My dog just got out of the hospital from surgery for herniated discs

I’m already overwhelmed and it’s only day 0.

I just tried to take him out to pee. He crawled out of his crate onto his bed (made it easy for him to get out) so that I could pick him up. But then he just wanted to lay down and roll over for belly rubs. I need him to sit up or lay on his belly in order to pick him up without hurting him, but he doesn’t understand. Eventually being firm with him did the trick and he sat up, but I think it was just luck.

When we got outside, it took me a minute or two to adjust the support sling so that it wasn’t covering his crotch. But then he didn’t try to pee. I feel so bad for him. I don’t want him to have to pee in his crate while I’m sleeping.

He is a rescue dog, and he is not vocal at all when he’s got to go to the bathroom. The only way I’ve kept him from going inside is taking him out at the same times of day, every day of the week.

The saving grace is that I’m not alone - my partner is here to help. But we really don’t know what we’re doing. The hospital gave an info dump over the phone and some general instructions printed out.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated
