Both of my newborn kittens died (x-post with r/cats) [Advice Wanted]

My mom had rescued a cat about 2 months ago. We didn't realize she was pregnant, but sure enough a month later, she gave birth to two kittens. It's clearly her first (and last, she's set for a spay) litter.

One kitten died on the second day. I wasn't here, but it seemed like he got too cold so we tried out best to keep the other one warm.

The other one died this morning. He was 3 weeks and 2 days old. He seemed perfectly fine last night. I had been giving him treatment every day for an eye infection, and this morning he was already cold and stiff.

I'm wondering if it's because we handled him too much, giving him eye ointment and also my mom always wanting to pet him. Or if it was because mama cat was only ever in there seldomly, to feed him. She fed him enough and often, but she would leave the nest when she was done all the time.

I work in a veterinary field and I'm used to animal death. But this is hitting me pretty hard and I'm not sure how to get over it.
