How did you know it was time to put down your pet?

My lab/shepard is 15 years old. He’s been showing signs of hip problems for a couple years, but nothing to really worry about. He fell on our tile Sunday AM and has been acting weird since (he’s slipped multiple times, but I guess this one was different). Walking around the house panting, peeing in the house (which he has started to do if we wait too long to take him out, but now only after a couple hours), standing for over 30 mins at a time, walking from one side of the room to another. We picked up some pain meds from the vet today and we had to force him to lay down and pet/calm him for a while before he finally accepted the down time and went to sleep (and I think the meds kicked in). He has had times before where he won’t stand up, or has had hip problems, but this is different, and has gone on longer without improvement than anything he’s had before. When did you come to the realization it may just be time to let him go and make the final trip to the vet..? This CAN’T a good life for his golden years...
