Hi all! I have a quick question regarding living with pets while you have an allergy and was hoping folks here might have advice.
Next year I'm moving to a new city and planning to move in with a friend (who is moving there at the same time). The only problem is, she has a cat and I have a cat allergy. I love animals and would love to live with her--and her cat!--but I'm wondering whether it would be excessively stupid for me to do so, considering the allergy.
To give some context: I have extremely severe seasonal allergies as well, so I'm used to taking allergy medication & vacuuming frequently. I also have a mild allergy to dogs, but grew up with a high-shed breed and never felt the dog allergy while growing up. Now, whenever I visit my parents' house, it bothers me for a couple of days but it usually goes away after that. I worked in a small animal pet store in high school (rabbits/guinea pigs/birds) and it didn't bother my allergies too much, but that was nearly 11 years ago.
Unfortunately, I definitely feel the cat allergy when I go to friends' apartments, including this friend's, but it isn't unbearable. I do get mild hives around my neck/face if I pick up the cat or touch my face. If I were to move in with this friend, my plan was to keep my bedroom door closed/locked during the day and keep a good air purifier in my room (I'm also starting allergy shots in the fall, yay new health insurance!). I generally do this already due to my seasonal allergies, so it wouldn't be too much of a burden. Additionally, we would be moving in to the apartment at the same time, so it's not like her cat would've previously been in the room.
I tried researching the topic, but most of the posts that I found were from people whose roommates unexpectedly got a pet, rather than people who actually want to live with an animal that they are (inconveniently) allergic to. Does anyone have advice or suggestions? I'd love to hear from people who've been in a similar situation, even if the advice is "this is a bad idea."
Thanks all! :)
(Also, if I'm posting in the wrong forum, I apologize!)
