guest cat, my friend will have to send him back to the shelter, and I don't want that to happen to him, but my cat of 9 years is breaking my heart.
