Adopting older cat as first timer?

On my local marketplace there are a few senior cats 8-12 years old that need to be rehomed. Most of these owners have had them since they were kittens. Would it be hard to develop a deep bond with these cats? I read you can bond with them through playing, would they have the energy and motivation to play at such an old age?

Ive been mostly looking at younger cats about 2-3 years old since I'm under the assumption they're more willing to play with you thus developing a deeper and stronger bond.
