Mercy kill healthy, old dog?

Hi, I have a tough dilemma. My 14 yo Shiba is in quite good health for his age, but I’m starting to wonder what we can offer him beyond this point.

Starting next week, I’ll be away, and he’ll be left with my mom, who with a full time job often leaves him all alone for 9 hours a day... I’m afraid that after I leave, all he’ll get is a few more months of a depressing lifestyle and missing me, before he’ll get some age related illness forcing us to put him down.

I’m worried that in the future I won’t be able to be there for him, and that his last few days will be miserable, especially since we now have a vet who’s able to come to our house tomorrow after a fun week of plenty of walks for him.

Next to just avoiding any unnecessary suffering for my dog, my mother’s parents have also fallen ill, and I feel like the dog is keeping her from seeing them as much as she might have liked(they live in another country).

It’s just hard to argue what we have to gain from postponing putting him down 1-2 years, where his QoL will be questionable, and he’ll most likely have to suffer through some very unpleasant illness and “neglect”...

Thoughts?
