Hello friends!
I am hoping to get a new pet, but I need advice on what to get. I can't afford nor do I have the space for a large pet like a cat or dog right now. I just need something that I can love and care for. If any of you would be willing to take the time to look through my requirements and give me some suggestions, I would really appreciate it. I know it's a lot, so no worries if you don't have time! :) I will be posting this in a lot of different places to hopefully get as much advice as possible.
Here is what I am looking for:
Price: At least under $50 a month for regular care and maintenance, and not over $500 for one-time/emergencies supplies or procedures. But please don't hesitate to suggest something a little higher than this if you think that you know something perfect for me.
Space: I only have my bedroom to use, so it has to be either a cage animal (I don't mind large cages) or an animal that can be trusted in a bedroom alone and doesn't poop all over everything (aka can be trained to use a specific place to do its business). I am also open to a pet that can be in a cage/enclosure for a long period of time but sometimes needs to be let out in to a bit of extra space (like my whole room or even around the house) to stretch its legs/wings.
Type: I do not want a amphibians, fish, insects, or reptiles. I am only open to furry animals or birds that match my needs/wants.
Smell: I need something that isn't going to be overwhelmingly smelly, but am willing to put up with either a small smell or a smell that can easily be contained (aka doesn't fill up a room and stay there as long as the pet is there) or a smell that is only bad if you don't take care of the pet well (because I intend on taking very good care of them).
Commitment Level: I work 8 am to 5 pm every week day but plan on having people who are willing to help out with small things if I'm ever unable to be there. Plus I will make sure if I'm ever gone for a long time, a capable person will be able to care for them. Other than that I have a lot of extra time to spend training, petting, playing with, cleaning, feeding, and/or caring for them.
Allergies: I have none that I know of, but will make sure to find someone who owns the pet I choose to buy that will let me pet the animal before I buy them just to test for allergies to be sure.
Noise Level: I know birds are incredibly noisy, but if there are any who aren't that loud I'd love to hear about them. Other than that, as long as they are relatively quiet, I don't mind a bit of noise (like squeaks or scampering).
Maintenance/Mess Level: I am fine with getting messy trying to clean the pet's habitat. I already had a betta fish in a five gallon tank. It's hard to get a much more high maintenance animal. I will commit as much time as is necessary to make the animal healthy and happy.
Bond/Attachment: I would love an animal that knows me and/or his/her name, but I know that is hard to come by in small animals. However, I definitely want one that can learn to trust me enough (don't care how long that process takes) that I can handle them and pet them occasionally. I am gentle and responsible with animals so it is okay if the animal you have in mind is fragile or easily over-stimulated, I will be very careful and responsive to the animal's needs/reactions. I'd also love one that can be trained to do tricks with diligence and time.
Looks/Appearance: Don't care what the animal looks like or what their cage/enclosure looks like as long as they fulfill all or some of the requirements above.
Personality Requirements:. I do not want an animal that is known to just hide 24/7 and cannot be trained or coaxed to be even somewhat social. I don't want an animal that cannot be trained/coaxed not to bite or scratch.
Lifespan: Can't do an animal that has an average life span of over 10-20 years.
Habitat/Environment: They will have a quiet environment and I will not be allowing children, other people, and/or other pets (like cats/dogs) to be in their space without intense supervision and caution, and even then it will be very rare for them to have to deal with such visitors if they are not the type to enjoy such interactions/disruptions.
Pairs/Multiples: As long as they don't cost over $300 collectively at once or over $50 monthly collectively, I am willing to buy multiples or pairs of animals to make them happy.
Other Considerations: I live in suburban Colorado. I am a responsible pet owner willing to do what it takes to keep an animal healthy and happy and would never neglect or hurt any animal, ever, period.
If you have any other information you need, just comment below asking for it! If you have any suggestions that match SOME but not ALL of the above needs/wants, just let me know which ones they don't fulfill. Don't hold back just because you aren't 100% sure if the animal does/doesn't fulfill all my requirements. No judgement here! Just looking for suggestions to help start my search. :)
If it seems like I'm over thinking it, that is because I am. ;)
Thanks!
