Two winters ago this little kitten showed up on my back porch just meowing and meowing like crazy. He was flea infested and very underweight and it was easy to see he needed a good home. I cleaned him up and took him to the vet the next day. They ran some bloodwork on him and vaccinated him and treated his fleas. Unfortunately we learned that he was positive for feline leukemia. I had never had a cat before but I knew if I took him to the shelter he would be put down so he couldnt infect the other cats. I decided to keep him because I just couldnt let that happen. He fit right in with my family and got along with everyone including the dogs. He loves to lay on your chest and has been nothing but sweet and gentle. He was able to put on weight and then some because the vet was concerned he was approaching being too heavy. All was going well until about a month ago. He continues to eat like he normally does but he is losing weight like crazy. I am starting to feel ribs and hip bones and shoulder blades. The vet recommended mixing in some kitten food with his normal meals but it hasnt seemed to have had much of an effect. He isnt lethargic and is still running and playing but I'm so worried about where he is at. Then about a week ago he stopped using his litter box as much as he used to. He still uses it a little bit but most of the time he is just peeing on soft surfaces like the couch or blankets and pooping wherever. The vet didnt find any UTI or anything like that so he thinks this is just related to his cancer finally taking over his body. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and can tell me what their experience with a leukemia cat was like. Is there any advice you can give me during this process? I knew the leukemia was going to eventually take over but it's hard to accept that this time is already here. Thanks.
