My 3 and a half year old cat died suddenly-vet doesn't seem to have answers as to what happened?

My 3 and a half year old indoor cat, Louie passed away this morning. It happened very suddenly within the course of about 3 days. He gradually became more lethargic, weaker but he was still eating. Then the day before he passed, he stopped eating altogether, became very thirsty, dropped down to 8 lbs (He was usually around 10). His breathing was very rapid and he could only walk a few feet before laying back down. He was also making high pitched whining noises, especially the day/night before he passed. I took him to the vet the day before he passed and she ran a blood test and xrays and gave him fluids. He had no fever, was FIV/FELV negative, and his liver and kidneys were fine. His xrays also did not show any sign of a foreign body. The only thing she did mention was that he had an abnormally high white blood cell count, dark urine with a lot of protein in it which could have meant he had an infection but from what, she doesn't know. She literally told me it's a, "mystery case." I just keep blaming myself and not understanding what happened. Can anyone shed any light on what could have possibly happened? My vet sort of implied I may have left something toxic out that he got into but I can't think of what because I was always so careful never to leave anything out he could've ingested. My fear now is that whatever he had could be contagious since I have two other ones at home. I'm just puzzled and heartbroken.
