Last Monday, my 3 y/o, fixed, male cat began to eliminate outside of the box, I thought it was because he couldn't get to his litter box, because he got locked out of the bathroom, but the behavior continued and I took him to the vets last Weds where they discovered a nasty UTI and he ended up getting cathed and spent the nights at the vets. He's on the pill form of bay trim 1x daily for two weeks and now has to be on a special diet.
He keeps revisiting the areas that he peed on and wants to pee on them, he will go in the box, but he sniffs and paws around the hardwood floor where the items were that he peed on, I have scrubbed the areas 10x but he must still be able to smell his urine. Also, he sees scared to go into the bathroom where his box was, because for the first 24 hours after he got home from the vets, I kept him in there, because I wanted to make sure he was peeing and might not catch it if he peed on something in the house, and now I think I have made him afraid of his litter box, I thought I made him afraid of the bathroom, so I moved the box, but he gets scared around it, I scoop it and add fresh litter after each use, and change it completely every other day, but he still acts like he wants to pee on anything soft. Idk if it's too soon to tell if this the UTI or if this now a behavior. This is also a single cat household, so he is the only one using it.
I don't know what to do, I have never had this problem before, before the UTI, he never peed out of the box, his vet told me to wait and see, but I don't want this to turn into a behavior problem and any advice is appreciated
