My cat unexpectedly passed away a couple hours ago; what should we do in our final hours with her?

Our cat passed away very suddenly late tonight, just under 3 hours ago. She was old, but this was still unexpected and extremely rapid. She passed at 10:15pm; it's now 2:00am and we will have no choice but to have her cremated in the morning.

We're trying to think of things we can do in our final hours with her that will help us grieve and/or give us a way of remembering her. I have memory challenges, so physical keepsakes are particularly powerful and meaningful for me.

What are some helpful things that you have seen cat (or pet) owners do before giving up their pet's body to cremation-- or wish they would have done? I can't rely on memories alone, and I know this sub's members see people love and lose their pets every day; I didn't want to kick myself later for not asking you until it was too late.

  • We've made a couple paw prints in the past using salt dough, so we tried that again tonight. It didn't work very well; maybe we got the recipe wrong.

  • We also used craft paint on her front paws to get a stamp in a little shadow box; it turned out only okay, but definitely better than nothing.

Thank you for any suggestions. We've never lost a pet. We're barely holding ourselves together and we're exhausted but I don't think we'll be sleeping tonight. We recognize we have very little time to cement final memories and/or create keepsakes to keep with us (especially me) for the rest of our lives.
