My dog doesn't know how to play at all

My boyfriends dog Rolo is a Miniature Pinscher and he is 3 years old. He's always had a problem with not knowing how to play. He LOVES to play, but he plays his way which is problematic.

For one, he plays keep away with any toys. We had a problem for awhile that we didn't realize until later, where someone would throw him a toy, and he'd disappear with it then come back without it wanting you to throw another toy. We found out he was stashing them under our bed lol.

And the other thing is trying to take him out in the yard to throw a tennis ball. He will run after it, then take it as far away from us as possible instead of bringing it back for us to throw again. Oh, and he can get very aggressive over his food bowl and any bone we give him. So he obviously has issues with being territorial, which I've started to try to train out of him by teaching him to "leave it" so I can take his bone away without losing a finger or three.

He loves to play with our other dog and cat and he has so much energy. But he will not play properly with toys and we want to address this so we can play with him correctly and avoid any aggression from him. We tried a few times taking treats out to give him if we could get him to bring the ball, but he just gets hyperfocused on the treats and stops caring about fetch altogether. Help??
