So for context I have two indoor cats, roughly 5 years old. They were were both litterbox trained (not by me) when I got them at 10 weeks old, and it hasn't been an issue. I keep two (extra large) litterboxes for them and clean them every other day with a proper wash out every so often, which seemed to work fine for everyone involved.
Fast forward 4 years. One of my cats stopped using the box to poop. He'll still urinates in the box (I think...i haven't noticed any smells/stains elsewhere) but when he has to poop, he goes in front of the litterbox on the carpet. Other than that his behavior is perfectly normal and he's very affectionate. My other cat still uses the box as he always has.
This started out of nowhere, and I can't get him to stop. I switched to cleaning the boxes daily, swapped the boxes for brand new ones, removed/added a door, took him to the vet, and when I see him going outside the box I shout or spray him with water. Nothing seems to register with him to go back to his old behavior.
What else do I try or ask my vet about?
EDIT: I don't know if it matters but he's a bit overweight and heavier than his brother. Could that have an effect
