I did a Foster-to-Adopt a kitten in December who has Micropathalmia and got a double ennucleation (both eyes removed) before I adopted her. She is an excellent companion for my other two blind boys, which is why I adopted her. She had ongoing URI problems and wasn’t responding well to treatment when I realized the shelter had never tested her. I thought it was going to be FIV, but it turns out she has FELV.
I reached out to the place because they still had her biological brother and sister, and it turns out brother has it too. So I adopted both of them since brother’s future was uncertain and I can provide them with the love and veterinary care they need.
They both are very active, normal red and white cells, and so far the only problems they have are ongoing URI issues. She is on Doxicyclene in liquid form and he gets a Convenia shot every 2 weeks because that’s what works for them. We started her on a FELV drug before him but she started drinking excessively and not eating so we lowered her dose and we’re starting him on it to see how he does (we waited longer for him because he is very skittish and needed to acclimate).
They are both tiny (less than 5 pounds) but have their adult teeth and are almost a year old (the healthy sister is at least 8 pounds). I know prognosis is not good for kittens diagnosed with FELV, and they’re lucky if they live to 3, but does anyone have experience with this? Any recommendations? Advice? I want them to live LONG, healthy, lives and I need to do everything possible so they get that.
