I got my dog Casper 2 weeks ago, he's a 1.5 year old griffon belge and he's very obedient, sweet, and clumsy.
Now, the issue is that we went to a vet a few days ago to get him checked, and she recommended we brush his teeth daily. He has no mouth-issues, and he's very ok with me putting my fingers in his mouth/feeling his teeth, as long as there is no toothpaste. We bought said toothpaste from the vet, and it's poultry liver flavour, and for some reason, he will happily sniff it, be it directly from the tube or on my finger, and then nope out if I put it near his mouth. I did manage to put a tiny amount on my finger and test-rub it on a tooth, and as soon as he tasted it he got up and walked away from me and out of the room, and off to the living room for "sympathy-snuggles" from the rest of the family. He doesn't seem to mind other liver-flavoured things, he had some liver treats at the vet during his toe-hair-shaving that he very much enjoyed, but this toothpaste seems to be his biggest enemy.
So the q is, is the toothpaste very important for his tooth-health? I could most likely get him to accept a toothbrush with just some water, or try to find a different toothpaste, but since it doesn't seem like the liver flavour is the issue, I don't know how much it'd help?
