Roommate threatened to get rid of my cat

Alright for some context, I am living with a guy and a girl. The guy has his own cat, and I adopted one shortly after moving in. He is currently only 7 months or so old. So the guy roommate texted me telling me that if I don't don't do something about my cat, he was going to get rid of him. My cat is known to jump up on tables (which I don't really have a problem with but apparently he does), claw up carpet (which is a result of them locking him up in a room as a "punishment" and something I said to stop doing), and try to steal food from us. I've done things like using a spray bottle, picking him up and putting him down, using a stern voice (which I don't think is very effective). Apparently though that isn't enough and I don't do my part in "punishing" him. I'm against hitting my cat in any way so that's out of the question. I don't know what my roommate expects me to do to try and correct a kitten's behavior but if there's any training tips or something please let me know
